The 2026 Cannes Film Festival is just around the corner. As the most prestigious film event of the year, it highlights some of the most exciting upcoming movies. While some of the most critically polarizing movies have hailed from Cannes, film enthusiasts still can’t help but hold their breath while awaiting Cannes’ responses to movies.

Standing ovations have become the norm at the festival, which emphasizes respect and celebration of cinema. However, only a few films have received extended standing ovations, lasting over 15 minutes. Use our guide to find the five movies that got the longest ever-standing ovations at Cannes, and how you can watch them for yourself on Hulu, Prime Video, and more.

05

The Neon Demon

The Neon Demon boasts the fifth-longest standing ovation at Cannes, clocking in at 17 minutes. It’s arguably the most surprising title on this list, given its intensely divisive, brutal premise. The film follows teenage Jesse (Elle Fanning) as she gets her first taste of the fashion industry as an aspiring model. However, her beauty draws intense attention and jealousy, turning her modeling career into a harrowing fight for survival.

The Neon Demon is an intense, horrifying, and moving horror satire that tackles the price of beauty, both in its ability to foster narcissism in those who bear it and to attract danger from those who want it. It’s by no means an easy film to watch, and is reminiscent of a blend of Black Swan (2010) and Only God Forgives (2013) with its graphic imagery and dark storyline. While the official premiere gained Cannes’ utmost respect, other showings garnered boos and walkouts.

Mud

2013

At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Mud earned an impressive 18-minute standing ovation. The film is often considered part of the “McConaissance,” given its place among the movies that marked a positive turn in Matthew McConaughey’s career. In the film, McConaughey portrays Mud, a fugitive who seeks the help of two teenage boys, Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), to reunite with his love and escape.

Mud is an interesting genre-bender, functioning as a drama, coming-of-age, and romance with Southern Gothic elements. McConaughey offers an incredible performance, while the film leaves you thinking about the nature of love, letting go, and life in rural Arkansas. Like Huckleberry Finn, it often feels like a nostalgic ode to childhood’s past. Mud’s quietly sad and thoughtful nature makes its standing ovation quite understandable.

As of the writing of this article, Sentimental Value is the newest film to make the top five longest-standing ovations list. The 2025 film tells the story of adult sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), who struggle to reconnect with their estranged father Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård) as he works on his latest film. It’s a searingly beautiful portrait of family, estrangement, and generational trauma that will hit close to home for anyone with difficult family dynamics.

Sentimental Value’s 19-minute standing ovation and clinching of Cannes’ Grand Prix Award is a testimony to its moving nature. The film has almost a poetic feel to it, in how beautifully it’s crafted and in the heart of its storyline. Not only does it beautifully capture the toll of generational trauma, but it also perfectly demonstrates the healing and reconciling power of art when words fail.

02

Fahrenheit 9/11

Like The Neon Demon, Fahrenheit 9/11 is another divisive title that nonetheless earned an extensive standing ovation, clocking in at 20 minutes to become the second-longest standing ovation ever. The documentary film tackles President George W. Bush’s initiation of the Iraq War. While Bush positioned the Iraq War as part of his wider War on Terror efforts, Fahrenheit 9/11 scrutinized his decisions, suggesting the president had ulterior motives for the war and that the media used 9/11 to push war propaganda.

As a political documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11 understandably earned a divided response among audiences. Still, the documentary succeeds as a sharp, surprisingly humorous, and often sobering indictment of the Bush presidency. Fahrenheit 9/11 delves into a tricky subject, but it tells the story with humor and simplicity that makes it flourish as a documentary.

01

Pan's Labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth holds the record for the longest-ever standing ovation at Cannes, garnering applause for an astounding 22 minutes. The dark fantasy film centers on Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), a ten-year-old girl who wanders into an ancient labyrinth where she must complete three tasks to earn immortality and return to her kingdom as the suspected reincarnation of Princess Moanna. It’s a unique movie that juxtaposes the brutal reality of 1944 Spain under a military dictatorship and a young girl's magical journey through the labyrinth.

Pan’s Labyrinth is one of the most hauntingly beautiful films, twisting horrific realities and dark fantasies into a mesmerizing fairy tale. Visually striking and powerfully tackling 1944 Spain through a fairy-tale allegory, few films compare to Pan’s Labyrinth. For two decades, the film has remained the only one to receive a standing ovation lasting over 20 minutes at Cannes.
