What Are Ghost Rider’s Powers? Marvel's Spirit Of Vengeance, Explained

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally bringing Ghost Rider to the franchise, and Ryan Gosling will be carrying the curse in 2028. There's a lot about Ghost Rider, as a character, that people don't know, and over the many names who have carried the curse, they've had many powers.

Ghost Rider is often considered one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, and for good reason. With a desire to avenge innocent blood being spilled, the Spirit of Vengeance has defined supernatural strength in the best ways, and there are many powers to know about before he races into theaters.

Johnny Blaze Introduced the Concept of Hellfire

Johnny Blaze was the first Ghost Rider to be cursed by Mephisto, and he had a specific set of skills throughout his early tenure while being possessed by Zarathos, the Spirit of Vengeance. Like all Riders, Johnny had superhuman strength, speed, agility, and reflexes. However, he also had regenerative capabilities and could sense sinners around him who harmed innocents.

But Blaze's main form of attack was the manipulation and use of hellfire. This was a powerful supernatural flame that could purify and burn souls and cauterize the body. He could also use the fire to create constructs, and it helped Blaze in conjunction with his ability to eat the sins within the souls of others.

Johnny Blaze spent years using these powers until he temporarily broke free from his curse. That said, he still manipulated hellfire and even channeled it into a shotgun when Danny Ketch became the next Ghost Rider. Johnny Blaze would eventually get similar weapons and skills as Ketch but remained the only one who, for a time, only used hellfire as his weapon.

The Penance Stare Is a Crucial Ghost Rider Ability

When Danny Ketch became the next Ghost Rider, he was possessed by a family ancestor named Noble Kale, rather than a true Spirit of Vengeance. This gave him both the same abilities as Johnny Blaze as well as the Penance Stare.

The Penance Stare allows a rider to stare into the soul of his enemy and force them to take the full brunt of pain and torment they inflicted on others. Typically, this will leave them mentally crippled and trapped in endless torment over the things they did. This has been used in comics and media to take down bad guys like Galactus and also better define characters like the Punisher, who typically feels no regret for the murders he's committed.

Following Danny's tenure as the main Ghost Rider, others like Johnny Blaze and Robbie Reyes have gained a Penance Stare, and it's since become a mainstay for all riders. It's also appeared in both live-action films, with the 2007 version having a mantra and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) making it a drawn-out experience that ends with the victim turning to ash. Typically, the stare is shown as beams erupting from Ghost Rider's eyes into the criminal, and it would be fun to see this happen in the movie.

A Ghost Rider Can Transform Any Vehicle

Ghost Rider's most famous abilities also make him incredibly powerful and dangerous in the Marvel Universe. Still, when it comes to the cool factor, nothing can top the ability to turn any vehicle into a fiery mode of transportation. Ghost Rider will typically turn a motorcycle or car into a hell-powered vehicle through the use of hellfire to transform it.

At first, Johnny Blaze would use hellfire to call his bike from the Earth before later having his own bike transform. Danny would use his sports bike, which had a family medallion as the gas cap, to transform into his bike, and Robbie Reyes would transform his car. But as movies like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance showed, the rider can use any vehicle.

Once transformed, these vehicles can go incredibly fast and also be indestructible. Danny Ketch's bike even had a shield that he would use as a battering ram. The best power, though, is that all vehicles have the capability to travel to different planes of reality, especially Robbie's Hell-Charger. In the end, the vehicles of the Ghost Rider are not only cool, but they define just how powerful the character is.
