The Kandarian Dagger, Explained (And Why It's Important In 'Evil Dead Burn')
Evil Dead Burn (2026) is the latest sequel in the decades-old franchise that started with Sam Raimi. In that time, lore has expanded in many different directions between movies and television, with some details not being picked up for years.
The Kandarian Dagger is a great example of this since, after being dormant for years, it finally appeared in Evil Dead Burn and played a major role in stopping the Deadite forces. But since it's such a unique artifact, not as popular as the Necronomicon, it's best to explore its history and how Evil Dead Burn changed the lore to fit years of history.
What Is 'The Evil Dead's Kandarian Dagger?

The Kandarian Dagger appeared in The Evil Dead (1981) and, while not outwardly explained, was quickly implied to be the antithesis to the Book of the Dead. This was further solidified in Evil Dead II (1987) when Annie Knowby used it against Deadites, and the dagger itself was redesigned and given far more agency.
But as the franchise continued with Army of Darkness (1992) and Evil Dead (2013), the dagger took a backseat. It wasn't until Ash vs. Evil Dead (2015) that it appeared again and became a more important artifact used by the Dark One, Ruby, and later traded for the Necronomicon between her and Ash.
Strangely, the dagger didn't maintain its importance, considering that it is the one thing that can purify a Deadite, although it often kills the host as well. Nevertheless, it's the greatest weapon against them. The dagger continued to move between hands until Evil Dead Burn offered a new perspective that expands on the lore
How Was The Kandarian Dagger Used In 'Evil Dead Burn'?

Evil Dead Burn marks the first time in almost a decade that the Kandarian Dagger appeared, and it took the place of the Necronomicon as the key item for the film. In this instance, the Deadites were looking for the dagger, knowing what it could do to them and knowing it was out there freely, at risk of being used once again.
After hunting down the Price family, we learn that while the grandfather, Benjamin Price, didn't have the Necronomicon, he did have the dagger among a bag of other potential ones. This alone fuels the forces of evil to claim the weapon so that nothing could stop them from taking over. But they had to torture and kill to find its location.
In the end, the dagger was a small blade, makeshift but still sharp, that said "Kandar" on the hilt. We see its power front and center when Alice stabs Will, and he turns back to himself before dying. From there, we know that, once again, the dagger can immediately cleanse a soul, explaining why the Deadites were so scared of it in the first place. But the fact that it looks the way it does also adds a new layer to its lore.
How 'Evil Dead Burn' Changed The Kandarian Dagger Lore

Like past Evil Dead films expanded on and even changed the lore of the franchise, Evil Dead Burn has done the same for the Kandarian Dagger. The best part is that it did so without negating anything that came before it.
Brief lines of dialogue and a page of notes from Benjamin Price confirm that there is more than one Kandarian Dagger, and the one that the Deadites were looking for in Evil Dead Burn wasn't from the past films. That said, the film still nodded to it by showing a smaller version of the one from Evil Dead II.
Like the Necronomicon, multiple versions of the Kandarian Dagger have been made, and no two are alike. In this case, this dagger, over centuries of use, is more like a small letter opener that packs a punch. But that doesn't mean that the one from the past films and shows is redundant. Instead, it's a small expansion that keeps the series alive, as there are likely other daggers that evil will want to find so they may once again try to take over.
