'Buddy's Ending, Explained
Buddy (2026) doesn't depict the kids' television shows many of us grew up with in the '90s. Instead, this costumed orange unicorn is a certified nightmare that kidnaps children, kills the misbehaving ones, and will go off the handle if you don't follow the rules. Not to mention, the film's ending is just as brutal.
To guide you through Casper Kelly and Jamie King's demented story of a brave girl and her friends trying to escape a kids' television show, here's how Buddy ended. I'll also explain what Buddy actually is, and whether or not there is a possibility of a sequel (or two) down the line.
How Did 'Buddy' End?
Buddy ends with Freddy losing everyone but making it back to the human world.
After triggering Buddy to transform into a demonic-looking form, Freddy, Hannah, and Oliver go down The Worry Well. There, they discover a chained yellow unicorn who seems to be creating all of the creatures in the park. Hannah and Oliver are killed, with Freddy escaping through a second door with Strappy and Mr. Mailbox.
Freddy discovers what looks like a school hallway lined with lockers and with multiple locked rooms. One locked room has It's Buddy playing as these floating heads with electrodes and lights watch. Another room has multiple mailboxes. The walls also have framed photos of mail carriers and nurses, many looking dated.
Buddy proceeds to chase Freddy through these hallways. At one point, she trips, and she calls out to Strappy. They extend their straps to pipes on the wall and trip Buddy. Freddy then holds up the pointy end of Mr. Mailbox and impales Buddy, effectively killing him. Covered in blood, Freddy makes her escape into a room where It's Buddy is playing across a wall covered with TVs with children watching. This is how Buddy has been kidnapping children.
Freddy then takes a chance on one TV that has no one sitting and watching. She ends up managing to pass through this portal and make it back to the human world. To her dismay, Mr. Mailbox and Strappy are just regular items now. When an adult takes notice of her, they come in looking shocked and ask who she is.
What Exactly Is Buddy The Unicorn?
At the moment, we don't have an answer as to what Buddy actually is. We know he's a unicorn that, on the outside, looks like a costume character straight out of a '90s kids' show. But when he's hurt, he's made of flesh and blood. When Buddy is confronted with the children's hate, he transforms into a terrifying unicorn with black skin, clawed hands, and spikes coming out of his back.
Whatever Buddy actually is, they have the power to heal themselves once an episode ends through the power of a hug and song from the children. They're also able to modify memories in the human world on a global scale and within this layered TV dimension.
Is 'Buddy' Getting A Sequel?
At the time of writing, there are no plans for a Buddy sequel. However, the movie hints at more to come.
After Freddy kills Buddy, she keeps looking for an escape. For a couple of seconds, we see a mural that depicts multiple unicorns. On the left is Buddy in his orange glory with a purple heart on his belly. In the middle is a blue unicorn with a yellow star on his stomach called Bobby, and on the right is a yellow unicorn with an orange and red sun on their belly. They are called Benny.
Before you think the Buddy sequel might be Bobby and Benny getting revenge for Buddy's death, think again. Because that unicorn Freddy and her friends discover in the basement workshop looks like Benny, but he's battered-looking and chained, and the workshop creations are repeating the word "help." So what if this all started as a regular kids' show and Buddy overthrew the entire system for their own purposes? We know where Benny is, but where's Bobby?
