Minions & Monsters (2026) is the latest film in the Despicable Me (2010) franchise, taking things back to the Golden Age of Hollywood for a lot of fun cinematic deep-cuts to the likes of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Casablanca (1942), and Modern Times (1936). For the most part, the film leans into the goofy nature of the overarching series, adapting the little yellow goofballs into some of Hollywood’s most iconic legends.

Along the way, it finds a way to bring in plenty of monsters from the broader cinematic history, throwing them all into a blender for pure comedic effect. Along the way, though, the movie quietly does a good job of setting up a fun potential new direction for the series and how it could bring an unexpected, goofy touch to the series. Here’s how Minions & Monsters gives the titular comedy characters a chance to save the whole world and set up future films, too.

How Does 'Minions & Monsters' Connect To The Rest Of The Series

Minions & Monsters is largely disconnected from the larger Despicable Me franchise, although it does find some connective points in the post-credits gags. While Minions (2015) established that the primary batch of the goofy species spent the first half of the 20th century in the Arctic, Minions & Monsters confirms that other tribes of Minions were exploring the world at large during that window. One of these tribes is the focus of the new film, with their story taking them away from Gru and moving to Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood.

This remains consistent with most of the film, at least until the post-credits scene. After being absent for the rest of the film, characters like Gru, Dr. Nefario, Agnes, and the previously primary Minions, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, appear during the credits, messing around with the spellbook that had unleashed the monsters. This post-credits scene is largely a bunch of goofy magical gags, although it also explains the origin of Gru’s monstrous dog.

'Minions & Monster's Ending Reveals The Movie Was An In-Universe Film

The central threat of Minions & Monsters is Goomi, a little Cthulhu-esque creature that wants to unleash huge kaiju onto the world, like The Blob-inspired Irene. Despite their efforts to fully take down humanity, Goomi, Irene, and the rest of the kaiju aren’t able to keep up with the Minions, especially once their newfound ally, Dort, is able to come to their rescue and outfit them with an armada of spaceships.

It’s all a happy ending in the end, with Dort getting a family, the monsters all banished, and James even winning an Oscar. However, all of this turns out to be an in-universe film, with every character, including the creatures and characters who had been seemingly killed off centuries earlier, appearing on the film set together with the rest of the Minions. It’s a goofy climax to the already pretty silly movie, making all the deep cuts to Hollywood history more fitting.

How 'Minions & Monsters' Sets Up A Sequel

The Despicable Me franchise has never been all that rooted in an overarching narrative. For the most part, the series operates on a singular release schedule, with stand-alone films that don’t need much setup. Minions & Monsters is even more removed from the others, given that it largely takes place before the birth of Gru and focuses on an entirely different group of Minions. However, there is a potentially interesting tease of what the future of the films could be instead.

The post-credits gags largely focus on the primary Despicable Me cast contending with the magical potential of the spellbook, something the Minions enjoy messing around with but that Gru and Dr. Nefario aren’t prepared for. This could be a tease for a sequel for the technologically-driven Gru to confront supernatural challenges that are out of his usual wheelhouse. It could set up Minions & Monsters as a turning point for the franchise, where magical forces come more into play as opposed to the usual technologically empowered forces.

This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.
