Warning: The following contains spoilers for Evil Dead Burn and descriptions of death and animal violence as depicted in the film.

Evil Dead Burn (2026) might be the single grimmest entry in the franchise, and it isn’t afraid of emotional and physical brutality. While other entries in the series shoot for macabre laughs, like Army of Darkness (1992), Evil Dead Burn is a harsh story about a family crumbling under the weight of their own grief and tragedy. It doesn’t play around, with the early kills cementing just how vicious the rest of the story will be.

The first real sign is the death of Max, the family dog, after the first act, with Edgar slaying his dog in front of the family and on-screen. It’s a harsh moment that feels heartbreaking for both the family and the audience. It’s also what establishes the tone for the rest of Evil Dead Burn.

What Happens To The Dog In 'Evil Dead Burn'?

Deadite dog in Evil Dead Burn

One of the key turning moments in Evil Dead Burn is the death of Max the dog, followed promptly by his resurrection as a Deadite. Max belongs to Edgar, Will’s father. He’s also one of the only instances of affection shown to Alice by Will’s family following his death, a sweet animal that nevertheless stays by Edgar. Even after the Deadites infect Edgar and he begins to transform, the dog remains by his side. However, after Edgar gives in to the corruption, he uses a wine cork to brutally attack and kill Max.

Although Max is buried, it’s not long before the Deadites revive him, too, using him to keep the rest of the victims in the house. It’s a cruel moment of horror, especially when Max returns to Edgar’s side despite how he killed him. In the end, Max is slain when Alice finally escapes from the house, using the dagger with the words of the Wise Ones etched into the handle to slay the Deadite within Max. It’s a brutal moment but one that isn’t anything different from the rest of the film.

We've Seen Deadite Animals Before, But 'Evil Dead Burn's Dog Is Different

Alice and Susan in Evil Dead Burn

It’s not like animals were immune to danger in previous movies in the franchise. Possessed animals were used for gallows humor in Ash vs. the Evil Dead (2015). Grandpa the dog was beaten to death off-screen in Evil Dead (2013), and Evil Dead Rise (2023) featured multiple children being ripped apart by the possessed. However, Evil Dead Burn takes some real time to subtly position Max as something comforting, both for Alice and Edgar. Neither character is in a great place after the death of Will, but Max actually approaches both of them easily and sweetly.

That’s what makes Max’s demise so painful for the audience as well as the viewer; Max has been nothing but a good dog and gets killed for it. It’s when the film’s tone takes a turn into overt horror after approaching the first act with more of a stop-and-go approach to the scares. It underscores the fact that this isn’t a film where someone being good is going to automatically save them. Even though Will had already been killed, Max’s death is the first real sign that Evil Dead Burn has no problem killing off characters, which is quickly followed by a series of vicious murders.

The Dog In 'Evil Dead Burn' Is The Movie In A Nut Shell

Alice cowers in Evil Dead Burn

Evil Dead Burns is ultimately a bleak film and, in many ways, feels descended from the New French Extremity style. Instead of just taking cues from previous entries in the movie like Evil Dead II (1987), which balanced the humor and the horror pretty effectively throughout, Evil Dead Burn is about trauma and surviving it. It’s not necessarily a feel-good movie about that either, with denial and fury giving way and taking many of the movie’s emotional subplots in grim directions that are more befitting the horror of the premise.

While the movie doesn’t pull every trigger the series ever has (there’s nothing in the new movie that feels similar to the assault carried out by trees in 1981’s The Evil Dead), Max’s death underscores the innocent victims of abuse. Like Alice, there’s no reason that they had to be a victim of their loved one losing themselves. While Alice at least survives the film, Max’s death is a good secondary example of what the movie is really about and the horror going on underneath the surface.

After her husband's abrupt death, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws. As they transform into Deadites one by one, she comes to discover that the vows she took in life survive even in death.
