Those of us who are fans of a good whodunnit will likely devour anything that comes along within the genre. Bonus points if the movie or TV show tries to get extra creative with the tropes, and that's exactly what The Sheep Detectives (2026) does. Judging by the title and poster, it's easy to dismiss the movie as a kids' story that might not have the same impact on adults. However, at its core, it's a lovely narrative that emphasizes the importance of holding on to the people we love, as well as a riveting account about grief tethered to a surprisingly funny murder mystery case.

The film stars Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Galitzine, Nicholas Braun, Molly Gordon, Emma Thompson, and more as humans, but we also get hilariously remarkable voice acting from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brett Goldstein, Rhys Darby, Regina Hall, Bryan Cranston, Bella Ramsey, and so much more that half the fun of the film is trying to place why their voices sound familiar.

It's both family-friendly and a must-watch for fans of Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man (2025), See How They Run (2022), and any cozy murder mystery out there. Now streaming on Prime Video, if you've just watched it, or you want to know exactly what you're in for, we've got you covered.

Who Kills George In 'The Sheep Detectives'?

Hugh Jackman and a sheep in The Sheep Detectives

Jackman's George is the shepherd whose death catapults everything into motion. After his death, the townspeople gather to recognize that there's indeed been a murder when his lawyer, Lydia (Thompson), shows up with his daughter, Rebecca (Gordon). Members of the flock hilariously leave their homes to help solve the murder themselves.

Hilariously, because George would constantly read the flock detective novels, they think they're well-equipped to solve this murder themselves. The recounting of various formulas like unexpected visitors and revelations does indeed prove they've been paying attention, but so do the hilarious conversations about the house of God and allegories about humans and sheep that make the movie outright hysterical.

Ultimately, the will reading reveals that George not only had a daughter the flock didn't know about, but that she's a twin (and he's overseas). However, we also learn that George was a millionaire because he'd invented medicine for the sheep and had sold the patent to a large vet company. In short, estranged children returning with revelations like this immediately make them the most obvious suspect, but anyone who's ever read or watched a whodunnit knows that's seldom the case.

And yet, what's interesting is that it's exactly what we get in The Sheep Detectives when the final discovery is eventually made that Galitzine's Elliot isn't actually a journalist, but rather George's son Peter Van Vuuren, who's supposed to be in South Africa at the moment. It's a clever twist to showcase both jealous familial motives and an obvious choice that comes to light in a creative manner.

More importantly, it's the detail that the decision comes into play because of the flock's help and their inability to give up on their shepherd, even though they have the special ability to literally forget everything, including the deaths of those they love.

Is The Ending Of 'The Sheep Detectives' Happy Or Sad?

George reading to the sheep in The Sheep Detectives

It's hard to rank the ending of The Sheep Detectives into one category when it's so nuanced and lovely. In fact, the bittersweet feeling we're left with is exactly what makes it worth watching because it thoughtfully nudges us to sit with our real, human feelings for a little bit.

It begs the question of what people would do if they had a chance to forget all the things in life that are too heavy or heartbreaking to bear. Would we? Probably not. Because the bad stuff is just as big a part of us as the good, even if it's heartbreaking. For a movie that's geared toward all ages, The Sheep Detectives does a really beautiful job of presenting conversations that aren't exactly easy to have, but they're necessary.

When the flock loses one of their own after Sebastian heroically protects them against Caleb's German Shepherds, Lily comes to the important revelation that she hasn't been holding on to those she's cared for, resulting in the kind of moment that's so gorgeously penned, you can't help but tear up a little.

In many ways, there's a happy ending, too, because not only is there justice after Lily has a vision of seeing George again, but Rebecca gets to stay with her late father's flock, and now has the chance to be their new shepherd. It's a lovely, genuinely sweet movie that explores grief in all its complex forms, yet it presents it in such a way that the emotions we're left sitting with aren't too heavy, but rather comforting.

George Hardy is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can't possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.
