Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is often labeled the US version of James Bond (even though that’s technically Mission: Impossible’s Ethan Hunt), but he’s not. Jack Ryan is so smart that he gets into situations involving stopping terrorists and world wars, depending on the movie or show.

Since 1990, five actors have played Jack Ryan; of those, two were part of the same series, and three played younger versions in different reboots. To rank them, it’s not about which movie is better, but rather which ones played Ryan as Clancy intended and which ones saw him as a modern action star, like John Krasinski in the newly released Jack Ryan: Ghost War (2026), rather than the CIA analyst he always was.

Chris Pine

Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan came at a time when more action-packed updates to classic IPs were the norm. Some worked, like another Chris Pine vehicle, Star Trek (2009), while others struggled. In this case, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The film sees the CIA scouting Ryan and then him working undercover on Wall Street in situations that even include his future wife, Cathy.

Pine gave his all to the role, but he played the character too much like a cool action hero. Per Tom Clancy’s creation, Ryan never wanted to be in the field and was a brilliant man who was stuck in wild situations, which Shadow Recruit only somewhat captures. But beyond that, the biggest crime of this iteration was that Ryan simply wasn’t that memorable, which is why it ranks last on this list.

Ben Affleck

The first attempt at rebooting the franchise and the third actor to take on the role of Jack Ryan, Ben Affleck played a younger version of the character in The Sum of All Fears. The film has Ryan working to uncover the location and culprit of a nuclear bomb in the US that, if detonated, could spark a war between the US and Russia.

The story of the movie is interesting and incredibly tension-filled, but the biggest issue isn’t that Ben Affleck isn’t a great actor (he is); it’s that he was miscast in the role. Similar to Pine, Affleck carried a tone that didn’t fit Ryan. He is more proactive and less contemplative, and when watching him at rest, you can tell something isn’t meshing between Affleck and the character.

John Krasinski

Prime Video’s Jack Ryan series and recent film, Jack Ryan: Ghost War, are the biggest departures from the source material to date, even if they work to a point. Tom Clancy’s character inspires the series, but while Ryan is still an analyst, he’s not against going into the field and feels very much in his element.

Krasinski knows how to play a more contemplative version of Ryan, and that’s where he plays the character at his best. It’s a risk aging him up too much, but the series was smart to do so. Unfortunately, the show isn’t anything like how Ryan should be, and thus makes Krasinski’s portrayal feel like a generic action spy. That said, I forgive it because it’s a genuinely fun show and a great way to introduce people to the character before exploring his more methodical portrayals.

Patriot Games

Harrison Ford

Speaking of methodical portrayals, Harrison Ford marks the moment that the “real” Jack Ryan portrayals begin. The only film actor to appear in two movies, so far, Ford’s Jack Ryan continues the series started by Alec Baldwin in Patriot Games. This film marked a more toned-down look at the character, who is now a teacher and just trying to care for his family until they’re put in danger.

Clear and Present Danger maintains the same idea as Ryan continues to push his ideals of doing the right thing. What makes Ford’s portrayal of Ryan so great is that he’s played as a normal man who happens to be very skilled in government affairs. But Harrison Ford’s screen presence and popularity as Indiana Jones make it hard to see Ryan on screen, no matter how great.

Alec Baldwin

The Hunt for Red October is the first book in Tom Clancy’s Ryanverse and is also the first film based on the character. Alec Baldwin brings Ryan to life as a CIA analyst helping to determine if a Russian nuclear sub heading to the US is an enemy or defecting.

Baldwin delivers a near-perfect portrayal of a CIA analyst who is too skilled at his job for his own good. The typical office man who gets put in the field, Baldwin captures the intelligence, intensity, and measured approach needed to bring Jack Ryan to life. Where every actor brings something of the character to the big screen, Baldwin brings it all, and it’s a shame he was only in one film.
