The Weirdest 'Obsession' Theory Is That Nikki Is Possessed By [SPOILER?]
When it comes to Obsession (2026), we’re the ones obsessed with this movie. Whether it’s Curry Barker’s script, Inde Navarrette’s acting, or the continued conversation around Bear being the actual villain, people can’t stop talking about this movie. When it comes to theories, fans have plenty of those, including one that claims Nikki isn’t possessed by her alter ego, Freaky Nikki. She’s possessed by Bear’s cat, Sandy.
Stay with us on this Obsession theory. While it might sound wild on the surface, fans have compiled evidence that might change your mind. We’re going to take you through the possession theory, what happened to Bear’s cat, and if Nikki was even possessed in the first place.
Warning major spoilers ahead!
What Evidence Supports The Theory That Nikki Is Possessed By Sandy The Cat?

The theory that Sandy is the one possessing Nikki comes in many forms, with the main one being how Nikki treated Sandy. Bear put her in a bag and threw her away, devastated when it suited him, but with a pretty girl there to soothe him. Nikki created an altar for Sandy to honor her and even had some flowers for her.
Now, Nikki did feed Sandy to Bear. That doesn’t fall into the honoring Sandy category. However, it is a twisted bit of revenge for Nikki, considering Bear threw Sandy away like trash and then wished for Nikki to love him more than anyone else in the world. If Sandy is possessing Nikki, she’s mad and wants him to literally eat what he threw away while indulging in his desire for Nikki.
There are also some physical things about Nikki that point to her being possessed by Sandy. For one, her eyes. There’s a moment in Obsession when Nikki comes over to apologize to Bear. She stands in the dark, her eyes having this weird glowing sheen to them, just like a cat. She even moves in a feline-like way when she moves away from Bear or returns to the shadows.
Then, there are Nikki’s habits and mannerisms. She watches Bear sleep like a cat would, and she patiently waits for him at the door, with no regard for herself. When he gets home, she had peed herself because he’s her whole world, just like a human is a cat’s whole world. She also looks to have gotten into some food in the kitchen that seems like cat food, just like how Sandy died in the first place. And then she mentions that she might’ve eaten a bug, something that cats commonly do because hunting instincts are real, even if cats are domesticated.
Either way, the fact that fans see a connection between Nikki and Sandy means that Bear’s desire to have a girlfriend is seen in the same way as having a pet. And we all saw what happened with Sandy.
What Happened To Sandy The Cat?

Bear’s cat, Sandy, died after eating his oxycodone pills. We can assume the pills were left out on a counter because when Bear comes home, the pills and Sandy are amongst a bunch of things in the kitchen that Sandy tore into. Also, later on, Bear makes sure to put the pills back in the medicine cabinet.
After Sandy dies, he cleans the spot of her passing with industrial cleaner. Then, he takes her body and puts her in a trash bag before throwing her away. Well… until Freaky Nikki finds the body and brings her back, opting for a more personal memorial to honor Sandy than Bear ever did.
Was Nikki Actually Possessed?

Nikki wasn’t possessed by anything in Obsession. Nikki was suffering the consequences of the wish made by Bear with the One-Wish Willow. It made her a puppet to fulfill Bear’s wish while suppressing Nikki’s own bodily autonomy. And it prioritized Bear’s desires and “love” above anything else.
The whole Freaky Nikki of it all was just a way for the movie to differentiate to the audience who was in control of Nikki’s body. But it was also a way for Freaky Nikki to tell Bear that the woman in front of him wasn’t his best friend. She was a construct based on Bear’s desires and will, making it so the relationship they had would never be more than his wish.
Bear’s death broke the wish and cut Nikki’s strings, so to speak. Since she spoke to Bear when Freaky Nikki was asleep, we can assume that she remembers some stuff. But we don’t think she remembers everything from her time “possessed,” if her horrified reaction at the end of the movie was any indication.
