The Academy Award winner’s breakthrough role in 1993’s Dazed and Confused continues to be quoted relentlessly over 30 years since its initial release. Following supporting roles in such films as Angels in the Outfield and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, McConaughey’s first experience with truly leading a film came with the legal drama, A Time to Kill, in 1996 where he portrayed defense attorney Jake Brigance alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Sandra Bullock. His success continued in such titles as Contact in 1997 and in the Steven Spielberg-directed historical drama, Amistad, which saw McConaughey portray real-life American politician Roger Sherman Baldwin. He concluded the 1990s starring in Ron Howard’s satirical comedy EDtv which ushered in a new reign of McConaughey headlining romantic-comedies throughout the 2000s.

In a span of a decade, Matthew McConaughey starred in a number of popular rom-coms including The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Failure to Launch, Fool’s Gold and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. His brief appearance as Rick Peck in the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder also worked to further demonstrate his comedic prowess. Although he was considered to strictly be a romantic lead during this time, he also appeared in other films that allowed him to further explore his dramatic capabilities as seen in Frailty, Two for the Money and We Are Marshall. After being on a two year hiatus between 2009 and 2011, McConaughey returned to Hollywood with The Lincoln Lawyer thus beginning the era dubbed “The McConaissance.”

Following The Lincoln Lawyer, he starred in a slew of dramatic roles which received immense critical acclaim including Killer Joe, Mud, Magic Mike and 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club which earned Matthew McConaughey the Oscar for Best Actor. That same year he cameoed in the Martin Scorsese-directed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the following year, he starred in the Christopher Nolan epic sci-fi film, Interstellar. Since then, he’s appeared in such titles as Free State of Jones, Gold, The Dark Tower, White Boy Rick and The Gentlemen. He’s also lent his voice to a number of projects including 2016’s Kubo and the Two Strings, Sing and its sequel in 2021.
