After almost a two-year wait, the last half of Yellowstone Season 5 arrived in 2025, marking the end of the critically acclaimed neo-western series. Although the original series has come to a close, Yellowstone will live on as a full-fledged franchise with numerous spin-off series.
With a plethora of spin-offs on the docket, including The Madison and 1944, those interested in catching up with the Yellowstone franchise can use our guide to find out how to stream the shows in release date order on platforms like Paramount+, Peacock, and more.
Yellowstone (2018-2025)
Yellowstone kicked off Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise in 2018. The series centers on the Dutton family, who struggle to maintain the largest cattle ranch in Montana while dealing with business issues and family drama.
The series is a unique blend of a modern western and family drama, boasting gorgeous settings and a comforting sense of escapism. The performances are also top-notch, including Kevin Costner’s fierce, powerhouse depiction of John Dutton. Fans of neo-westerns and comfort television, like Longmire (2012) and Ransom Canyon (2025), will love Yellowstone as it balances western grit with beautiful scenery and relatable drama.
1883 (2021-2022)
1883 is the first prequel to Yellowstone. It follows the post-Civil War generation of the Dutton family as they begin the journey that will ultimately see them settle in Montana. Due to its setting in the 1880s, 1883 is more of a proper western than Yellowstone. It leans into historical accuracy and realism and quite authentically portrays pioneer and wagon train life. As a result, it’s even grittier and darker than Yellowstone, exploring violence and loss with a somber and sometimes bleak tone.
If you enjoyed Yellowstone but are seeking something set outside the present, 1883 is an excellent choice with a seriousness and setting that are reminiscent of Deadwood (2004) and The English (2022). Given its prequel status and early 19th-century setting, viewers seeking to watch the Yellowstone shows in chronological order would start with 1883. However, beginning with Yellowstone is recommended for newcomers to draw you into the universe and give you a better appreciation of the Dutton family legacy and heightened curiosity about where it all started before diving into 1883.
1923 (2022-2025)
1923 is another Yellowstone prequel, which centers on Cara (Helen Mirren) and Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), as they see their family and ranch through the turbulent 1920s, including the Great Depression and prohibition.
The series aligns closer with 1883 than Yellowstone, boasting a similar gritty and somber tone as it delves into its historical setting. However, it sets itself apart with the star power of Ford and Mirren, who elevate the show with their chemistry and emotional performances. The story also delves more deeply into the topics of family and survival. 1923 offers the drama and western vibes of Yellowstone, but also the setting and grit of Boardwalk Empire (2010) and Damnation (2017).
The Madison (TBD)
A Yellowstone spin-off series, The Madison, is currently in development. Although the show was initially to be titled 2024, the title was ultimately changed to The Madison. The series is set in the present day and stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, a woman who moves with her family to Montana after suffering a personal tragedy.
As of now, the family at the center of The Madison appears not to have any connection to the Duttons. It remains to be seen if the Dutton family will make an appearance or if The Madison is simply set in the same universe but without a direct connection to Yellowstone.
6666 (TBD)
6666 is another Yellowstone spin-off series currently in development. The title refers to the 6666 Ranch, which Yellowstone features briefly. It is unclear what time period the series is set in. If set in the present day, viewers suspect the series will follow Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White), who left the Yellowstone ranch to work at 6666 in Texas. However, no cast or plot details have been confirmed as of this writing.
1944 (TBD)
A third Yellowstone prequel, 1944, is also in development. While no cast or plot details have been confirmed, the setting in 1944 means it is likely a sequel to 1923 and could feature some of the characters from that Dutton generation.
