After only a few weeks, it’s safe to say that Obession (2026) is a smash hit. Not only did it earn over $80 million at the box office on a budget of less than a million, but it’s rightfully earned plenty of critical acclaim too. The film has blown up on social media, whether it’s fans discussing the nature of the One Wish Willow, the mysterious phone call Bear received, and now, Nikki’s unsettling backwards walk.

It may be an odd thing for online discourse to focus on if you’re unaware of the context, but once you’ve seen the movie and see just how unsettling, forced, and oftentimes aggressive Nikki’s movements can be, it leaves an impact. But it isn’t just a random bit of physicality by Nikki’s actress, Inde Navarrette, to make the scene more unsettling. It’s actually tied into Nikki’s well-being and potentially gives us a tragic look at no matter how hard she tries, she can’t break free from Bear’s wish to love him.

What’s the Deal With Freaky Nikki?

As Obsession continues over its hour and 49-minute runtime, Nikki’s mental and physical state constantly degrades. While at first she appears to act and behave like a normal, albeit clingy, person, that slowly but surely devolves as she becomes an unhinged mess.

In a way, Bear got exactly what he asked for when he wished that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world. She becomes obsessed with him, and only has eyes for him to an unhealthy and inhuman degree. None of that should be hard to understand if you’ve seen the film, but one of the lingering questions director Curry Barker refuses to answer is what is possessing Nikki. Is it a monster? A demon? Pazuzu from The Exorcist (1973)?

Despite Barker not offering any meaningful insight, and knowing that we’re entering purely into the realm of speculation here, there is enough evidence to say that no, Nikki is not possessed by a demon. Rather, she’s been corrupted by the magic of the One Wish Willow. The Willow itself is not inherently evil, and isn’t some kind of monkey’s paw. Bear got exactly what he wanted, and his desperation matched Freaky Nikki’s devotion to him. The wish he made altered a part of her, and that corruption only continued to grow and fester, much like a virus, hence his call to the customer service hotline asking to alter his wish. If it were a demon, then her soul would be damned for all eternity, and there would be no way to free it. That’s not to say a demon couldn’t be possessing her, but if that were the case, then the final moments of the film would make a little less sense. If the demon just wants to torment Bear, why threaten to kill him or use the One Wish Willow on him?

Freaky Nikki’s Backwards Walk Is a Tragic Cry for Help

If we’re running with the idea that Nikki was corrupted by the One Wish Willow, then those moments where Nikki begins to walk backwards actually takes on a very new and darker meaning.

When Freaky Nikki begins to walk backwards in one of her final confrontations with Bear, it’s because Nikki, the real Nikki, is trying to break free from the influence of the wish. We’ve seen Nikki break free from the wish earlier in the film, like when she’s making out with Bear in bed or during the party with Ian, but those moments were fleeting, only lasting a few seconds. Each time she regains control, she always recoils back before being able to speak, pleading for help. Now, because the power of the wish has become too omnipresent, she’s unable to break free completely and is instead only able to move her body. Freaky Nikki is still the dominant personality, but Nikki is at least able to wrestle control of her body for a moment.

Regardless of whether or not you ascribe to the corruption theory or the demon theory, Nikki’s movement is clearly her trying to regain her autonomy. If it was the demon just messing with Bear, then why bother walking back at all? If Nikki was corrupted, the same question stands: why move away from Bear when she’s intensely yelling at him and screaming how much she loves him? That’s because it’s Nikki trying to take control but being too weak to do so, which also does help to put into context all of her comments about “the real me” and the torment she claims to be experiencing in her own body.

Why Doesn’t Bear Care About Nikki?

Bear hands raised obsession

Nikki is a prisoner in her own body; that much is blatantly obvious. No amount of excuses or jumping through mental hoops can change that. So why doesn’t anyone else try to help her more? Two words: Bear sucks.

Bear is a selfishly awful person. His desire to take the easy way out and completely usurp Nikki’s agency, then gaslight everyone around him into believing that everything is okay, makes him a truly awful protagonist. He sees Nikki’s erratic behavior and the few glimpses of her true self breaking out, but outside of being startled, he’s eager to delude himself into thinking that everything will be fine.

Look no further than the bedroom scene, where Freaky Nikki is asleep, and Nikki communicates with Bear. Nikki pleads for him to kill her, as she’s no longer fully in control of her own body, and Bear dismisses her by asking her if being with him is really unbearable. He only cares about the fact that she loves him and doesn’t care about her well-being. He got what he wanted, and if Nikki is being held captive in her own body like the Sunken Place in Get Out (2017), then that’s fine by him, which also probably explains why Nikki doesn’t talk to him when she walks backwards. She knows pleading with him will be pointless, so why bother reasoning with the pathetic excuse of a man that is Bear?
