10 Movies Like 2024’s Nosferatu and Where to Stream Them

Vampire movies never truly go out of style. With their nocturnal habits, menacing presence, and undying bloodlust, vampires have provided ample fodder for imaginative filmmakers since the medium was first introduced. With 2024’s addition Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers continues the tradition with a gothic horror starring Bill Skarsgård as the terrifying Count Orlok, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe in a retelling of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.

If you loved Nosferatu and want to watch more similar films, make sure you check out our list of 10 movies like Nosferatu, and find out where you can stream them below!

    Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror

First and foremost, we have the 1922 original silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. This German expressionist masterpiece has defined the genre of vampire horror since its release, setting the aesthetics and tone for generations of filmmakers to come. The film is directed by FW Murnau and stars Max Schreck as Count Orlok (aka Dracula), and is based on Bram Stoker’s seminal 1897 novel. Robert Eggers’ film is heavily inspired by Murnau’s take, so if you want to see where it all began, make sure to check out Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.

    Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Over the years, there have been many attempts to retell the story of Dracula, but one of the most successful remains Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 dramatic horror starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, and Keanu Reeves. Oldman plays the Count in one of his most outrageously iconic performances to date, and the film succeeds in bringing a dazzling operatic drama to Bram Stoker’s dark story.

    Nosferatu the Vampyre

Director Werner Herzog’s contribution to the lore of Dracula arrived in 1979’s unmissable Nosferatu the Vampyre. This take, heavily influenced by Murnau’s 1922 silent classic, sees Klaus Kinski put on a performance to rival that of Max Schreck and delves into the tortured and conflicted soul of the protagonist. Herzog’s masterful retelling of Stoker’s story is an utterly unique take that features captivating visuals and performances not to be missed by fans of Nosferatu.

    Interview with the Vampire

Departing from stories based on Bram Stoker’s novel, Interview with the Vampire is based on author Anne Rice’s 1976 novel of the same name. The film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, and Christian Slater follows Louis de Pointe du Lac (Pitt), a man claiming to be a 200-year-old vampire, as he recounts his life to a skeptical reporter (Slater). If you’re looking for another classic suspenseful vampire film that tells a new story in the genre and explores the question of immortality in more depth, make sure to include Interview with the Vampire.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

This 2023 supernatural thriller directed by André Øvredal is based on one chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula called ‘The Captain's Log’. The chapter focuses on Dracula’s journey from Transylvania to London, hidden aboard the ship the Demeter and feeding off of the crew members at night. While it is overall not the best of vampire films, the suspense of the hidden menace as well as Liam Cunningham’s performance as the ship’s captain make the Last Voyage of the Demeter a great addition to a cosy night of vampire film watching.

    30 Days of Night

David Slade directs this 2007 vampire horror starring Josh Hartnett based on a comic book series of the same name. Once more expanding the vampiric lore without retelling Bram Stoker’s story, 30 Days of Night is one of the most directly horror-based films on the list. Taking place in a small town in Alaska during the polar night, the townsfolk find themselves set upon by vampires for 30 days — the largest stretch of darkness all year.

    Shadow of the Vampire

This 2000 gothic horror gets meta with the subject of Nosferatu. Starring John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe, Shadow of the Vampire focuses on the making of the original 1922 silent film, with Malkovich playing the increasingly distraught director Murnau as he comes to realise that Max Schreck (Dafoe), the actor portraying the Count, is in fact a real vampire. With plenty of nods to the original silent film, and excellent performances by Malkovich and Dafoe (the latter was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars), Shadow of a Vampire isn’t one to miss.

    Let the Right One In

This Swedish production from 2008 remains one of the most compelling vampire films of the 21st century thus far. This bloody yet heartfelt take sees a child vampire and her guardian struggle to blend into a small town, where she forms a bond with the outcast boy next door. Their connection grows, even as her identity and the harsh reality it comes with is revealed. If you want a film that remains within the vampire horror genre, but features a more modern, relationship-oriented story than Nosferatu, be sure to check out Let the Right One In.

    Renfield

It seems Nicholas Hoult’s stint in the vampiric world has simply continued with Nosferatu, because in 2023 he also starred in Renfield as the titular lackey. Renfield is the fanatical servant to Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel, and this film sees him take centre stage in modern day New Orleans, where he attends a 12-step group for recovering co-dependents to try and extract himself from the relationship with the Count. Nicolas Cage plays a spectacularly overbearing Dracula, and it’s not one to be missed if you’re looking for a lighthearted vampire film.

What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows is perhaps one of the best comedies overall of the 21st century thus far. This vampire mockumentary is created by New Zealanders Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, and stars the duo alongside Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, and Stu Rutherford. The film follows the lives of vampires living in a flat-share in modern Wellington, New Zealand. Complete with spats about whose turn it is to wash the dishes, run-ins with the local werewolves, and pandering wannabe familiars, What We Do in the Shadows can bring a bit of fun to the otherwise dark world of vampire movies.

Robert Eggers is one of the most celebrated horror directors of the 21st century thus far. Coming from a background in production design, he released his first feature film in 2015 with the critically acclaimed folk horror The Witch. Since then, he has solidified his reputation as a director who masterfully crafts his films by blending horror elements with folklore, and a dark aesthetic that prioritises historical accuracy. With his latest release Nosferatu now in cinemas, now is the perfect time to check out the rest of his short but impressive back catalogue. Find out where you can stream all of Robert Eggers’ films from the UK below!

How (and where) to watch Robert Eggers’ best films

After working for years as a production designer, Robert Eggers released his first feature film with 2015’s The Witch. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy in her debut role, in which she plays a young puritan girl suspected of performing witchcraft that led to the disappearance of her baby brother. The Witch brought Eggers much critical and fan attention, and left audiences excited to see what he would make next.

    • The Witch (2015)
    • The Lighthouse (2019)
    • The Northman (2022)
    • Nosferatu (2024)

His next project, The Lighthouse, did not disappoint. The film stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as 19th century lighthouse keepers isolated in a remote lighthouse in New England, where reality becomes blurred after a powerful storm. Based on an unfinished poem by Edgar Allan Poe of the same name, The Lighthouse succeeded in further confirming Eggers’ reputation as a formidable horror filmmaker.

Eggers’ next project, The Northman, incorporated much of his signature interest in folklore and mythology into an epic historical action film. Taking place in medieval Scandinavia during the time of the Vikings, The Northmen tells the story of Amleth — a character from Scandinavian folklore that went on to inspire Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Amleth, a viking warrior prince, is portrayed by Alexander Skarsgård, who stars alongside Nicole Kidman and several of Eggers’ previous collaborators, including Anya Taylor-Joy and Willem Dafoe.

Eggers’ latest film, Nosferatu, is a retelling of the iconic German silent film from 1922 of the same name, which was based on Bram Stoker’s seminal novel Dracula. The film’s aesthetic is heavily inspired by the source material, but Eggers adds his own brand of storytelling to make the film truly his own.

  • How (and Where) to Watch the Best Daniel Craig Movies

How (and Where) to Watch the Best Daniel Craig Movies

    Alexandra Kon

Daniel Craig is one of the most popular British actors of our time. He is perhaps best known for bringing his rugged charisma to the role of James Bond in five films from 2006 to 2021. In addition to playing 007, Craig has starred in a number of dramatic and comedic roles throughout his career that demonstrate his great range and versatility as an actor. Check out all of Daniel Craig’s best movies below, and find out where you can stream them online from the UK!

    Skyfall

This Bond film from 2012 makes the top of the list because, while every Bond film has a high-stakes plot, none before or since has packed quite the same emotional punch. This film dismantles the MI6 system as we had known it and forces Bond to confront his own painful past. Daniel Craig masterfully carries the character through the film with all of the swagger we’ve come to know and love from his Bond, but also the raw emotionality of such a character finally facing himself.

    Knives Out

If you thought Daniel Craig was a one-trick pony, you’d be proven wrong by Knives Out. This 2019 mystery sees Craig star as Benoit Blanc, a famous detective hired to solve the locked-door murder of bestselling author Harlan Thrombey. Craig puts on an American Southern drawl that somehow works in its over-the-topness — although it must be said that it is an entirely fictitious accent. But Craig’s eccentric, perceptive, and flamboyant portrayal of the character melds the star-studded production into a perfect Agatha Christie-style murder mystery that went on to spawn a franchise.

    Queer

This 2024 film from director Luca Guadagnino sees Craig once again masterfully step away from his action-star type casting to play William Lee, a World War II veteran living in Mexico City who becomes infatuated with a younger man while in the throes of his own addictions. This love story sees Craig bring out one of the most vulnerable and tragic performances of his career.

    Defiance

In this 2008 war film, Daniel Craig plays Tuvia Bielski who, together with his brother Zus, led a resistance group that saved many Jewish lives in Belarus during the Nazi occupation. Here Craig’s rugged charisma shines through as the leader of the group, fighting against enormous odds in the freezing wintery woods of Belarus.

    Casino Royale

In 2006, Daniel Craig stepped into the fitted tux of James Bond for the first time in Casino Royale. This action-packed film brought the 007 back in style and introduced Craig’s iteration of the character as a swaggering, charismatic, and compellingly macho hero — while adding a tone of ironic self-reflection necessary to make Bond still palatable to modern audiences.

    Layer Cake

This 2004 action-crime film provided a strong confirmation of Craig's qualification to play James Bond. In Layer Cake, he plays a criminal in London who abides by strong moral principles while playing a vital role in the production and distribution of cocaine. Although he’s looking to leave the business, he is tasked with completing two final tasks that prove much trickier than expected.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

In this 2021 sequel to Knives Out, Craig reprises his role as Detective Benoit Blanc in a Netflix production featuring another all-star cast. Craig once again busts out his over the top antics as the Southern detective while solving a compelling mystery.

    Lucky Logan

Steven Soderbergh’s 2017 action-comedy film sees Craig try out a Southern US American accent for the first time. Playing the subtly named explosives expert Joe Bang, Craig delivers one heck of a performance opposite Adam Driver and Channing Tatum. The two play brothers who assemble a team of criminals to help them rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway while evading law enforcement.

    Infamous

This 2006 drama focused on the life and career of author Truman Capote who, while writing his book ‘In Cold Blood’ built a complicated relationship with one of the incarcerated killers, Perry Smith. Craig plays the murderer behind bars, portraying him as an intelligent, emotional, and traumatised man whose past experiences led his life to take the darkest of turns.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

In this 2011 David Fincher adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel of the same name, Craig plays journalist Mikael Blomkvist, the founder of Millennium magazine who is known for ruthlessly exposing government corruption. Starring opposite Rooney Mara as the tough-as-nails hacker Lisbeth Salander, Craig delivers a steadfast performance as the weight of the mystery the duo are investigating unfolds.

    Honorable mentions:

    • Spectre
    • No Time to Die
    • Munich
    • Quantum of Solace
    • The Mother
    • Sylvia

Looking back at the 10 most popular movies of 2024, it’s clear that audiences this year were keen to watch almost all of the films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, which took place in March. Six of the top ten films listed above were nominated for Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (#4 on the list) succeeding in taking the coveted award home. However, UK audiences made their preferences clear with the captivating French drama Anatomy of a Fall, outstripping Oppenheimer and taking the top position.

Dune: Part Two, Godzilla Minus One, and Late Night with the Devil were not part of the 2024 Oscars race, but still found their way onto the year’s most popular movies on streaming services. It’s also worth noting that Dune: Part Two was released in cinemas in 2024 and has been available to stream for a shorter period of time than 2023 titles like Oppenheimer and Barbie. As one of the summer’s big box office hits, it’s no wonder fans wanted to revisit Denis Villeneuve’s film when it became available to stream on several platforms.

Japan’s Godzilla Minus One debuted in cinemas in the UK at the end of December 2023 and was the second highest-grossing film after Wonka during its opening weekend. Godzilla Minus One was then released worldwide for streaming on Netflix in June 2024, where it became an instant fan favourite. The final entry on the list, Late Night with the Devil, was acquired by Amazon’s Shudder horror channel after its debut at SXSW. After a stint in cinemas, the supernatural horror film became available to stream on Amazon Prime in mid-April 2024.

Amy Adams is one of the most talented and celebrated American actresses of the 21st century. The award-winning actress has starred in an array of movies across genres, including as a fairytale princess in the comedy-musical Enchanted and as an interpreter for new alien creatures in the sci-fi drama Arrival.

Check out some of Amy Adams’ best film performances below, and find out where you can watch all the movies on the list below!

    Arrival

Denis Villeneuve’s 2016 sci-fi drama Arrival features Amy Adams as a linguist brought in to find a way to communicate with aliens who arrived on a ship from outer space. Throughout the film, Adams brings an emotional and thought-provoking performance as Dr Louise Banks, as she uses her knowledge and empathy to develop a radical approach to communicating with beings beyond human comprehension.

    Nocturnal Animals

In this 2016 psychological-thriller from writer-director Tom Ford, Adams stars opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as his character’s estranged ex-wife, Susan. After Susan receives a copy of the book written by her ex-husband, Edward, as she reads she starts to understand the book and its dark nature mirror their relationship and the pain it left in its wake. Adams’ performance as a wealthy gallery owner, now neglected by her current husband, trapped within her own patterns is not one to miss.

    Enchanted

Moving on to lighter fare, Enchanted stars Adams as Giselle, a fairytale princess from the land of Andalasia. When her evil mother-in-law-to-be, in an attempt to stay in power, pushes her into the ‘real world’, Giselle finds herself lost in the live-action New York City trying to get back to Andalasia. In this 2007 rom-com musical, Adams stars opposite Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden — the first as a divorce lawyer who helps her navigate NYC, and the latter as her Prince Charming from Andalasia singing and dancing his way through the city trying to find her. In this film, and its 2022 followup Disenchanted, Adams shows off her comedic and vocal chops.

    Big Eyes

Amy Adams stars in director Tim Burton’s 2014 comedy-drama about the true story of American artist Margaret Keane, whose second husband, Walter Keane, took credit for her distinguished paintings featuring characters with large eyes. Adams’ performance captures Margeret’s journey from trusting wife to empowered artist, as she attempts to claim mastery over her own success.

    Nightbitch

This 2024 black comedy adapted by Marielle Heller from Rachel Yoder’s novel of the same name stars Adams as an artist turned stay-at-home mother caring for her young son. While she processes the change in the direction of her career, body, and relationships, she also starts to realise she may be turning into a dog. This film brings together Adams’ comedic prowess along with her ability to capture the complex emotional stages in a woman’s life.

    Junebug

This 2005 comedy-drama from director Phil Morrison features Amy Adams in the role that launched her career and gave her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She plays Ashley, the bubbly, young, pregnant sister to George. When George brings his new wife Madeleine to visit the family in South Carolina, Ashley and Madeleine strike up a friendship. In this film, Adams brings an infectious enthusiasm and raw emotion to her performance that makes Junebug for that reason alone worth watching.

    American Hustle

In this 2013 black comedy, Adams stars opposite Christian Bale as a con artist forced to participate in an elaborate FBI sting operation after getting caught. The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner, and was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for Adams. Her performance as Sydney sees her expertly playing a variety of roles as she goes undercover, and really brings home just how talented a performer she is.

    Disenchanted

This 2022 follow-up to the beloved 2007 film Enchanted sees Giselle, now married to Robert, some 10 years after the events of the first film. After having a baby, the couple decide to move to the suburban town Monroeville, which sees them confront the mundanity of everyday life. But when Giselle wishes for her life to become a fairy tale, the town transforms into Monrolasia, and in that land Giselle goes up against the domineering Malvina Monro while discovering she might be somewhat of a baddie herself.

    Doubt

John Patrick Shanley’s 2008 acclaimed drama Doubt saw Adams star opposite Meryl Streep in a performance nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the Academy. In this film Adams plays Sister James, a nun and confidant to Streep’s Sister Aloysius Beauvier who accuses Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Brendan Flynn of abusing an altar boy at their parish. While Streep and Hoffman’s performances dominate the film, Adams more than holds her own as the meek history teacher trying to keep her faith in the face of doubt.

    The Woman in the Window

In this 2021 psychological-thriller from director Joe Wright, Adams stars as Anna, an agoraphobic child psychologist who, in the aftermath of a disintegrated marriage, retreats into her brownstone apartment and finds entertainment watching her neighbours from a safe distance. But when she witnesses one neighbour seemingly being murdered, she finds herself in a state where the lines between  reality and illusion are increasingly blurred.

The Best Ridley Scott Movies, Ranked - and How to Stream Them

You never know quite what sort of film you’re going to get next with director Ridley Scott, but you almost always know it’s going to be different to his previous one, and more often than not it’s going to be good. The British film-maker has been at the top of the business for nearly 50 years and now, at the incredible age of 86, he has a new film, Gladiator II, that could be one of the biggest of 2024. See below for our ranking of the best Ridley Scott films and where to stream them in the United Kingdom.

Ridley Scott came out of the gate quickly in 1977 with the critically acclaimed historical drama The Duellists, and he soon had a couple of masterpieces in the bag. His second film, Alien, is still unrivalled in the genre it helped to create: creeping, monster-driven suspense horror, set in the black void of space. If creating the classic character of Ripley weren’t enough, Scott’s next film Blade Runner, a sci-fi neo-noir, made Harrison Ford equally iconic as Rick Deckard.

Scott’s career is not without its fallow periods - he had one after Blade Runner, making a few relatively forgettable films before roaring back with Thelma & Louise, a feminist road movie that has grown to become a highly influential classic. His next big hit, probably his biggest, came nine years later in the form of Gladiator, a Roman epic with the action of a blockbuster and the tight, simple story of a claustrophobic character piece.

The great director only became more unpredictable from there, working again with Gladiator star Russell Crowe but remoulding him as a romantic lead in the surprisingly gentle A Good Year, before pivoting into tough mobster drama with American Gangster. The Alien franchise was revisited, to decent effect if not to the standard of the stellar original, in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

By 2015 it seemed as if Scott’s career might finally be tailing off a little, but then he came back yet again with The Martian, starring Matt Damon as a man stranded on the Red Planet. Ambitious, witty and imaginative, it’s one of Scott’s finest blockbusters.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Scott’s most recent pictures is how talked-about they are: directors who keep going into their old age tend to churn out movies that are politely well received by their fans without making too much wider impact, but Scott still has a knack for cultural relevance. In 2021, after a long absence either side of the Covid pandemic, he delivered both the challenging period drama The Last Duel and the mischievous biopic House of Gucci, following them in 2023 with a wildly ambitious epic, Napoleon. You wouldn’t put it past him to come up with a couple more hits, and perhaps a couple more interesting duds, before he finally folds away his director’s chair.

Audiences eagerly returned to ancient Rome for the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 masterpiece Gladiator with Gladiator II. The film stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, a man with claims to power in Rome who was sent to live far away from the city. He is dragged back into that polemic world when his village is destroyed by an invading Roman general, Marcus Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal. Intent on seeking both justice and revenge, Lucius enters the gladiatorial arena.

After watching both the original Gladiator and Gladiator II, you might not want to leave those epic historical worlds behind just yet. So, check out these 10 movies and TV series similar to Gladiator 2 and find out where you can stream them below!

    Kingdom of Heaven

After the success of Gladiator in 2000, director Ridley Scott returned to make another epic historical film in 2005 with Kingdom of Heaven, starring Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, and Liam Neeson. It follows the story of a humble blacksmith, Barian (Bloom), who is enlisted to fight in the Crusades in the Holy Land and, after a perilous journey there, finds himself confronted with the brutal corruption and a struggle for power that sees him become one of the few defenders of the city of Jerusalem.

If you’re looking for a film with sweeping battles, epic historical drama, and political intrigue mixed with personal and moral struggles, look no further than Kingdom of Heaven. In addition, you can count on Ridley Scott’s signature epic style to take the emotional and historical stakes to the next level.

    The Eagle

The Eagle is a 2011 epic historical drama directed by Kevin Macdonald, and stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland. Tatum plays Marcus Flavius Aquila, the son of a senior centurion who disappeared along with his entire legion in Britain and goes there as a centurion intent on finding out what happened and restoring the lost legion’s eagle standard.

Like Gladiator II, The Eagle features epic battles mixed with personal stories of protagonists in the time of ancient Rome seeking to restore glory to their city or legion.

    Those About to Die

This 2024 Amazon series explores the multifaceted layers of ancient Rome in 79 AD, when the city’s corrupt politicians struggle for power and delight in increasingly violent blood sport spectacles like chariot racing and gladiatorial games. The sports attract those looking for success, from horse breeders, gladiators and chariot racers to gamblers as they all converge on Rome trying to rise above the rest.

If you want a gritty look at the lives of many individuals trying to survive in ancient Rome at the time of the gladiators, Those About to Die provides a new perspective for fans of Gladiator II.

    Barbarians

Barbarians is a German Netflix series from 2020 that lasted two seasons. It takes place during the Roman Empire when Roman forces occupied much of what was then called Germania. The story includes recounts of the rebellions led by the so-called ‘barbarian’ tribes as they resisted Roman rule.

Historians and archaeologists have praised Barbarians for its accurate depiction of life at the time, from the structure of the villages and plans for battle to its costume design. The series also gives more insight into the effect of the Roman Empire on the rest of Europe, which is sure to interest the more history-minded fans of Gladiator II.

    Rome

This sprawling two season HBO series ran from 2005 to 2007 and depicts the Roman Empire like never before. The series primarily focused on the lives of the rich and powerful, along with two centurions, as they navigate the complex political environment leading up to Julius Caesar’s rise to power and subsequent assassination, before leaning into the power struggle between Octavian and Mark Anthony.

While Rome is very much a product of early 2000s HBO, the series’ dramatic depiction of so many important events in the history of Rome makes it prime viewing for Gladiator II fans looking for something to watch that takes place in ancient Rome itself.

    Braveheart

Although Braveheart takes place far from the setting of ancient Rome, it shares a lot thematically with Gladiator II. Both films feature strong protagonists intent on protecting or avenging their loved ones against far more powerful forces. Braveheart stars Mel Gibson as William Wallace, the leader of the Scottish rebellion against the English, destabilising the tyrannical rule of King Edward I.

    I, Claudius

This iconic BBC miniseries from 1976 remains one of the best fictional accounts of the early days of the Roman Empire up until the death of Emperor Claudius. Rather than fixate on the epic battles and blood sport spectacles usual for films and series about ancient Rome, I, Claudius focuses on the interpersonal drama taking place within the elite circles of rulers, politicians, and their spouses as they backstab and seduce each other to gain a hold on power.

If you’re keen to see a series similar to Gladiator II that features far less violence and far more political and interpersonal drama, check out this iconic British series.

    The Last of the Mohicans

This 1995 film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as a half-white, half-Native American member of the dwindling Mohican tribe who live peacefully alongside British colonists. But when two daughters of a British colonel are abducted, the tribe become involved in the bloody French and Indian War. Like in Gladiator II, the warrior protagonists are reluctantly dragged into gruesome conflicts created by those in power and find themselves in a struggle for survival and peace.

    The Northman

This bloody historical action film from 2022 is directed by Robert Eggers and stars Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, a viking prince who sets out on a quest to avenge the death of his father. Like Gladiator II, themes of vengeance and justice lie at the heart of The Northman, and while it takes place in Scandinavia rather than ancient Rome, the epic battles and political intrigue make it great viewing for anyone who was entertained by Gladiator II.

    Spartacus

This classic historical epic from 1960 was directed by iconic director Stanley Kubrick and stars Kirk Douglas as the legendary slave turned rebellion leader Spartacus. The story follows Spartacus as he is plucked from a mining pit and brought to Rome to become a gladiator. While there, he refuses to cooperate with some of the most heinous requests from Roman elites and winds up sparking a gladiator rebellion that morphs into an all-out slave rebellion against the Roman Republic.

Like Gladiator II, Spartacus focuses on an individual who goes against the grain in ancient Rome’s gladiatorial ring — bringing the battle to the elites who thought the blood sport was only for their entertainment.

When Silo first debuted in 2023 on Apple TV+, no one could have predicted its success in becoming one of the most popular series of the year. Based on author Hugh Howey’s book trilogy Wool, the series takes place in a dystopian reality in which humanity is forced to live in silos after the outside environment becomes uninhabitable. The story focuses on Juliette Nichols, an engineer who becomes entangled in a plot that brings her to start questioning the reality and regime under which they live.

The first episode of Silo Season 2 was released on November 15, 2024, and with episodes airing weekly you may be craving a little more dystopian drama on your screens. So, make sure to check out these 11 TV series like Silo, and find out where you can stream them by scrolling through the list below!

    Snowpiercer

The series is set in a dystopian future 2026 in which the planet has frozen over due to climate change, leaving the human survivors seeking refuge aboard a massive thousand-and-one-car train known as Snowpiercer. The humans are divided into strict classes by compartment, and they are all held under the watchful eye of the mysterious Wilford at the helm of the train.

Snowpiercer is similar to Silo in its exploration of a dystopian future in which humans live in closed quarters surrounded by an uninhabitable world. It also has the criminal elements of Silo, in which a detective investigates a series of murders in the first season against the backdrop of class warfare about to boil over.

    Ascension

This one-season series from 2014 takes place some 51 years into a space mission after a fictional President John F Kennedy — fearing the destruction of Earth during the Cold War — sends a ship to colonise a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri.  While on their way, a murder happens aboard the ship that sets off a series of events that get the team members questioning the true nature of their mission.

Like Silo, Ascension takes place in a closed setting with no access to the outside world. The series also starts out with a murder that causes those aboard the ship to start questioning what they are really doing there, and if their reality is in fact what they believe it to be.

    Severance

In this dystopian sci-fi series from 2022, employees of Lumon Industries agree to “sever” their consciousness in a controversial procedure that makes them forget everything when they leave work and vice versa — dividing them into ‘Innie’ (at work) and ‘Outie’ (outside of work) personalities. But while one employee, Mark Scout, navigates an increasingly strange life at work, he discovers that his two lives in fact overlap.

Like Silo, Severance deals with a seemingly tightly controlled organisation that begins to show its weaknesses as time goes on. Both series feature a person in the middle whose suspicions about what is really going on start to grow, kicking off a series of revelatory escalating events.

    Foundation

In a distant dystopian future, the galaxy is ruled by a dynasty of clones of the emperor Cleon. Mathematician Hari Seldon and his protogee Gaal present the conclusion found through his theory of ‘psychohistory’ that the current empire will fail unless human knowledge and history is somehow preserved. The regime grudgingly allows him to establish a way to store this knowledge in a place called the Foundation, while keeping their suspicions about the true nature of his activities.

While Foundation is not quite as spatially constricted as Silo, the political intrigue and the slow falling apart of a despotic ruling system are themes that tie the two series closely together.

    Andor

This Star Wars story takes place in a galaxy far, far away some five years before the events of Rogue One and A New Hope. The series focuses on Cassian Andor as he goes from a thief to becoming a top spy for the Rebel Alliance. Like Silo, the series takes place in a dystopian setting where under the surface a great unrest is brewing that one main character slowly uncovers as time goes on.

    From

In the close confines of a small town in the United States, those who enter cannot leave due to the evil creatures who lurk in the surrounding woods and terrify the residents at night. The town’s sheriff and other residents spend their time trying to survive while desperately plotting a way to escape.

Like Silo, From takes place within the confines of a small space with limited resources. As time goes on, the residents start to discover the larger plot lurking under the surface.

    The Last of Us

Some twenty years after the outbreak of a deadly fungal pandemic, the world is plunged into a desperate struggle for survival. But when a young girl, Ellie, is discovered who appears to be immune to the disease, a smuggler named Joel is tasked with bringing her safely across the post-apocalyptic wasteland the US has become so she can help scientists develop a vaccine.

Like Silo, the Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting where the surrounding environment is not only hostile but downright dangerous.

    The Expanse

In a distant future, humans have successfully expanded beyond Earth to colonise the solar system. However, Earth’s political struggles continue to plague humanity — this time on a galaxy-wide scale. Caught in the mix in a key but mysterious role is a ship whose crew slowly uncover why they play such an important role in who wins in the struggle for power.

Like Silo, The Expanse takes place in closed quarters and deals with political intrigue and conspiracies that are slowly uncovered throughout the seasons.

    The Peripheral

This series produced by the creators of Westworld takes place in a future in which a brother and sister, Burton and Flynne, are hired to test a new virtual reality game. While in the game, Flynne discovers that the VR has become blurred with actual reality and uncovers a secret that puts both her and her entire family at risk.

Much of The Peripheral takes place in the confines of a VR game and parallels Silo in the way the main characters uncover a much larger plot set up by the creators that has far reaching implications for them and everyone else.

    Station Eleven

Station Eleven takes place some twenty years after a deadly flu pandemic wipes out much of humanity, leaving the survivors to struggle to create a new order while holding on to what they lost. The series follows a group of survivors as they make their way through the post-apocalyptic world and try to rebuild a new society, even as a cult leader with sinister intentions tries to gain the upper hand.

Like Silo, Station Eleven takes place in a post-apocalyptic reality in which the survivors try to hold on to their humanity while establishing a new society.

    Counterpart

Howard Silke is a quiet, low-level bureaucrat working for the Office of Interchange in Berlin, Germany. His life is turned upside down when a secret is revealed to him: that in 1987 a portal to a parallel world was opened up due to an East German experiment, and that the connection between the two worlds is hidden in the basement of the Office of Interchange. Howard realises that he also has a counterpart in the parallel world — a savvy agent who is part of a larger Cold War operation raging between the two worlds.

Like Silo, at Counterpart’s core is a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the world as we know it. The intrigue and mystery surrounding the plot, as well as the slow unfurling of the extent of the implications make for compelling viewing for any fan of Silo.

The Omen franchise brought fears of the antichrist to a whole new level in 1976, and continues its reign of terror to today. Richard Donner’s first instalment starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick follows the story of a couple whose son Damien turns out to be the son of the devil himself. The film is now revered as an iconic classic of the horror genre, and went on to spawn another six instalments, including one remake and a television series.

Find out how (and where) to watch the Omen franchise in order, and find out how to stream all titles below!

How to watch the Omen franchise in order of release

The first Omen film was released in 1976 and follows the terrifying story of Robert and Katherine Thorn. After mysterious and violent events begin to take place on their estate, they come to realise their young son Damien is in fact the antichrist. The 1978 sequel follows Damien in his teenage years, and The Final Conflict sees him reach adulthood and the full potential of his evil.

    • The Omen (1976)
    • Damien – Omen II (1978)
    • Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981)
    • Omen IV: The Awakening (1991)
    • The Omen (2006)
    • Damien – TV series (2016)
    • The First Omen (2024)

Omen IV: The Awakening is a television movie that takes up a new story in the Omen universe, focusing on a young girl who turns out to be Damien’s daughter. However, the film was critically panned so no sequels were made.

In 2006, the franchise was reborn with a remake of the original film which ushered in a new generation of fans. In 2016, a television series called Damien that lasted one season aired that focused again on Damien. The series takes place in the Omen universe on a different timeline after the first film. In this timeline, Damien does not know his true identity until he is 30 years old and working as a war photographer.

In 2024, a prequel film was released called The First Omen, which explores the events leading up to Damien’s birth.

How to watch the Omen franchise in chronological order

If you want to watch the Omen franchise in order, it’s best to start with the 2024 prequel film, The First Omen, which tells the story of how Damien came into being. From there, the story leads to the original The Omen, which can also be combined or exchanged with the 2006 remake. The next two films — Omen II and III — follow the release order.

    • The First Omen
    • The Omen / The Omen
    • Damien – Omen II
    • Omen III: The Final Conflict
    • Omen IV: The Awakening
    • Damien (TV series)

Omen IV follows the story of Damien’s young daughter who inherits his powers, but does not otherwise share much in common with the previous films. Finally, the 2016 Damien series can be watched either alone or after the first Omen film due to the fact that it takes place on a different timeline. It is meant to be a direct sequel to The Omen, but takes place years later when Damien turns 30 and comes to finally realise he is the antichrist.

11 Horror Movies Like Terrifier (And Where to Stream Them)

    Alexandra Kon

Damien Leone’s Terrifier movies have been unapologetically splashing fans with buckets of blood since the first instalment arrived on screens in 2016. With so many modern slasher horrors delving into the psychological complexities of their killers, it was almost refreshing for fans to see a villain whose only motivation to kill is pure evil delight — precisely the chaotic energy that Art the Clown brings while terrorising his victims.

But with only three current Terrifier instalments out, you might be hankering for some other slasher films like Terrifier to watch. Whether you’re looking for another charismatic clown killer, more creepy holiday-themed thrills, or just a bloody disgusting gorefest, there’s something for you on the list below. Check out these 11 slasher movies like Terrifier, and find out where to stream them below!

    All Hallows’ Eve

All Hallows’ Eve was written and directed by Terrifer creator Damien Leone, and marks the first time Art the Clown appears on screen. The film follows the gory story of a babysitter and two kids who discover an unmarked VHS tape on Halloween. The tape contains three different stories that graphically show Art the Clown creatively killing his victims — before the story turns on them.

If you’re looking for a film that brings the same comedic gore, and even features the same villain as Terrifier, All Hallows’ Eve is as close as it gets. You might also want to check out its sequel, All Hallows’ Eve 2, although it takes a different approach and features eight stories from different directors found on another VHS tape, and sees other bloodthirsty villains take centre stage, rather than Art the Clown.

    Thanksgiving

Iconic horror director Eli Roth finally released Thanksgiving in 2023, after first making a fake trailer for the film that was featured in Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 film Grindhouse. The film takes place in a small town in Massachusetts where inhabitants are terrorised by a killer in a John Carver mask around the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanksgiving has that same scary mixture as Terrifier of festive holiday cheer mixed with bloody murder. Creative kills abound, and Roth certainly doesn’t shy away from a Thanksgiving-themed slice and dice.

    Maniac

This 2012 remake of the 1980s original Maniac stars Elijah Wood and Nora Arnezeder as a serial killer who collects the scalps of his victims for his mannequin collection and an unwitting photographer with whom he falls in love, respectively. Although Maniac is much more serious in tone than the Terrifier films, if you’re looking for gore you’ll find plenty of it here.

    The Evil Dead

The Evil Dead is both Sam Raimi’s directorial debut and the first instalment in his iconic trilogy of supernatural horror films. The film centres around Ash Williams and his group of friends who head to a cabin in the woods for a fun night away. But what starts as harmless fun reading from an old book they find becomes a night of terror as they unwittingly awaken the dead and must do anything to not become one of them. If you love the over the top madness of the Terrifier movies, make sure to (re)watch The Evil Dead.

    Dead Alive / Braindead

Before the Lord of the Rings films, New Zealand director Peter Jackson made some fantastic comedic horror films. Dead Alive (otherwise known as Braindead) is an over the top feature about a young man whose mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey, subsequently dies and comes back in zombified form, going on a seemingly unstoppable bloody rampage. While Dead Alive has a far more 1980s campy vibe than Terrifier, the entertainment factor and mix of comedy and horror should not be missed by any Terrifier fan.

    Stitches

Stitches is a comedy-slasher featuring another deranged clown killer. This film by Conor McMahon sees a cynical loser clown killed while entertaining at a birthday party brought back to life by a clown cult because “a clown who doesn't finish his party act can never rest.” The reanimated Stitches proceeds to go out for bloody, quippy revenge with creative kills to rival those of Art the Clown.

    Hatchet

Adam Green’s 2006 film Hatchet takes us down to New Orleans, where a group of tourists on a swamp tour become stranded overnight in the bayou. Unbeknownst to them, they are now in the territory of a killer who will take down anyone who enters the swamp. While the villain might be less of a diva than Art, the film itself is full of bloody kills and over the top chase scenes.

    The Hills Run Red

This deranged slasher film from 2009 sees a group of teenagers take to the woods in order to recover a lost horror film called The Hills Run Red in a cabin. However, what starts as a thrilling adventure quickly turns into a nightmare when the killer from the film, a horribly mutilated man known as Babyface, proceeds to stalk and attack them. True to its title, The Hills Run Red spills buckets of blood, and the killer’s mask is truly something terrible to behold.

    House of 1000 Corpses

House of 1000 Corpses is Rob Zombie’s first feature film and follows a group of teenagers who find themselves captured on Halloween by a deranged family who own the roadside attraction The Museum of Monsters and Madmen. This gory film features enough blood to rival any Terrifier movie, and the clownish costumes alone no doubt inspired Art the Clown’s getup.

    Haunt

This 2019 horror film written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods sees a group of friends on Halloween night enter a haunted house that turns out to be run by murderous employees. As they make their way through the house, the danger becomes all too real, and they must find a way to get to safety before the deranged clowns, zombies, and witches tear them apart.

    Silent Night

This 2012 slasher takes us back to the festive Christmas theme mixed with bloody murder. Set in a small town in Midwest America, the town’s police force are on the hunt for a maniac dressed in a Santa Claus costume who is killing those he deems ‘naughty’. Like the Terrifier films, Silent Night brings the comedy, over the top gore, and creative kills that would thrill any slasher fan.

Since 2011, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s chilling anthology series American Horror Story has been bringing gruesome stories to life on the small screen. Known for its glossy aesthetics, over the top storytelling, illustrious cast members, and delicate weaving of modern issues with classic horror tropes, American Horror Story certainly has made its mark on the horror genre.

With 12 seasons and counting available to stream, along with a companion spinoff series in American Horror Stories, there’s plenty of American Horror content to watch. Check out the JustWatch guide to how to watch every season of American Horror Story in order below!

How to watch American Horror Story in order of release

American Horror Story has released a new season (almost) every year since 2011. Because it is an anthology series, each season is (mostly) its own unique story and can therefore be watched in order of release without any major continuity issues.

    • American Horror Story: Murder House (2011)
    • American Horror Story: Asylum (2012)
    • American Horror Story: Coven (2013)
    • American Horror Story: Freak Show (2014)
    • American Horror Story: Hotel (2015)
    • American Horror Story: Roanoke (2016)
    • American Horror Story: Cult (2017)
    • American Horror Story: Apocalypse (2018)
    • American Horror Story: 1984 (2019)
    • American Horror Story: Double Feature (2021)
    • American Horror Story: NYC (2022)
    • American Horror Story: Delicate (2023–2024)

Some of the actors who reappear throughout the seasons in different (or the same) roles include Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lang, Lily Rabe, Kathy Bates, and others. In addition to Ryan Murphy’s close collaborators who have faithfully appeared across multiple seasons, each season features top celebrity guest stars such as Lady Gaga, Stevie Nicks, Naomi Campbell, Trixie Mattel, and Kim Kardashian.

How to watch American Horror Story in chronological order

Although American Horror Story is an anthology series, each season does take place in a specific epoch and some stories carry references or ramifications for future stories along the timeline. It would therefore be quite a good idea to watch the American Horror Story seasons in chronological order, if you want to pick up on all the references and crossovers. In the list below, the years in parenthesis refer to the year in which the season is set.

    • American Horror Story: Freak Show (1952)
    • American Horror Story: Asylum (1964)
    • American Horror Story: NYC (1981)
    • American Horror Story: 1984 (1984)
    • American Horror Story: Murder House (2011)
    • American Horror Story: Coven (2013)
    • American Horror Story: Roanoke (2014)
    • American Horror Story: Hotel (2015)
    • American Horror Story: Cult (2017)
    • American Horror Story: Apocalypse (2020)
    • American Horror Story: Double Feature (2021)
    • American Horror Story: Delicate (2023–2024)

Freak Show takes place in the 1950s in a carnival, while Asylum unfolds in a mental institution at Briarcliff Manor in the 1960s. NYC takes place in the 1980s and follows a string of murders and the outbreak of a deadly virus in New York City. 1984 takes place in the titular year and pays homage to the slasher genre popularised in the ‘80s, and is set in a classic summer camp.

Murder House, the first season of AHS, follows the story of the Harmon family in 2011 as they attempt to survive moving into a haunted house. While Coven is set in 2013, it also features flashbacks to other eras as it follows the story of the descendents of witches persecuted during the Salem Witch Trials.

Roanoke takes place in 2014 and pays homage to the supernatural horror genre and is filmed in a part documentary, part found-footage style. Hotel takes place in 2015 and follows the strange happenings at the Hotel Cortez. This season also features callbacks to Murder House and Coven.

Cult takes place in 2017 in the aftermath of Trump’s presidential win in the US, and focuses on a cult terrorising the Michigan suburb Brookfield Heights. The season also features connections to Freak Show. Apocalypse takes place in 2020 and is strongly connected to Coven, Murder House, and Hotel, featuring several overlapping characters and stories converging and continuing together.

Double feature takes place in 2021 and features two separate stories, one that focuses on a coastal town in Massachusetts and another that follows a group of campers who find themselves caught in the middle of an alien conspiracy plot.

Finally, Delicate takes place in 2023/2024 and is based on Danielle Valentine's novel Delicate Condition, which explores themes of pregnancy, motherhood, murder, and birth.

How (and Where) to Watch the Friday the 13th Movies in Order

    Rory O'Connor

    Rory O'Connor

    JustWatch Editor

The original version of this article was written by Alexandra Kon and published in October, 2024.

Friday the 13th is widely considered to be one of the most iconic horror franchises to come out of the 1980s. With twelve features and counting, the Friday the 13th movies continue to stalk our cinema and TV screens with all the menace of their masked, silent and unkillable villain: Jason Voorhees. Whether it’s Halloween season or you just love a classic slasher, it’s rarely a bad time to curl up on the couch and watch Jason take out another group of unsuspecting teenagers.

In the following list, you’ll find out how to watch every movie so far in the Friday the 13th franchise in chronological order. Read on to learn more about each instalment and use the guide below to find out where to stream them all on services like AppleTV, Netflix, Prime Video and elsewhere.

    Friday the 13th (1980)

The 1980s were easily the most prolific time for the Friday the 13th franchise—a decade when Paramount studios churned them out almost annually. The first eight instalments were released between 1980 and 1989 and introduced audiences to an iconic new slasher in Jason Voorhees—although he didn’t arrive fully formed as the hockey mask wearing psychopath.

As anyone who saw the original Scream will likely remember, the killer in the first Friday the 13th isn’t Jason but his mother, Pamela, who’s actually out to avenge Jason’s death after he drowns in the lake while attending summer camp—which is, of course, bad news for the camp counsellors.

    Friday the 13th II (1981)

Released one year later, Friday the 13th Part II flipped the script by confirming that Jason never died, that he’s now fully grown, and that he’s out to avenge his mother’s death in the most gruesome ways imaginable—at least for the time.

This sequel set the gleefully gnarly tone for the series going forward—firstly by killing off Alice Hardy (the original film’s final girl) in the opening moments, before going on to make a killing at the box office.

    Friday the 13th III (1982)

It takes three years and three movies, but Jason Vorhees finally nails his iconic look in Friday the 13th Part III, picking up a hockey mask to hide his face after an early massacre of unlucky adolescents.

Again, for various reasons, the filmmakers chose not to continue on with the previous movie’s final girl, Ginny Field. Instead, Dana Kimmell’s Chris Higgins takes over where Field left off and ultimately gets one over on the franchise’s big bad—not that he ever stays dead for very long.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, like previous installments, starts directly after the events of the last movie. This one is far from the most inventive episode in the series—with Jason neatly going through another cycle of resurrection, rampage, and apparent death before the credits roll.

What it does have that the others don’t, however, is Corey Feldman. The star of such legendary ‘80s movies as The Goonies and The Burbs appears late on as Tommy Jarvis—a teenager who ends up being the last man standing.

    Friday the 13th (2009)

Watching the Friday the 13th movies in strictly chronological order is nearly identical to watching them by release order. The first four films remain the same, but the fifth is technically the 2009 remake, Friday the 13th—a movie that offers a new perspective on the first four instalments.

This remake of sorts was designed to give Jason a bit more backstory in the hopes of relaunching the franchise—which, as we all know, didn’t quite pan out. It was, however, written by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon—who recently collaborated with Sam Raimi on Send Help—so if you liked that one you might wanna check this out.

    Friday the 13th V: A New Beginning (1985)

By Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, the series had admittedly gone a bit off the rails—but if you’re invested in the franchise and don’t mind a little narrative insanity, you’ll probably have plenty of fun with it.

For A New Beginning, Tommy returns—now played by John Shepard—as a teenager who is haunted by Jason in his nightmares. This one takes place in an institution (similar to the one in Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors) and features a few cases of mistaken identity.

Friday the 13th VI: Jason Lives (1986)

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives is the sixth feature in the franchise and the third and final installment to center on Tommy Jarvis—who again is recast here, with Thom Matthews taking over as the grown up version of the character.

Credit to Jason Lives, the movie boasts an admirably crazy plot—in which Tommy returns to Crystal Lake to burn Jason’s remains in the hope of saving his sanity but inadvertently brings him back to life thanks to an unlucky lightning strike. You probably won’t see that in Scream 7.

Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood (1988)

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood has a surprisingly interesting origin story. First, the studio wanted to make a crossover with Nightmare on Elm Street (we will revisit this plan later in the list) but couldn’t quite pull it off. Instead, they settled on something akin to Jason vs. Carrie, pitting their monster up against a girl with telekinetic powers.

This gives the seventh instalment of the long-running franchises more of a supernatural vibe than previous instalments. It was also directed by John Carl Buechler, a special effects wizard responsible for bringing classics like Re-Animator and Troll to life—so if you’re a fan, you might be particularly keen to check this one out.

Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Although most of the films take place around the infamous Crystal Lake, the franchise occasionally allows Jason to rampage in other locales—which is never not fun. The first instalment to really explore this was Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan—in which (you guessed it) Jason stabs and slashes his way through a very 1989 looking New York City.

Following on from New Blood, Jason Takes Manhattan saw the franchise, for better and worse, becoming a good bit more self aware and taking a few more risks. Imagine Friday the 13th but through the lens of a movie like The Warriors and you’ll have a vague idea.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

After 1984’s The Final Chapter, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday was the second movie in the series to wrongly predict Vorhees’ ultimate demise. It came four years after Takes Manhattan—which was at that time the longest wait between movies.

That happened because New Line Pictures acquired the rights to the franchise. They then promptly decided to make the most insane movie in the series yet—one that sees Jason blown up with a grenade launcher in the opening scene, but then possess the coroner who eats his heart for some reason.

    Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

The penultimate film on our rundown is 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, which chronologically takes place after both Jason Goes to Hell and Freddy’s Dead—the sixth film in the Elm Street franchise. It also saw New Line achieve what Paramount had attempted to do back in 1988—ie. bringing the monsters of those two universes together for a showdown.

This crossover production—like Alien vs. Predator, which was released the following year—was lambasted by critics but made a decent chunk of change at the box office.

    Jason X (2002)

The final instalment in our chronological rundown is 2002’s Jason X, which takes place some 400 years in the future, where Jason is woken from a cryosleep in space. Yes, in space.

Directed by James Isaac (a special effects guru and creature maker who’d worked on Return of the Jedi and The Fly), Jason X has the inventive and playful energy of a B movie classic but sadly failed to acquire cult status or inspire much action at the box office. An interesting experiment all the same.

The V/H/S franchise first hit cinema screens in 2012 with the original V/H/S, an anthology of stand-alone short horror films all on the theme of “found footage” - characters either stumble across video tape or film it themselves, with bloody consequences. Since then it’s grown into one of modern horror’s most prolific franchises, with 2024’s V/H/S/Beyond the latest addition. Find out how to stream every V/H/S movie in the right order with our streaming guide, below.

You have a choice here: release order or in story/setting order? Every movie is pretty much independent of the others, so you could keep it simple and go with the order the films originally came out, but there are some links between them - enough to make switching it up worthwhile.

If chronological order is your preference, kick off with V/H/S/85 - a lot of the franchise’s films helpfully add the year they are set in at the end of the title - while being warned that, although good and gory, it’s a little lighter in tone than some of what you’ll see later on. After that you have two of the stronger entries in the canon to look forward to: V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99 both benefit from the 1990s video look making them extra spooky.

That brings you back to the first film to be released, V/H/S - the most popular segment of which was called Amateur Night, about a group of dudes whose plan for an evening of secretly filmed fun in a motel room ends in bloody terror, because their female companion is not at all what she seems. Fans liked it so much that the monster, Lilith (Hannah Fierman) later got her own movie, Siren, so cue that one up next. It really… fleshes out the story.

A similar process took place with V/H/S/2 - arguably the best film in the whole binge - and its story Slumber Party Alien Abduction. That became the basis for the stand-alone, feature-length Kids vs. Aliens, so place that next in your streaming schedule.

After that you are sliding messily down the home straight in the company of V/H/S/Viral, with its framing narrative featuring footage shot on smartphones and shared on social media that drives the people who watch it insane - developing the original movie’s idea of a stack of old tapes that has sinister powers. Finish off with V/H/S/Beyond, which brings the franchise up to date by including mockumentary and faked “found footage” among its themes, while also telling classic V/H/S tales about a UFO chaser and a distinctly unethical animal rights activist. Then turn off your screen and go to sleep - if you can…

With the arrival of Joker: Deux à Folie in cinemas, there’s a growing appetite for more dark dramas, gritty comic book adaptations and psychological thrillers. Read on to discover what to watch if you liked Joker 2 and where to stream them now.

The most significant film to revisit if you enjoyed Joker: Folie à Deux is Todd Phillips’ Joker from 2019. The psychological thriller introduced Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic comic book character, known in the film as Arthur Fleck, who is a failed clown and aspiring comedian who struggles with mental illness.

On a $70 million budget, the film grossed over $1 billion at the box office, becoming the first R-rated film to achieve that feat. It also became the first DC film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, while Phoenix won Best Actor and the film won Best Original Score.

These DC spin-offs are reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, which featured Heath Ledger in the iconic role as the Joker in 2008. As the second film in the franchise, The Dark Knight was a record-breaking success and became the highest-grossing superhero film of the time taking over $1 billion at the box office on a $185 million budget. It’s well regarded as one of the blueprints of modern superhero films and as one of the best films ever made.

More recently, DC has reintroduced a younger, grittier version of Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman in 2022. With Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, the film was a commercial success taking over $772 million at the box office and was nominated for three Academy Awards. There is also a spin-off series from this film, The Penguin, led by Colin Farrell, as another infamous Batman villain that is another worthwhile watch.

Outside of the superhero genre, there are other psychological thrillers that emulate the themes, energy and satirical horror evoked in Joker and Joker: Folie à Deux such as Mary Harron’s American Psycho, the 2014 Neo-noir thriller, Nightcrawler, The Vanishing and Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver.

Lady Gaga, who stars in the sequel as Joker’s love interest, Harley Quinn, also appears in the horror anthology series, American Horror Story in season five and six, which is another ideal series to stream after Joker 2.

Based on the ‘90s Good Luck Trolls dolls, Trolls is a movie franchise about cheerful creatures living in a harmonious world of song and dance. Since the release of the first movie in 2016, the DreamWorks Animation series has grown to include two additional feature films, a TV series, and even some holiday specials. Here is a quick breakdown of how to watch them all in the correct order.

    • Trolls (2016)
    • Trolls Holiday (2017)
    • Trolls: The Beat Goes On! (2018)
    • Trolls World Tour (2020)
    • Trolls: TrollsTopia (2020)
    • Trolls: Holiday in Harmony (2021)
    • Trolls: Trolls Band Together (2023)

The main voice cast of the Trolls franchise is led by Anna Kendrick, who plays Poppy, the leader of the trolls, and Justin Timberlake, who plays Branch, a troll who starts off extremely pessimistic but learns to embrace friendship and joy. Read on to discover more about each movie, special, and TV show and use the guide below to find out where to stream them on all on services like AppleTV, Netflix, Prime Video and elsewhere.

    Trolls (2016)

The first Trolls movie follows the ever-optimistic Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and her cautious, grumpy sidekick, Branch (Justin Timberlake), as they go on a mission to save their fellow trolls from the Bergens—creatures who believe they can only experience happiness by eating them. It’s a movie that younger family members will love, especially fans of animated adventures like The Smurfs and The Croods.

Released in 2016, the movie was a commercial success thanks in part to its colourful animation and boppy tunes—including Justin Timberlake’s hit song ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling!’ James Corden, Zooey Deschanel, Kenan Thompson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse round out the starry voice cast.

    Trolls World Tour (2020)

The 2020 sequel, Trolls World Tour, sees the troll world divided into different musical tribes, each one representing a unique musical genre—so if you appreciated the first movie and want to explore more of this universe, or enjoy stories where seemingly different groups must work together for a common cause, like Brave or How to Train your Dragon), this might be the one for you.

The drama is set in motion when the Rock Trolls, led by Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) decide to conquer the other realms. Faced with this new foe, Poppy and Branch make it their mission to unite the other tribes and fight back.

    Trolls Band Together (2023)

In the most recent movie in the Trolls universe, Trolls Band Together, it’s revealed that Branch used to be part of a boy band called ‘BroZone’. This group originally consisted of Branch and his four brothers—John Dory, Spruce, Clay and Floyd—but when the youngest of them is kidnapped, Branch and Poppy must team up once again to rescue him.

Released in 2023, Trolls Band Together might not be the best reviewed movie in the franchise but it features some incredible talent in the voice cast, including musicians and comedians like Kid Cudi, Eric Andre and Troy Sivan—so if you’re a fan of their music or their work on movies like Bad Trip and Don’t Look Up, you might get a kick out of hearing them here.

    Trolls TV Series & Specials

Alongside this trilogy of movies, there are also a number of Trolls TV series and specials that have helped to develop the Trolls universe—and that fans of the movies will surely enjoy. These additional stories feature original songs and explore new locations and different aspects of these beloved characters.

Trolls: The Beat Goes On! is a series consisting of 52 episodes that take place between the events of the first and second movies. In Trolls Holiday, which is set after the first movie, Poppy sets out to introduce the Bergens to the holiday spirit. Trolls: TrollsTopia is another 52-episode series that takes place afterTrolls World Tour and focuses on Poppy's attempts to unite even more of the Trolls tribes. Finally, Trolls: Holiday in Harmony sees Poppy and the gang once again attempting to spread the holiday spirit to different villages in the Trolls’ world.

Lady Gaga needs no introduction. The 13 time Grammy Award-winner has been named Time’s one of the 100 most influential people in the world twice, she’s sold over 170 million records worldwide and showcased her immeasurable talent onscreen too. Read on to discover where to watch the best Lady Gaga movies and TV shows streaming online in the United Kingdom.

Lady Gaga’s performances are world class, on and off-screen. Back in 2013, the actress made her big-screen debut in Machete Kills as La Camaleón alongside Sofia Vergara, Mel Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez and Cuba Gooding Jr. Though the star-studded cast action didn’t fare well at the box office, making only $17.5 million on a $20 million budget, it offered a glimpse of her exceptional acting talents in this supporting role.

Alongside this, Gaga has also made cameos as herself in films such as Muppets Most Wanted and lent her voice to series such as The Simpsons in “Lisa Goes Gaga”. Gaga went on to star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, before she made her debut in the horror anthology series, American Horror Story. In 2015, the actress stunned fans in season 5 titled Hotel as The Countess, before returning in 2016 for Season Six, Roanoke as a special guest to play Scáthach.

These mesmerising performances were followed by her most acclaimed role as Ally in Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born. The 2018 musical romantic drama, which was led by Cooper and Lady Gaga, earned Gaga the recognition of becoming the first woman in history to win an Academy Award for Best Actress, a Grammy for Song of the Year and Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture in one year.

The film went on to win four Grammys and grossed a staggering $436 million on a $36 million budget, a remarkable feat and without a doubt, Gaga’s greatest performance to date. Since then, Gaga has fronted the 2021 biographical crime drama House of Gucci, as Patrizia Reggiani, the matriarch of the renowned fashion family. Gaga received more nominations for her performance in this role, as the Ridley Scott film went onto gross $153 million on a $75 million budget.

One of her most anticipated roles is Gaga’s performance in the American musical psychological thriller, Joker: Folie à Deux. The sequel to 2019’s Joker, sees Gaga join the cast as Harley Quinn, Joker’s (Joaquin Phoenix) love interest in the film. After its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Joker: Folie à Deux has received positive reviews for its performances, musical numbers, costumes and design. It is certain to be another firm favourite amongst fans of Gaga’s work.

The Halloween movie franchise is one of the most iconic horror series in history. Created by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, it centres around masked serial killer Michael Myers. There have been many reboots and interpretations of the original Halloween stories over the years.

This guide includes details on the different Halloween franchise eras and streaming info on where to watch the Halloween movies in the UK.

    Origins and Early Films (1978-1989)

    • Halloween (1978)
    • Halloween II (1981)
    • Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
    • Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
    • Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

Horror fans around the world first met Michael Myers in the original 1978 Halloween movie. Directed by John Carpenter and produced by Debra Hill, the movie starred Jamie Lee Curtis as the iconic ‘final girl’ Laurie Strode and Donald Pleasance as Dr. Loomis. It was a huge commercial success and led the way for the numerous Halloween sequels over the years.

Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in Halloween II as she continued to hide from Michael Myers. Halloween III: Season of the Witch experimented with a different storyline without Michael Myers, but the film received poor reviews. For the fourth and fifth instalments, The Return of Michael Myers and The Revenge of Michael Myers, Halloween went back to its roots with a terrifying fight for survival as Michael Myers faces off against Laurie Strode’s daughter, Jamie Lloyd.

    The 1990s and Early 2000s Reboots (1995-2002)

    • Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
    • Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
    • Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

The 1990s brought a new twist to the Halloween movies with the release of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Fans were divided about a new storyline, titled the ‘Thorn Cult’, which was introduced to explain Michael Myers’ supernatural ability to stay alive. Donald Pleasance made his final appearance as Dr. Loomis in the movie before his death.

In 1998, Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, who is now a headmistress of a boarding school and hiding from Michael Myers. The film picks up after the events of Halloween II, ignoring the storylines of the previously released films.

Halloween: Resurrection introduces a modern spin to the series with a reality TV show concept where contestants spend the night in Michael’s childhood home. The movie was panned and is considered the end of the original Halloween timeline.

    Rob Zombie’s Reboots (2007-2009)

    • Halloween (2007)
    • Halloween II (2009)

Rob Zombie rebooted the Halloween franchise, directing two movies: Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009). They explored Michael Myers’ origin story, diving deep into his childhood and psychological state. Rob Zombie’s reimagining brought a fresh perspective to the franchise, but received mixed reviews amongst fans.

Modern Era and Blumhouse Revival (2018-present)

    • Halloween (2018)
    • Halloween Kills (2021)
    • Halloween Ends (2022)

Renowned horror movie production company Blumhouse Productions got involved with the Halloween franchise in 2018. Halloween, directed by David Gordon Green, is a direct continuation of the original 1978 movie. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode, with the film being a commercial and critical success. Laurie continues to deal with the trauma and lasting impact of Michael’s terror in Blumhouse’s Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

The Halloween movies are available to stream on a number of different platforms in the UK, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+. For information on where to watch all of the Halloween movies online, see the full details below.

Apartment 7A takes us back to New York in the 1960s, and to a plush old apartment building with some seriously creepy vibes. There’s a young performer’s stage career hanging in the balance, a kindly old couple whose offer of help might just come with some rather onerous conditions, and a steadily mounting sense of dread. Yes, Apartment 7A is a prequel to the 1968 psychological horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, adding to the TV and film canon spinning off from the movie. Find out how to watch the Rosemary Baby’s franchise in order with our streaming guide, below.

Although Apartment 7A is set before the events of Rosemary’s Baby, and so a chronological narrative binge would start with Natalie Erika James’s 2024 film, the aesthetic and tone of the story are very much taken from what director Roman Polanski created in 1968, so we recommend watching in order of release and beginning with Rosemary’s Baby itself. Mia Farrow is Rosemary Woodhouse, who with her aspiring actor husband Guy moves into the grand old Bamford apartment block. There, the Woodhouses are befriended by the elderly couple in a neighbouring flat - soon, Guy’s career takes off, Rosemary is pregnant and all is well. But Rosemary starts to see and hear things that make her think the devil is on her tail…

A masterpiece of tension and suggestion, the film works as a comment on the never-ending struggle for domestic perfection, the alienating physical experience of pregnancy and the way women expecting a child have to deal with all sorts of people interfering in the process - but it’s mainly just a good old-fashioned horror thriller, and viewers wanted to know what happened next. They got an answer in 1976 in the straightforwardly titled Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby.

This TV movie follows the eight-year-old, and then 20 years later, the adult version of the baby Rosemary has at the end of the first film. It is the story of someone trying, through various deathly misadventures, to escape his destiny as a child of Satan - but the coven has operatives everywhere. Ruth Gordon, who memorably played the sinister Minnie Castavet in the original, reprises her role.

Then there’s the TV remake of Rosemary’s Baby, shown across two episodes in 2014. Transplanting the story from New York to Paris and making numerous small changes, it nevertheless tells essentially the same tale: Zoe Saldana is Rosemary, who comes to suspect that something is wrong with her unborn baby, her husband (Patrick J Adams) and their new friends the Castevets (Carole Bouquet and Jason Isaacs). It’s a more overtly horror-themed, gory take.

And so to Apartment 7A. When Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie was adapted into a horror film in 1976, it achieved instant iconic status. From the deranged, fanatic energy of Carrie’s religious mother, to the classic scene of a blood-covered prom queen wreaking havoc at the school dance, the film succeeded in capturing the very real feelings of shame from teenage bullying and pain from a twisted parent-child relationship, and mixing them with the horror of unbridled vengeance.

Find out how to watch Carrie and the other Carrie movies, and see where you can stream each instalment below!

How to watch the Carrie movies in order

Director Brian De Palma and screenwriter Lawrence D Cohen adapted Stephen King's book into 1976’s film Carrie. The film stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, an awkward and unpopular teenager with latent telekinetic abilities who is viciously bullied at school after she mistakenly believes she is dying after she first gets her period. Piper Laurie plays her deranged religious mother, Margaret, who sees everything through the lens of sin and repentance. When Carrie is invited to the prom under false pretences, her powers are unleashed to devastating effect as she takes vengeance on her peers.

After De Palma’s iconic adaptation, no director dared approach the material for another 20 years. However, in 1999, director Katt Shea made a sequel focusing on Carrie’s half-sister, Rachel. Rachel also possesses telekinetic powers that she winds up using for bloody revenge.

Check out all of the Carrie movies in order of release:

    • Carrie (1976)
    • The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999)
    • Carrie (2002)
    • Carrie (2013)

The following two instalments are remakes of the original film rather than sequels. If you are trying to watch the Carrie movies in order, the best approach would therefore be in order of release.

In 2002, Bryan Fuller (known for creating the series Hannibal) wrote a retelling of King’s novel Carrie, with David Carson as director. While the film was not well received, critics and fans praised Angela Bettis' performance as Carrie.

In 2013, director Kimberly Peirce (known for Boys Don’t Cry) made her attempt at retelling the story. While the film was slightly better received than Fuller’s, and was meant to adapt the story for a more modern audience, critics and fans widely agree that the original still reigns supreme as the ultimate Carrie film for the ages.

After Matt Reeves’ The Batman introduced audiences to the awkward but ambitious gangster Oz Cobb in 2022, it was only a short matter of time before HBO announced a spinoff series exploring the character. Rendered completely unrecognisable due to layers of prosthetics and a thick New York City accent, Cobb (aka The Penguin) is played by Irish actor Colin Farrell, who reprised the role in the Penguin series released in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW on September 20, 2024.

The series takes a gritty, realistic look at the rise of one of Batman’s most notorious villains, The Penguin, as he vies for mob power against the psychotic Sofia Falcone in Gotham. The series takes after several iconic gangster films, and shares many compelling elements with a variety of movies and TV shows across genres. Take a look at our list of movies and TV series like The Penguin, and find out where you can watch them below!

    The Batman - Movie

The Batman from 2022 takes place in the same universe as Max’s The Penguin. It is the first time Colin Farrell’s iteration of the character appears on screen, and acts as an introduction to Matt Reeves’ vision of the Batman. The film’s dark and realistic tone transfers perfectly into The Penguin series — on which Reeves acted as a writing and creative supervisor — and takes place one week after the events of The Batman.

    The Sopranos - TV Series

The Penguin is nothing if not a gangster series, and what better modern gangster series is there than HBO’s iconic The Sopranos? Starring James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, the series follows Tony’s reign as a New Jersey mob boss trying to balance his family life with his illicit work activities — all while attending therapy for an anxiety disorder. In addition, like Tony Soprano, Oz Cobb has a painful relationship with his mother that dominates much of his psychology.

    Luke Cage - TV Series

This Marvel TV series is part of their collaboration with Netflix that includes fellow superhero ‘Defenders’ Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, in addition to The Punisher. Luke Cage is a super strong vigilante with bulletproof skin who uses his powers to protect the inhabitants of Harlem. The first season of Luke Cage is especially similar to The Penguin, as much of it revolves around the Paradise nightclub (similar to the Iceberg lounge) where the gangster Cornell ‘Cottonmouth’ Stokes (Mahershala Ali) runs the show.

    Gotham - TV Series

Warner Bros Television’s DC TV series Gotham ran between 2014 and 2019. The series also takes place within the Batman universe, focusing on a young Detective Gordon as he takes on his first cases at the Gotham Police Department. While the series is structured somewhat like a procedural, the settings and characters do vary throughout the seasons. Oswald Cobblepot also features throughout as a low-level gangster rising through the ranks who causes problems for Gordon. While the series’ tone is much less gritty and realistic than The Penguin, if you love all things Batman and want to see another iteration of the Penguin (played by a sly Robin Lord Taylor), make sure to check out Gotham.

    Goodfellas - Movie

Delving back into the purely organised crime side of The Penguin, Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas is a must-watch for any fan of the genre. The iconic gangster film released in 1990 stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci as three friends and associates trying to keep their heads above water as they navigate the mob scene in 1970s New York City. As one of the most influential films in the mob crime genre, Goodfellas had a huge influence on The Penguin, including on plot structure, character development, and the overall visual aesthetic.

    Peaky Blinders - TV Series

Continuing with the gangster theme, Peaky Blinders is one of the best in the television genre. With six seasons airing from 2013 to 2022, Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders stars Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders street gang. His ambition drives him to seek ever more power, starting in Birmingham in 1919 after the first World War through to the end of 1933. Although it's a period crime drama, its storytelling, gritty characters, graphic violence, and political intrigue make it a compelling watch for any fan of The Penguin.

    Griselda - TV Series

Despite most of the entries on this list selling the idea that only men can be vicious mob bosses, they’d be given a run for their money by Griselda. This 2024 Netflix series starring Sofia Vergara is based on the true story of Griselda Blanco, an infamous Colombian drug lord who dominated the narcotrafficking scene in Miami in the 1980s. This fast-paced, high-budget series features an Emmy-nominated performance by Vergara and explores the consequences of seeking power at all costs.

    Gomorrah - TV Series

This Italian crime drama series ran for five seasons between 2014 and 2021. Based on investigative journalist Roberto Saviano’s novel of the same name, the fictional series follows the power struggle that breaks out in the Camorra criminal organisation in Naples between the young guard, the old guard, and their rivals. This series, above all others, seeks to destroy any attempt to glorify the mob and highlights the real-life results of organised crime’s chronic grip on a whole city — and even a country.

    The Dark Knight - Movie

Diving back into Batman lore, 2008’s The Dark Knight is perhaps the most beloved of all Batman movies. Although the film features another iconic Batman villain, The Joker (played by Heath Ledger), Christopher Nolan’s film succeeded in bringing a realistic feel to the franchise that had previously been depicted in mostly campy style. If you’re in the mood for an excellent Batman film featuring brilliant performances, unhinged violence, and gritty drama, The Dark Knight is the film for you.

    Narcos - TV Series

Narcos is a brilliant Spanish-language Netflix series that spanned three seasons airing between 2015 and 2017. Like Griselda, the series focuses on a notorious real-life Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar. As the leader of the Medellín Cartel, Escobar dominated the drug trade in the 1980s to the early ‘90s, and the series follows his rise to power even as he plays an increasingly dangerous game of cat and mouse with the CIA. Like The Penguin, Narcos focuses on the complex character of the mob boss and the consequences of their actions.

The 10 Best Colin Farrell Movies, Ranked - and How to Stream Them

    Jack Seale

Colin Farrell could have got by on his matinee-idol looks, churning out action movies and romantic comedies and enjoying a pleasantly lucrative cinema career. Actors like that tend to toss in the odd arthouse hit or experimental cameo role to see off accusations of typecasting. In the case of Colin Farrell, the interesting films have gradually replaced the mainstream ones, but he has a knack for starring in boundary-pushing movies that still do well at the box office. See below for our pick of the ten best Colin Farrell films, and where to stream them.

Colin Farrell’s best early work was in collaboration with the director Joel Schumacher. In Tigerland, Farrell is a man of contrasts as an anti-war protestor who is drafted to fight in Vietnam and finds, at the training camp that gives the film its name, that he is a gifted soldier and leader of men. Farrell and Schumacher reunited for Phone Booth, a high-concept thriller that relies on Farrell constantly being on screen as an adulterous man threatened by an unseen sniper. In between those, Farrell cemented his Hollywood status with a crucial supporting role in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report.

Now in the big time, Farrell took a while to find his rhythm as a proper film star: the blockbusters he appeared in during the early 2000s are hit and miss. Signs of a more interesting actor started to emerge in Oliver Stone’s historical epic Alexander, and when Farrell took a lead role in provocative romantic drama The New World, directed by arthouse legend Terrence Malick, as a colonial settler helping to establish Jamestown, Virginia. Then he shone in Michael Mann’s successful reboot of the cult TV series Miami Vice, before finding the director with whom Farrell would do his best work: Martin McDonagh.

McDonagh’s first movie was In Bruges, a fantastic thriller soaked in the blackest comedy. As a hitman riven with guilt at a job gone wrong, Farrell gives his definitive performance: funny and sexy when required, but with a dark vulnerability. Those qualities had been present before but the acclaim for In Bruges crystallised what sort of actor Farrell could be - he’s never looked back.

Collaborations with daring Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos were fruitful, notably The Lobster, in which Farrell’s alpha-male urges are curbed entirely as he plays a cuckolded man sent to a hotel where singletons are forced to pair up. Farrell also stuck with Martin McDonagh and In Bruges co-star Brendan Gleeson, scoring a huge critical hit with the deceptively simple comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, with Farrell as a naive man who cannot understand why his best friend has tired of him.

Even his superhero movies are a cut above: Colin Farrell is now starring in the TV series The Penguin, having revealed the damaged man inside the Gotham City villain in the 2022 movie The Batman.

Where to watch the best Colin Farrell movies online

As The Penguin reaches the small screen, you’ll want to stream The Batman to remind yourself of how Farrell got started in the role. For those wanting to find out where to watch the other movies on our list of Colin Farrell’s ten best, see below.

Since its release in 1973, The Exorcist has become widely recognised as one of the most iconic films in horror history. The darkly foreboding storytelling, blasphemous nature of its content, and shocking moments of demonic evil turned heads (so to speak) when it was first released and continues to inspire filmmakers to this day.

Check out the JustWatch guide to all of The Exorcist films in order and find out how (and where) you can stream them below!

The first Exorcist film was based on William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel of the same name. It introduced audiences to the 12-year old Regan MacNeil, played by Linda Blair, who becomes possessed by an ancient Assyrian demon known as Pazuzu. Doctors and psychologists are baffled by the case, and in her desperation Regan’s mother turns to two Catholic priests — Father Damien Karras and Father Lankester Merrin — to help exorcise the demon.

Watch The Exorcist Movies in Order of Release

Since the original film’s release in 1973, there have been an additional five instalments and a sixth on the way with 2025’s The Exorcist: Deceiver. Here’s how to watch all of The Exorcist movies in order of release:

    • The Exorcist (1973)
    • Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)
    • The Exorcist III (1990)
    • Exorcist: The Beginning (2004)
    • Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist (2005)
    • The Exorcist: Believer (2023)
    • The Exorcist: Deceiver (2025)

Watch The Exorcist Movies in Chronological Order

If you want to watch all of The Exorcist movies following the series of events starting from the demon Pazuzu’s original discovery, check out the list below to find out how to watch all the movies in chronological order. The first film, 2005’s Dominion, is an alternate prequel to 2004’s The Beginning. Dominion was originally commissioned with Paul Schrader at the helm, but the studio was dissatisfied with the end product and rehashed it with Renny Harlin to create Beginning. However, after Beginning performed poorly at the box office, the studio later released Schrader’s cut.

    • Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist
    • Exorcist: The Beginning
    • The Exorcist
    • Exorcist II: The Heretic
    • The Exorcist III
    • The Exorcist: Believer
    • The Exorcist: Deceiver

The Exorcist II was released as a direct sequel to the original, and takes place four years after the events of The Exorcist. However, the film was poorly received so its sequel, Exorcist III, was made without much allusion to the second film, and could therefore be watched directly after the first. Exorcist III takes place some 15 years after the events of the original Exorcist.

In 2023, director David Gordon Green released The Exorcist: Believer, which he maintained was a direct sequel to the original Exorcist. The story takes place some 30 years after the original, and is expected to spawn a trilogy. The second instalment, The Exorcist: Deceiver, is set to be released in 2025.

Some of his better known live-action features include Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, and Planet of the Apes. Michael Keaton is one of the most prominent American actors to come out of the late 1960s and remains active today. Known for his eccentric roles across a range of genres, Keaton is perhaps most famous for his performance as Beetlejuice in Tim Burton’s 1988 classic comedy about a trickster poltergeist. And now, some 36 years later, Keaton and Burton are teaming up again to make a sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, set to premiere on September 6, 2024.

In anticipation of Keaton’s return to his most iconic role, now is the perfect time to check out some of his best performances to date, from his stint as Batman to his role in the Oscar-winning Birdman. Take a look at the best Michael Keaton movies, and find out how and where you can stream them all below!

    Beetlejuice

Tim Burton’s iconic dark comedy from 1988 follows the story of a ghost couple whose afterlives are disrupted by a noisy living family who have moved into their house. Desperate to get rid of them, the couple (played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) hire a rambunctious poltergeist named Beetlejuice (Keaton) to drive them out. Other cast members include Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, and Jeffrey Jones.

    Birdman

Michael Keaton was nominated for Best Actor in 2015 for his role in Birdman, in which he plays a washed-up Hollywood actor who used to play superheroes in films. In order to try and resuscitate his career and prove he’s a real artist, he decides to take on an ambitious role in a Broadway production. The film, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, also stars Edward Norton, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts, among others.

    Jackie Brown

This 1997 Quentin Tarantino crime drama is the director’s one and only adapted screenplay, based on Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard. The film tells the story of Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), a flight attendant with a criminal past. When she gets caught by law enforcement for smuggling, she has to turn into an informant while trying to survive to tell the tale. Michael Keaton plays Ray Nicolette, one of the main ATF agents working with the police.

    Spotlight

Spotlight won the Best Picture Oscar at the 2016 Academy Awards for its depiction of the true story of the The Boston Globe journalists who investigated and broke the story of widespread and rampant sexual abuse being covered up by the Catholic Church. Michael Keaton plays Walter ‘Robby’ Robinson, the head of the team of investigative journalists.

    Batman

In 1989, Michael Keaton and director Tim Burton teamed up again after Beetlejuice to make a very different movie: Batman. With Keaton in the starring role as Bruce Wayne (aka Batman), the film is one of the better Batman films to come from the late 80s/early 90s phases, and sees Batman take on Jack Nicholson's iconic Joker.

    Pacific Heights

John Schlesinger’s 1990 psychological thriller Pacific Heights stars Michael Keaton as a malicious con artist who moves into a San Francisco couple’s newly bought housing complex and begins to wreak havoc on their lives. The film demonstrates Keaton’s more deranged side, allowing him to experiment with a darker role. Pacific Heights also stars Melanie Griffith and Matthew Modine.

    Spider-Man: Homecoming

2017’s Spider-Man addition, Homecoming, stars Tom Holland in the role of the webslinger, and Michael Keaton as the villain Adrian Toomes (aka Vulture). After Spider-Man returns home from fighting alongside the Avengers, he, under the tutelage of Tony Star (aka Iron Man) continues to hone his skills as the Spider-Man — all of which is put to the test when the evil Vulture comes on the scene.

    The Paper

Ron Howard’s 1994 comedy-drama The Paper sees Michael Keaton return to the newsroom as a journalist hot on the story of a police cover-up after two businessmen were found murdered. Starring Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Randy Quaid, and Robert Duvall, The Paper goes through the fast-paced 24 hours before the story breaks.

    Knox Goes Away

In this 2024 film, Michael Keaton takes on the role of director in addition to playing the main character. The film sees him play an ex contract killer who is diagnosed with rapidly deteriorating dementia. With limited time, he takes the opportunity to redeem himself when his desperate and estranged son shows up on his doorstep looking for help.

    Night Shift

This 1982 comedy directed by Ron Howard first put Michael Keaton on the map as a comedic actor. The film stars Keaton and Henry Winkler as two night shift employees at the morgue. Keaton’s Bill is always finding ways to make some quick cash, and he convinces Winkler’s Chuck to convert the morgue into a brothel at night in order to also help out Belinda, Chuck’s sex worker neighbor.

How to Watch the Planet of the Apes in Chronological Order

If you’re keen to watch the Planet of the Apes movies in chronological order, we recommend starting with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Officially, it is a prequel/origin story for Caesar (the chimp who leads the original rebellion against the humans), and leads into Dawn, War, and finally Kingdom (some 300 years later). Be warned that the franchise suffers from countless continuity issues, so watching it in chronological order might prove more trouble than it’s worth!

How to Watch the Rebooted Planet of the Apes Movies in Order:

    • 2019? - Rise of the Planet of the Apes
    • 2029 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
    • 2031 - War for the Planet of the Apes
    • 2328 - Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

10 TV Shows Like Squid Game (and Where to Watch Them)

    Alexandra Kon

    JustWatch Editor

Netflix’s spectacular South Korean series Squid Game dominated screens around the world in 2021, becoming the platform’s most-watched TV show to date. With its themes of class warfare, violence, and emotional drama, the first season of Squid Game united audiences around the world in cheering on Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun as he barely made it through the deadly game show — only to sign up for more.

With Netflix finally releasing the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game on December 26, 2024, there’s still some time to kill (so to speak) before we can feast our eyes on the next chapter. But if you’re looking for other TV shows like Squid Game to watch in the meantime, check out our selection and find out where to stream them all below!

    Squid Game: The Challenge

Squid Game: The Challenge is a 2023 reality competition series inspired by the fictional Netflix show. Also featuring 456 players, The Challenge takes competitors through many similar games to Squid Game — although fortunately it doesn’t eliminate the players by killing them. If you’re looking for a series with high-stakes competitions that also features the same costumes and aesthetic to Squid Game, make sure to check out The Challenge.

    Alice in Borderland

This ongoing Japanese Netflix series from 2020 follows the story of Arisu, an obsessive gamer who finds himself thrown into a post-apocalyptic version of Tokyo where he and a group of others must compete in perilous games to survive. If you loved the games and high-stakes competition of Squid Game, make sure to watch Alice in Borderland.

    3%

3% is a Brazilian Netflix series spanning four seasons that aired between 2016 and 2019. The series takes place in an unspecified near future in Brazil, where impoverished young people from the “Inland” are recruited to compete in something called “The Process”. If they succeed in “The Process”, they are allowed to live in the wealthy “Offshore” society — however, only 3% manage to make it through the deadly games. If you’re looking for a series like Squid Game that explores themes of class warfare in the context of a deadly competition to get to the top, make sure to watch 3%.

    The 8 Show

This 2024 South Korean Netflix series that sees eight desperate strangers recruited to participate in a competition in which they are locked in a building together; the longer they stay, the more money they make — but in order to stay longer, they have to figure out how to put more time on the clock before time runs out. To make matters worse — or more entertaining for the viewers — they find out that some participants earn more than others, fueling class conflict that causes the competitors to turn against each other.

If you want a show like Squid Game that has an even more realistic bent, social satire, and even some comedy, make sure you check out The 8 Show.

    Panic

The American teen drama unfortunately only lasted one season, but is still worth a watch if you are looking to see people compete in deadly games for a massive cash prize. Panic sees a group of recent high school graduates trying to escape their small Texas town called Carp by engaging in a yearly competition — although this year the rules have changed and they have to decide if they’re willing to put it all on the line to get out.

    Death’s Game

Death’s Game is a South Korean fantasy-thriller series from 2023. The series follows the story of Choi Yee-jae, a young man who commits suicide after failing to find a job for over seven years. But once dead, he comes face to face with Death — who is none too pleased with his choice and decides to punish him by making him reincarnate and die twelve times before sending him to hell. But as Choi begins living other lives, he realises he can cheat death by staying alive.

    Black Mirror

Black Mirror is a British anthology series created by Charlie Brooker. In many ways, Squid Game could very well be an episode of Black Mirror, because it explores similar themes of social commentary, dystopian, hyper-capitalist realities, and class warfare. While Black Mirror’s focus is often more on the role of technology’s impact on society, the series is very much in keeping with the shock value Squid Game offers, in addition to the thought-provoking social commentary.

    All of Us Are Dead

All of Us Are Dead is a South Korean 2022 zombie-horror that is also a coming-of-age story mixed together in one series. The series follows the events after a high school science teacher accidentally sets off a zombie apocalypse, causing the students trapped inside the school to have to band together to fight for their survival. Although All of Us Are Dead doesn’t feature a competition as a key plot point, the high-stakes fight for survival mixed with the escalating tensions and unclear outcomes make it quite similar in vibe to Squid Game.

    And Then There Were None

Based on Agatha Christie’s 1939 novel of the same name, And Then There Were None was adapted in 2015 by the BBC into a limited television series. The series follows the story of eight strangers who are invited to a remote island off the coast of Devon, England, where they are slowly murdered one by one as punishment for their past crimes. Although And Then There Were None doesn’t share Squid Games competition aspect, it is similar in picking apart themes of justice and injustice in the confines of a space from which there is no escape.

    Hellbound

This 2021 South Korean Netflix series incorporates dark supernatural fantasy elements into a story of injustice and power. The series takes place in a world in which a being known as an ‘angel’ begins to appear, issuing ‘decrees’ that predict the immediate or future condemnation of someone to hell. In something called a ‘demonstration’, the condemned person is destroyed by three monsters before their soul is dragged to hell. Amidst the chaos, religious groups  New Truth Society and Arrowhead fight for power while playing off of people’s fears. Like Squid Game, Hellbound deals with themes of power, injustice, and the struggle to survive.

10 Movies to Watch if You Love The 'Fast & Furious' Franchise

    Alexandra Kon

    Alexandra Kon

    JustWatch Editor

The Fast & Furious franchise is one of the most successful action series of all time. With 10 instalments (and the spinoff) released over the last three decades, the franchise has made its cultural mark blending high-octane storytelling with deep bonds built on and off the screen — reminding us that friends can become family. If you love the Fast & Furious film series and want to find similar movies to watch online, we've got you covered with this streaming guide! Here we'll share ten movies you absolutely need to watch if you can't get enough of the Fast franchise — and show you where to watch them on UK streaming services.

    1. The Italian Job

Rebooting a British classic for a mid-2000s audience, The Italian Job is a heist film starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Mos Def, and the Fast and Furious franchise's very own Jason Statham. During a heist, the team led by Charlie (Wahlberg) is devastatingly betrayed by one of their own, Steve (Norton). Years later, the remaining team members and some new ones assemble to seek revenge.

I probably don't need to explain the similarities between The Italian Job and the Fast and Furious franchise; It's quite likely that the former was even made due to the popularity of The Fast and the Furious in 2001. The movie is by no means remembered as a classic, but if you love the high-octane action sequences of the Fast franchise — and plenty of characters with strong, opposing opinions — you’ll appreciate The Italian Job, especially for the updated recreation of the original's mini-cooper chase scene. The Italian Job features some top banter from global stars, and centres the camaraderie and loyalty of the team members as an important driving force. You could even say they're like family.

Best car: The electric-powered MINI Coopers, of course.

    2. Baby Driver

Baby Driver is a 2017 action-heist film starring Ansel Elgort, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Lily James, and Kevin Spacey. Directed by Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright, the film focuses on Baby (Elgort), a getaway driver who uses a constant stream of music to drown out his tinnitus. Although Baby wants out of the game, he’s got to do one final job that proves more complicated than he thought.

Like all of the Fast & Furious movies, Baby Driver features some killer driving scenes as Baby shows off his moves while getting his team members out of danger. What separates this movie from the rest is the use of music, which adds a lot of character to the film's chase scenes in a way only Edgar Wright can do.

Best car: A red 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

    3. The Transporter

If you love the Fast and Furious franchise, you're probably a huge fan of Jason Statham, otherwise known as "The Stath". So it's incredibly easy to recommend The Transporter as the next addition to your watchlist. Released in 2002, The Transporter follows Frank Martin, an ex-Special Forces operator turned mercenary transporter for crime bosses, no questions asked. But things get complicated after he is hired to kidnap the daughter of a dangerous Chinese crime lord.

This is much grittier and raw than most of the Fast franchise, making it more comparable to The Fast and the Furious than anything else. Statham and Taiwanese star Shu Qi have pretty good on-screen chemistry and there's a brilliantly comedic fight scenes that will go down as one of The Stath's best (and certainly the oiliest) action set pieces ever.

    Best car: Frank Martin's BMW 750iL (E38).

    4. Death Race

We're going all-in on Jason Statham on this list, and next up is the actor's 2008 action-thriller, Death Race. Jut like The Italian Job, Death Race is actually a remake of a cult classic. Although it doesn't bear much resemblance, it's inspired by the 1975 film Death Race 2000, which is another must-see film for car enthusiasts (although it might be a little too offbeat for mainstream audiences). The follow up, however, is perfect for fans of huge, high-adrenaline blockbusters like The Fast and the Furious.

Directed by Paul WS Anderson, Death Race follows a champion speedway racer who is framed for murder and imprisoned on Terminal Island. He's given a choice; Either compete in a vicious driving competition known as the Death Race for his freedom or stay behind bars for life. It takes place in a cruel dystopian world, so anyone who loves the more outlandish Fast and Furious movies, as well as movies like Mad Max: Fury Road, will likely enjoy the sci-fi intensity of Death Race.

Best car: A heavily modified 2006 Ford Mustang GT.

    5. Need for Speed

Need for Speed is a 2014 crime-action film starring Aaron Paul, best known for playing Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad. Paul plays Tobey Marshall, a race car driver who, struggling to make ends meet, reluctantly teams up with the shadowy crime boss Dino Brewster for some extra cash. After Dino frames Tobey for a crime he did not commit and he’s put in prison for two years. When he is released, he finds out the only way to get his just revenge is to beat Dino in a race.

Featuring high-stakes car racing, adrenaline-pumping chase scenes, and the emotional impacts of betrayal and revenge, Need for Speed isn’t a movie to skip if you love the Fast & Furious franchise. While it was panned by critics and won't be that memorable to general audiences, it's a good addition to your watchlist if you're a gearhead.

Best car: Either the Koenigsegg Agera R or the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport.

    6. Rush Hour

Now for something a bit different. Rush Hour is an iconic buddy-cop action-comedy starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as an unlikely duo of misfits trying to solve a kidnapping. Detective Inspector Lee (Chan) is sent from Hong Kong to Los Angeles to find the kidnapped daughter of a Chinese diplomat, but when the FBI refuses to get involved, Lee ends up forced to work with Detective James Carter of the LAPD. The two characters are so much fun to watch, with Jackie Chan playing a straight-edge cop while Tucker has fun as the (much) more relaxed detective. What works really well is how both characters are dismissed by everyone around them, giving them no choice but to form their unlikely friendly through hilarious hardships. The plot — which cleverly uses the Handover of Hong Kong — is centered around cultural differences, Jackie Chan's incredible action choreography, and Tucker's undeniable charisma. While this isn't the most obvious pick for fans of the Fast & Furious, it's worth checking out if you enjoy the franchise's more comedic characters.

Best car: A 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C3 which, admittedly, doesn't get much screen time.

    7. Speed

If Rush Hour is too comedic and light-hearted for you, here's a movie that is notorious for its intensity instead. Speed is a 1994 action-thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. After an extortionist bomber in Los Angeles attaches a bomb to a city bus that activates when the bus goes over 50 MPH and will detonate if it goes below 50 MPH, it’s down to Officer Jack Traven and his team to clear a path for the bus to keep going will concocting a plan to fool the extortionist so they can offload the passengers.

The concept of Speed is simple, it's actually genius. Just as the bus isn't allowed to drop below a certain speed, the film itself is beholden to a constantly fast-paced and tense atmosphere. This high-octane thriller takes the tension up a notch, even compared to many of the Fast & Furious movies, so you should only watch it if you're specifically looking for a thrill — with just a little bit of romance.

Best car: It has to be the GM New Look Transit Bus.

    8. Taxi

If you are open to watching a movie with subtitles,Taxi is a French-language movie that has some similarities to the first Fast and Furious movie; It centers on low-level crime and street gangs in Marseille, providing plenty of fast-paced chases. Starring Samy Naceri, Frédéric Diefenthal and Marion Cotillard — the award-winning French actress who many will recognize from Christopher Nolan's Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

A hapless police inspector (Diefenthal) enlists the help of a skilled taxi driver (Naceri) in tracking down a notorious German gang. Expect multi-vehicle collisions, Grand Prix racing, and high-octane chase scenes, because Taxi is without a doubt worth a watch if you love the Fast franchise. It's also the first movie in the Taxi franchise, which also includes four sequels.

Best car: A modified Peugeot 406.

    9. Gran Turismo

The newest movie on his list is Gran Turismo, the 2023 biographical sports-drama directed by Neill Blomkamp and starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, and Orlando Bloom. It's based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (Madekwe), a young teenager who breaks into the professional race car driving scene despite only having raced in the video game Gran Turismo. With the help of his trailer, former race car driver Jack Salter (Harbour), and creator of the GT Academy, Danny Cox (Bloom), Jann makes his way to the top of the game despite the odds.

If you love the Fast & Furious franchise for its more upbeat and wholesome dimensions — plus the fast cars — make sure to check out Gran Turismo. Its focus is all about beating the odds and inspiring us to take risks for our dreams. It's also a good pick if you liked Need for Speed, as both movie are based on (or somehow connected to) popular racing video games.

Best car: The Ligier JS P2. Although there are lots to choose from here.

    Gone in 60 Seconds

If you loved the early 2000s vibe from the very first Fast and Furious movie, Gone in 60 Seconds might be the right pick for you. This is a 2000 film with an impressive all-star cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert Duvall, Vinnie Jones, and Will Patton. After Randall ‘Memphis’ Raines’ brother is held for ransom by a violent crime lord, he must reassume his identity as the most successful car thief in California for one night in order to steal 50 luxury cars. In order to carry out this almost impossible mission, he resembles his old team to help him as they evade competition and law enforcement before it’s too late to save his brother.

If you love cars as much as Dom Toretto, make sure to check out Gone in 60 Seconds for the luxury cars on display alone. But stick around also for the wild Nicolas Cage performance and to see the badass Angelina Jolie in action. Like Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, they make a surprisingly good on-screen duo.

Best car: A silver-and-black 1967 Shelby GT500 (which is a tribute to the 1971/73 Mustang from the original 1974 film).

Ever since The Avengers debuted back in 2012, there’s been an appetite to see superheroes assemble on-screen. With major action sequences against an intergalactic threat, this film kick-started the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) into the billion dollar empire it is today. Read on to discover more films that are like The Avengers and where to stream them!

This is not the only time that superheroes have worked together to defeat a power-hungry villain. Before the Avengers, Marvel had a host of team-ups that saw comic book characters come to life in live-action franchises such as Fantastic Four and X-Men.

Bryan Singer was at the helm of initiating the X-Men franchise with the 2000 film of the same name, starring Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and James Marsden. The film explores this world of conflict where super-powered mutants are shunned and hunted by humans for their unique abilities. Magneto is trying to convince two isolated mutants of a different path to survive with humankind, as Professor Xavier tries to bridge the gap between the two species to live in harmony.

Similar to The Avengers, it brings together a group of skilled mutants to use their powers to defeat the evil in their world. X-Men remains one of the highest grossing films of that year, and garnered over $293 million at the worldwide box office, before it became an entire franchise of films and TV shows.

In 2005, Tim Story’s Fantastic Four burst onto the scene fronted by Jessica Alba, Iona Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans (yes, prior to Captain America he went by another superhero alter ego). The film follows the origin story of these four titular leads, who are exposed to cosmic rays on a space station and find themselves with distinctive abilities.

The film grossed over $333 million at the box office and even spawned a sequel, Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. As there’s a reboot scheduled to be released in 2025, it’s the perfect time to revisit this super-science team.

DC have also released a host of gripping live-action superhero movies such as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy as well as the Justice League. After a strong start with Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan crafted one of the greatest superhero movies of all time in 2008’s The Dark Knight.

Fronted by Christian Bale as the caped crusader himself, Batman is faced with his ultimate nemesis, The Joker (Heath Ledger) who is tormenting Gotham with his wicked criminal schemes. It opened to wide-spread critical and commercial success and became the highest-grossing superhero film and the fourth-highest grossing film at that time. It led to the 2012 sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, which is another excellent choice for fans of The Avengers.

Batman teams up with Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) to attempt to defeat another supervillain, Bane (Tom Hardy). The sequel went onto gross over $1 billion at the box office and became one of the highest grossing films of that time.

Outside of this, there are super films such as The Incredibles, Despicable Me 2, Spider-Man 2 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves that offer an alternative spin on the hero versus villain saga for you to enjoy.

10 Movies Like Pirates of the Caribbean (and Where to Watch Them)

This article has been updated by Rory O'Connor.

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most beloved Disney franchises to come out of the early 2000s. Based on the Disneyland ride of the same name, the five film saga follows the story of Captain Jack Sparrow, a notorious pirate known for his eccentric mannerisms, perpetual tipsiness, and sharp instincts, as he sails the Caribbean seas on both noble and distinctly ignoble quests. Taking place in a fantasy 18th century, the Pirates films offered audiences a uniquely fun and swashbuckling adventure from 2003 to 2017.

If you’ve watched the Pirates movies a hundred times, however, and are looking for something in a similar vein, we’ve got you covered. The following list—which I’ve arranged in no particular order—contains modern classics and older gems, yet every title comes with the promise of adventure, some romance, and plenty of lovely period detail. Read on to discover more and use the guide below to find out where to stream them on services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, ITVX, and elsewhere.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

The Indiana Jones franchise, like Pirates of the Caribbean, is made up of five films. Created by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, the series stars Harrison Ford as the titular professor and archaeologist. Indy’s dedication to ancient artefacts takes him all over the world, where he faces off against Nazis, ancient cults, and Soviet spies in order to make sure these powerful treasures do not fall into the wrong hands.

In 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indy finds himself chasing down the powerful Sankara Stones in India, going up against a dangerous cult led by Mola Ram, who aims to use the stones for world domination. If you love the adventure, supernatural elements, witty protagonists, and blend of action, humour, and epic storytelling in the Pirates franchise (and are also a fan of Ford from movies like Star Wars and The Fugitive), make sure to check out Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023)

This fantasy adventure film from 2023 is based on the popular Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game—which should be familiar to fans of Stranger Things. The film is directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley and stars Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis as a ragtag team of unlikely heroes assembled to steal back an ancient relic after it falls into the wrong hands.

Similar to Pirates, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves combines supernatural elements with action, drama, and a lot of well-timed comedic moments to produce a fun swashbuckling tale that’s sure to entertain any lover of fantasy adventure movies.

    The Mummy (1999)

The Mummy is an iconic action-adventure film from 1999 written and directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The film follows the story of two Egyptologists, Fraser’s Rick and Weisz’s Evelyn, who must find a way to end the terror after the cursed ancient mummy Imhotep is accidentally reawakened.

Like Pirates, The Mummy is a fun action-adventure movie that features a dazzling mix of drama, humour, sword fighting, unleashed curses, and some horror elements — all while still being appropriate for those 12 and older. If you’re a fan of adventure movies that play with historical elements, like The Da Vinci Code, this one might be up your street.

    National Treasure (2004)

National Treasure is a 2004 heist-adventure film starring Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Harvey Keitel, Sean Bean, and Jon Voight. The film follows the story of historian and treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates (Cage) as he embarks on a mission to solve a family secret tied to the Freemasons that leads him all the way to the back of the United States Declaration of Independence.

National Treasure, like Pirates, blends supernatural elements with historical treasure hunting, action, and a nice balance of seriousness and humour. If you’re looking for a fun fantasy adventure (again, similar to pulpy page-turner movies like The Mummy and Da Vinci Code) that ups the mystery elements, make sure to check out National Treasure.

    Hook (1991)

Hook is an iconic fantasy adventure film from 1991 directed by Steven Spielberg and starring legendary actors Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts, and Maggie Smith. The film takes a unique look at the story of Peter Pan, imagining what would have happened if Peter left Neverland and grew up. Now a full adult with kids of his own, Peter (Williams) has forgotten who he used to be, but when his nemesis, Captain Hook, manages to abduct his children and hold them for ransom, Peter must find his way back to Neverland and rediscover the lost boy within.

Hook is one of the most family-friendly entries on this list. While it shares similar themes—supernatural elements, and adventure mixed with humour and action—with the Pirates films, it is far less violent and even more heartwarming—although Hoffman’s great portrayal of Hook can be a little scary. If you love Pirates’ more tender and character-based moments and like all things Robin Williams (especially movies like Patch Adams and Jack), don’t miss out on this absolute classic.

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

Based on the captivating 19th century novel of the same name by French author Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo has seen many screen adaptations over the years—but this 2002 version, starring Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce, is probably the best of the lot.

Known as one of the greatest revenge stories of all time, it tells the tale of Edmond Dantés, a happy young merchant sailor who is betrayed by his closest friend, Fernand Mondego. He finds himself arrested and imprisoned on an island, where he plots his revenge for years.

This one might take a more serious tone than the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but if you’re in the mood for a film full of period costumes (in the style of Zorro or The Three Musketeers), sword fights, treasure hunting, and sweet revenge, make sure to check it out.

    The Mask of Zorro (1998)

The Mask of Zorro is a 1998 action-adventure film directed by Martin Campbell and starring Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The film takes place in the 19th century and follows the story of a masked vigilante, named Zorro, who defends the innocent from corrupt injustice. He is caught and imprisoned by the evil governor Montero, who raises Zorro’s daughter as his own. Zorro eventually escapes some 20 years later, and teams up with his successor to exact revenge.

While Zorro is far less drunk and unruly than Jack Sparrow, the two share not only their sword-fighting skills but also their charisma and their morals—Jack might try and hide it, but he’s always on the side of the downtrodden, much like Zorro. Both Pirates and The Mask of Zorro also feature lots of top sword fighting, high stakes action, and a mix of drama and lighthearted humour. If you liked Banderas’ work in the Puss in Boots films, consider this the OG.

    Master and Commander (2003)

Master and Commander is a 2003 period war-drama directed by Peter Weir and starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. The film takes place during the Napoleonic Wars and follows the British captain Jack Aubrey’s dogged pursuit of an illusive French vessel off the coast of South America.

Although Master and Commander is far more dramatic than the Pirates of the Caribbean films, they share similar elements—notably their charismatic protagonists and incredible depictions of sea warfare, but also the themes of camaraderie in the face of hardship. Check out Master and Commander if you’re a fan of Weir (The Truman Show) or Crowe (Gladiator) or if you’re simply in the mood for a more serious and historically realistic approach to 19th century seafaring life.

    Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Although the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes has had many on-screen adaptations (the BBC’s modern take, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is legendary), Guy Ritchie’s 2009 version starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law is the most similar in tone and style to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The film takes place in late 19th century London, where Holmes is hired to investigate a series of mysterious, seemingly supernatural deaths linked to a shadowy organisation.

Similar to Pirates of the Caribbean, Sherlock Holmes is a fast-paced actioner with a mix of mystery, drama, and plenty of lighthearted humour—Netflix’s recent Elona Holmes is also a pretty close comp. While Holmes and Sparrow are two wildly different protagonists in temperament, both are strategic and think outside of the box in ways that ultimately make them come out on top.

    The Princess Bride (1987)

Last but in no way least, we have the iconic swashbuckling fantasy adventure The Princess Bride. Made in 1987, The Princess Bride is adapted by Rob Reiner from William Goldman’s novel of the same name, and stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, Billy Crystal, and the great Peter Falk. The story takes place in a medieval fantasy world where a young couple are separated after the man is presumed lost at sea. When he returns alive, now as an infamous pirate, he finds she is to be married to an evil prince who seeks to use her as a pawn to start a war.

The Princess Bride is one of the more family-friendly entries on this list — but that doesn’t stop it from having some great sword fights and epic revenge plots. Like Pirates and classic movies like The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Princess Bride also balances humour with action and more tender hearted moments. With so many quotable lines, it’s definitely one to watch and rewatch until the end of time.

The first Mission: Impossible starring Tom Cruise as superspy Ethan Hunt started the highly successful action franchise in 1995 that continues through to this day. Known for its impressive action sequences, big budgets, and breathtaking stunts, the Mission: Impossible films have earned their stripes as some of the best films in the action-spy genre.

With the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 in 2023, and the upcoming Part 2 set to be released in 2025, now is the perfect time to catch up on all current seven instalments in the franchise, and explore a whole host of movies like Mission: Impossible in preparation. So check out these 10 movies like Mission: Impossible and find out how (and where) to stream them all using platforms like Prime Video and Netflix below!

    Casino Royale

The James Bond franchise is perhaps the best known spy-thriller franchise in history. Jumping from the pages of Ian Fleming books series to screens in 1954, Bond has known many iterations, with actors like Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig taking on the iconic British spy mantle.

The 2006 version of Casino Royale featuring Daniel Craig’s Bond is one of the best 007 movies of all time. Like Mission: Impossible, the film succeeds in capturing the suspense, drama, and sweeping action of the genre while showcasing a magnetic protagonist’s impressive skills and charisma.

    The Bourne Identity

The Bourne franchise is another iconic spy film series that is sure to thrill any action movie fan. With five films starring Matt Damon as the CIA operative Jason Bourne, the franchise serves as a grittier and more dramatic addition to the genre.

The first film, 2002’s The Bourne Identity, focuses on Jason Bourne after he survives an attempt on his life, awakening with amnesia but still in possession of his top-notch spy skills. As he unravels what happened to him and who he was, he realises his enemies are still out there.

    Kingsman: The Secret Service

The Kingsman franchise got its start in 2014 with the first film, Secret Service, which introduced audiences to director Matthew Vaughn’s take on the spy genre. Featuring Taron Eggerton as Agent Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin, and Colin Firth as Agent Harry Hart, the Kingsman films take a more lighthearted approach than most spy films. Kingsman: Secret Service follows the story of the rough young Eggsy, who is plucked from a housing estate by the dapper agent Hart, to become a member of the secret service.

If you love Mission: Impossible, but also want a few more laughs in the mix, make sure to check out Kingsman: Secret Service and the other instalment in the franchise.

    Munich

Stepping away from franchises, Munich is a 2005 standalone film starring Eric Bana as an Israeli Mossad operative tasked with leading a mission to hunt down and assassinate those allegedly responsible for the deaths of 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team in Munich in 1972. The film is directed by celebrated director Steven Spielberg, and was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Writing for an Adapted Screenplay.

The film is historical fiction and adopts a much more serious tone than the others on this list, but if you’re looking for a spy film like Mission: Impossible that shows the darker side of being a spy, including the real-life consequences, this is the film for you.

    Ocean’s Eleven

Ocean’s Eleven is a 2001 action-heist film featuring an all-star cast including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, and Andy Garcia. The film is a fast-paced, quippy actioner that follows a team assembled by Clooney’s Danny Ocean as they attempt to carry out one of the most dangerous casino heists ever attempted.

If you like Mission: Impossible for the action and stunts, but want a bit more lightness and humour, Ocean’s Eleven is the film for.

    Body of Lies

Body of Lies is a 2008 spy-action-thriller directed by Ridley Scott and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as CIA operative Roger Ferris, Russell Crowe as his boss Ed Hoffman, and Mark Strong as the head of Jordanian intelligence Hani Salaam. When Ferris catches a wild plan to lure the infamous terrorist Al-Saleem out of hiding by creating a fake terrorist organisation, he finds himself and Hoffman playing a dangerous game of truth and lies.

Like Mission: Impossible, Body of Lies features some great action sequences, and the escalating tension between the characters as the stakes get higher makes it well worth a watch.

    The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

This 2015 film stars Henry Cavill, Alicia Vikander, and Armie Hammer as CIA and KGB operatives at the height of the Cold War. When a shadowy organisation intent on destroying the tentative balance of power emerges, these operatives from both sides must put their differences aside to put a stop to it. This action-packed action-spy movie has all the hallmarks of the genre, from the high stakes espionage mission to the betrayal, twists, and thrilling action sequences. If you love Mission: Impossible, make sure to check out The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

    Argo

Like Munich, Argo is also based on a true story. The 2012 film shows a fictionalised account of how CIA operatives in 1979 were able to carry out a plan to rescue American hostages in Iran by pretending to make a Hollywood sci-fi film in that country. The film is directed by Ben Affleck, and stars Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, and others. Argo was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won three, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Make sure to check out Argo if you love Mission: Impossible’s high stakes subterfuge and razor thin close calls.

    Jack Reacher

This 2012 film also stars Tom Cruise as the title character, this time a US Army police investigator called Jack Reacher. Reacher is brought in after an ex army sniper who is seemingly responsible for a mass shooting asks for him to be brought in to solve the case. While Jack Reacher might be more of an investigative cop film than a spy-thriller, if you love seeing Tom Cruise at work in an action role, you won’t be disappointed by Jack Reacher.

    The Italian Job

This 2003 film stars Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, Mos Def, and Donald Sutherland in a high-octane heist film that takes place across several international locations, including (obviously) Italy and the United States. After a heist, one of the members of the team betrays the rest and makes off with all of the gold. The team reassembles to seek revenge and steal their money back from their old comrade. While The Italian Job is more of a heist than a spy film, it features some incredible action sequences that rival the quality of any Mission: Impossible film.

Director Ridley Scott’s iconic 1979 sci-fi horror-thriller Alien starring Sigourney Weaver has become one of the most beloved franchises in film history. Event Horizon

Event Horizon is a 1997 classic starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Jason Isaacs, and Kathleen Quinlan. Like Alien, the film takes place in the future (2046) on a spaceship where things start to go wrong. The crew in question is sent on a mission to retrieve the Event Horizon, a ship that went missing and whose crew has mysteriously disappeared. Once aboard the seemingly abandoned ship, they begin to realise something far more sinister is afoot.

    Life

Life is a 2017 film starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds as members of a crew of scientists on the International Space Station. Like Alien, Life takes place within the tight confines of a spaceship in which a deadly alien entity grows as it hunts down the crew one by one.

    Leviathan

Levian is a 1989 sci-fi horror film starring Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Amanda Pays, and Ernie Hudson. While Alien takes place aboard a ship in space, Leviathan’s plot unfolds in the depths of the ocean in the confines of a deep sea station. With a storm raging above and no possibility of rescue, the crew find themselves trapped with the result of a genetic experiment gone wrong. Similar to Alien, Leviathan traps its crew in a confined space with a terrifying and rapidly evolving monster.

    The Thing

Legendary horror director John Carpenter helms this 1982 classic starring Kurt Russell, Keith David, and A Wilford Brimley. The story takes place in a remote research station in the Antarctic where a team of scientists have gathered to study an alien creature found frozen in the ice after some 100,000 years. But as it unthaws, it becomes clear the creature is still alive and intent on destroying them. To make matters worse, it is capable of assuming the form of any being it kills, making anyone a suspect. Like Alien, The Thing takes place in close quarters, and the terror of the unknown is used to ratchet up the suspense to great effect.

    Pandorum

Pandorum is a 2009 film starring Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Norman Reedus, Antje Traue, and others. Similar to Alien, Pandorum takes place within the confines of a spaceship — this time in the year 2174. Sent on a mission to colonise a distant planet, crewmembers Payton and Bower are put into a prolonged hypersleep. But when they wake up disoriented and with amnesia, it becomes clear that they are not alone on the ship. Pandorum is full of suspense, twists, and malicious hidden monsters sure to make your skin crawl almost as much as the xenomorphs.

    Underwater

This 2020 sci-fi horror stars Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassal, and TJ Miller as members of a crew of scientists working in the depths of the Mariana Trench at the bottom of the ocean. When a massive earthquake caused by their drilling destroys their underwater station, the crewmembers must make their way across the dark and treacherous ocean floor to find safety. Like Alien, Underwater features terrifying monsters that hunt their prey from the dark, and the tensions and stakes only ramp up throughout the film as time and oxygen run out.

    Sputnik

This 2020 Russian-language film stars Oksana Akinshina as an unorthodox doctor who is recruited to analyse a cosmonaut recently returned from space. After surviving an accident during reentry, the cosmonaut is put into quarantine where it is discovered he unknowingly brought back an alien lifeform that is living inside of him. The alien only comes out at night when the cosmonaut is asleep — and it feeds on human flesh. Although Sputnik is more of a drama than Alien, the gore, violent nature of the alien, and the symbiotic relationship between the creature and humans make this film worth a watch if you love Alien.

    The Descent

This 2005 horror starring Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, MyAnna Buring, Saskia Mulder, and Nora-Jane Noone tells the grizzly story of six friends who go on a spelunking trip into the depths of a cave in North Carolina. After they descend, they find that they are trapped, and — to make matters worse — they are not alone in the dark. If you want a film like Alien that has more gore and horror elements, make sure to check out The Descent.

    The Mist

Based on Stephen King’s novella of the same name, The Mist was adapted in 2007 by Frank Darabont into a film starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, and Toby Jones. It takes place in a small town in Maine which, after a violent thunderstorm, becomes enveloped in a dense mist. As the mist descends, the inhabitants of the town realise there are terrifying creatures lurking inside of it. The Mist is a tense horror film in which, like Alien, the creatures menacing the inhabitants are only briefly seen but their threat is constantly felt.

    Annihilation

Director Alex Garland’s 2018 sci-fi horror Annihilation features an all-star cast including Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac, and Benedict Wong. Portman stars as a scientist sent on an expedition to a mysterious zone known as the Shimmer to find out what happened to her husband. The Shimmer was created as the result of a meteor crash, and it has the effect of warping DNA, producing mutated plant and animal life within its confines. As the mystery of what happened unravels and the members of the expedition begin to turn on each other, the borders of reality blur. If you love the escalating sense of foreboding in Alien mixed with brief moments of shocking violence, make sure to check out Annihilation.

Hugh Jackman might be best-known for his enduring role as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, but the rest of the Australian actor’s varied and rich filmography shouldn’t be overlooked. From Les Miserables to The Greatest Showman and Eddie the Eagle, Jackman has proven the sheer breadth of his talents in these diverse roles. Read on to discover the best Hugh Jackman movies ranked and where to stream them online!

Back in 2000, as a season stage star, Hugh Jackman landed his breakout role as Logan aka the Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men, alongside Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Halle Berry. The Marvel movie kick-started a franchise, which Jackman was at the helm of, in a trilogy, prequel trilogy and his own spin-off series of films.

Critically and commercially acclaimed, X-Men went onto gross over $296 million at the box office on a $75 million budget, as well as lead to a sequel, X2 and a X-Men: The Last Stand. After the success of this trilogy, Hugh Jackman went onto his own solo film series in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009.

Another commercial success, garnering $373 million at the worldwide box office, this led to another two movies that culminated in the 15-rated, gritty superhero movie, Logan in 2017. It became the highest grossing movie in the trilogy and the third-highest grossing R-rated movie at the time of its release. It was also the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

Around his comic book commitments, Hugh Jackman fronted a host of romantic comedies such as Kate & Leopold, as well as starred in epics such as Baz Luhrmans’ Australia, the gripping crime thriller, Prisoners and fronted poignant dramas such as The Son.

Though Hugh Jackman’s other greatest strength, arguably, lies within musicals such as his outstanding performance in Les Miserables as Jean Valjean in 2012 and as PT Barnum in The Greatest Showman in 2017. In the big-screen adaptation of the stage play, Jackman as Valjean received widespread acclaim and won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical and was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards.

Similarly, The Greatest Showman was a record-breaking success at the box office and in the charts. The Grammy-Award winning movie musical grossed $435 million worldwide on an $84 million budget and earned Jackman another Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

Alongside this, Jackman has fronted poignant dramas such as The Son, as well as lent his voice to roles in Flushed Away and Happy Feet.

Most recently, Hugh Jackman has returned to play his claw cladded mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine, alongside Ryan Reynolds. The film which finally brings the X-Men franchise into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) opened to record-breaking success, taking $438.3 million worldwide on its opening weekend, making it the biggest opening weekend for a R-rated film at the time of writing. Jackman’s return to the franchise also earned him the title of the “longest career as a live-action Marvel character” in the Guinness Book of Records.

Understandably, some of Hugh Jackman’s best performances occur within this universe, with one of the best being Logan, which sits alongside his roles in Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman. The rest may be subjective, but the power of Australia, the haunting effect of Prisoners and the empowerment in Eddie the Eagle deserve a spot at the top of this list too.
