Onslaught (2026) is purposefully light on worldbuilding, with all the conspiracies and bizarre characters more set dressing than anything else. The real focus is a bombastic ballet of violence, where three upgraded super soldiers are unleashed onto a civilian population. It takes a few veterans to properly respond, especially Celeste, the movie’s protagonist.
Struggling with PTSD herself, Celeste is notably someone who knows how to go toe-to-toe with tough opponents, but also how to survive as a person. This sets up her final duel with the last of the super soldiers, Butcher. It’s also teased all film long with her story of a boxing match she got into while serving in the army. While deployed, a number of Celeste's fellow soldiers found themselves hosting an amateur boxing ring. When one burly soldier challenged her to fight, Celeste got the win by kicking him in the crotch and taking him by surprise.
She then helped the fallen man back to his feet, all while telling Daisy that the moral of the story is that you never mess with someone who has more to lose in a fight. This story takes on even greater meaning when it's revealed that Butcher, the leader of the deadly commandos, was the same soldier that Celeste beat all those years ago. He reveals this as they face off for one more duel, which Celeste wins (only this time, she makes sure he can't get up again).
'Onslaught' Is About a Soldier’s Limits (and Humanity)
Butcher really doesn’t need to have a connection to Celeste to work as a character. In fact, this connection may even seem like too big of a coincidence for some audiences, given the purposefully randomized nature of the soldiers and the terror Onslaught draws from that aspect of them. However, there’s a grim purpose to making Celeste and Butcher former acquaintances. It underscores how both of them were able to previously connect on some level as people, whether that be in the Butcher’s bravado, Celeste’s cunning, or her offer to help him up after knocking him down. Both of them are painfully human in these moments. Whereas Celeste is able to move on with her life (albeit still haunted by her PTSD), Butcher never formally escaped his trauma and has had it overwhelm him.
It’s to the point where the man is gone, and all that is left is the killer. The pair knowing each other makes it clear that their final battle is more than just a struggle for survival. For Butcher, it’s another target they can destroy, similar to the scores of innocents he has already killed. For Celeste, it’s a sign that some people can’t be saved and that she has to keep fighting regardless of the threat she is facing.
The Boxing Story Underscores the Scariest Part of 'Onslaught'
The boxing story also serves as one of the more tragic parables of the overall film. In Celeste’s telling, an overconfident soldier learned his lesson, was knocked down, and was helped up by the one who beat him. By contrast, Celeste is forced to end their rematch in a far more brutal fashion, dismembering Butcher before killing him with a chainsaw. The result is a grisly finale for Butcher that doesn’t shy away from the moral and mortal cost of becoming a soldier. It’s only her training (as well as assistance from others) that got Celeste into that position to fight Butcher in the first place.
Celeste’s ability to move beyond what the war had done to her was the key to her leading a new life as a person. By contrast, the Butcher was lost to it and could only see Celeste the opponent, not Celeste the soldier, comrade, or friend. Both seem to recognize each other in their final duel, but whereas that gives Celeste a burst of fury that she uses to overcome him, it gives Butcher a blunt awareness of his target as just that.
Celeste is able to see more of the soldier and doesn’t back down from dispatching him, while Butcher once again underestimates her and pays the price. The boxing story serves as the ultimate distinction of wartime trauma in Onslaught, revealing how it can make a monster out of someone or underscore the humanity that endures despite it.
