What To Watch Before ‘Tygo’: The Official Extraction Universe Watchlist, Explained
The Chris Hemsworth Extraction (2020) films have become the pride and joy of Netflix’s action space, and for good reason. The stylized action is filmed in a way that feels like a single take is a strategy that never gets old, and the stunts and choreography are impressive. But Tygo (2026) will take the franchise to even greater heights.
The Extraction franchise is still new, with a TV show, Mercenary: An Extraction Series (TBA), coming and a third film in the main series also in the works. But Tygo, starring Don Lee (Eternals (2021), is a South Korean spin-off about a child soldier on a revenge mission. Here’s what to watch before the spin-off, both in the Extraction universe and films that scratch that specific itch, all available to stream now on Netflix, Prime Video, and more!
Extraction (2020) was the film that started it all and stars Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary tasked with saving the son of a drug lord and extracting him out of Bangladesh. Things get far more complicated, however, and a massive battle across the city unfolds.
Extraction is most famous for being shot as though it’s all taking place in one scene, and it does so while still maintaining great character moments and shocking twists. Extraction is the most important film in the franchise not just because it started it but because of how it impacted the genre.
Following Rake’s sacrifice at the end of Extraction, it didn’t seem like he would return, but Extraction 2 (2023) confirmed he was back in full force and tasked with saving a crime lord’s family from a prison in Georgia. Extraction 2 ups the ante from the original in every way and shows Rake’s skill in a brand new setting.
Extraction 2 isn’t meant to be the exact same thing as the first film, and that’s the smartest thing it could’ve done. From new characters to greater action scenes, this is everything that makes a great sequel as it continues to expand the universe in a big way.
The first film in the long-running Roundup franchise, The Outlaws (2017) introduces the world to South Korean Detective Lieutenant Ma Seok-do (Don Lee) and his efforts to keep the peace between Chinese-Korean gangs.
What makes The Outlaws such a standout in the action movie space is Don Lee’s hard-hitting punches. It’s what he’s most famous for, and to understand the type of action he will bring to Tygo, The Outlaws is the action film for you.
When it comes to the most brutal martial arts films ever made, The Raid: Redemption (2011) is almost always near the top or at the top of the list. The film follows a police officer named Rama (Iko Uwais) as he and his team must fight their way out of an apartment complex filled with criminals.
Few movies can maintain the brutal momentum of The Raid: Redemption, with its intense fight scenes and grittiness redefining the genre. Compared to Extraction, these films are cut from the same cloth, hit hard, and deserve to be watched together.
Directed by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Infinity War (2018), The Gray Man (2022) is an adaptation of a novel series by Mark Greaney starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. The action film follows the mysterious Sierra Six, who has to fight off a twisted hitman after he discovers dark truths about the CIA.
The Gray Man is one of Netflix’s big-budget action spectacles, and while its plot is simple, the action is still very fun. Ryan Gosling surprises as a skilled combatant, while it doesn’t hit as hard as Extraction, the movie has the same energy and is a great movie to kill time with.
When a retired assassin’s wife dies, a group of criminals break into his home, beat him up, steal his car, and kill the puppy that his wife gave him as a dying wish. John Wick (2014) is the start of a revenge story about a man who takes on the organization that he left, first as revenge and then to reclaim the peace he lost.
When it comes to the gritty brutality of Extraction, John Wick stands apart as it focuses more on style than solely hitting hard. Nevertheless, the film has amazing choreography that elevates what Extraction introduced and gives those who loved the action of one film a new aesthetic and franchise to cling to.
The Night Comes For Us (2018) is a great rescue story about an ex-enforcer crossing paths with an up-and-coming gangster and his goons as the enforcer tries to rescue a young girl. It’s a brutal rescue story where martial artists Joe Taslim (Mortal Kombat (2021) and Iko Uwais showcase the full reach of their impressive skills.
The action is brutal as Taslim fights just like Tyler Rake with the hope of rescuing and protecting a single target. The Night Comes For Us is a relentless film that shows audiences just how far the genre has come and is a perfect companion to the Extraction movies.
