'Insidious' Star's Underrated Neo-Western Thriller Is 'Yellowstone' Meets 'Rambo'
Westerns have become one of television and film's biggest comeback stories over the last few years. Yellowstone helped bring the genre back into the mainstream in 2018, proving there was still a huge audience for stories about ranches and family legacies. That trend has helped 2024's The Last Stand of Ellen Cole find a new audience.
The film, which features Insidious star Lin Shaye in the lead role, has recently climbed up the JustWatch streaming charts. While The Last Stand of Ellen Cole is a much smaller production than the films Shaye is usually associated with, it delivers exactly what its premise promises: A woman defending herself against armed mercenaries who quickly realize they've picked the wrong target.
The movie's success can also be attributed to a renewed interest in projects featuring older protagonists, like Jacob and Cara Dutton (played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren) in the Yellowstone prequel series 1923. The Last Stand of Ellen Cole follows the 80-year-old heroine (Shaye) who lives alone on her Montana ranch following the death of her husband. To everyone around her, Ellen appears vulnerable. She relies on an oxygen tank, keeps mostly to herself, and seems like the kind of person a corrupt land developer could easily pressure into selling her Montana ranch.
That assumption turns out to be a very expensive mistake. When the developer hires a group of mercenaries to force Ellen off her land, she uses her knowledge of the ranch to fight back with hidden traps and carefully planned ambushes. As a result, what starts as a basic home invasion story turns into a battle for survival in which Ellen seems poised to win.
What makes the film unique is that it doesn't spend too much time trying to explain every detail of Ellen's background because it doesn't really need to. It simply focuses on the attackers slowly realizing that they're no longer hunting an elderly woman. Instead, they are trapped on her property. And she's several steps ahead of them.
Where You Know Lin Shaye From
Although The Last Stand of Ellen Cole puts Shaye firmly at the center of the story, horror fans will recognize her from the Insidious franchise, which focuses on the Lambert family's struggle with a purgatory realm. Debuting in the 2010 movie, Shaye plays paranormal investigator and psychic medium Elise Rainier, who helps the family save their son from "The Further."
Elise becomes the emotional core of the films over the course of the franchise by helping families through supernatural horrors while confronting dangerous entities herself. Shaye is set to reprise the role in the highly anticipated Insidious: Out of the Further, which will hit cinemas in the United States on August 21, 2026.
But Shaye's connection to horror goes back much further than Insidious. She also appeared in Ouija (2014) before returning for Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016), another supernatural thriller that expanded the mythology surrounding the cursed spirit board. Throughout her career, she's built a reputation for playing characters who appear approachable at first but are far tougher than they initially seem.
Why 'The Last Stand of Ellen Cole' Is Attracting So Many Viewers
It's not difficult to see why people have started comparing The Last Stand of Ellen Cole to Yellowstone. Like the Taylor Sheridan-created series, the story revolves around a land dispute in rural Montana, with an outsider laying claim to a property that has more sentimental than financial value to its owner. Ellen's ranch isn't just where she lives. It's tied to her entire life, and defending it is everything.
The movie has also been compared to 2019's Rambo: Last Blood, which might seem odd at first. But it totally makes sense if you think about it for a second. Although Ellen approaches combat very differently from John Rambo, the drama comes from watching experienced people underestimate someone who has been preparing for this kind of situation far longer than they realize.
The Last Stand of Ellen Cole also fits alongside recent action thrillers featuring older protagonists, like Thelma (2024) and Nobody (2021). All of these stories play with audience expectations by taking characters who are usually overlooked because of their age and revealing that they're far more capable than anyone gives them credit for.
