Ahead of its release, Evil Dead Burn (2026) has been praised for its fear factor and gore, already being considered one of, if not the scariest, entries in the franchise. This is not only fair to assume from the trailers alone but also begs the question of which one is the scariest of them all.

The Evil Dead (1981) started it all and succeeded in setting a standard for how it should make an audience uncomfortable while also terrorizing them from beginning to end. Evil Dead Rise (2023) perfectly balanced the humor of past films with the horror. But the true scariest entry belongs to none other than Evil Dead (2013).

‘Evil Dead’ Modernized the Horror of the Original Without Taking Anything Away

One of the things that Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead films did and did well was transition from horror to horror/comedy. Army of Darkness (1992) saw the final iteration of this on the big screen, offering fans a new dark fantasy angle for the story that still had laughs.

Evil Dead took the series back to basics as Fede Álvarez took the premise of the original and introduced something new. As a group of friends spend some time helping their friend detox in a cabin, one reads from a Necronomicon, unleashing the Evil upon them.

The film captures many tropes from the original films, like locking a Deadite in the basement, double-barreled shotguns, losing hands, and replacing them with chainsaws. But it also brings something more to the series as it’s not trying to outdo the original but to show it from a different perspective.

The horror of this film is very much of its time, and because of that, it’s very bloody and violent but also doesn’t fall into similar remake/requel trends of losing the spark of what made it great. While the movie wasn’t what fans wanted at the time, the decade since has helped the horror of the film find its place.

‘Evil Dead’s’ Deadites Were Far More Terrifying than Any Other

Mia as Deadite in Evil Dead

One thing that changed the standard of the Evil Dead franchise was the way Deadites were explored in Evil Dead. Not only did their eyes look different, with yellow and red eyes rather than the traditional white, but they were far more malicious. In past films, it was the Evil that would possess people and objects to terrify Ash.

However, in Evil Dead, only humans were possessed, and rather than tease their victims, they acted as if they were genuinely possessed and focused heavily on self-harm to discomfort a victim. They also assaulted victims and weren't afraid to stab them repeatedly as they clawed at their souls. It makes you realize that this is a no-win situation.

Deadites are still Deadites in Evil Dead, but they are only slightly more serious before Evil Dead Rise found the perfect balance. But by leaning more serious, it also makes the horror far more unsettling and scary even for seasoned fans.

‘Evil Dead’ Continued to Build on the Lore

Evil Dead is very much the most standalone movie in the entire franchise, and that’s totally fine. But even though it’s such a singular experience, the film still delivers an expansion on the lore of the Evil Dead universe.

For starters, this is the first time we’ve seen the second of the three Necronomicon shown in Army of Darkness. This helps make the movie feel different while connected, but if you binged the past films, it also changes the rules of what to expect. There’s also the goal of this film’s Necronomicon that feels so different from what came before.

Unlike other books, Evil Dead focuses heavily on capturing souls to bring about an Abomination. This hellish being appears in a rain of blood from the Earth with the hope of spreading its terror around the world. As a result, Evil Dead has the highest stakes of any film in the series.

The Abomination is one of the most powerful and scary enemies in the series as well and helps make the more action-packed final act still feel like a fight for survival. Evil Dead isn’t like any other Evil Dead movie you’ve seen before, and that’s a good thing because what it does well is be scarier than any other film.
