4 Ways 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Sets Up Marvel's X-Men Reboot
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) is very much a Spider-Man movie that focuses on Peter Parker and ensures he has a story worth following. But being a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, it's no shock that we also get much wider connections to the growing universe.
In this case, the introduction of Jean Grey and a heavier focus on the mutant phenomenon perfectly set up a future that leads to the X-Men. But for better or worse, Brand New Day also introduces threats that only grow in severity, with hope that one character will find a family that will accept her for who she is. Jean Grey Travels To A Brighter Future On Her Own
At the end of Brand New Day, Peter Parker gains a friend in Jean Grey after putting his life on the line to save her. In return, she keeps him alive as he heals from a gunshot wound while Jean goes back into hiding. Once Peter is fully healed, she returns to living on the run and ends up on a bus going upstate.
The Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters is famously in Westchester, New York, and there's no reason to think she wouldn't be heading that way. She's not met another telepath besides her sister and likely wouldn't expect to be defending against them, making it easy for Xavier to find her and setting up her return as she joins the X-Men.
William Metzger Is Only One Piece Of A Larger And More Dangerous Puzzle
William Metzger, the head of Damage Control, showed a great fear of mutants early on as he kept their existence a secret. He knew they could be a threat and immediately used Sarah Grey to learn more about their power and weaponize it for people he deemed "worthy" of the power.
He escaped at the end of Brand New Day, taking all he knew with him. But his anti-mutant sentiments won't be the only ones, and what we see with him is just a taste of what's to come as potential names like Robert Kelly, Henry Gyrich and Graydon Creed grow in numbers. Magneto and Professor X rise to meet that challenge to fight bigotry.
The Machine That Killed Sarah Grey Teases A Key X-Men Tool
The biggest twist in Brand New Day was realizing V-Max wasn't a secret formula or project, but the scratched-off sticker on the vent above Sarah Grey's head. As she was being forced to use her powers, it was the last thing she saw, and she sent it to Jean as a psychic burst right before she died.
The machine that was then used on Grey amplified her powers and had the range of her telepathy expanded. Though she wasn't strong enough to deal with it at the time, the science behind it isn't unlike an early form of Cerebro. By amplifying a psychic's power, people like Charles Xavier could use it for good, finding and saving young wayward mutants.
The Universal Inhibitor Sets Up A Deadly Future For Mutants
To combat his changing DNA and control it, Peter Parker, with the help and warning of Bruce Banner, created a DNA inhibitor. From there, he modified it into a universal inhibitor to use on the Hulk and then Jean Grey.
Peter doesn't know the implications of this tech, and while his designs weren't copied and were destroyed, Metzger now knows it's possible to do. As a result, we could eventually see mutant inhibitor collars used against them, just as the Stark Drones, which can find mutant DNA, could be a precursor to Sentinels. It will be a while before these things come to fruition, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day proves they are still on the way.
