Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed original series Silo (2023) will return for a third and fourth season. The show is a unique dystopian sci-fi series with elements of mystery, following engineer Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) as she lives in a 144-level underground silo with 10,000 other people. She must solve the puzzle of her people’s past and present, including whether the outside is inhabitable.
Viewers looking for more dystopian sci-fi/mystery series while awaiting Silo Season 3 can use our guide to find similar TV shows on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV+, and more.
Brave New World (2020)
Brave New World follows the residents of New London, whose “utopia” begins to show cracks when John the Savage (Alden Ehrenreich) arrives and introduces its residents to ideas outside its stringent caste system. The series mirrors Silo with its story of the New London inhabitants' desire for truth and freedom. Additionally, it’s an excellent choice for fans of hard sci-fi and Aldous Huxley’s novel of the same name.
Brave New World is visually stunning, philosophical, and filled with compelling, fully developed characters. With a slightly dark tone and societal focus, the series parallels Altered Carbon (2018) and Black Mirror (2011), making it particularly intriguing if you love dystopian and satirical sci-fi.
Counterpart (2017-2019)
Counterpart is perfect for viewers looking for a mind-bending sci-fi mystery similar to Silo. The show centers on Howard Silk (J. K. Simmons), a man who discovers that his employer has been hiding a secret about a parallel universe. It’s among the most underrated sci-fi mystery series with brilliant performances, an ambitious premise, and thrilling twists. It has more of a spy drama premise than Silo, but it boasts a similar dark tone and intelligent mystery.
One of the best parts of Counterpart is seeing Simmons portray doppelgängers and succeed at making each one distinct. If you enjoy stories about doppelgängers or clones, such as Orphan Black (2013), or mind-bending, complex sci-fi shows like Dark Matter (2024), Counterpart is the perfect watch.
Dark Matter (2024-Present)
Dark Matter is another excellent sci-fi series from Apple TV+. The show sees physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) forced to travel through a series of alternate realities to return home. Like Silo, it’s a top-notch, mind-bending, and mesmerizing sci-fi series where things are never quite as they seem. However, it also sets itself apart with the more personal, intimate story and family drama at its core.
Dark Matter offers the twists, turns, and complexity of both Silo and Counterpart, but it also echoes series like Invasion (2021) in that it tackles topics like regret, fulfillment, and human behavior.
Fallout (2024-Present)
Fallout follows Lucy (Ella Purnell), a girl raised in an underground bunker until violence sends her into the outside world, where she realizes much of what she has been told of her situation is a lie. The show boasts the most similar premise to Silo, as both series take place in underground bunkers and follow women on quests to discover the truth about their way of life.
It also touches lightly on shifting loyalties and the development of factions in the claustrophobic environment. However, Fallout centers more heavily on action and worldbuilding than Silo and is a lot more brutal. Viewers who like the concept of Silo but prefer a little less focus on mystery and a grittier tone will love Fallout.
Severance (2022-Present)
In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) works for a shadowy organization that performs surgeries to separate employees' personal lives from their work lives. The mysterious disappearance of one of his colleagues inspires Mark to investigate what his company truly does.
Severance parallels Silo’s slow-burning mystery and bold, complex sci-fi premise, but it also differentiates itself with the unique “severance” procedure and satirical commentary on corporate culture. It’s every bit as thought-provoking as Silo, but it also parallels the complexity of Counterpart and Dark Matter while adding a bit of horror as the cherry on top.
Station Eleven (2021-2022)
Station Eleven focuses on a small group of survivors from a deadly flu pandemic, who make a living as travelling performers in their post-apocalyptic society. It’s similar to Silo with its haunting atmosphere and slow-burning mystery, though the miniseries format allows Station Eleven to streamline its story a bit, resulting in a very satisfying conclusion.
Station Eleven leans more into a character-study format, delving deep into human resilience and morality set to the eerie backdrop of the apocalypse. The series offers a very distinct take on the post-apocalyptic genre. It doesn’t boast the action and grit some may expect when comparing it to other post-apocalyptic shows like The Walking Dead (2010). Instead, it more closely parallels The Last of Us (2023) with its thought-provoking commentary on humanity.
The Peripheral (2022)
The Peripheral takes place in a futuristic world where a young woman, Flynn Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz), discovers a startlingly realistic virtual reality simulator in which a mysterious figure gives her orders. Like Silo, The Peripheral boasts an ambitious and complex premise. While the complexity may feel a bit tedious to some, it’s an excellent show for those seeking a cerebral challenge.
Given the focus on virtual reality and the mind-bending nature of the show, The Peripheral most closely resembles The Matrix (1999) in tone and atmosphere. If you’re interested in a Matrix-esque series that still delves into the unknown as Silo does, The Peripheral is a must-see.
Under the Dome (2013-2015)
In Under the Dome, the residents of Chester's Mill, Maine, wake up one day to discover their small town separated from the rest of the world by a transparent dome. Although the context is different, Under the Dome is similar to Silo and Fallout in that it examines what happens when a small subset of humanity is confined to one space together, including the violence, hierarchies, and factions that quickly arise.
Not only is it an intriguing study on human behavior, but it is also an addictive mystery as the characters struggle to get to the bottom of what is happening. You’ll love Under the Dome if you’re looking for a unique drama with the claustrophobia of Silo and the horror of Severance.
Wayward Pines (2015-2016)
Wayward Pines is a sci-fi mystery centered on the eerie titular town, which is home to a number of confounding disappearances. If you want a series even more focused on mystery than Silo, Wayward Pines is the show for you.
In a way, Wayward Pines' setting within a supposedly idyllic town is even more unsettling than the underground bunker, perpetuating a constant atmosphere of dread as viewers realize everything is not as it seems. Similar to Silo, though, it keeps you on the edge of your seat with its irresistible mystery. The series is weird, creepy, and mystifying, and will stir nostalgia for Twin Peaks (1990) and other small-town horror.
Westworld (2016-2022)
Westworld centers on an amusement park where wealthy vacationers utilize humanoid robots to live out their fantasies—until the robots unexpectedly become sentient. The series offers the sci-fi/mystery premise of Silo and a strikingly similar musical score, but it is very distinct with its Western vibes and deep dive into the moral and ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence and humanoid robots.
Westworld offers a wholly engaging experience through its stunning visuals, meticulous worldbuilding, and philosophical perspective. Fans of the original 1973 film will love this reimagining, while fans of Silo will enjoy the sense of mystery and genre-blending.
