  • The 10 Best Game Shows To Watch Like 'MrBeast's Beast Games'

The 10 Best Game Shows To Watch Like 'MrBeast's Beast Games'

    Rachel Ulatowski

    Rachel Ulatowski

    JustWatch Editor

James Stephen Donaldson, better known by his internet alias MrBeast, has made a career on YouTube performing large-scale stunts and challenges. Recently, he launched his biggest initiative yet with Amazon’s Beast Games (2024).

With over 1,000 contestants and a $5 million cash prize, Beast Games is the largest game show with the biggest cash prize in history. Viewers looking for more large-scale game shows with high stakes and unique physical and mental challenges can use our guide to find 10 more great shows like Beast Games on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and more!

    Cheat (2023)

Cheat is a Netflix game show with a unique twist on the trivia format. In each episode, four contestants answer trivia questions and are encouraged to “cheat” if they don’t know the question by discreetly pressing a button. The contestant who is best at detecting when their fellow competitors cheat can win $50,000.

Like Beast Games, Cheat is an unconventional and refreshing game show. It has something different to offer than the typical, straightforward trivia show, which elevates the stakes and keeps viewers on their toes as they try to determine who the best cheat hunter is. Cheat is an excellent show for fans seeking something as unique as Beast Games but more focused on mental rather than physical challenges.

Legends of the Hidden Temple (1993-1995)

Legends of the Hidden Temple is a Nickelodeon game show in which six teams of two children navigate challenges on a Mayan-inspired set. The teams complete three rounds of physical challenges and trivia questions to determine which team is worthy of entering the temple.

This fun, family-friendly alternative to Beast Games offers unique challenges, obstacles, courses, and prizes. If you’re a ‘90s kid, Legends of the Hidden Temple was peak Nickelodeon and likely resulted in treasured memories of yelling at the TV screen and rooting for your favorite team. Today, the show remains a nostalgic treat for adults and children alike. It’s essentially Beast Games for kids, with wildly creative challenge concepts and designs.

    Physical: 100 (2023-Present)

Viewers who enjoy the high number of competitors and elimination format in Beast Games will be interested in Physical: 100. The South Korean reality TV series starts each season with 100 contestants, who compete in various grueling and creative physical challenges to avoid elimination and win $240,000.

Large in scale and intensity, Physical: 100 parallels Beast Games in more ways than one. The intensity and suspense of the series is off the charts with mass eliminations and brutal challenges, such as hanging onto a bar suspended over water for as long as possible. Meanwhile, the show always boasts a colorful, athletic array of contestants who keep things lively with their prominent personalities. It’s the kind of game show that’s so good you’re almost too scared to watch because of the high stakes and painful likelihood of contestants you’ve grown to love going home.

    Siren: Survive the Island (2023)

Siren: Survive the Island’s contestants consist of 24 female police officers, firefighters, bodyguards, soldiers, athletes, and stuntwomen. The women are divided into six teams of four and placed on a remote island, competing in challenges until one team remains standing.

Not only are the intensity, stakes, and drama on par with Beast Games, but the show also puts a spotlight on the bravest and toughest female professionals. It offers a different type of drama than Beast Games, though. These women are in it to win and can be far more brutal and serious than the typical game show competitor. You won’t have the sometimes tiresome and petty infighting among competitors, but you will see some astounding strategic and intellectual skills. Siren: Survive the Island cuts the fluff and keeps the pace fast and intense, making it impossible for viewers to look away.

    Squid Game: The Challenge (2023-Present)

Squid Game: The Challenge is the closest a game show has come to matching Beast Games' scale. Inspired by the dystopian thriller series Squid Game (2021), the show features 456 contestants competing for a whopping cash prize of $4.56 million.

In addition to boasting large-scale, high-stakes, juicy drama, and betrayal, Squid Game: The Challenge is unique in that it challenges its contestants with tasks inspired by children’s games. You’ll never be bored watching Squid Game: The Challenge’s rendition of all the deadliest, most suspenseful Squid Game challenges. Like Beast Games, the large scale also adds to the high entertainment as contestants form alliances and commit shocking betrayals. Besides Beast Games, the stakes don’t get much higher than Squid Game: The Challenge.

    Survivor (2000-Present)

Survivor is one of the most popular reality competition shows of all time. Each season, 16 or more contestants are placed on a remote island where they must survive and provide their own food, shelter, and fire. The winner is dubbed “Sole Survivor” and gets $1 million.

Like Beast Games, Survivor is often filled with surprising twists, betrayals, alliances, and drastic actions motivated by the enormous prize. However, it’s a lot more brutal than the typical game show as it deposits contestants on an isolated island rather than a structured game show arena, and essentially leaves them to fend for themselves. It raises the stakes and suspense as you get the feeling that these people really are fighting for survival. The idea to leave elimination in the contestants' hands also adds to the drama and shock factor.

    The Devil’s Plan (2023-Present)

The Devil’s Plan is the perfect choice for anyone looking for a South Korean game show, but who want something the complete opposite of Physical 100. Instead of grueling physical challenges, The Devil’s Plan embraces strategy and mental skill. It features 12 contestants participating in a seven-day competition where they compete in complex cognitive and strategic challenges and can land in “jail” for performing poorly.

Very few game shows are as unique or have as intricate set designs as The Devil’s Plan and Beast Games. The Devil’s Plan will especially appeal to viewers who value creativity over simplicity. It’s a challenge both for viewers and contestants to wade through the tangled web of rules and stipulations within the games. Interestingly, the game pits influencers and TV personalities against professionals in the STEM field, demonstrating that intelligence and knowledge don’t always equate to strategic skill. Ultimately, The Devil’s Plan gets you thinking and surpasses most game shows in complexity and depth.

    The Mole (2001-2008)

Viewers intrigued by the betrayals and drama of Beast Games will love The Mole. Each season follows seven or more contestants who work together through physical and mental challenges and have to figure out which of them is secretly a “mole” selected by producers to sabotage the money-raising efforts.

Like Beast Games, The Mole’s unique format effectively elevates the stakes and drama. Alliances are more complex to form once the seed of suspicion is planted. No one trusts anyone, and the trickster capitalizes on manipulation to keep contestants guessing. The element of sabotage makes The Mole perhaps even more addictive than Beast Games.

    The Zone: Survival Mission (2022-2024)

One of the most intriguing aspects of Beast Games is how it seemingly transports contestants and viewers into another realm with the $14 million city MrBeast developed for it. The Zone: Survival Mission also has the transportation effect through a disaster-simulated virtual space, which sees five South Korean celebrities attempt to survive eight disaster simulations, such as a zombie apocalypse.

The Zone: Survival Mission is unique, takes advantage of virtual simulations, and allows viewers to see contestants in a variety of environments and situations. It’s unlike other game shows in that it doesn’t pit contestants against each other, but instead explores their teamwork and survival skills in unusual environments. The result is a surprisingly funny game show, given the banter between contestants and the wild ideas and comments that surface under stress. If you love visually dazzling game shows that emphasize humor, The Zone: Survival Mission is the perfect show.

    Wipeout (2008-2025)

Like Beast Games, Wipeout features a large number of contestants and extreme challenges. Every season, 24 contestants attempt to successfully complete four rounds of increasingly difficult and complex obstacle courses, trying not to “wipeout,” as each course includes the possibility of falls and collisions.

Wipeout is wildly entertaining and funny with its outrageous courses and desire to capture the worst wipeouts. It’s a true classic with enough popularity and success to help pave the way for ambitious and wild game shows like Beast Games, pushing its successors to be bigger and more outrageous. The show is pure fun and entertainment, filled with physical comedy, exciting challenges, and top-notch hosting. Similar to Beast Games, Wipeout is the kind of game show you turn on when looking for a high-quality game show binge.

If you want to make sure you’ve seen all of this year's most popular TV shows, this streaming guide is for you! We've dug deep into JustWatch's streaming data over the last twelve months so we can unveil the most popular TV shows on streaming services throughout 2024 and show you where to stream them online.

What was the most popular TV show to stream in 2024?

According to JustWatch’s popularity score throughout the last twelve months, Shōgun was this year’s most popular TV show on streaming services in the United States. The global hit, which was produced by Hulu and aired exclusively on the platform, beat the likes of Amazon’s hit video-game adaptation Fallout (#2) and Hulu’s other extremely successful show, The Bear (#3).

Shōgun is an adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a popular mini-series in 1980. The historical drama follows John Blackthorne, an English sailor, as he lands on Japanese shores and becomes embroiled in the county’s political turmoil. The TV show is a historical fiction but takes inspiration from real-world events, most notably the English navigator William Adams and his journey to becoming a samurai under Tokugawa Ieyasu.

In addition to taking the #1 spot as this year’s most popular TV show, Shōgun is also the only non-English language TV show to break into the top ten. The show includes scenes in Japanese, English and Portuguese and even uses miscommunication and translation as an important storytelling tool. Shōgun and Fallout are also the only two shows to make the top ten list with their first season.

Adrien Brody starred in lots of indie films before becoming a breakout star in 2002 with The Pianist. In the film, Brody portrays composer and holocaust survivor Wladysaw Szpilman. His performance was universally praised and in 2003 he took home the Best Actor award at the Oscars. Since then, Brody has starred in comedies, action hits, and more biographical dramas. Check out our guide below to discover the actor’s best movies and TV series and where to stream them.

This guide will show you all of Adrien Brody’s best movies and TV series, and where they’re streaming online right now.

Adrian Brody’s Best Wes Anderson Films

Brody has become a frequent collaborator with the quirky and hipster director Wes Anderson. The filmmaker is known for his use of pastel colors, unique camera angles, heightened shapes, and storylines that mix comedy, adventure, and melancholy. Brody has starred in many of Anderson’s best films including Asteroid City, The French Dispatch, The Darjeeling Limited, and the Oscar-winning The Grand Budapest Hotel.

    Adrien Brody’s Best Action Movies

Brody has also starred in some high-profile action and adventure films too. Most notably he starred in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, which earned over $556 million at the box office and retold the classic story of how the world came to discover the giant gorilla, Kong. He also starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s somewhat controversial movie The Village. I won’t give away any spoilers, but let’s just say the film takes a very unexpected turn…which infuriated some fans. But after the initial shock wears out, the movie is incredibly interesting.

    Adrien Brody’s Best TV Series

Brody hasn’t just worked in films either. In 2021 he starred alongside Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire in the MGM+ series Chapelwaite. The show was inspired by Stephen King’s novel Jeruselam’s Lot and takes place in the 1800s. Brody plays a father who returns to Maine with his children…only to uncover dark secrets.

He also starred in HBO’s hit LA Lakers drama Winning Time, which chronicles the team's rise to fame during the 80s. The show portrayed various real-life figures like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. On top of his starring roles in various series, Brody also has a prominent role in season 4 of Peaky Blinders, where he played New York mobster Luca Changretta.

As the year comes to an end, it’s time to unveil the most popular movies on streaming services throughout 2024. Here you can find the complete list of the year’s ten most popular movies and find where you can still watch them all right now online.

What was the most popular movie to stream in 2024?

According to JustWatch’s popularity score throughout the last twelve months, Alex Garland’s dystopian thriller Civil War was this year’s most popular title on streaming services in the United States. The movie was released in theaters on April 12, grossing $68 million domestically, and was released on streaming services shortly after. The A24-produced movie starring Kirsten Dunst beat the likes of Oppenheimer (#2), Poor Things (#3) and Dune: Part Two (#4) to the top spot.

This year’s most popular movies on streaming services shows that streamers in the United States are interested in watching acclaimed non-English language movies; Three of the year’s most popular streaming titles were not predominantly in English, including Godzilla Minus One (Japanese), Anatomy of a Fall (German/English/French) and The Zone of Interest (German). Interestingly, these were also the non-English language titles nominated in popular categories at the Academy Awards in 2024. There is also a strong correlation between streamers’ preferences and the nominations for Best Picture at the Oscars; Six of the top ten most popular streaming titles this year were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars back in March 2024.

There is also a noticeable trend of live-action movies outperforming animation, in contrast to the year’s domestic box office which featured four animated movies in 2024 (Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Moana 2, Kung Fu Panda 4).

The critically acclaimed anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba recently wrapped up its run on the small screen. After five seasons, the show concluded, with its final arc, Infinity Castle, set to premiere as a film trilogy.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba follows Tanjiro Kamado, a young boy who becomes a demon slayer and sets out to save his sister Nezuko after a demon possesses her. With its gorgeous animation, heartfelt storyline, historical premise, and lovable characters, the show has quickly become one of the most popular anime series.

Viewers looking for more shows like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba while awaiting the film trilogy can use our guide to find 10 similar great anime series available to stream on platforms like Crunchyroll and more.

    Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan is a critically acclaimed anime series set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity lives in fear of man-eating creatures known as Titans. After a Titan kills Eren Yeager’s mother, he joins the Survey Corps in his quest to kill every Titan. However, his journey leads to him discovering startling truths about himself and humanity. Attack on Titan has a similar premise to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba of a boy set on vengeance against inhuman creatures but offers a more mature and complex story filled with plot twists and intriguing social and political commentary.

    Bleach

Bleach follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a young man who reluctantly accepts the role of Soul Reaper after another Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, sacrifices herself to save him. Ichigo becomes immersed in the spirit world as he fights malevolent spirits and helps the departed transition to the afterlife. Demon Slayer’s author, Koyouharu Gotoge, has cited Bleach as one of the inspirations for his work. Both series capitalize on supernatural elements, offer a unique blend of comedy and drama, and boast colorful and gorgeous animation.

    Death Note

Death Note tells the story of Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a notebook from a shinigami that has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. The series explores themes of power, the nature of good and evil, and justice as Light navigates his newfound abilities. It is a good alternative to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba for viewers looking for a supernatural series that leans more toward psychological thriller than action/adventure.

    Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who lost their physical bodies after a failed alchemy experiment to bring back their late mother. Together, they vow to find the Philosopher’s Stone to restore their bodies. Like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an action-packed story with powerful themes of hope, family bonds, determination, and mortality.

    Hell’s Paradise

Hell’s Paradise centers on Gabimaru the Hollow, a man with superhuman abilities who sets out to find the elixir of life in a dangerous and legendary realm. If he finds the elixir, he will be pardoned for his crimes and able to return to his beloved wife. It’s a top-notch shōnen anime series with a slightly darker tone that explores human resilience and determination when motivated by saving a loved one.

    Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen boasts a similar setting to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba in that they both feature secret organizations. Instead of joining the Demon Slayer corps, though, the show follows Yuji Itadori as he joins the Jujutsu Sorcerers in hopes of finding a way to get rid of his curse. The show also parallels Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba with its impeccable blend of action and comedic relief, stunning animation, and strong character arcs.

    My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without powers in a world of superpowered individuals. Despite his unique birth, he works tirelessly to gain powers and attend an academy for superheroes. My Hero Academia shares excellent action sequences, animation, and worldbuilding with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba but offers a slower pace and more upbeat tone.

    Orient

Orient follows teenage boy Musashi, whose society has been overrun by demons who trick people into thinking the samurai are the enemy. However, Musashi recognizes the truth and sets out to fight the demons. Like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which takes place during the Taishō era, Orient also boasts a historical setting, putting a unique supernatural and mystical spin on the Sengoku period.

    Soul Eater

Soul Eater centers on Maka Albarn, a Death Weapon Meister Academy student who becomes obsessed with turning her human weapon, Soul Eater, into a death scythe. Like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, it is a shōnen anime that centers on training and battle sequences. However, it sets itself apart with its unique gothic tone, complex character development, and exploration of death.

    Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul tells the story of Ken Kaneki, a college student transformed into a half-ghoul after a ghoul attacks him. He struggles to navigate his new identity as the bridge between humans and ghouls as the species’ relations grow more tense and violent. It leans more into the dark fantasy genre than Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and is a bit more mature in its political commentary, but both shows ultimately explore what it means to be human and what would happen if humans lived alongside monsters.

This guide will show you the best movies and series (including anime) that fans of Attack on Titan will love. It will also let you know where they’re all streaming online right now.

Attack on Titan is one of the most praised mangas and animes ever. The series centers around the race of Eldians, who live in a society protected behind three giant walls. But massive humanoid monsters called Titans begin to attack – and as the series continues, the Titans’ origin adds a level of depth and emotion to this action-packed dystopian story. If you love Attack on Titan, use our guide below to discover more great movies and series you’ll love.

    Wayward Pines

A mysterious society in the future built on lies that hides behind a giant wall to keep monsters away…sound familiar? Any fan of Attack on Titan will immediately recognize that while it’s never been officially talked about, Wayward Pines clearly has taken massive inspiration from the anime. The show’s vibe can be described as Attack on Titan + Twin Peaks + Stranger Things = Wayward Pines.

    Berserk

Berserk follows a warrior in a fictional medieval world and the enemies he comes across. Just like Attack on Titan, the manga and anime can be incredibly bleak and unrelenting, offering social commentary and underlying messages that force viewers to think.

    Pacific Rim

The Titans in Attack on Titan share tons of similarities with Kaijus in monster movies. They’re giant, destructive, unpredictable, and incredibly strong. So fans of the manga and anime should absolutely check out some great kaiju films for a similar feel. In Pacific Rim, humanity decides to fight back in giant robots called Jaegers, leading to explosive battles.

    86 - EIGHTY SIX

In 86, two societies use giant robots to wage warfare against each other. One side believes that the robots are all remotely controlled or autonomous…but in reality, the opponents are actually piloting their robots with real people known as 86 – a marginalized minority group that’s been deemed inhuman – using them like kamikaze bombers, knowing they’ll die. If you loved the tough questions and situations posed in Attack on Titan, you’ll love 86.

    Stardust

Looking for something wildly different, but somehow similar? In Stardust, two worlds are separated by a wall: The mortal world, and a realm full of magic, monsters, and fairytales. The way the wall separates the worlds and the looming danger on the magical side has an oddly similar feel to Attack on Titan, despite the two being very different. If you want something way out of left field that still somehow feels similar to Attack on Titan, this is it.

    Invasion of the Body Snatchers

I won’t be giving away any spoilers, but if you know Attack on Titan, you know there’s a reason why the Titans have such an unrelenting appetite for people (and if you don’t know, then you better watch the show because it’s amazing). For something similar, check out Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or its more modern adaptation, The Faculty, which is about an alien race who needs to use human bodies to survive and replicate.

    Children of Men

If you watch Attack on Titan long enough, you discover it isn’t really a series about monsters, it’s actually about humanity attacking itself…at the detriment of humanity. That raises so many questions and feels so dystopian, giving Attack on Titan a huge dose of emotional weight. For something similar, check out Children of Men. In the movie, humans become infertile and the realization that humanity is dying off drives people to madness, causing society to attack itself.

Since its premiere in 2016, Moana has been one of Disney’s fastest-growing franchises. In addition to receiving a sequel in 2024, Moana will be one of Disney’s newest computer-animated films to score a live-action adaptation, set to premiere in 2026.

Viewers interested in the sequel and live-action adaptation can use our guide to find out how to watch the Moana movies in order and where they’re available online, including platforms like Disney+.

    Moana (2016)

Moana tells the story of Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho), a young woman from Montunui, who teams up with the shapeshifting demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to fulfill her destiny of restoring the heart of Te Fiti. The film is Disney animation at its finest, filled with stunning visuals, a representative story that celebrates Polynesian culture, and a breathtaking soundtrack featuring songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda. It finds the perfect balance between humor, heart, fantasy, and depth, offering a timeless story for audiences of all ages.

Moana is the perfect movie for fans of Disney’s diverse and musical computer-animated films. Its music is on par with the brilliant score from Encanto (2021), while Moana is an inspiring, fierce heroine reminiscent of Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) and Brave’s (2012) bold, female protagonists. If you’re looking for family-friendly animation with fun music, strong themes, diversity, and great role models, Moana is the perfect movie.

    Gone Fishing (2017)

Gone Fishing is a short film that follows Maui and Moana as they learn how their treatment of the ocean impacts their fishing success. It’s a fun brief for Moana fans seeking a little more of the franchise. The short is more geared toward children and offers a nice lesson about respecting nature; older viewers will also appreciate Johnson and Cravalho’s brief reprisals of their iconic roles.

Gone Fishing is very similar to other Disney franchise shorts, such as Jack-Jack Attack (2005) and Frozen Fever (2015), in that it’s short, sweet, and offers fans a brief taste of the franchise, paired with a lighthearted life lesson.

    Moana 2 (2024)

Moana 2 sees Moana set off on her second adventure with Maui and a few new crewmembers as she attempts to raise the sunken island of Motufetu. The sequel is perfect for fans of the original movie. It captures the heart and spirit of the first film, elevating its strong female protagonist, gorgeous oceanic visuals, and expanding the cast to incorporate more humor and friendship.

While Moana 2 doesn’t eclipse the original, that’s to be expected, considering how groundbreaking and iconic Moana was, and Miranda’s absence from the score in the sequel. On the whole, though, it’s a substantial addition to the franchise. It’s similar to works like Frozen II (2019) and Incredibles 2 (2018), which couldn’t recreate the magical experience of the original due to familiarity, but still shine with heartfelt stories, catchy tunes, and adventure. If you’re looking for more Moana, you can’t go wrong with Moana 2.

    Moana (2026)

In 2023, Disney and Johnson surprised fans by announcing a live-action remake of Moana (2026). While Disney is known for remaking its classic animated tales, remaking an animated movie less than a decade old is rare. The remake is exciting nonetheless, with Johnson set to reprise his role of Maui and Cravalho serving as an executive producer.

Meanwhile, award-winning Hamilton director Thomas Kail will direct. Moana has already found its titular hero in Hollywood newcomer Catherine Laga'aia, and the film arrives in theaters in the summer of 2026.

    Keith Langston

This guide will show you the best Amy Adams movies and where you can find them all streaming online right now.

Amy Adams is one of the most talented actresses of our generation. So far, she’s earned 6 Oscar nominations, 2 Emmy nominations, and 10 Golden Globe nominations, winning two of them. From comedies to dramas, thrillers, and even sci-fi epics, Adams has proven she can land a solid performance in a variety of genres. Check out our guide below to find out Amy Adams’ best movies (and a series) and where you can watch them online right now.

    Nightbitch

Amy Adams is already receiving praise for her film Nightbitch, which sees her turning into a dog at night. The movie is a sly commentary on womanhood and the emotions many women have to hide to appease the societal norm. Nightbitch won numerous awards at film festivals around the world before its theatrical premiere.

    Arrival

One of Adams’ most iconic roles is in Arrival, where an alien race arrives on Earth – but their intention is peace and understanding, not global warfare. However, the humans are too consumed by fear to give the aliens a chance, so it’s up to Adams to communicate with the extraterrestrials and find a way to ensure peace.

    Enchanted

One of Adams’ most notable hits is the Disney film Enchanted. The comedy pokes fun at classic Disney movies like Cinderella and Snow White and turns the tropes on their head by placing a fairytale princess in modern-day Manhattan.

    Drop Dead Gorgeous

In the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous, a beauty pageant is taking place in a small Minnesota town…but one of the contestants has murderous intentions. The film is a hilarious spoof of pageant culture, femininity, the Midwest, and how far desperate people will go to feel superior.

    Doubt

Based on the 2004 play of the same name, the Oscar-nominated film Doubt tackles a heavy topic and leaves viewers with big questions. A priest is accused of molesting a young boy at a Catholic school, but there’s little evidence to support it. The movie forces audiences to consider whether it’s a true case of abuse, or if they’re allegations against a gay man due to prejudice.

    Vice

Amy Adams earned both an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for her role in Vice, which tells the story of former vice president Dick Cheney. The film depicts his life in politics and business and shows how he had a massive role in favoring corporations over citizens. It also dives into his numerous scandals that cost lives and livelihoods.

    Julie & Julia

In Julie & Julia, Amy Adams plays real-life blogger Julie Powell, who decided to cook every recipe in Julia Child’s iconic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The film depicts Powell’s journey side-by-side with Julia Child’s life story and her time in France.

    Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects is a miniseries, not a movie, but it was widely acclaimed and earned Adams an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination, so all fans should check it out. In the miniseries, an alcoholic journalist (Adams) returns to her rural hometown to investigate the murder of two young girls. But returning home brings out old wounds and challenges her sanity.

This guide will let you know all the great Christmas comedy movies that are streaming online right now.

Yes, the holidays are the happiest and most joyful time of the year…but it’s also a time for crazy crowds, bickering families, and Scrooges all around. That’s probably why so many of us need a good Christmas comedy to get us through the holiday season. Luckily, thanks to streaming services like Max, Netflix, and Disney+, among many others, there are lots of great Christmas comedies streaming right now. Check out our guide below to discover some of the best.

    Home Alone

Home Alone is one of the most iconic Christmas movies ever and centers around a somewhat awful family who accidentally forgets their son as they leave for Paris. Now, home alone, Kevin must fight off a pair of burglars using some hilariously brutal homemade traps.

    Christmas with the Kranks

Initially bashed as a horrible and corny holiday movie, Christmas with the Kranks has become a classic simply for how awful it is. In the movie, two parents decide to skip Christmas when they discover their daughter won’t be coming home. What ensues is a full-on war between them and their Christmas-loving neighbors.

    The Bitch Who Stole Christmas

Queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race came together to create an irreverent spoof of cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies. In the film, a big city journalist visits a small town for a juicy holiday story…only to uncover a drama-filled nefarious plot. The Bitch Who Stole Christmas stars queens like RuPaul, Peppermint, Gotmik, and Ginger Minj.

    A Christmas Story

“You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” has become an iconic line that’s shouted yearly at Christmastime thanks to A Christmas Story. Taking place in 1940, the movie is an ode to how Midwestern families celebrated Christmas back in the day. The craziest part is how relatable the movie remains to this day.

    Christmas Vacation

Nothing can ever go right for the Griswold family…but let’s be honest here, that’s the whole reason we love them so much. In Christmas Vacation, the family hopes to celebrate the best holiday ever, but instead they’re met with homeless relatives, exploding sewers, electrocuted cats, and one hell of a Scroogey boss. Ah, Christmas!

    Mixed Nuts

This mostly unknown cult classic holiday movie centers around the employees of a suicide hotline on Christmas. Also, there’s a serial killer on the loose known as the Seaside Strangler. But somehow, despite all the terror and death around them, this group of misfits learns the true meaning of the season. Plus, Mixed Nuts stars comedy legends Steve Martin and Madeline Kahn.

    Jingle All the Way

Jingle All the Way poked fun at the way consumerism has taken over the world and shows a father, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who feels that getting his son the perfect present is more important than actually spending time with him. Even crazier, just weeks after the movie’s release, the Tickle Me Elmo craze hit America, and scenes from Jingle All the Way ended up playing out in real life.

    A Bad Moms Christmas

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn all reprised their Bad Moms roles for this holiday sequel. Even better, with it being the holidays, the moms are forced to spend time with their own moms. Other notable names in the cast include Wanda Sykes, Christine Baranski, and Christina Applegate.

    Rachel Ulatowski

Gladiator II, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s influential Gladiator, has finally arrived on the big screen. Set 16 years after the time of Maximus Deridius (Russell Crowe), the film follows a new tragic hero, Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), who is enslaved by the Roman Army. When he catches the eye of former slave Macrinus (Denzel Washington), he realizes the gladiatorial games may be the key to getting revenge.

Gladiator II is a worthy successor, with stunning visuals, powerful performances, and bloody vengeance, even if it doesn’t eclipse the original film. Viewers interested in more movies with the scale, historical elements, and depth of Gladiator II can use our guide to find similar movies available to stream online on platforms like Starz, Paramount+, and more.

Best historical epics like Gladiator II

    Ben-Hur (1959)

Ben-Hur (1959) is a historical epic that follows Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), a Jew whose life is torn apart by his Roman childhood friend, Messala (Stephen Boyd). As Judah goes from slavery to becoming a champion charioteer, he continues seeking vengeance. At the time of its release, Ben-Hur was the most expensive film ever made, and it shows through its awe-inspiring scale, iconic chariot scenes, and dazzling sets. Like Gladiator II, it transports viewers to the past and offers a unique blend of vengeance, romance, and heroism.

    Gladiator

You can’t get closer to Gladiator II than Gladiator. The original movie follows Maximus, a Roman general meant to be heir to the emperor. When the emperor’s son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), kills Maximus’ family and enslaves him, Maximus begins advancing through the gladiatorial games in his quest for vengeance. Gladiator gained high critical acclaim and revived the historical epic genre in Hollywood. It’s a must-see for Ridley Scott and historical epic fans.

    Spartacus

Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus premiered in 1960 and tells the story of Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), an enslaved man sold to a businessman for the gladiatorial games. However, he soon uses his training against his captors, leading a slave rebellion. Similar to Gladiator II, Spartacus is a stunning spectacle with powerful performances and beautiful cinematography that delves into Ancient Rome in a blend of entertainment and emotion.

The Fall of the Roman Empire

The Fall of the Roman Empire was, essentially, the Gladiator of the 1960s. The film follows Livius (Stephen Boyd), a soldier meant to inherit the throne from Marcus Aurelius (Alec Guinness) until the corrupt Commodus (Christopher Plummer) takes over. As corruption continues seeping into the empire, Livius challenges Commodus’ reign. The Fall of the Roman Empire shares many plot and thematic similarities to Gladiator and Gladiator II and includes one of the most expansive film sets ever constructed.

    Troy

Troy is a historical epic loosely based on Homer’s Iliad. The film explores the Trojan War, which breaks out when Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) has an affair with Sparta King Menelaus’ (Brendan Gleeson) wife. Menelaus, seeking vengeance, soon recruits King Agamemnon (Brian Cox) and the warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) to take Troy. While Troy has received criticism for being unfaithful to its source material, it is still a bold, entertaining spectacle with top-notch action sequences and complex heroes.

Best Revenge movies like Gladiator II

    The Count of Monte-Cristo (2024)

Based on Alexander Dumas’ novel of the same name, The Count of Monte-Cristo tells the story of Edmond Dantès (Pierre Niney), who spends years in prison after three jealous men conspire to put him away. Upon escaping, Dantès gains status and riches while plotting his revenge. Both Gladiator II and The Count of Monte-Cristo are thrilling revenge sagas with unique historical settings, brisk paces, and stunning set designs and cinematography.

    The Last Duel

The Last Duel shares both a revenge plot and director with Gladiator II. Scott’s historical drama follows squires Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques le Gris (Adam Driver), who become involved in a bitter feud after Jacques assaults Jean’s wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer). Like Gladiator II, The Last Duel is a big-budget feud tale but also thoughtfully examines serious themes of misogyny and justice.

    The Nightingale

The Nightingale is a historical thriller that centers on Clare Carroll (Aisling Franciosi), an Irish convict who enlists the help of Aboriginal tracker Billy (Baykali Ganambarr) to hunt down and exact vengeance on the British soldier who destroyed her family. The Nightingale isn’t always easy to watch, but, like Gladiator II, it utilizes a brutal storyline to examine themes of discrimination and justice.

    The Northman

The Northman follows Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), whose life is upended as a boy when his uncle kills his father and abducts his mother. As a man, Amleth sets out to fulfill his vow to save his mother, kill his uncle, and avenge his father. Through Amleth, The Northman gives viewers a hero as brutal and inspiring as Lucius in a bold tale of romance and revenge.

Check out our guide below to discover some of the best historical action movies that are streaming right now.

    Harriet

Cynthia Erivo earned herself an Oscar nomination for portraying Harriet Tubman in the biopic Harriet. The film follows Tubman’s harrowing and adventurous life as she escapes to freedom in the North, fights for the Union army, and begins her work with John Brown to free slaves.

    Dunkirk

Earning eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director for Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk told the true story of the Dunkirk evacuation during World War II, when German forces surrounded French troops. The allied forces worked together to rescue the troops, ultimately saving over 300,000 people.

    The Ghost and the Darkness

The Field Museum in Chicago has the taxidermied bodies of two infamous lions known as the Tsavo Man-Eaters. During the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railroad, the two lions became maneaters. The lions began eating the construction workers and as the months went on, the lions got bolder and bolder, eventually attacking almost every single night. The Ghost and the Darkness tells the terrifying true story of surviving the lion attacks.

    Everest

Everest chronicles the catastrophic events of the 1996 Mount Everest Disaster. A group of ill-prepared climbers were stranded during a blizzard, creating a tragic disaster that caused two hiking expeditions to fight for their lives, ultimately leaving eight people dead. The film had an all-star cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, and Keira Knightley.

    The Impossible

The Impossible centers around the true story of Maria Belon and her family who were vacationing in Thailand during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The tsunami brought numerous waves crashing into their resort, separating Maria and her family. The Impossible tells the harrowing story of how Maria lived through one of the worst natural disasters in human history.

    Zero Dark Thirty

Scoring five Oscar nominations, Zero Dark Thirty centers on the search for Osama bin Laden after the September 11th attacks, and his eventual death by SEAL Team Six. The movie offered closure for many Americans after the 9/11 attacks and depicts a crucial moment of Obama’s presidency.

    Pompeii

In 79 CE, the Mount Vesuvius volcano in southern Italy erupted, covering the city of Pompeii in toxic gasses, extreme temperatures, and mounds of ash, killing thousands who seemingly had little time to escape or prepare. The movie shows the final days of ancient Pompeii before being completely destroyed.

    Pearl Harbor

In 2001, Michael Bay created a big-budget epic film depicting the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii starring Ben Affleck, Josh Harnett, and Kate Beckinsale. It’s a bit of a Dawson’s Creek take on the infamous event, but that also helps make the movie more appealing to a wider audience who otherwise might not watch a historical war film.

    Troy

Glossy, sexy, and hypersaturated, 2004’s Troy told the story of the legendary Trojan War. Many scholars debate whether the war actually happened or if it was just a collection of stories that Homer compiled together, but the fact is that its legacy has certainly become a real part of history.

An adaptation of Sally Rooney’s bestselling book of the same name, Normal People follows Connell Waldron (Mescal) and Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a couple who meet in high school and, despite being quite toxic together, can’t seem to avoid each other as they enter and navigate adulthood. The series earned high critical acclaim for Mescal and Edgar-Jones’ vulnerable, emotional performances and its ambitious psychological romance tale.

Normal People is easily Mescal’s best TV role. His best movie role so far is the touching coming-of-age film Aftersun. The film follows Sophie (Frankie Corio) and her father, Callum (Mescal), on their last vacation together when Sophie is 11 years old. As an adult, Sophie reflects on the memories of that vacation to understand her father and their relationship in the present. The movie, a semi-autobiographical story from director Charlotte Wells’, is beautiful and searing as it poignantly explores father-daughter relationships and the nature of memories. For his powerful role as a young father navigating depression, Mescal was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars.

Mescal also garnered recognition for his role in the romance film All of Us Strangers, in which he portrays Harry, the love interest of screenwriter Adam (Andrew Scott). Adam must decide whether to be present with Harry or let his grief transport him to the past. Both Mescal and Scott offer potent performances in this mesmerizing and raw exploration of grief and love.

Another one of Mescal’s memorable leading roles is in the hidden gem God’s Creatures. The psychological drama tells the startling tale of Aileen O’Hara (Emily Watson), a woman who lies to protect her son, Brian (Mescal). However, the lie soon threatens to tear up her town, family, and life. Viewers see a different side of Mescal as a cold and remorseless man in a moving tale about parental love and enablement. Another worthwhile watch is the twisty, critically acclaimed psychological drama The Lost Daughter, in which Mescal boasts a small role alongside Dakota Johnson and Olivia Colman.

From Alien to Gladiator, These Are Ridley Scott’s Best Movies

This guide will show you Ridley Scott’s best movies like Alien and Blade Runner, and let you know where you can stream them online right now.

Ridley Scott is (usually) an acclaimed director who has made some of the biggest films in Hollywood history. Granted, he also sometimes has some big misses, like with G.I. Jane and 1492. But personally, I think any ambitious filmmaker should have a few duds or misunderstood films to show they’ve taken risks. Plus, his filmography has way more hits than misses, proving that Scott truly is a gifted director. Use our guide below to find out all of Ridley Scott’s best movies and where to watch them.

    Alien

Scott will always be best known for his 1979 sci-fi thriller Alien. The movie launched Sigourney Weaver into superstardom and sees the crew of the spaceship Nostromo fight off a xenomorphic alien that has been gestating inside one of the crew. For great action, scares, and sci-fi, it’s a must-watch.

    Blade Runner

Harrison Ford starred in Scott’s next big hit about a futuristic world where humans live alongside bioengineered humanoids called “replicants”. The film examines what it means to be human and alive. Although it had a so-so release back in the ‘80s, it has since become a classic with a great legacy (and tons of alternate versions).

    Thelma & Louise

Playing with the ideas of gender and feminism, Thelma & Louise sees two friends on a road trip. But after a stranger tries to rape one of them, the girls fight back and ultimately find themselves running from the law. The movie ended up getting nominated for 6 Oscars, including Best Director for Scott.

    Gladiator

Love, loss, corruption, and conspiracy are all at the center of Gladiator’s plot. In the film, Russell Crowe plays a general who is unfairly sentenced to death. But after he escapes the plot, he finds himself sold into slavery as a gladiator and works his way up the ranks until he can one day face the Emperor of Rome himself. Scott also received a Best Director nom for the film, and it won the prestigious Best Picture award in 2001.

    Hannibal

Scott directed the Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal in 2001. In the movie, Julianne Moore took over the role of Clarice from Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins reprised his iconic role of Hannibal Lecter. In Hannibal, the cat-and-mouse chase between the two continues, leading to more sinister, macabre madness.

    Black Hawk Down

Set during the Somalia famine, Black Hawk Down tells the true story of the Battle of Mogadishu. During the conflict, a Black Hawk helicopter was shot down and the survivors had to escape on foot. The film earned Scott another Best Director nomination and became a box-office hit.

    The Martian

Inspired by the novel of the same name, The Martian sees a NASA crew exploring Mars when a massive storm threatens their lives. Desperate to escape, they’re forced to leave one astronaut (Matt Damon) on the planet. He then has to try and create a livable habitat for himself until help can arrive. The Martian received 7 Oscar nominations including Best Picture.

    Gladiator II

Scott’s long-awaited sequel to Gladiator is also being called one of his best. The film has received positive reviews and picks up over 20 years after the first movie, now focusing on (spoiler alert) Maximus’ son.

This guide will show you all of Ariana Grande’s best roles in movies and TV shows, including where you can stream them online right now.

Ariana Grande might be one of the biggest pop stars of our generation, but she’s also building a surprisingly robust acting resume as well. In fact, she first broke out into stardom thanks to her Nickelodeon series Victorious, where she starred alongside Victoria Justice. Since then she’s starred in both movies and more television series. Use our guide below to discover Ariana Grande’s best roles and find out where to watch them online.

    Victorious

Victorious follows teenager Tori Vega, who gets accepted to a prestigious performing arts school. The series follows her and her friends on their various adventures. In the show, Grande plays Cat Valentine, Tori’s always-bubbly friend and classmate.

    Sam & Cat

Grande’s Cat ended up getting her own spinoff series alongside Jenette McCurdy. In the show, the duo decide to get after-school jobs as babysitters in Los Angeles…which naturally leads to pure hilarity and chaos.

    Scream Queens

Just as Ariana Grande’s music career started booming, she also starred in the Ryan Murphy horror comedy series Scream Queens. The show centers around the Chanels at Wallace University, who find themselves in the middle of a mystery…and a serial killing spree.

    Hairspray Live!

Part of NBC’s beloved live theater performance series, Grande was joined by stars like Martin Short, Dove Cameron, and Jennifer Hudson to bring John Waters’ bonkers and hilarious musical to life in front of the entire country. Grande played Penny Pingleton, who was portrayed by Amanda Bynes in the film.

    Don’t Look Up

2021’s Don’t Look Up was a massive rebuke of America’s regression and the country’s insistence on ignoring science and facts. In the movie, Grande plays the shallow and ditzy pop star Riley – a critique of the way society is more obsessed with celebrities than actual issues.

    Swindle

The Nick movie Swindle focuses on a group of teenagers who plan a heist to steal back a valuable baseball card from a pawn shop after the owner purchases it from one of them and then plans to resell it for over $1 million. It’s a hilarious take on heist films like Oceans 11.

    Ariana Grande: Dangerous Woman Diaries

In 2018, Grande launched her own YouTube series Ariana Grande: Dangerous Woman Diaries. The series gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the production of her album Sweetener and her massive Dangerous Woman Tour. The show’s final episode “One Love” focuses on the aftermath of Ariana’s Manchester concert bombing.

    Wicked

Easily the largest role of Grande’s acting career so far, she took on the role of Glinda the “Good Witch” in the Hollywood adaptation of Wicked. Releasing in two parts, the second half is set to premiere at the end of 2025.

The world of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz recently returned to the big screen with Wicked. Based on the stage musical of the same name, Wicked follows Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) in the Land of Oz as they strike up an unlikely friendship and head down a path that will one day see them become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North.

For those with a renewed interest in The Wizard of Oz following the release of Wicked, this guide explains where to find every film and TV adaptation in release order by decade. Head over to platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+ to delve into one of cinema’s most iconic and beloved universes.

    1910s

Attempts to adapt L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book began as early as 1908 with the lost film The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays. However, the earliest surviving adaptation is the silent film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910). Baum was actually involved in several early adaptations, writing the screenplay for The Patchwork Girl of Oz, The Magic Cloak of Oz, and His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz.

These early adaptations are all black-and-white, silent films that may be challenging for viewers who don’t enjoy old movies. They still have their merits, though, especially since Baum’s involvement offers viewers an authentic look inside his wonderful world of Oz. Those curious to see how he truly imagined his iconic world and those who go in with an open mind, considering these films are over 100 years old, will find them charming and nostalgic gems.

    • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910)
    • The Patchwork Girl of Oz (1914)
    • His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz (1914)
    • The Magic Cloak of Oz (1914)

    1920s

The 1920s saw just one Wizard of Oz adaptation: The Wizard of Oz (1925). The silent, black-and-white movie puts an interesting spin on the story as it sees Dorothy (Dorothy Dawn) and her farmhands transported to the land of Oz, where she discovers she’s a Princess and her farmhands disguise themselves as the Tin Man (Oliver N. Hardy), Scarecrow (Larry Semon), and the Cowardly Lion (Curtis McHenry).

The Wizard of Oz is a strong adaptation for franchise fans. It’s a little more narratively coherent than the earlier adaptations and boasts stronger slapstick comedy. While it has a chaotic atmosphere, it fits well with this rendition of Oz. At the same time, The Wizard of Oz doesn’t hold up well against more sophisticated short films of the time, like Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid or Disney’s Steamboat Willie (1928). Still, if you’re a seasoned silent film watcher and interested in one of the more creative takes on Baum’s story, The Wizard of Oz is worth a watch.

    • The Wizard of Oz (1925)

    1930s

The 1930s produced, by far, the most famous adaptation of Baum’s work: The Wizard of Oz (1939). Told with music in vibrant technicolor and with the talent of Judy Garland in the lead, The Wizard of Oz was the first film to bring the world of Oz to life properly, capturing its magic and whimsical atmosphere. Although overshadowed by the 1939 adaptation, The Wizard of Oz (1933) stands out as another worthy adaptation, boasting gorgeous hand-drawn animation, a catchy score, and an imaginative take on the story.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) is a must-see not just for fans of the franchise but also for fans of fantasy musicals in general. Viewers who love works like Singin’ in the Rain (1952) or Mary Poppins (1964) won’t want to miss The Wizard of Oz (1939). The Wizard of Oz (1933) also gets closer to matching the animation and creativity of Disney shorts of the time, like the Silly Symphony series, and will appeal to animated silent film fans.

    • The Land of Oz, a Sequel to the Wizard of Oz (1932)
    • The Wizard of Oz (1933)
    • Oz University (1936)
    • The Wizard of Oz (1939)

    1960s

Viewers interested in animated adaptations of Baum’s work and adaptations heavier on creative liberties will love the 1960s era of The Wizard of Oz. The decade saw the release of The Wizard of Mars, one of the most off-kilter adaptations, which turns Baum’s story into a sci-fi/horror movie where Dorothy (Eve Bernhardt) is an astronaut who travels to Mars. On the other hand, faithful and lighthearted animated series like Tales of the Wizard of Oz and Off to See the Wizard created some delightful, family-friendly fun and core memories for young viewers.

The 1960s animated adaptations are more well-suited to modern audiences than earlier ones, as these boast sound and color and are more reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons like The Jetsons (1962) and The Bugs Bunny Show (1960) that most associate with childhood. Although The Wizard of Mars doesn’t hold up against sci-fi spin-offs of other classic novels, like Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964), it may be an interesting watch for curious Wizard of Oz fans.

    • Tales of the Wizard of Oz (1961)
    • Return to Oz (1964)
    • The Wizard of Mars (1965)
    • Off to See the Wizard (1967)
    • Oz: The Tin Woodman’s Dream (1967)
    • The Wonderful Land of Oz (1969)

    1970s

The 1970s are most notable for their creative, musical adaptations of The Wizard of Oz, including Twentieth Century Oz and The Wiz. Twentieth Century Oz offers an adaptation for older audiences with its tale of high school rock music enthusiast Dorothy (Joy Dustan) in a fantastical realm, while The Wiz offers a more diverse adaptation with a Black cast.

The adaptations of the 1970s really demonstrate the endless potential of Baum’s work to be reworked or reimagined for nearly any audience. Fans of adaptations that emphasize diversity, like Annie (2014) and Cinderella (1997), will love The Wiz, while fans of unique, genre-bending musicals like O’Dessa (2025) will be intrigued by Twentieth Century Oz.

    • Journey Back to Oz (1972)
    • The Adventures of Man in Search of a Heart (1974)
    • Twentieth Century Oz (1976)
    • The Wiz (1978)

    1980s

The 1980s were an excellent decade for anime fans and those looking for the most faithful adaptations of Baum’s work. The decade includes the fairly accurate anime The Wizard of Oz (1982) and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1986), as well as the sequel to The Wizard of Oz (1939), Return to Oz (1985), which gained a cult following among fans who felt it was a more accurate adaptation than the 1939 movie.

Viewers will love the gorgeous animation of the anime works and the fact that most of these projects go far beyond the first book in Baum’s series and explore Oz in further depth. If you loved the 1939 movie and want to see another side of Baum’s work, the 1980s are filled with excellent choices.

    • Thanksgiving in the Land of Oz (1980)
    • The Marvelous Land of Oz (1981)
    • The Wizard of Oz (1982)
    • Return to Oz (1985)
    • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1986)
    • Dorothy Meets Ozma of Oz (1987)

    1990s

The 1990s was another big decade for animated adaptations. It included a few particularly creative works, such as The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz’s futuristic reimagining of the story and The Wicked Witch Project’s unique parody of The Wizard of Oz and The Blair Witch Project (1999).

If you’re a fan of ‘90s anime/cartoons like Sailor Moon (1992) and Rugrats (1991), you’ll also love the lighthearted, adventurous animated series The Wizard of Oz (1990) and The Oz Kids (1996). The animated shows hold up well against the animated series of the 1960s, while The Wicked Witch Project will appeal to fans of the more creative adaptations like The Wizard of Mars.

    • The Wizard of Oz (1990)
    • The Wizard of Oz (1991)
    • The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz (1992)
    • The Oz Kids (1996)
    • The Wicked Witch Project (1999)

    2000s

The 2000s offer several unique iterations of Baum’s work for a wide variety of audiences. Lion of Oz provides a Dumbo-esque iteration of The Wizard of Oz for children, while The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz is a surreal, musical experience for kids and teens. Meanwhile, adaptations like Tin Man turn Baum’s work into a riveting, refreshing drama series, reminiscent of Once Upon a Time (2011).

These Wizard of Oz adaptations are perfect for audiences looking for an invigorating and more modern spin on Baum’s work. Tin Man is arguably the best live-action TV adaptation for older audiences. At the same time, Lion of Oz and The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz are excellent choices for those seeking family-friendly adaptations.

    • Lion of Oz (2000)
    • The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz (2005)
    • The Patchwork Girl of Oz (2005)
    • Apocalypse Oz (2006)
    • Tin Man (2007)

    2010s

If you loved the Tin Man, Apocalypse Oz, and The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz, you’ll be pleased to see that adaptations like these are numerous in the 2010s. For fans of Lion of Oz and the Muppets’ crossover, the 2010s saw two fun Tom and Jerry and Wizard of Oz crossovers, while The Steam Engines of Oz has a bit of a Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937) vibe.

Live-action fans are in for a treat with Oz the Great and Powerful, a prequel delving into the Wizard (James Franco), and the teen-friendly series Emerald City and The Witches of Oz. Fans of franchise crossovers, as well as fans of fairy tale remakes, will love these unique and updated takes on Baum’s story.

Wicked (2024) proves a near-flawless adaptation of the stage play due to its impeccable casting, vibrant set designs, dazzling musical numbers, and thoughtful themes. The Dune franchise expanded last year with the new TV series Dune: Prophecy (2024). As a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, the series follows Harkonnen sisters Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams), who construct a Sisterhood along a years-long journey for power and prestige 10,000 years before the time of Paul Atreides.

The series has earned praise for its stunning visuals, powerful lead performances, and expansion of the Bene Gesserit lore. Viewers interested in similar large-scale space opera and sci-fi series can use our guide to find 10 more TV shows like Dune: Prophecy, available to watch on platforms like Disney+, Paramount+, Max, and more.

    Babylon 5 (1993-1998)

Babylon 5 follows Commander Jeffrey Sinclair (Michael O’Hare), Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner), and their crew on the space station Babylon 5 as they navigate a universe with clashing species, political ideologies, and cultures. With its sprawling story and beloved characters, Babylon 5 has gained a cult following and been hailed as a groundbreaking space opera. Although some of the dialogue and CGI effects are now a bit dated, modern viewers can still appreciate the sophisticated storytelling, action, and character development.

Like Dune: Prophecy, it brings a large-scale tale to television and delves into intriguing themes of conflict, leadership, and power. In fact, it made shows like Dune: Prophecy possible by demonstrating that epic space operas could be translated to the small screen. If you love space adventures like Star Trek (1966) and Battlestar Galactica (1978), you’ll love Babylon 5.

    Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000) & Children of Dune (2003)

Viewers who enjoyed Dune: Prophecy may be interested in the prior Dune TV shows. Frank Herbert’s Dune and its sequel, Children of Dune, adapt the first three novels in the Dune book series and see Paul Atreides (Alec Newman) struggle to fulfill his destiny as his family becomes stewards of a coveted planet. The miniseries doesn’t boast the big budget or sophisticated effects of Dune: Prophecy or the Dune movies. However, viewers interested in earlier interpretations of Herbert’s work will likely be interested in the shows.

Like Babylon 5, there’s a little bit of cheesiness and dated effects. Even so, the Dune shows have exemplary performances, and their closeness to the source material makes them must-sees for any Dune fans. Dune and Children of Dune will especially appeal to fans who enjoyed Dune: Prophecy but are seeking a more faithful rather than loose adaptation of the source material.

    Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Game of Thrones is a great epic fantasy alternative to Dune: Prophecy. The series spans many storylines across several years as noble families vie for control of the coveted Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, sparking political strife, war, violence, and drama. Few shows feature as extravagant a scale as Game of Thrones. The large ensemble cast, stunning visuals, and worldbuilding make it one of the best shows of the century, though the gratuitous violence and sex may not be appealing to all viewers.

Game of Thrones leans more into fantasy than sci-fi, but it still parallels Dune: Prophecy with stunning scale and meticulous world-building, lore-establishment, and a story about feuds, vengeance, and the pursuit of power. Viewers who enjoy the scale and storytelling of Dune: Prophecy and Babylon 5, but want something that matches Vikings (2013) in grit, will love Game of Thrones.

    The Expanse (2015-2022)

The Expanse takes place in a futuristic world where humanity has colonized space and new world powers grapple for control. When a young woman goes missing, Josephus "Joe" Miller (Thomas Jane) and his ragtag crew race to investigate the case and maintain the universe’s precarious peace, uncovering shocking truths and conspiracies along the way. The Expanse boasts the gorgeous visuals, world-building, and political intrigue of Dune: Prophecy while also leaning more into the mystery genre.

It especially gained attention for its realism, as it falls into the genre of hard sci-fi with its exploration of science-based and semi-plausible technology. The Expanse definitely has the same vibe as the Dune, Star Wars, and Star Trek franchises, as well as most prominent space operas. However, the sophistication and care with which it handles its world-building and politics elevate its depth for fans seeking a little more complexity.

    Star Trek: Discovery (2017-2024)

Star Trek: Discovery follows Spock’s adopted sister, Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), as she leads the USS Discovery on various adventures to preserve the United Federation of Planets. One of the best things about the series is that viewers don’t have to be big Star Trek fans to enjoy it. It’s one of the lighter series when it comes to callbacks and canon, allowing fans and newcomers alike to enjoy the epic sci-fi adventure.

Like Dune: Prophecy, Star Trek: Discovery boasts an excellent female lead, serves as a sophisticated prequel to an established franchise, and expands Star Trek lore in a clean, meaningful manner. With visuals and heart that harken to the earlier franchise, but with a story that still feels ambitious and distinct, Star Trek: Discovery is excellent for fans looking for a creative and new Star Trek series in the vein of Star Trek: Prodigy (2021).

    Raised by Wolves (2020-2022)

Raised by Wolves tells the story of two androids, Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim), who flee a ravaged Earth with 12 human embryos to colonize planet Kepler-22b and later adopt several children of the Mithraic religious order. Both Raised by Wolves and Dune: Prophecy are unique tales examining what happens when humanity’s fate lies in the hands of a few beings. However, Raised by Wolves is arguably even more ambitious in its bold, daring premise and complex themes.

The series sometimes veers into absurd territory, but this adds to its artfulness and ability to dive deep into complex topics about religious tension and the nature of humanity. Raised by Wolves’ visually stunning and wholly unique world is bursting with symbolism, while it features complex androids unlike any other in sci-fi. Viewers who loved Dune: Prophecy but want a sci-fi series that feels genuinely distinct and unlike any other won’t want to miss Raised by Wolves.

    Foundation (2021-Present)

Foundation is based on Isaac Asimov’s eponymous book series and follows gifted mathematician Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), who predicts the empire’s collapse and forms a group dedicated to preserving humanity. The series, like Dune: Prophecy, ambitiously adapts some of the most significant sci-fi literature of all time. Meanwhile, Foundation’s hard sci-fi premise, stunning visuals, and sprawling scale do justice to Asimov’s work.

Like The Expanse, Foundation falls more into the genre of hard sci-fi, making it especially appealing to fans of cerebral and complex series. It also gets better with each season, continuously topping its visuals, depth, character arcs, and action over time. If you enjoy the scale of Dune: Prophecy and the hard sci-fi of The Expanse and For All Mankind (2019), Foundation is the show for you.

    Andor (2022-2025)

Andor is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) that centers on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he rises from a petty thief to one of the Rebel Alliance’s most influential figures. The series has earned high praise for its gritty premise and sophisticated political commentary. It’s one of the most ambitious and distinct entries in the Star Wars universe, delving far deeper into politics than previous entries and also entering more mature territory.

Both Andor and Dune: Prophecy are sci-fi series that explore people who operate in a morally gray area and how one person’s trauma, beliefs, and motives can impact the universe’s future. While expanding on franchise lore, they also offer stories that are distinct enough to appeal to newcomers. For viewers who love the political intrigue of Dune: Prophecy and have always wanted a deep dive into the Resistance in Star Wars, Andor is a must-see.

    The Acolyte (2024)

Similar to Dune: Prophecy, The Acolyte is a tale of two powerful sisters, Osha and Mai (Amandla Stenberg), whose powerful Force connection and sordid history with several Jedi Masters threaten the Jedi Order. Like Andor, The Acolyte gets into grittier territory than most Star Wars entries, including exploring the flaws of the Jedi. It adds nuanced layers to Star Wars lore while maintaining the spirit of the franchise, especially by featuring some of the best choreographed lightsaber duels in recent history.

The Acolyte is perfect for viewers who especially enjoyed Dune: Prophecy’s feminine-centered plot about women rising to power, seeking vengeance, and contemplating their dark side. Fans who loved Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) but are seeking a little more diversity and complexity will especially enjoy The Acolyte.

This guide will show you great action and adventure holiday movies similar to Red One, and where you can find them streaming online.

The 2024 film Red One sees Santa Claus get kidnapped, forcing a team of experts (Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, and The Rock) to find him and save Christmas. But along the way they encounter other mythical creatures and have a wild journey. With great action and adventure, Red One is a unique Christmas movie that’s perfect for anyone who needs a break from the typical holiday rom-coms.

If you loved Red One, check out these other great movies that are streaming online right now.

Action Holiday Movies Like Red One

Red One is loaded with a great action-packed storyline that feels like a Christmas take on Mission: Impossible. If you want another great action-focused holiday film, be sure to check out Violent Night. In the film, Santa visits a mansion on Christmas night to deliver presents, but he’s interrupted when a group of Christmas-hating mercenaries arrive to kill him. The film turns into an absolute bloodbath and Santa emerges as the holiday season’s new action hero.

Another great action Christmas movie is the Finnish cult hit Rare Exports. In the movie, a mining company in Finland’s Lapland region begins experiencing strange occurrences, only to discover that Santa’s elves are working to free their master…who is actually a giant horned monster intent on torturing the world’s naughty children. Or, check out There’s Something in the Barn. The movie sees a family leave the city and move to a rural homestead before Christmas. But it turns out they have an elf living in their barn. As long as they follow three simple rules, they’ll be ok. Naturally, they don’t and holiday madness ensues.

Adventure Holiday Movies Like Red One

At its core, Red One is a fantastic adventure, so fans will love to dive into other adventurous holiday movies. First up is the Christmas DCOM The Ultimate Christmas Present. In the movie, two young girls (including a young Brenda Song) steal Santa’s weather machine and accidentally cause a massive blizzard in Los Angeles. To save the city, they need to team up with Santa and his elves.

Netflix also has its own original hit Christmas adventure movie with The Christmas Chronicles. In the film, two kids accidentally cause Santa to crash his sleigh, losing all his presents in the process. To save Christmas (and keep themselves off the naughty list) they agree to help Santa deliver the presents. And who can forget The Santa Clause? Easily one of the most iconic Christmas movies ever, the film follows Tim Allen who accidentally causes Santa’s death (oops!), forcing him to become the new Kris Kringle.

Comedy Holiday Movies Like Red One

On top of its action, Red One has a good dose of humor too. Anyone who wants a great Christmas movie with some laughs should check out Apple TV+’s Spirited, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell. The movie puts a fun spin on A Christmas Carol and centers on the Christmas spirits as they work to redeem more souls in the modern day.

Another great comedy is Fred Claus. Fred is the older brother of Santa and has never lived up to his family’s expectations. But after an accident, Fred is forced to grow up and take over Santa’s duties one fateful Christmas. Similarly, there’s Noelle, which stars Anna Kendrick as Santa’s daughter who works to keep the Christmas spirit alive after her father’s untimely death. She and her brother (SNL alum Bill Hader) must take over the family business and save the holiday.

This guide will show you the best Rebecca Ferguson movies and TV shows, and where to watch them on streaming services like Apple TV+, Max, Netflix, and more. We'll also let you know if there are any options to watch Rebecca Ferguson's best movies and shows for free.

    The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train stars Emily Blunt as a manic-depressive alcoholic who has ruined her entire life through drinking. Her ex-husband has moved on and is happy with his new wife (Ferguson), only angering her more. But a mysterious event turns this drama into a psychological thriller.

    The Snowman

In the 2017 psychological thriller The Snowman, Ferguson plays a detective alongside Michael Fassbender. The two are alerted to a crime by a mysterious letter signed with a childlike drawing of a snowman. But the plot quickly thickens and it becomes unclear who they can trust.

    The Greatest Showman

One of the greatest success stories in Hollywood history, The Greatest Showman started off as a cult classic and slowly turned into a sleeper hit in theaters, ultimately staying in cinemas for almost six months. The musical follows the PT Barnum circus during the 1800s and Ferguson plays Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind.

    Silo

Apple TV+’s hit mystery thriller Silo centers on a society that lives in an underground bunker. But some members of the community begin to wonder why they live in the silo and whether it’s all a conspiracy. But trust me, this show takes twists and turns you won't expect. A must-watch for any Rebecca Ferguson fan.

    Dune (Franchise)

The spice must flow! The iconic novel series Dune received its biggest film adaption ever in 2021. The story is an epic space opera about dueling factions, warring kingdoms, class struggles, and the galactic dependency on a resource known as “spice”. Rebecca Ferguson also returns as Lady Jessica for the sequel, Dune: Part Two.

    The White Queen

Ferguson earned herself a Golden Globe nom for portraying Elizabeth Woodville from the House of York in The White Queen. The series depicts the Wars of the Roses, a tumultuous time period when numerous women fought for control of England’s monarchy.

    Florence Foster Jenkins

Always off-pitch and riddled with syphilis, opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins is an odd choice for a folk hero, but her deficiencies are ultimately what made the public love her. Meryl Streep earned an Oscar nom portraying the singer and Ferguson had a supporting role as Kathleen Weatherley, the wife of Broadway legend St. Clair Bayfield.

    Doctor Sleep

Doctor Sleep is a sequel to Stephen King’s hit The Shining and follows Dan who is now an adult. Still gifted with the shining ability, Dan finds himself stalked by a cult that feeds off those witch psychic powers. The cult is led by the infamous Rose the Hat (Ferguson).

    Mission: Impossible (Franchise)

She eventually allies with Ethan and the MI team to save the world. Rebecca Ferguson made her debut in the Mission Impossible franchise in 2015, with a key role in Rogue Nation. The Kid Who Would Be King

The famous tale of King Arthur is retold in the modern day with The Kid Who Would Be King. In the movie, a young boy finds the mythical sword of Excalibur, launching him on an epic journey… that is later revealed to be a retelling of King Arthur. Ferguson plays the evil enchantress Morgana.

  • The 10 Best TV Shows Like 'Silo' (And Where You Can Watch Them)

The 10 Best TV Shows Like 'Silo' (And Where You Can Watch Them)

    Rachel Ulatowski

    Rachel Ulatowski

    JustWatch Editor

Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed original series Silo (2023) will return for a third and fourth season. The show is a unique dystopian sci-fi series with elements of mystery, following engineer Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) as she lives in a 144-level underground silo with 10,000 other people. She must solve the puzzle of her people’s past and present, including whether the outside is inhabitable.

Viewers looking for more dystopian sci-fi/mystery series while awaiting Silo Season 3 can use our guide to find similar TV shows on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV+, and more.

    Brave New World (2020)

Brave New World follows the residents of New London, whose “utopia” begins to show cracks when John the Savage (Alden Ehrenreich) arrives and introduces its residents to ideas outside its stringent caste system. The series mirrors Silo with its story of the New London inhabitants' desire for truth and freedom. Additionally, it’s an excellent choice for fans of hard sci-fi and Aldous Huxley’s novel of the same name.

Brave New World is visually stunning, philosophical, and filled with compelling, fully developed characters. With a slightly dark tone and societal focus, the series parallels Altered Carbon (2018) and Black Mirror (2011), making it particularly intriguing if you love dystopian and satirical sci-fi.

    Counterpart (2017-2019)

Counterpart is perfect for viewers looking for a mind-bending sci-fi mystery similar to Silo. The show centers on Howard Silk (J. K. Simmons), a man who discovers that his employer has been hiding a secret about a parallel universe. It’s among the most underrated sci-fi mystery series with brilliant performances, an ambitious premise, and thrilling twists. It has more of a spy drama premise than Silo, but it boasts a similar dark tone and intelligent mystery.

One of the best parts of Counterpart is seeing Simmons portray doppelgängers and succeed at making each one distinct. If you enjoy stories about doppelgängers or clones, such as Orphan Black (2013), or mind-bending, complex sci-fi shows like Dark Matter (2024), Counterpart is the perfect watch.

    Dark Matter (2024-Present)

Dark Matter is another excellent sci-fi series from Apple TV+. The show sees physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) forced to travel through a series of alternate realities to return home. Like Silo, it’s a top-notch, mind-bending, and mesmerizing sci-fi series where things are never quite as they seem. However, it also sets itself apart with the more personal, intimate story and family drama at its core.

Dark Matter offers the twists, turns, and complexity of both Silo and Counterpart, but it also echoes series like Invasion (2021) in that it tackles topics like regret, fulfillment, and human behavior.

    Fallout (2024-Present)

Fallout follows Lucy (Ella Purnell), a girl raised in an underground bunker until violence sends her into the outside world, where she realizes much of what she has been told of her situation is a lie. The show boasts the most similar premise to Silo, as both series take place in underground bunkers and follow women on quests to discover the truth about their way of life.

It also touches lightly on shifting loyalties and the development of factions in the claustrophobic environment. However, Fallout centers more heavily on action and worldbuilding than Silo and is a lot more brutal. Viewers who like the concept of Silo but prefer a little less focus on mystery and a grittier tone will love Fallout.

    Severance (2022-Present)

In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) works for a shadowy organization that performs surgeries to separate employees' personal lives from their work lives. The mysterious disappearance of one of his colleagues inspires Mark to investigate what his company truly does.

Severance parallels Silo’s slow-burning mystery and bold, complex sci-fi premise, but it also differentiates itself with the unique “severance” procedure and satirical commentary on corporate culture. It’s every bit as thought-provoking as Silo, but it also parallels the complexity of Counterpart and Dark Matter while adding a bit of horror as the cherry on top.

    Station Eleven (2021-2022)

Station Eleven focuses on a small group of survivors from a deadly flu pandemic, who make a living as travelling performers in their post-apocalyptic society. It’s similar to Silo with its haunting atmosphere and slow-burning mystery, though the miniseries format allows Station Eleven to streamline its story a bit, resulting in a very satisfying conclusion.

Station Eleven leans more into a character-study format, delving deep into human resilience and morality set to the eerie backdrop of the apocalypse. The series offers a very distinct take on the post-apocalyptic genre. It doesn’t boast the action and grit some may expect when comparing it to other post-apocalyptic shows like The Walking Dead (2010). Instead, it more closely parallels The Last of Us (2023) with its thought-provoking commentary on humanity.

    The Peripheral (2022)

The Peripheral takes place in a futuristic world where a young woman, Flynn Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz), discovers a startlingly realistic virtual reality simulator in which a mysterious figure gives her orders. Like Silo, The Peripheral boasts an ambitious and complex premise. While the complexity may feel a bit tedious to some, it’s an excellent show for those seeking a cerebral challenge.

Given the focus on virtual reality and the mind-bending nature of the show, The Peripheral most closely resembles The Matrix (1999) in tone and atmosphere. If you’re interested in a Matrix-esque series that still delves into the unknown as Silo does, The Peripheral is a must-see.

    Under the Dome (2013-2015)

In Under the Dome, the residents of Chester's Mill, Maine, wake up one day to discover their small town separated from the rest of the world by a transparent dome. Although the context is different, Under the Dome is similar to Silo and Fallout in that it examines what happens when a small subset of humanity is confined to one space together, including the violence, hierarchies, and factions that quickly arise.

Not only is it an intriguing study on human behavior, but it is also an addictive mystery as the characters struggle to get to the bottom of what is happening. You’ll love Under the Dome if you’re looking for a unique drama with the claustrophobia of Silo and the horror of Severance.

    Wayward Pines (2015-2016)

Wayward Pines is a sci-fi mystery centered on the eerie titular town, which is home to a number of confounding disappearances. If you want a series even more focused on mystery than Silo, Wayward Pines is the show for you.

In a way, Wayward Pines' setting within a supposedly idyllic town is even more unsettling than the underground bunker, perpetuating a constant atmosphere of dread as viewers realize everything is not as it seems. Similar to Silo, though, it keeps you on the edge of your seat with its irresistible mystery. The series is weird, creepy, and mystifying, and will stir nostalgia for Twin Peaks (1990) and other small-town horror.

    Westworld (2016-2022)

Westworld centers on an amusement park where wealthy vacationers utilize humanoid robots to live out their fantasies—until the robots unexpectedly become sentient. The series offers the sci-fi/mystery premise of Silo and a strikingly similar musical score, but it is very distinct with its Western vibes and deep dive into the moral and ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence and humanoid robots.

Westworld offers a wholly engaging experience through its stunning visuals, meticulous worldbuilding, and philosophical perspective. Fans of the original 1973 film will love this reimagining, while fans of Silo will enjoy the sense of mystery and genre-blending.

  • How To Watch The 'Yellowstone' TV Shows In Order

How To Watch The 'Yellowstone' TV Shows In Order

    Rachel Ulatowski

    Rachel Ulatowski

    JustWatch Editor

After almost a two-year wait, the last half of Yellowstone Season 5 arrived in 2025, marking the end of the critically acclaimed neo-western series. Although the original series has come to a close, Yellowstone will live on as a full-fledged franchise with numerous spin-off series.

With a plethora of spin-offs on the docket, including The Madison and 1944, those interested in catching up with the Yellowstone franchise can use our guide to find out how to stream the shows in release date order on platforms like Paramount+, Peacock, and more.

    Yellowstone (2018-2025)

Yellowstone kicked off Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise in 2018. The series centers on the Dutton family, who struggle to maintain the largest cattle ranch in Montana while dealing with business issues and family drama.

The series is a unique blend of a modern western and family drama, boasting gorgeous settings and a comforting sense of escapism. The performances are also top-notch, including Kevin Costner’s fierce, powerhouse depiction of John Dutton. Fans of neo-westerns and comfort television, like Longmire (2012) and Ransom Canyon (2025), will love Yellowstone as it balances western grit with beautiful scenery and relatable drama.

    1883 (2021-2022)

1883 is the first prequel to Yellowstone. It follows the post-Civil War generation of the Dutton family as they begin the journey that will ultimately see them settle in Montana. Due to its setting in the 1880s, 1883 is more of a proper western than Yellowstone. It leans into historical accuracy and realism and quite authentically portrays pioneer and wagon train life. As a result, it’s even grittier and darker than Yellowstone, exploring violence and loss with a somber and sometimes bleak tone.

If you enjoyed Yellowstone but are seeking something set outside the present, 1883 is an excellent choice with a seriousness and setting that are reminiscent of Deadwood (2004) and The English (2022). Given its prequel status and early 19th-century setting, viewers seeking to watch the Yellowstone shows in chronological order would start with 1883. However, beginning with Yellowstone is recommended for newcomers to draw you into the universe and give you a better appreciation of the Dutton family legacy and heightened curiosity about where it all started before diving into 1883.

    1923 (2022-2025)

1923 is another Yellowstone prequel, which centers on Cara (Helen Mirren) and Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), as they see their family and ranch through the turbulent 1920s, including the Great Depression and prohibition.

The series aligns closer with 1883 than Yellowstone, boasting a similar gritty and somber tone as it delves into its historical setting. However, it sets itself apart with the star power of Ford and Mirren, who elevate the show with their chemistry and emotional performances. The story also delves more deeply into the topics of family and survival. 1923 offers the drama and western vibes of Yellowstone, but also the setting and grit of Boardwalk Empire (2010) and Damnation (2017).

    The Madison (TBD)

A Yellowstone spin-off series, The Madison, is currently in development. Although the show was initially to be titled 2024, the title was ultimately changed to The Madison. The series is set in the present day and stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, a woman who moves with her family to Montana after suffering a personal tragedy.

As of now, the family at the center of The Madison appears not to have any connection to the Duttons. It remains to be seen if the Dutton family will make an appearance or if The Madison is simply set in the same universe but without a direct connection to Yellowstone.

    6666 (TBD)

6666 is another Yellowstone spin-off series currently in development. The title refers to the 6666 Ranch, which Yellowstone features briefly. It is unclear what time period the series is set in. If set in the present day, viewers suspect the series will follow Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White), who left the Yellowstone ranch to work at 6666 in Texas. However, no cast or plot details have been confirmed as of this writing.

    1944 (TBD)

A third Yellowstone prequel, 1944, is also in development. While no cast or plot details have been confirmed, the setting in 1944 means it is likely a sequel to 1923 and could feature some of the characters from that Dutton generation.

One of Arcane’s most prominent themes is the battle between the haves and have-nots in the cities of Piltover and Zaun. Another great sci-fi tale about class struggle is the film Elysium. In the movie, the rich and powerful live aboard a space station called Elysium, while the poor are forced to suffer on the barren, diseased remnants of Earth. But a group of rebels fight for equality.

    Snowpiercer

Another great sci-fi film about class struggle is Snowpiercer. The movie is set in a dystopian future where the last remnants of humanity live aboard a giant ever-moving train. But the train is separated by class, with the poor forced to live with nothing in the back, while the rich enjoy life’s finer things up front. But a rebellion brings chaos to the train.

    The Hunger Games

The most famous example of class struggle – with a good dose of action too – is The Hunger Games. In the film series, Panem is broken up into districts, with some being home to the wealthy and powerful, and others being inhabited by the poor working class. To distract the nation from the rampant disparity, the government created a battle royale called the Hunger Games.

    Video Game Adaptations like Arcane

    Twisted Metal

Set in an alternate history, Twisted Metal sees a post-apocalyptic America heavily fractured by crime and greed. The wealthy live safely behind walled cities, while everyone else is forced to scavenge in the barren wastelands. The show offers a good dose of action and social commentary, perfect for Arcane fans.

    Fallout

Another video game adaptation that has lots of action, as well as themes of class struggle and corruption, is Fallout. In the show, a young girl who has spent her entire life in an underground vault must venture to the surface to find her kidnapped father.

    Super Mario Bros.

Unlike the colorful animated 2023 movie, the original 1993 Mario movie takes place in a cyberpunk underground city controlled by corruption. Anyone who loves the undercity of Zaun in Arcane will appreciate this truly unique take on the Nintendo classic.

    Animated Series like Arcane

    Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Also inspired by a video game, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has great colors and animation. The series takes place in the crime-riddled and corrupt Night City and follows high-tech smugglers known as edgerunners. Fans of the game will love diving further into the story with this series.

    The Legend of Vox Machina

Created by the team at Critical Role and inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, The Legend of Vox Machina is loaded with adventure, action, adult humor, and a mature animation style. It also does a great job at including lots of D&D Easter eggs, which players will love.

There is a very good chance that 2025 could be the biggest box office year in cinema history. Now that the pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes are fully behind us, the film industry kicked into high gear in 2024. That means 2025 is going to be a great year for audiences.

Some of the most anticipated movies of 2023 include Marvel blockbusters Captain America: Brave New World and Fantastic Four, the DC Universe's Superman, Tron: Ares, Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, the Minecraft Movie, and many more. In this guide, you can browse through all of the most anticipated movies of 2025 and where you can watch them when they are available on streaming services.

Many of the Most Anticipated Movies of 2025 are Sequels

The biggest earners of 2025 will likely be high-profile sequels. This includes titles such as Tron: Ares, which follows up after the events of 2010’s Tron: Legacy, and 28 Years Later, which continues Danny Boyle’s award-winning zombie franchise. Jurassic Park is also getting a huge sequel with Jurassic World Rebirth, starring Scarlett Johansson, while the Avatar franchise continues with Avatar: Fire & Ash.

Most Anticipated Movie Remakes to Watch in 2025

The movie slate for 2025 is loaded with big-budget remakes. Some of the remakes fans can look forward to are the new comedy The Naked Gun, starring Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson, and Wolf Man, which is a retelling of the iconic 1941 Universal horror movie of the same name. Another anticipated remake to add to your watchlist this year is Until Dawn, an adaptation of the popular cinematic PlayStation game of the same name.

Original Movies to Watch in 2025

On top of the sequels and remakes, 2025 is set to have a good number of original films as well. One of the most anticipated (and potentially controversial) is the biopic Michael, which will examine the life and career of Michael Jackson. Michael will be portrayed by his nephew Jaafar Jackson, which has many wondering if the movie will tackle the singer’s controversies or attempt to whitewash his legacy.

Another original story will be A Minecraft Movie. While it’s technically an adaption, the film’s trailer shows that it is nothing like the games and instead sees a group of humans get transported into the blocky realm, creating its own original story. Also coming to theaters will be the long-delayed sci-fi epic Mickey 17, directed by Oscar-winning Parasite director Bong Joon-ho. Studios such as A24 and Neon also have plenty of original movies scheduled for release in 2025 – including On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, Presence and The Legend of Ochi.

10 Great Movies To Watch If You Liked 'The Substance'

    Rachel Ulatowski

    Rachel Ulatowski

    JustWatch Editor

Demi Moore’s comeback film, The Substance, generated buzz among audiences in 2024. Mixing body horror with feminism, the movie tackles the impact of the value society places on women’s youth through grotesque body transformations. It is sure to thrill and disgust the most ardent fans of body horror.

Viewers eager for more movies like The Substance can use our guide to find 10 similar films, including body horror, psychological horror, beauty standards, and feminist films, available on platforms like HBO Max, Netflix, and more.

    Eyes Without a Face (1960)

In Eyes Without a Face, Doctor Génessier (Pierre Brasseur) becomes obsessed with performing a successful face transplant on his daughter, Christiane (Édith Scob), who was left disfigured in an automobile accident. It’s a dark and sobering movie that went on to have a profound influence on the horror genre and body horror subgenre. From the Doctor’s obsession to the harrowing skin graft scenes to the pain in Christiane's eyes through her featureless mask, Eyes Without a Face evokes horror even without the sophistication of today’s visual effects.

The film is an excellent alternative to those seeking something less grotesque and outlandish than The Substance. However, it still includes some light body horror and thought-provoking themes about the impact of female beauty standards created by the patriarchy. Eyes Without a Face is an excellent choice for fans of nightmarish movies like Repulsion (1965) and The Skin I Live In (2011).

    The Thing (1982)

The Thing is a classic must-see for fans of body horror. The film follows a group of researchers who come across an extraterrestrial humanoid life form that absorbs and imitates other beings. Since its 1982 release, it has gained a cult classic status for its terrifying body horror, nihilistic premise, and commentary on paranoia and fear.

While the abilities of this terrifying extraterrestrial allow for much alien gore and body horror, the true horror comes from the psychological impact of the fear of the unknown and unknowable. The Thing parallels The Substance with its body horror and the idea of someone not being who they appear to be. However, the extraterrestrial element and the paranoia it induces more closely resemble those of other iconic sci-fi horror works, such as Alien (1979) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).

    Society (1989)

Society is a body horror comedy that follows a teenage boy, Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock), who becomes suspicious that his wealthy family is involved in some gruesome rituals. It’s a bold, absurd horror movie that utilizes satire to probe wealth inequality and the secrets held by the wealthy elite.

Like The Substance, it tackles essential subject matter and drives its point by evoking shock and disgust in viewers. Instead of deconstructing beauty standards and ageism, it offers thoughtful commentary on classism and elitism. If you like Eyes Without a Face and The Thing but are seeking something even more brazenly strange and bold, you’ll enjoy Society.

    Death Becomes Her (1992)

Death Becomes Her follows two women, Madeline (Meryl Streep) and Helen (Goldie Hawn), whose feud over the same lover leads them on a dangerous quest for eternal youth and immortality. While the film features light body horror, it also boasts a darkly comedic tone. The morbid humor that arises as the women learn that being immortal doesn’t make their bodies invincible or self-healing puts a satirical, witty spin on the perils of vanity.

Death Becomes Her strongly parallels The Substance with its story of two women forced to go to great lengths due to society’s refusal to accept their aging. It’s a quirky, campy body horror movie with a biting commentary on society’s attitude toward women. The film combines the campiness of The Thing and the satire of Society with the thought-provoking, more female-centric themes of The Substance.

    Black Swan (2010)

In the psychological horror film Black Swan, professional ballerina Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) finds herself cracking under the pressure of her profession and beginning to question reality. It’s an even darker tale than The Substance, without some of the campiness and morbid humor to soften the psychological thrills. Nonetheless, Black Swan’s themes go hand-in-hand with The Substance in that they’re mind-bending horror films that poignantly explore the steep price women pay for perfection.

Black Swan goes in-depth about how professions, like ballet, can exacerbate the anxiety and stress women already experience when it comes to unreasonable beauty standards. It also parallels Death Becomes Her with its tale of a protagonist who digs themselves into a hole in their pursuit of success and struggles with self-destructive patterns. If you love ballet-centered horror with thought-provoking themes, like Suspiria (1977), you’ll love Black Swan.

    Raw (2016)

Raw is a coming-of-age body horror movie about a vegetarian, Justine (Garance Marillier), who develops an insatiable craving for human flesh after eating meat for the first time. It’s a unique cannibalistic body horror film that will delight those seeking the shock factor. The extreme nature of the movie and its gory and violent depictions evoke New French Extremity vibes.

Like The Substance, though, Raw is rich in symbolism and tackles numerous feminine themes, including the loss of innocence and female shame. Just as The Substance utilizes body horror to drive home its themes, Raw uses cannibalism as a metaphor for sexual awakening. Raw is like a cross between Bones and All (2022) and The Substance, mixing cannibalism and feminist themes and commanding viewers’ attention through shock and horror.

    Swallow (2020)

Swallow follows Hunter Conrad (Haley Bennett), a woman who develops an insatiable urge to eat non-edible objects to cope with her isolated and oppressed domestic life. This unconventional feminine horror movie uses body horror and pica to convey the impact of sexism, gender roles, and women’s desire for bodily autonomy and self-control. Like Raw, it evokes New French Extremity vibes but is not quite as gory, making it a good choice for viewers seeking the depth of The Substance but less body horror and grotesque imagery.

Swallow relies more on psychological horror than body horror, telling an intimate, disturbing tale that still captures inner turmoil without extreme visuals. In this manner, it subverts some horror tropes and offers something inventive to the genre. Viewers who loved Raw and Titane (2021) will especially enjoy Swallow’s themes and French Extremity parallels.

    Cuckoo (2024)

Cuckoo follows Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), a young woman who finds herself embroiled in a mystery as a hooded woman stalks her, and she experiences disturbing visions and sounds. The film can be confusing and ambiguous in its message compared to The Substance. It’s a little more reminiscent of Society through its complexity and utilization of parasitism to drive its interpretation.

However, for those undaunted by its complexity and occasional foray into sci-fi territory, it’s a satisfying body horror film that uses its unique imagery and premise as an allegory for bodily autonomy. Cuckoo is an excellent choice for fans of more eccentric horror movies, like Society, that still offer similar themes to The Substance.

    Uglies (2024)

Uglies tells the story of Tally Youngblood (Joey King), who lives in a dystopian society where everyone is required to undergo an operation at the age of 16 to become “perfect.” While Uglies isn’t a horror movie, it’s similar to The Substance in that it brings the harm of beauty standards to the forefront. The extreme society it envisions paints a harrowing picture of how beauty standards are often utilized as a form of societal control and to encourage conformity.

However, since a YA novel inspires it, Uglies doesn’t delve into dark territory or body horror, making it an excellent choice for viewers seeking the sharp themes of The Substance but in a more family-friendly format. Viewers who enjoy other dystopian YA-based properties, like The Hunger Games (2012) and The Maze Runner (2014), will also like Uglies.

    A Different Man (2024)

A Different Man follows Edward Lemuel (Sebastian Stan), who begins to question his decision to undergo treatment for his neurofibromatosis after meeting Oswald (Adam Pearson), who has the same condition but embraces it, earning the popularity and success Edward craves. It’s less of a horror film and more of a psychological thriller, riddled with morbid humor, eccentricity, and unpredictable twists and turns.

Through bold, surreal storytelling, A Different Man poignantly delves into thought-provoking themes of identity and acceptance. Its lack of body horror makes it an excellent alternative for viewers seeking similar subject matter to The Substance but without some of the extreme imagery.

Mary Shelley shocked the world in 1818 with her novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus. The story centered around Victor Frankenstein, who uses body parts to create a living creature. But unsure of what to do or how to live, Frankenstein’s monster finds himself in trouble. Since then, Frankenstein’s monster has taken on a life of his own – most notably being known simply as Frankenstein – and taking on the green appearance with bolts in his neck.

Check out our guide below to find out where you can watch the best Frankenstein movies online.

A vast majority of Frankenstein movies came out in the earliest days of Hollywood. In fact, the first Frankenstein film premiered back in 1910 before movies even had sound. But the most iconic film was the 1931 Frankenstein film, which became a smash hit and served as one of the earliest examples of a popular horror movie. After that, Frankenstein received tons of sequels and spin-offs during the “Golden Age of Hollywood” including movies like Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and Bride of Frankenstein.

But Frankenstein has also had some hilarious adaptations too, most notably Young Frankenstein. Starring Gene Wilder and directed by Mel Brooks, this hilarious movie sees the grandson of Victor Frankenstein attempt to make his own waves in the scientific community… resulting in some hilariously awful shenanigans. Another funny take on Frankenstein is Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. In the movie, the iconic comedy duo encounter the horror legend. Basically, it’s a horror version of The Three Stooges, making it a great watch.

There’s also been some more modern adaptations of the story too, most notably Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which went back to the actual novel and told its story instead of using Frankenstein as a villain. Even more recent was Victor Frankenstein, where James McAvoy plays Dr. Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe plays his assistant Igor. Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein adaptation is set to release in 2025 with an all-star cast including Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi and Mia Goth.

  • How To Watch Every Poltergeist Movie and TV Show in Order

How To Watch Every Poltergeist Movie and TV Show in Order

    Rachel Ulatowski

    Rachel Ulatowski

    JustWatch Editor

Poltergeist is a celebrated classic in the horror genre praised for its terrifying special effects and entwining of a haunted house tale with the touching story of a close-knit family. In 2023, Amazon MGM Studios announced it was developing a new Poltergeist series, marking the first return to the franchise in nearly a decade. Viewers wishing to get acquainted with the franchise before the new series can use our guide to find out how to watch the Poltergeist films and TV series in order.

The 1982 original movie was developed from a story by Steven Spielberg, who also co-wrote the script. It follows the Freelings, a Californian family who are perplexed when their youngest daughter, Carol Ann (Heather O’Rourke), begins inexplicably communicating with the TV static and ominously informs her family, “They’re here.” Her parents, Steven (Craig T. Nelson) and Diana (JoBeth Williams), and sisters soon find themselves terrorized by poltergeists who seek to kidnap Carol Anne.

Poltergeist was a critical and commercial success. Critics praised O’Rourke’s incredible performance, the movie’s frightening premise and effects, and the ambitious story of a family forced to prove their love when faced with malevolent poltergeists. To this day, it’s considered one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

In 1986, a direct sequel, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, premiered. Set one year after the first film's events, the sequel sees the return of the Freeling family and further explores the main antagonist, The Beast, establishing he is the vengeful spirit of a former preacher and cult leader, Henry Kane, who seeks to claim Carol Anne. Desperate to save their daughter, the family turns to an Indigenous shaman, Taylor (Will Sampson), for help. While the sequel received praise for O’Rourke’s performance, iconic “They’re baa-ack” line, and the visual effects, critics panned its story as far-fetched and unnecessary.

Nonetheless, a third movie, Poltergeist III, was greenlit and premiered in 1988. O’Rourke was the only member of the Freeling family to return, and the film follows her placement with her aunt and uncle, Pat (Nancy Allen) and Bruce (Tom Skerritt). Struggling with feeling rejected by family, Carol Anne becomes vulnerable to Kane’s attacks again. Like the sequel, Poltergeist III struggled to prove the necessity of its storyline and was the lowest-grossing film in the franchise.

Poltergeist wouldn’t return to the big screen for another 27 years. Finally, in 2015, director Gil Kenan rebooted the franchise with Poltergeist (2015). It follows Eric (Sam Rockwell) and Amy Bowen (Rosemarie DeWitt), who are terrorized by poltergeists after the spirits connect with their daughter Maddy (Kennedi Clements). Although the film effectively paid homage to the original and was praised for its jump scares, it failed to recapture the magic of the first movie.

How to watch the Poltergeist franchise in order

Watching the Poltergeist franchise in order is quite simple, as the original series has the same chronological and release date order. It’s recommended to start with the original series before watching the reboot. Meanwhile, there is also a Poltergeist TV show, Poltergeist: The Legacy, which ran from 1996 - 1999. It’s not connected to the films; instead, it follows a secret society that fights paranormal forces. Since it’s also unrelated to the original films, the show can be watched at any point along with the remake. The best order to watch the franchise is:

    • Poltergeist
    • Poltergeist II: The Other Side
    • Poltergeist III
    • Poltergeist (2015)
    • Poltergeist: The Legacy

Horror TV shows to watch on Halloween 2024

    From

The third season of From was recently released on Netflix, so there’s no better time to catch up on the supernatural TV show. It centers on a small town in which the residents, for mysterious and unknown reasons, cannot escape.

    Agatha All Along

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) celebrates Halloween with the conclusion of Agatha All Along. It tells the story of Agatha Harkness (best known as the villain in WandaVision) as she attempts to regain her powers.

    Interview with the Vampire

Season two of Interview with the Vampire was released earlier this year, with a third season already planned for early next year. The TV show is based on Anne Rice’s novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a movie in 1994.

    Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets follows a high-school soccer team that gets stranded in the wilderness. Years later, the survivors are reunited and must confront their past. Over the Garden Wall

So far, we’ve gotten 11 Hellraiser films since the original premiered back in 1987. In general, the franchise goes relatively in order, though there are a few differences between the release date order and chronological order.

Use our guide below to find out how to watch every Hellraiser movie in order using streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Max and more.

Hellraiser Movies in Release Date Order

    • Hellraiser (1987)
    • Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)
    • Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992)
    • Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)
    • Hellraiser: Inferno (2000)
    • Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002)
    • Hellraiser: Deader (2005)
    • Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005)
    • Hellraiser: Revelations (2011)
    • Hellraiser: Judgment (2018)
    • Hellraiser (2022)

    Hellraiser Movies in Chronological Order

    Hellraiser

Chronologically, the first movie actually is the first in the franchise. In the film, a young girl named Kirsty discovers that her mother has been having an affair with her father’s brother…who has recently vanished. But after an accident, his body begins to resurrect itself in their attic thanks to a mysterious puzzle box. Unfortunately, the puzzle box also calls upon a race of eternal undead beings who have no comprehension between pleasure and pain, the Cenobites.

    Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Kirsty returns for the sequel and, now in a mental hospital after the events of the first film, believes she’s being visited by her dead father in her dreams. He tells her that he’s trapped in Hell and needs help. Kirsty’s mom also enters Hell, but for much more nefarious reasons.

    Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth

Taking place in New York City, the lead Cenobite Pinhead is now more evil than ever after the events of the second film (he’s now pure “id”). Even worse, Pinhead finds himself being resurrected in the luxury apartment of a pleasure-obsessed young man…giving Pinhead all the fuel he needs to gain his strength and bring “good suffering” to the Big Apple.

    Hellraiser: Inferno

Inferno was the first Hellraiser film to be a straight-to-video release (as would every sequel that followed) and follows a corrupt police officer who stumbles upon the puzzle box (known by fans as the Lament Configuration) and soon he starts having horrific visions. No spoilers here, but the finale gives viewers a shocking twist.

    Hellraiser: Hellseeker

For the first time since Hellbound, Kirsty appears in the franchise once again. In the movie, Kirsty is believed to be dead after her boyfriend crashes their car. But then her boyfriend begins experiencing strange phenomena and there’s a shocking twist ending…but heads up, that “twist” is the exact same as Inferno.

    Hellraiser: Deader

In Deader, a journalist is sent to investigate a mysterious cult known as the Deadites who claim they can kill and resurrect their followers. As you can probably assume, they’re doing this with the help of the puzzle box…and with enough meddling, Pinhead arrives to collect what’s his.

    Hellraiser: Revelations

Revelations focuses on two friends who go on a debaucherous vacation in Mexico, ultimately finding the puzzle box and getting themselves killed. A year later their families find the puzzle box and the madness begins again. But heads up, this film is bad…like, really bad. Hellraiser’s creator Clive Barker even tweeted upon its release, “I have NOTHING to do with the fuckin' thing. If they claim it’s from the mind of Clive Barker, it's a lie. It's not even from my butt-hole.”

    Hellraiser: Judgment

In Judgement, Pinhead is in discussions with other rulers of Hell on how best to keep the portal between the mortal world and theirs open. During the debate, there’s a serial killer running loose on Earth. Also, Heaven and God get involved. Basically, this becomes a heavily religious movie that has a completely new vibe.

    Hellraiser: Bloodline

Though it was the fourth film released (and the final movie to be released in theaters), Bloodline is actually the last chronologically because it takes place in the year 2127 in outer space. In the movie, Pinhead is summoned aboard a space station and meets his ultimate demise.

    Standalone Hellraiser Movies

    Hellraiser: Hellworld

Similar to movies like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Hellworld went super meta, taking place outside the chronological order. In the movie, a group of friends play a video game inspired by the Hellraiser franchise…leading to one of them committing suicide. To get revenge, his father decides to kill them, but ends up meeting the real Pinhead himself.

    Hellraiser

In 2022, Hulu released a Hellraiser reboot with Jamie Clayton starring as Pinhead. The movie doesn’t follow the original story and instead creates its own, following a group of young people who are invited to a party in a mansion. But they discover it’s actually a trap to give sacrifices to the Cenobites.

The Child’s Play franchise, also known as the Chucky franchise, has delighted horror and slasher fans for over thirty years. Following the original film’s premiere, Chucky (Brad Dourif) became a horror icon, spawning a franchise consisting of nine movies, a TV series, and a short film. Check out our guide to find out where to watch every entry in the Child’s Play franchise in order.

The franchise started with the premiere of Child’s Play in 1988. The film follows Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), a young boy gifted a Good Guy doll for his birthday. Unbeknownst to him and his mother, Karen (Catherine Hicks), the doll is inhabited by the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray and comes to life to terrorize them. Child’s Play was a success, earning praise for its unique and terrifying puppetry and bold decision to make the primary victim of the film a child.

The film received a direct sequel, Child’s Play 2, which takes place two years after the original movie and sees Chucky reanimated. He quickly finds Andy and terrorizes him and his new friend Kyle (Christine Elise). The third movie, Child’s Play 3, premiered less than a year later and featured an eight-year time skip, focusing on a teenage Andy (Justin Whalin) who deals with Chucky while enrolled in Kent Military School. Unfortunately, both sequels failed to replicate the original’s box office success and were criticized for rehashing the same horror and slasher elements from the first film.

Hence, Child’s Play went on a seven-year hiatus before returning with Bride of Chucky. In the movie, Ray’s ex-girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) revives Chucky before becoming a doll herself. Not only did the film garner praise for its dark humor and gain a cult following, but it was also praised for improving the franchise by shifting focus to the dolls and including LGBTQ+ representation with Tiffany, who is bisexual.

The fifth installment, Seed of Chucky, continues the dolls’ storyline with Chucky’s son, Glen (Billy Boyd), resurrecting Chucky and Tiffany, who are appalled to learn their offspring has no violent tendencies. However, the final two canon films, Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky return to the source material. In Curse of Chucky, Chucky finds a new family to terrorize, while the franchise comes full circle in Cult of Chucky with the return of Andy (Vincent). The sixth and seventh installments received the most positive critical reception in the franchise as the movies covered new ground and brought a new sense of terror to Chucky.

While Cult of Chucky played out like a finale and the next film was the reboot Child’s Play (2019) with Mark Hamill as Chucky, the original storyline continued with the TV series Chucky. The series sees Chucky fall into the hands of a teenage boy, Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), who struggles to resist Chucky’s influence while navigating high school and relationships.

How to watch the Child’s Play movies and TV shows in order

Watching the Child’s Play movies and TV shows in order is quite simple, as the chronological and release date order are the same. The only outlier is Child’s Play (2019). See below for the release date/chronological order of the Child’s Play franchise:

    • Child’s Play (1988)
    • Child’s Play 2 (1990)

    • Bride of Chucky (1998)

How to Watch the (Real) Amityville Horror Movies in Order

I bet you had no idea that The Amityville Horror is actually one of the sloppiest, messiest franchises in Hollywood history. It doesn’t help that the “real” events the original movie is based on are also highly contested, with many claiming to have proof the Lutz family were hoaxers looking for a big payday. Regardless of whether it’s real or fake, the original Amityville movie provides enough scares to make it a worthwhile watch for horror fans. Check out our guide below to find out where to watch the real Amityville Horror movies online.

Notice I said “real”. That’s because the Amityville franchise has become a wild, insane hodgepodge of messy no-budget horror movies that are so bad you can’t even sit through them. There are currently over 60 Amityville movies. Yep, sixty. There’s everything from Amityville Bigfoot to Amityville Job Interview, Amityville in Space, and even Amityville Death Toilet. Basically, anytime a crappy horror movie with no money wants to get some views, it throws Amityville in the title to hopefully stir up some interest. But none of these movies actually have anything to do with the Amityville franchise.

In fact, there’s only two real Amityville movies if you want to go by the “true story”. Or, if you want to broaden it to any movie that (very loosely) involves the house, or that tries to use the original storyline as a (very loose) premise, there are nine films. Here’s how to watch them in order.

Amityville Horror Movies in Release Date Order

    • The Amityville Horror (1979)
    • Amityville II: The Possession (1982)
    • Amityville 3-D (1983)
    • Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes (1989)
    • The Amityville Curse (1990)
    • Amityville: A New Generation (1993)
    • The Amityville Horror (2005)
    • The Amityville Haunting (2011)
    • Amityville: The Awakening (2017)

If you want to watch the movies chronologically, there’s actually only two films that matter: the original, and its 1982 prequel. Everything else isn’t actually part of the “true story” and instead focuses on someone being possessed by the “Amityville spirit” or someone finding an old artifact from the house, or someone moving into the home decades later. Here’s the two movies that actually share a timeline.

Amityville Horror Movies in Chronological Order

    Amityville II: The Possession

This sequel is actually a prequel and is the truest of all the movies. The film centers around the DeFeo family who lived at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. One night, their son Ron murdered both his parents, and his four siblings – this is all a true story and actually happened. The film alleges that DeFeo was under the influence of either a demon or the devil himself, a narrative that had been pushed for decades thanks to the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Yep, the couple from The Conjuring).

    The Amityville Horror

One month after DeFeo received his life sentence, the Lutz family moved into the house, claiming to know nothing about the DeFeos or the murders. 28 days later, the family fled from the house, leaving most of their belongings behind – this is also a true story. They said they left the home because they were being tormented by evil spirits. This film focuses on what may have happened during those 28 days.

In The Evil Dead, a group of college kids plan a fun weekend getaway to a secluded old cabin in the woods. But after they arrive and read from the Book of the Dead and play recordings of old incantation spells, they accidentally resurrect a demonic entity who has the power to turn people into zombie-like minions. Since then, the franchise has spawned four sequels, a TV show, and even video games.

    • Army of Darkness (1993)
    • Evil Dead (2013)
    • Ash vs. Evil Dead (2015-2018)
    • Evil Dead Rise (2023)

The Evil Dead in Chronological Order

    The Evil Dead

While the original movie focuses on zombies and raising demons from the dead, it also had a good amount of humor, wit, and campy vibes. The film also helped turn its star Bruce Campbell into a cult hero amongst the horror crowd.

    Evil Dead 2

Arguably even more popular than the original, the sequel sees the return of the zombie-making demons creating what's known in the movie as “Deadites”. In the film, Ash (Campbell) and a group of strangers huddle together in a cabin and fight for survival. Get ready for more guts, more gore, and more comedy.

    Army of Darkness

Taking the franchise to its zaniest place yet, Army of Darkness transports Ash to the Middle Ages and he must fight to return home. But the only way to get back to the present is using the book of the dead (uh-oh…) The movie is absolutely wild and has some totally hilarious one-liners.

    Evil Dead

Most people *think* that the 2013 film Evil Dead is a reboot or remake. But in reality it’s a sequel. The film plays out largely like the original movie – a group in a remote cabin – but a post-credits scene shows Ash, proving that this film is part of the original timeline.

    Ash vs. Evil Dead

This Starz series ran for three seasons and saw Campbell reprise his iconic role as Ash. Throughout the show’s run Ash must once again battle the evil dead and he’s joined by a few surprising coasters, including Samara Weaving and Lucy Lawless (aka Xena the Warrior Princess).

    Evil Dead Rise

More of a standalone film, the movie takes place in a Los Angeles apartment complex where a family accidentally calls upon the evil dead once again. The film has no true connection to the previous movies aside from the fact that the dead are raised using the same book. But in 2023, Campbell said in an interview with Collider that the movie is indeed in the same timeline, technically making it a standalone sequel.

How to Watch Every Predator Movie in Order

Few franchises are as popular as Predator. Since premiering in 1987, the Predator (or, more specifically the Yautja warrior) has spawned his own film franchise, appeared in movies, comics and video games. There's even a popular crossover franchise, Alien vs. Predator. If you want to watch every movie in the the Predator franchise, we've got you covered with this streaming guide. Below you can find out how to watch every Predator movie in release and chronological order.

If you want to watch the Predator movies in release order, you can watch with Predator (1987) before moving on to Predator 2 (1990). The franchise then takes an unexpected turn with Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), before returning to the Yautja's standalone movies again with Predators (2010) The Predator (2018) and Prey (2022). However, Prey takes place chronologically before the events of the original predator movie. So, if you want want to stream the entire Predator franchise in chronological order, this guide is here to help.

    Predator: Killer of Killers

Placing Predator: Killer of Killers on a chronological timeline is difficult because the movie centers on three time periods; the Viking era, feudal Japan, and WWII. The animated movie follows the deadly alien species going up against human warriors from each historic era.

    Prey

Chronologically, the second movie in the series would be Prey, which is set back in 1719. In the film, a young Comanche woman (Amber Midthunder) wants to be a great hunter, but is told she’s not allowed since she’s a woman. But after encountering the Predator in the forest, she must not only become a hunter, but also survive being hunted.

    Predator

Next up is the original movie which is set in the present day (being 1987 at the time). In the film, an elite military team is tasked with an extraction mission in a wartorn Central American country. But escaping rebel forces in the jungle turns out to be the least of their worries once they find themselves stalked by the Predator.

    Predator 2

Taking Predator from the jungle to the city, Predator 2 starred Danny Glover as a Los Angeles detective who is investigating drug cartels. Also, somewhat randomly, the film is set in 1997 instead of 1990 – perhaps to give the movie more of a dystopian future vibe (which…it didn’t). But the cartels soon find that they’re not just warring against each other and the police, but also the Predator.

    Alien vs Predator

This iconic head-to-head movie, which is known to fans as simple 'AVP', was inspired by a crossover comic book from 1989. When Weyland Industries identify a pyramid hidden underneath an island in the Antarctic, the unfortunate team sent to investigate become entangled in an intergalactic war between the Xenomorphs and the Yauja warriors.

Rumors about a connected universe between Xenomorphs and the Yautja began when the skull of the parasitic alien could be seen within the predator's ship in Predator 2. What may have been just an easter egg from the film's visual effects teams (some of whom worked on both franchises) eventually became a blockbuster event that was unprecedented at the time.

The AVP movies are generally considered to be canonical within the Predator franchise but not recognized within the Alien franchise's canon. However, if you want to watch all of the Alien movies in order, it would be a mistake to skip AVP and AVP 2.

    Alien vs Predator 2

AVP 2 continues the ongoing fight between two of cinema's most recognizable alien species. Also known as Aliens vs Predator: Reqiuem, the movie follows a Predator ship that leaves Earth with its captured Xenomorph facehuggers. But it's not long before there's a chestburster aboard the ship – leading to the creation of an alien which has the characteristic traits of both species.

    Predators

This one is highly debated because Predators never actually says when it takes place. However, many fans believe it takes place between the first two movies. In the film, a group of humans awaken on an alien planet and learn that they’re being used for hunting practice by the Predators. Even wilder, the Predator from the first movie (who definitely was blown up in the finale, but oh well...) is somehow there, and alive, and is tied up and being tortured by the other Predators for his failure on Earth. Because of this, many fans think it’s set not long after the first movie. But there are others who believe the film takes place in the future, which begs the question: How long has the Predator been tied up for?????

    The Predator

Another oddity (and, honestly, just a really terrible movie in general) is The Predator. Before the film’s release, director Shane Black claimed in a 2016 interview with HeyUGuys that the movie takes place before 2010’s Predators, but also, and I quote, “Predator 2 has probably happened already…” So the film’s director doesn’t even know where and when the movie takes place. Black also cast his convicted pedophile friend for a small role in the film where he plays a pervert, and the movie has a bizarre subplot about autism. Needless to say, Black hasn’t directed a movie since The Predator and this film can honestly just be skipped.

  • How To Watch 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' In Order

How To Watch 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' In Order

    Keith Langston

    Keith Langston

If you want to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street in order, then I have some great news: both the release date order and chronological order are exactly the same. In an era where that’s becoming increasingly rare in the horror genre, it’s refreshing to watch a franchise with a simple, straightforward timeline. But its timeline is the only simple thing about A Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s one of the most clever, sadistic, and terrifying slasher franchises ever.

By the mid-80s, the slasher genre was losing steam. Halloween (1978) solidified the subgenre and Friday the 13th (1980) offered some decent popcorn fare, but then there were tons of fillers. Yes, there were some moderate successes like Prom Night (1980) and The Funhouse (1981), but there was also a boatload of stinkers like Madman (1981), Final Exam (1981), and Don’t Go Into the Woods (1981).

Just as the genre seemed on its last limb, horror master Wes Craven released A Nightmare on Elm Street. Instead of the slow-moving, silent, masked killer that had become cliché by ‘85, Nightmare gave the world Freddy Krueger, the demented spirit of a quick-witted, irreverent, soulless, remorseless pedophile who seeks revenge on the town that killed him. He’s shocking, perverse, and horrifying, while also being undeniably gripping and entertaining.

Krueger is a horrible person, but a fantastic character. Plus, since he’s able to attack people in their dreams, Nightmare didn’t just repeat the standard knife kills of other slashers. It opened an entire world of horror, macabre, and sometimes, downright wild kills. Whether you’re new to the franchise or a diehard fan looking to rewatch the classics, here’s the entire A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in order and where to find them on HBO Max, Shudder, and more.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The original movie introduced the world to Freddy Krueger. The child rapist and murderer who was killed by the local community. But as he died, he vowed to take revenge by killing their children… in their dreams. The film’s dark, nightmare-fueled boiler room settings and synth-infused soundtrack are truly eerie and unsettling, giving every scene a good dose of horror before anything even happens.

Add to that Freddy’s brutal and bizarre kills, and you’ve got a seriously iconic horror film. This is also the movie that gave us that iconic Johnny Depp death scene! It’s the perfect movie for anyone who loves a legit scare that's got some paranormal undertones, like Smile (2022) and Jeepers Creepers (2001).

    A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)

Initially, this sequel was panned upon its release, but in recent decades, the film has seen a newfound appreciation, especially in the LGBTQ community. The movie’s screenwriter, director, and star were all gay, and the movie is absolutely loaded with homoeroticism. While it might not be the scariest Nightmare movie, Freddy’s Revenge honestly deserves a watch for its wild and almost unbelievable backstory. In fact, the film even has an award-winning documentary, Scream Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, chronicling all the wild behind-the-scenes drama, its secret queer influences, and the lasting impact it had on its lead actor, Mark Patton.

Timeline wise, the movie is technically set five years after the first film. This creates some tricky questions about when exactly the first and second movies take place, since they’re both clearly set in the present day but allegedly take place five years apart. The good news is that Freddy’s Revenge is pretty standalone so, unlike the later films, its official date doesn’t really mean much. Freddy’s Revenge is a must-watch for anyone who loves a horror movie with a wild backstory, like 1988’s Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (aka FriGay the 13th) or The Omen (1976).

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors picks up after the first two movies and has some of the wildest kills in the Nightmare franchise, which has made it into a fan favorite. From Freddy turning into a giant, intestine-looking snake and eating a girl to Freddy popping out of a TV and delivering the iconic line “Welcome to prime time, b**ch,” before shoving his victim into the television, Dream Warriors is a wild must-watch.

It’s also notable for bringing back the original film’s star, Heather Langenkamp, and for serving as a launching point for future Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette. Thanks to its charismatic killer and seriously wild kills, there’s still no movie out there that’s quite like Dream Warriors.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master continues the story of the survivors from Dream Warriors, now released from the institution and living normal lives. Naturally, Freddy returns once again to finish the job. The movie received a few mixed reviews, but it was relatively well-received and seen as a solid continuation of the Dream Warriors storyline.

Definitely check out The Dream Master if you love horror films with continuing storylines that carry over in their sequels, like Scream (1996) or Halloween.

A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989)

Picking up a year after The Dream Master, in A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child, it’s alluded that Freddy wants to come back by being reincarnated as the unborn child of one of his victims from the fourth film. While the movie has some wild and brutal kills, the film is ultimately a dud, with many saying the franchise jumped the shark thanks to its bizarre plot about Freddy living inside the mind of an unborn child that he can then use as a conduit to start infecting the dreams of his victims again (huh???).

Overall, The Dream Child really requires some suspension of disbelief, but it could be a great film for anyone who enjoys the pregnancy horror subgenre like Push (2009) or False Positive (2021).

Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)

Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare was the film that finally killed the franchise. Thanks to its incredibly unscary kills and horrific plot that tried to explain Freddy’s existence (It’s thanks to “dream demons.”), the movie was a tragically dull ending to a great slasher franchise. Its chronology is even messier, being set “10 years from now,” so assumingly in 2001. Why it needed to be set in the near-future is anyone’s guess, but luckily being set in 2001 didn’t upset the chronological order since Freddy vs. Jason wasn’t released until 2003.

However, there is absolutely a niche audience out there who loves the tragically bizarre later entries to slasher franchises (They are always so uniquely weird!), like Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) and Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996). If you’re one of those fans, then this is the hidden gem for you.

    Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994)

With The Final Nightmare officially ending the franchise, Craven found a unique way to bring back Freddy. New Nightmare is an ultra-meta movie that stars Heather Langenkamp (the star of the original movie) as herself. Known as “the actress from A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Heather navigates life as an actress and a Scream Queen in Hollywood.

But everything changes one night when she starts having real nightmares about Freddy, which brings him into the real world. New Nightmare is so interesting because it’s a Nightmare film set entirely out of the chronological timeline in the “real world.” It’s an excellent choice for fans of super meta, self-aware horror movies like The Cabin in the Woods (2011) or Scream 3 (2000).

    Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Hot take: This is actually my second favorite Nightmare movie and my #1 favorite Jason movie. Freddy vs. Jason is so darn good and so much fun. In the film, Freddy resurrects Jason to scare people, which will help fuel nightmares that he can infect. But like a wild animal, once Jason gets going, he can't stop, so Freddy needs to stop him himself. The start of the film also references the previous Nightmare movies, officially placing it within the canon.

Watching two horror titans battle it out for the first time in modern cinema history is beyond cool, and every horror fan needs to watch Freddy vs. Jason at least once. It’s got similar vibes to Alien vs. Predator (2004) and the old-school monster mashups like King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). Just trust me, watch it, you won't be disappointed.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

In 2010, Samuel Bayer tried to reboot the Nightmare franchise with the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake… but trying to remake a movie that’s already a classic isn’t easy (as this film learned the hard way). With terrible reviews and a very “meh” box office performance, this remains the latest Nightmare movie to date. It essentially just repeats the original plot, and honestly, that’s all there is to say about it.

However, if you’re someone who loved the Michael Bay 2000s remakes of classic horror movies, like The Hitcher (2007) or The Amityville Horror (2005), then this might be the film for you.

Smile became a breakout hit back in 2022. The film earned more than $217 million at the box office and was one of the scariest movies of the year. If you’re a fan of Smile or its 2024 sequel Smile 2, check out our guide below to discover more great movies you’ll enjoy and find out where they’re streaming online.

First up, all Smile fans need to check out It Follows. In Smile, an unseen entity follows its victims for days, appearing as eerie, smiling people, before it kills them. The entity then passes on from person to another after their death. The plot of It Follows is incredibly similar. In the movie, the evil spirit is passed on through sex, whereas in Smile it seems to prey on people with trauma. But this STD-spread haunting movie preys on people’s fear of not just evil, but sexual health as well, making it a disturbingly hard-hitting horror movie.

Another closely related film is The Ring. In Smile, it’s revealed that nobody survives the haunting after one week, as the entity’s abuse gets stronger and stronger. Anyone who has ever seen The Ring will immediately recognize the similarity since the line “seven days” became infamous when Rachel (Naomi Watts) gets a phone call after watching the cursed video tape. It’s the original “followed by a cursed demon” horror movie and to this day it still holds up. The Ring received two sequels – The Ring Two and Rings.

Another similar film is The Grudge. While the movie doesn’t have the countdown aspect of the other two, it still centers around a curse that eventually kills its victims, remaining there until someone finds the body. Then, the curse attaches itself to its new victim, starting the process over again. Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the movie was a massive hit and, like The Ring, it has spawned two theatrically-released sequels – The Grudge 2 and The Grudge (and one straight-to-video sequel).

10 Movies and TV Shows To Watch if You Liked Joker: Folie à Deux (and Where to Stream Them)

    Rachel Ulatowski

Joker: Folie à Deux is the long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed Joker. The film sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix as the nihilistic criminal Arthur Fleck (a.k.a. Joker), but this time, he is joined by his iconic love interest Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga).

Elevated by its musical components and Lady Gaga’s acting and vocal prowess, Joker: Folie à Deux is another unique and searing social commentary. If you enjoyed Joker: Folie à Deux, use our guide to find 10 similar great TV shows and movies you can stream online today on platforms like Max, Netflix, Prime Video, and more.

    Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad follows Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a family man who is already financially struggling when he learns he has terminal cancer. Feeling he has no other option, he turns to a life of crime to ensure his family will be taken care of after his death and slowly transforms into a brutal drug lord. Breaking Bad is one of the most critically acclaimed shows of all time and parallels Joker: Folie à Deux with a tale of a man-turned-criminal who poignantly reflects society.

    Falling Down

Falling Down is a psychological thriller about William Foster's (Michael Douglas) trek across Los Angeles to attend his daughter’s birthday party. His trek slowly turns into a rampage as he begins reacting with increasing violence to everyone he encounters while becoming more disillusioned by social inequality. It’s a bit more ambiguous and darkly comedic than Joker: Folie à Deux, but both movies track long-suffering men seeking vengeance against society.

    Gotham

Gotham follows Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), whose investigation into the murder of Bruce Wayne’s (David Mazouz) parents pits him against some of the city’s most iconic villains. The show also follows Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) and Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) throughout their slow transformations into Harley Quinn and Joker-esque villains. Dark, violent, and gritty, Gotham boasts a similar tone to Joker: Folie à Deux and delves deep into concepts of corruption, vengeance, and mental illness.

    Joker

One can’t get closer to Joker: Folie à Deux than its predecessor, Joker. The film tracks the origin story of Fleck, a failed comedian who begins descending into madness due to society’s continuous rejection of him. While Joker: Folie à Deux delves deeper into its nihilistic protagonist and social commentary, Joker provides the riveting backstory of how society molded the man viewers see in the sequel.

    Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is a neo-noir thriller that follows the petty thief Louis “Lou” Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he discovers the lucrative world of crime journalism. In his desperation to capture the most sensational crime photos and videos, he begins interfering with each crime scene. Like Joker: Folie à Deux, Nightcrawler delves into the effects of unemployment and poverty while exploring additional themes about consumer culture and the ethics of photojournalism.

    Taxi Driver

Taxi Driver follows Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), a New York City taxi driver who works the night shift to deal with his insomnia and loneliness. During his drives, he becomes disillusioned with the state of the city and begins forming a radical plot to save the world. Taxi Driver is believed to have heavily influenced the Joker with its dark character study and reflects Joker: Folie à Deux with its exploration of whether its protagonist is a villain or a heroic vigilante.

    The Batman

The Batman tackles many of the same themes as Joker but is told from the hero's perspective instead of the villain’s. It follows Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), who races to stop the Riddler’s (Paul Dano) attacks on Gotham’s elite while delving into his own family’s corrupt history. Similar to Joker: Folie à Deux, The Batman examines classism and social inequality and features a complicated villain who violently attempts to right the wrongs of society.

    The King of Comedy

The King of Comedy is a black comedy about Rupert Pupkin (De Niro), a failed comedian who becomes obsessed with comedian and talk show host Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis). As his obsession grows, he forms a plot to kidnap Langford and force him to invite him on his show. The King of Comedy plays out a bit more like a horror story than Joker: Folie à Deux, but both movies are dark and ambitious explorations of failed comedians who will do anything to fulfill their fantasies of fame.

    The Penguin

Like Joker: Folie à Deux, The Penguin is a character study and unique social commentary focusing on an iconic Batman villain. The crime drama follows Oswald Cobb (Colin Farrell) in his bid to become Gotham's new crime kingpin. Dark, gritty, and told from the villains’ perspective, The Penguin and Joker: Folie à Deux offer refreshing takes on the Batman universe while delving into concepts of classism and discrimination.

    V for Vendetta

V for Vendetta is a political thriller set in a dystopian future where the UK has come under the control of a fascist totalitarian regime. V (Hugo Weaving), a masked vigilante, takes it upon himself to utilize terrorist methods to fight the oppressive regime. V for Vendetta gets more political than Joker: Folie à Deux with its exploration of an authoritarian government, but both examine similar themes of revenge and oppression.

  • How To Watch 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' In Order

How To Watch 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' In Order

    Keith Langston

    Keith Langston

    JustWatch Editor

Since premiering in 1974, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has become one of the most iconic (and sloppiest) franchises in horror history. The series centers around a chainsaw-wielding killer known as Leatherface, who butchers his victims like animals in the rural fields of Texas. If you want to watch the franchise in order, then good luck because the chronology of Texas Chainsaw is messier, sloppier, and more disemboweled than even the most unfortunate Leatherface victim. In fact, there are four (yes, four!) timelines in the Texas Chainsaw universe. If you’re a diehard fan who is seriously wanting to watch all four in order, it would look like this:

    Original Texas Chainsaw Timeline

    • The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
    • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
    • Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
    • Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995)

    2003 Remake Timeline

    • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
    • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

    2013 Reboot Timeline

    • Leatherface (2017)
    • The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
    • Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

    2022 Timeline

    • The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
    • Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

But in all honesty, the timelines are so fractured and incoherent that, in my opinion as a huge fan, they aren’t even worth it. The true order you should watch Texas Chainsaw in is the release order. The real joy (and madness) of the franchise is watching how it evolved over the years, spanning the gauntlet, from truly terrifying and smart to meta and absolutely bonkers to scary again.

It’s also interesting to see how all the films built upon each other as time went on, learning from previous mistakes (and often repeating a few of them) and, ultimately, creating another core entry in the horror canon. Here’s every Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie in release date order, which, trust me, is the best and most logical order to watch the franchise in. Find all the movies across platforms like Netflix, Peacock, Tubi, and more.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

What happens when a group of friends driving through the rural emptiness of Texas find themselves running out of gas? Well, you’ll have to watch and find out. But let’s just say it involves a cannibalistic family of psychopaths, meat hooks, mallets, and one giant, hulking, chainsaw-wielding killer who wears masks made of human skin.

If you’re squeamish, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre probably isn’t the movie for you. But if you’re someone who loves gritty, ultra-realistic horror that’s raw, unsettling, and macabre… then this is the film to top all others. It’s great for fans of slasher movies like Halloween, since The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is considered one of the first true slashers; and it’s perfect for fans of old-school horror movies, like Cannibal Holocaust, that have that gritty, grimy, grindhouse feel.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

Instantly proving that TCM’s chronological order means nothing is the very first sequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Set in the then-present day (1986), the film follows a radio DJ and a sheriff, who happens to be the uncle of two characters from the first movie. And, of course, Leatherface and the rest of the Sawyer clan get up to their no-good hijinks once again, this time in Dallas.

The sequel is truly wild. Leatherface lives in an underground lair beneath an abandoned theme park. Not to mention, the film makes multiple pop culture references and even pokes fun at the original movie. If you love the meta wit from Scream, or the trashy bombast of Rob Zombie films like House of the 1,000 Corpses, this is the zany, offbeat TCM entry for you. No real knowledge of the first movie necessary.

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)

The first thing you need to know about Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is that it got completely gutted in the editing room. There’s a whole backstory to the movie involving the MPA, which was so offended by the film that they initially refused to give Leatherface a rating.

Then it was rated X numerous times, and finally, after being submitted to the MPA 11 times and missing its initial release date because of it, the film finally got released with an R-rating. The problem is that to get an R-rating, the entire movie had to essentially be scrapped, and the end result is dull, tepid, boring, and hardly horror. Unless you’re a true horror fanatic or franchise completionist, you can skip Leatherface without losing track of the plot and family tree established in the first two movies.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995)

Continuing the franchise’s ridiculous journey is 1995’s The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you’ve never heard of that movie before, that’s because after a very limited release in ‘95, the movie didn’t actually premiere until 1997 after receiving heavy edits that most critics say were for the worse. The film was also released under its new title, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation.

Starring Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey, the fourth entry in the franchise is super meta and obscure, almost bordering on arthouse cinema. It mocks how terrible and senseless the horror genre had become in the ‘90s by purposefully making itself terrible and senseless. It’s like if John Waters made a horror movie. The movie even includes a bizarre secret society subplot and explores more of Leatherface’s gender identity (which, at the time, seemed edgy but now just feels transphobic). It’s a really smart movie… if you can manage to sit through its 95-minute runtime of super meta horror commentary. The Next Generation is a great choice for anyone who loves other super meta horror films like New Nightmare or Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

A personal favorite of mine is the 2003The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot starring Jessica Biel. Unlike the original, which has a super amateur vibe that almost feels like lost footage from a snuff film, the ‘03 remake tackles the story with a huge budget, big stars, and even Michael Bay serving as producer.

The result is a TCM entry that has excellent cinematography, a true soundtrack, a deeper story, and more suspense. It’s also really interesting to watch because it shows how different filmmaking styles can have such radical impacts on the same story. If you’re a fan of Bay’s other augties reboots like The Amityville Horror (2005) or Friday the 13th (2009), this is a must-watch.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)

After the ‘03 reboot scored big at the box office, earning over $107 million, a sequel was soon put in development. Except, it wasn’t a sequel. It was a prequel that dove into Leatherface’s origin story and tried to explain why the Sawyer family (who have been switched to the Hewitt family in the Bay movies) are the cannibals they are. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning was the first attempt to really create a reason and origin for the franchise.

It’s not bad, but it isn’t great. However, The Beginning succeeds at what it sets out to do, and for horror fans, it absolutely is worth watching. Definitely check it out if you love prequels, especially horror prequels like Exorcist: The Beginning (2004) or The First Purge (2018).

    Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

Retconning the franchise and claiming itself to be a sequel to the original movie, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw 3D is wonky from the start. It focuses on Leatherface’s cousin, who was allegedly born in 1973 just before the events of the first movie. While she should have been 40 years old in 2013, she instead is a young college graduate (played by Alexandra Daddario), and it’s just a wild ride from there. Leatherface is locked in a basement like an animal, Daddario delivers the now-iconic “Do your thing, cuz!” line, and the plot includes Leatherface trying to kill her the entire movie until he discovers she’s his baby cousin and then suddenly the two are total besties (aww, cute!)

Texas Chainsaw 3D is a spectacle. Not always in a good way, but whether you’re laughing with the movie or at it, it’s a fun ride for franchise fans and anyone who wants to open a bottle of wine and cackle the night away with a group of friends.

    Leatherface (2017)

Sadly, there’s another entry in the Texas Chainsaw franchise that, unless you’re a super diehard fan, can easily be skipped. And to respect your time and sanity, frankly, it should be skipped. Leatherface decided to retcon the origin story established in The Beginning and create its own prequel showing the origins of Leatherface. It involves the crazed, murderous Sawyer family; a bunch of ruthless, murderous escaped mental patients; and a bunch of soulless, murderous sheriffs.

It’s a lot of bad people doing bad things to each other. None of it feels like Texas Chainsaw at all, and it’s got so much murder that it loses all its suspense and horror. There’s a reason why this movie was shelved for over a year, lost its theatrical release, and became a straight-to-VOD slopfest that most people don’t even know exists. However, if you’re the kind of person who loves an obscure deep cut, this one’s for you.

    Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

In 2022, Netflix retconned the Texas Chainsaw franchise yet again, this time making a present-day sequel that only counts the original film in its chronology. Okay, first the bad part. Using this timeline, Leatherface must have been at least 25 years old in the original movie, which would make him about 75 (if not older) in 2022. So the idea that a geriatric Leatherface is still rampaging down hordes of young twentysomethings is beyond stupid.

However, if you can ignore the blatant plot hole, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is actually kind of good. It’s certainly the best TCM movie of the last decade and has some wild and fun kills. Honestly, it almost feels more like a reboot than a sequel. It’s kind of its own beast, similar to how Wrong Turn and The Strangers: Chapter 1 revamped their decades-old franchises. So you can easily watch it as a standalone movie.

10 Great Movies and TV Shows To Watch if You Love The Penguin (and Where to Stream Them)

    Rachel Ulatowski

    Rachel Ulatowski

The Penguin recently premiered on HBO and has impressed critics and audiences with its unique blend of the superhero and gangster drama genres. Inspired by DC Comics, the series follows Oswald Cobb (Colin Farrell) as he strives to become the successor to Gotham’s former crime kingpin.

So far, The Penguin has earned stellar reviews for its dark tone, gritty premise, and deep dive into the psychology of one of DC’s most iconic villains. Viewers enjoying The Penguin can use our guide to find similar TV shows and movies to stream online now on platforms like Max, Netflix, Disney+, and more.

    Arrow

Based on DC Comics’ Green Arrow comics, Arrow follows Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), a billionaire playboy who disappears at sea with his father one day. Five years later, he returns as a changed man, becoming a vigilante to clean out the crime that has encroached on his city and business in his absence. Arrow boasts grit and a serious tone, though it does lean more into the superhero genre than the crime genre and is a less intense and violent alternative to The Penguin.

    Daredevil

Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, Daredevil follows Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer who begins leading a double life as a vigilante to fight the crime kingpin Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). The series is delightfully dark, gritty, and action-packed, delving into complex themes of morality, justice, and religion while offering a mesmerizing and chilling villain in D’Onofrio’s Fisk. Daredevil parallels The Penguin with its exceptional quality, character studies, and iconic lead villain.

    Gotham

As its title suggests, Gotham is set in the same city as The Penguin, although in a different universe/timeline. The series follows James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as a rookie detective whose investigation into the murder of Bruce Wayne’s (David Mazouz) parents brings him face-to-face with Gotham’s most dangerous criminals. Both The Penguin and Gotham offer a gritty dive into corruption and crime, but Gotham does so from the perspective of an iconic hero rather than an iconic villain.

    Joker

Loosely based on the DC character of the same name, Joker follows Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disillusioned by poverty, abuse, and discrimination who begins descending into madness. The film is a riveting character study and a refreshing take on the iconic Batman villain that is elevated by its social commentary. Joker boasts a similar tone to The Penguin and tackles many of the same themes, especially since they both examine villains with disabilities who have experienced poverty and discrimination.

    Pennyworth

Pennyworth is a prequel to Gotham and V for Vendetta that follows a young Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), who opens a security firm and catches the attention of the wealthy Wayne family. The series is more a spy thriller than a crime drama, but it offers the same gritty, mature tone as The Penguin, top-notch performances, intriguing social commentary, and a unique spin on Batman lore.

    Scarface

Scarface is a crime drama that follows Tony Montana (Al Pacino), a Cuban refugee who arrives in America penniless but, believing he’s meant for something more, begins moving up in the criminal underworld to become a fearsome drug lord. Over the years, the film has become a cult classic, earning praise as a gangster epic offering a mesmerizing Pacino performance and an intriguing deep dive into morality. Meanwhile, Montana strongly parallels the Penguin as a villain who came from very little but never stopped believing he was destined for something bigger.

    The Batman

The Batman is a must-watch for The Penguin fans, considering it debuts Farrell’s Penguin and kickstarts Matt Reeves’ Batverse. The film sees Batman (Robert Pattinson) investigating a string of grisly deaths in Gotham while struggling with his family’s past and whether the corrupt Gotham deserves saving. It plays out more like a film noir than a superhero movie with a dark and brooding tone and gorgeous cinematography, making it the perfect preface to the world of The Penguin.

    The Godfather

The Godfather and its sequels are like The Penguin but without the superhero elements. The original is considered one of the greatest gangster dramas ever made, following the larger-than-life Corleone family as the young Michael Corleone (Pacino) joins the family business and begins his transformation into a mafia boss. The Godfather’s influence on The Penguin is evident with its Vito Corleone-esque main villain, exploration of crime families, and the story of a man’s descent deeper and deeper into the criminal underworld.

    The Sopranos

While The Penguin appears to have drawn inspiration from numerous iconic crime bosses, Farrell seems to channel Tony Soprano the most. The Sopranos follows Tony (James Gandolfini), a mob boss who struggles to balance his criminal lifestyle and family life. Both The Penguin and The Sopranos are told from the villain’s POV and, in doing so, humanize the villains, adding numerous layers of complexity by painting them simultaneously as the villain, hero, and victim of the story.

    The Untouchables

The Untouchables tells the true story of Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner), a Prohibition agent who formed a law enforcement team dubbed The Untouchables to take down crime boss Al Capone (Robert de Niro). The movie received high critical acclaim, including four Academy Award nominations, for its performances and thrilling premise. The Untouchables is an excellent alternative for viewers looking for a more realistic and slightly less bleak look at crime than The Penguin.

Lady Gaga recently became the second actress in history to bring the iconic DC antihero Harley Quinn to life in a live-action film. The singer-songwriter and actress was tapped to star alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in Joker: Folie à Deux. Meanwhile, the film isn’t the first time she has mixed her singing capabilities with her acting versatility. Check out our guide to find out where to watch Lady Gaga’s eight best movies and TV shows.

Lady Gaga’s breakthrough into the film industry came with her starring role in A Star Is Born, which easily marks the best performance of her career. The film follows Ally (Lady Gaga), a waitress whose life changes when she is discovered by country musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper). Impressed by her talent, he invites her to tour with him. Their relationship quickly turns romantic but is complicated by Maine’s alcoholism.

A Star Is Born has been hailed as one of the best iterations of the movie, largely because of Lady Gaga’s acclaimed performance and electric chemistry with Cooper. Although the film solidified her capability as a leading lady, at the time of its release, she had already made an impression on the small screen through American Horror Story. Gaga starred in season 5, American Horror Story: Hotel, and season 6, American Horror Story: Roanoke.

In season 5 of the horror series, she portrayed The Countess, the owner of a haunted hotel who hides a dark secret behind her cultured, affluent status. For her performance, Lady Gaga won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries. She went on to guest star in season 6 as the frightening witch Scáthach.

Meanwhile, although House of Gucci received mixed reviews from critics, Lady Gaga still offered an award-winning performance. She stars alongside Adam Driver and Jared Leto as Patrizia Reggiani, a young woman who marries into the wealthy Gucci family and becomes entangled in family drama and corruption. The biographical movie was criticized for its pacing and tone, but praise for Lady Gaga’s performance as the fiery and ambitious Reggiani was nearly unanimous.

At times, Lady Gaga has also combined her filmography skills with her music career, directing and producing the well-received concert film Gaga Chromatica Ball and the powerful, personal documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two.

How To Watch Every 'Halloween' Movie In Order (All Four Chronologies, Explained)

Halloween is one of the most iconic horror franchises in cinema history. Centered around the masked killer Michael Myers (also known as “the Shape”), the series follows his relentless urge to kill. But Halloween is also a very weird franchise. It has numerous chronologies, multiple films where star Jamie Lee Curtis doesn’t return, a short-lived reboot timeline, and then everything came full circle with Curtis reprising her role for a new trilogy in 2018 that retconned everything except the first movie. Take a breath and let that all sink in. Here are all the various timelines in the Halloween franchise.

    Original Timeline

    • Halloween (1978)
    • Halloween II (1981)
    • Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
    • Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
    • Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

    H20 Timeline

    • Halloween (1978)
    • Halloween II (1981)
    • Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
    • Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

    Blumhouse Timeline

    • Halloween (1978)
    • Halloween (2018)
    • Halloween Kills (2021)
    • Halloween Ends (2022)

    Rob Zombie Timeline

    • Halloween (2007)
    • Halloween 2 (2009)

Notice how none of the timelines include Halloween III? That’s because it’s an unrelated anthology film that wasn’t well-received… but we’ll get more into that later. First, we need to chat about the best way to watch the Halloween franchise in order. Since the timelines are all over the place, the most enjoyable way to watch Halloween is in release date order.

It’s honestly the most organic way since it’s how the franchise evolved naturally over time. This way, you can view the movies as cinematic artifacts that build upon each other. Plus, with so much retconning, it’s the only true way the franchise continued on throughout the decades. Read on to discover all the Halloween movies in their proper release date order and where to find them on Shudder, Apple TV+, and more.

    Halloween (1978)

The original film begins with a young Michael Myers killing his older sister, who is babysitting him on Halloween night. Flashforward 15 years, and now a grown Michael escapes a mental institution and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, to prey upon teenage babysitters once again, with his prime target being Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis).

Halloween is a masterclass in horror thanks to its perfect pacing, terrifying masked killer, and its excellent setting. (A horror movie taking place on Halloween is perfect!) If you like to be scared, this is a must-watch. It’s also great for anyone who wants to see one of the most seminal horror films ever, which helped usher in movies like Friday the 13th (1980) and Scream (1996).

    Halloween II (1981)

Picking up immediately where the first film left off, Halloween II follows Laurie to the hospital as she recovers from her injuries after battling Michael. Unfortunately, Michael also finds his way to the hospital and starts killing everyone in sight. Plus, the movie also drops a bombshell revelation: Laurie is actually Michael’s younger sister.

It’s a polarizing film that sets the franchise up for some of the later movies, which continue to receive mixed reviews from fans and critics to this day. But Halloween II also has some great kills and is starting to gain more appreciation from the fanbase because, while it will never compare to the original, it’s actually a pretty solid film. Watch it if you’re a fan of gritty ‘80s slasher movies like Prom Night (1980) or My Bloody Valentine (1981).

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

For some reason, a group of studio execs thought it would be great to turn Halloween into an anthology series and completely ditch Michael Myers in Halloween III. What they came up with: An evil corporation makes masks that kill people. Watch it if you want, but it has no continuity with the other films and, honestly, isn’t that great.

In the 2010s, the movie saw a bit of a revival thanks to hipsters praising it simply because it was different… but once the novelty wore off of hipsters trying to bore you with their newfound horror knowledge, the movie dipped back into the annals of horror history. However, there are some critics who note Halloween III’s underlying social commentary, so if you enjoy movies like The Lobster (2015) that subtly call out societal issues, maybe check it out.

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

After the disastrous release of Halloween III, audiences finally got to see Michael Myers again. In the fourth film, it’s revealed that Laurie has died (shock!), but had a daughter (even more shocking!) named Jamie Lloyd (played by alt horror icon Danielle Harris). Naturally, Michael now has his eyes set on her. The movie also has a shocking finale that I won’t spoil.

Halloween 4 was met with mixed reviews, and really, it’s the type of movie where you know what you’re signing up for. Do you like the slow-moving Michael terrorizing young women on Halloween? If so, you should watch it. It’s not reinventing the wheel or anything, but it’s an ‘80s slasher that delivers what ‘80s slashers promise.

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

In the fifth film, Michael continues stalking Jamie, once again killing everyone around her. The film was panned by critics and is seen as a completely repetitive copy of the fourth movie (which it most certainly is). However, it too has a shocking finale… one that introduces the most polarizing plot point in the Halloween franchise: The Cult of Thorn.

Honestly, the main reason to watch Halloween 5 is the ending. Whether you love it or hate it (and most of us hate it), it’s a watershed moment for the Halloween franchise, where one of the most renowned slasher series went wildly off the rails, leading to the epic disaster that is its sequel.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

Leaning fully into the new cult plot, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers turned Michael into a puppet used by a nefarious cult… and, honestly, it’s not a good movie. Unless you’re a diehard fan determined to watch every film in the franchise (or are just a massive Paul Rudd fanatic), feel free to skip this one. Like, for real.

However, if you’re a fan of horror sequels that totally jump the shark, like when Pinhead goes to space in Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) or when everyone’s favorite Leprechaun ventures Back 2 tha Hood (2003), then this might just be the movie for you.

    Halloween H20 (1998)

After Scream reinvigorated the slasher genre in 1996, Halloween returned a few years later with Halloween: H20—this time bringing the franchise into the modern age of horror with a new, popular young cast and the return of legacy character Laurie Strode. She’s now teaching at a remote California prep school and, as you can assume, Michael finds her and all hell breaks loose.

Halloween H20 brings back the sibling plotline introduced in Halloween II and is a really fun horror movie for anyone who is a fan of the ‘90s slasher era. If you love the vibe of ‘90s teen horror movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), or Urban Legend(1998), you’ll absolutely enjoy H20.

    Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

Another truly awful entry in the franchise is Halloween: Resurrection. At the start of the film, they kill off Laurie Strode (again), and then it focuses on a reality show filming inside Michael’s “haunted house.” Of course, he’s still living in it, and everyone gets killed (and, honestly, with this cast, thank God).

Resurrection is a sleazy, lazy, and boring sequel that killed off the franchise, opening the door for a reboot. It’s best for the diehard completionists who want to say they’ve watched every Halloween movie. And even then, you’ll probably be on your phone half the time, even though Busta Rhymes is pretty hilarious in it.

    Halloween (2007)

With Resurrection killing off the franchise, Rob Zombie was free to completely reboot the series in 2007. In Zombie’s trademark style, the new film is raw, gory, edgy, and brutal. It also dives deeper into Michael’s childhood, exploring how he became the mask-wearing monster audiences know so well. The movie was a surprise hit, grossing over $80 million and proving that Michael Myers could still attract audiences to theaters.

It’s a controversial take, but I actually think Zombie’s Halloween (2007) has a lot of redeeming qualities, and his ultra-violent style works well for the franchise. If you’re a fan of Zombie’s other movies, like The Devil’s Rejects (2005), or other aughties reboots like 2009’s Friday the 13th, give this one a shot.

    Halloween 2 (2009)

After the success of the first film, Zombie turned a good thing bad with his sequel, Halloween II (2009). It picks up right after his first movie, delivering a story that is sloppy, dull, all over the place, and involves ghosts, mystical visions, and tons of terrible acting. It was a box office bomb, and once again, killed off the Halloween franchise for almost a decade.

Just like Resurrection, it’s hard to recommend this movie for anyone other than a completionist.  With a 35 on Metacritic, a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 4.8 on IMDb, virtually everyone agrees: This is a film you can skip.

    Halloween (2018)

Jamie Lee Curtis returned for 2018’s Halloween as Laurie Strode, and horror fans rejoiced at the original Scream Queen’s proper homecoming. The new film retcons everything except the original movie, taking away the sibling plot and trying to return the Halloween franchise to its terrifying roots.

Strode is now a grandmother and riddled with trauma from her past experience. But it turns out that it’s all for the best because Michael finds her once again… and her years of waiting have trained her well for this moment. If you love legacy sequels, or “requels,” like 2022’s Scream or 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, you’ll love how Blumhouse brought new life into the Halloween franchise.

    Halloween Kills (2021)

America’s politics heavily influenced Halloween Kills when it was released in 2021. The film shows the town of Haddonfield turn on each other instead of going against Michael, which allows him to embark on an epic bloodbath in the finale, giving the Halloween franchise its highest body count ever.

There truly aren't many horror movies out there like Halloween Kills because it is so deeply rooted in American politics. Sure, Michael Myers is the killer, but the film spends most of its time focusing on the townspeople and how their stupidity and hatred are just as deadly. It was really unique to see a renowned slasher franchise like Halloween start asking big questions. It’s a great choice for anyone who likes politically loaded horror films like The Purge (2013).

    Halloween Ends (2022)

Like Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends also has a larger message, and the film sees Haddonfield unfairly accuse a young man of murder. They ostracize him, mock him, and ruin his life. His bitterness and anger lead him down the path of darkness. He then meets Michael Myers in the sewers, and the duo go on a somewhat contentious murder spree. It’s an odd conclusion to the franchise that left fans divided.

But it’s also one of the few horror movies out there with a dual-killer plot, and one of the very, very few where the two killers aren’t accomplices. It’s sort of like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) and “Pick Me Up” from Masters of Horror. Halloween Ends is a great choice for anyone who wants a nontraditional slasher movie.

After his stunning transformation into the iconic Batman villain, the Penguin, in The Batman, Colin Farrell is set to reprise the role in the spinoff series The Penguin. Viewers intrigued by his role as the mobster and channeling of Tony Soprano may be interested in his other acclaimed performances.

Check out our guide for the best movies and TV shows featuring Colin Farrell that you can stream today on platforms like Max, Hulu, and Disney+.

In 2022, Colin Farrell became one of four actors, alongside Robert Lord Taylor, Danny DeVito, and Burgess Meredith, to portray Oswald Cobblepot (a.k.a. The Penguin) in live-action. He starred opposite Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ Batman movie. Farrell is nearly unrecognizable as the scarred, balding villain who lurks in the background, waiting for his opening to become Gotham’s Kingpin. He has been hailed as one of the best iterations of the character and is set to return for The Penguin and The Batman Part II.

Although the Penguin is one of his most recognizable roles, Farrell most frequently thrives in movies with a touch of absurdism and black comedy, such as The Banshees of Inisherin. Farrell took home his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role as the naive but kind-hearted Pádraic Súilleabháin, who is perplexed when his lifelong friend, Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson), breaks off their friendship to devote his life to music. The humorous and surprisingly morbid tale of a broken friendship and loneliness earned 9 Oscar nominations.

Colin Farrell’s adeptness at black comedy has suited him well for Yorgos Lanthimos’ movies, which embody the Greek Weird Wave movement. He starred in Lanthimos’ The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. In the former, he shines once again as a lonely man, David, who must find a partner lest he be turned into a lobster. Its wildly ambitious and ambiguous premise and the performance of Farrell, Olivia Colman, and Ben Winshaw make The Lobster one of Lanthimos’ most memorable films. Farrell also led the critically acclaimed The Killing of a Secret Deer as Steven Murphy, a doctor whose family is terrorized by a teenage boy, Martin (Barry Keoghan).

Colin Farrell’s versatility means that he can seamlessly transition between ambitious absurdist and indie films and blockbusters and comedies. He played a prominent role in Guy Ritchie’s gangster film The Gentlemen and appeared as the Auror Percival Graves in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, two movies that became successful franchises. Like most actors, he also has a few hidden gems to his filmography, such as the biographical drama Thirteen Lives, which captures the Tham Luang Nang Non cave rescue, and Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Minority Report.

One Piece is hailed as one of the greatest anime series ever made and recently experienced a further rise in popularity when it successfully transitioned to live-action.

The show sets itself apart from other anime titles with its swashbuckling adventures, iconic characters like Monkey D. Luffy, and extensive worldbuilding.

While waiting for season two of the live-action One Piece and preparing for the anime to start winding down, use our guide to find ten great shows like One Piece you can watch online now on platforms like Crunchyroll, Netflix, Max, and more.

    Avatar: The Last Airbender

Viewers intrigued by One Piece’s meticulous worldbuilding and superhuman powers will love Avatar: The Last Airbender. The animated series takes place in a world where individuals are born with the power to bend the elements of water, earth, air, and fire, but only the Avatar can bend all four and maintain balance in the kingdom. Like One Piece, it features lovable characters and an intricately designed world, although it focuses more on mature themes like imperialism rather than pure adventure.

    Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop is an adventurous anime with endearing characters. It follows Jet Black, Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, Edward, and Ein, a team of bounty hunters who attempt to maintain order in a futuristic world where humans have colonized the solar system. The anime series is similar to One Piece in that it’s a one-of-kind, genre-bending anime with outstanding characterization.

    Dragon Ball

The original Dragon Ball series boasts the same lighthearted, adventurous tone, passionate lead character, and epic battles as One Piece. While One Piece follows Luffy’s adventure to find the One Piece treasure, Dragon Ball follows the pure-hearted and determined Goku on his quest to find the seven Dragon Balls, which can summon a wish-granting dragon.

    Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is a well-crafted anime series that has earned high praise for its animation, voice performances, storytelling, and soundtrack. The series follows Gon Freecss, a young boy who learns the father who abandoned him is an elite “Hunter” and sets out to find him and follow in his footsteps. Like One Piece, it’s a high-quality adventure anime with an upbeat tone and a thought-provoking story.

    Naruto

Naruto is an anime series that follows Naruto Uzumaki, a boy ostracized by his village for the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed in his body who follows his dreams of becoming a ninja. While Naruto boasts a very different world and different powers to One Piece, both series boast a very similar premise about a young boy with a lot of heart pursuing his dream of greatness.

    Our Flag Means Death

Those who enjoy the pirate element of One Piece will enjoy Our Flag Means Death, even though it’s not an anime. The series follows Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), a man who abandons his comfortable life as a wealthy family man to form a dysfunctional pirate crew and become the “Gentleman Pirate.” Our Flag Means Death is a swashbuckling, comedic tale demonstrating how much fun the pirate life can be.

    Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone is a fantasy series based on Leigh Bardugo’s trilogy of the same name. It takes place in the Grishaverse, where orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei) learns she is a Grisha with exceedingly rare powers that can unite her world. Shadow and Bone is perfect for viewers interested in One Piece's unique powers, young central team, and fantasy elements.

    Soul Eater

Soul Eater is an anime series about three teams that train at the Death Weapon Meister Academy under Shinigami (the personification of death) and are tasked with collecting the souls of 99 humans and one witch. Like in One Piece, the characters in Soul Eater have unique powers, as one race of humans in the show can transform into weapons. It’s imaginative, boasts excellent fight scenes, and makes the most of its overarching competition premise.

    Yu Yu Hakusho

Viewers who love One Piece’s upbeat tone and imaginative premise but want something more occult will be interested in Yu Yu Hakusho. The anime series follows Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who becomes a supernatural detective after being revived from the dead following an accident. It’s heavy on the fight scenes, competitive atmosphere, and humor while entwining a nice touch of morbidity.

    Zatch Bell!

Zatch Bell! is an anime series in which the titular character, a mystical creature called a Mamodo, is paired with schoolboy Kiyo Takamine to compete in a tournament to determine who the next Mamodo world ruler will be. Similar to One Piece, it’s an energetic and creative series in which the main characters experience numerous adventures while pursuing their dreams.
