When Jon Bernthal returned as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again (2025), it was a welcome return for such a beloved iteration of the character. That said, no one expected him to come back following that appearance in a new special, The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026).

I was incredibly excited to see how the special would reintegrate Frank into the Marvel Cinematic Universe on a much larger scale, and his fight to survive was a sight to behold. It also aided in making the ending to this Disney+ special presentation something exciting. Here’s what we learned from the violent ending of The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Frank Castle Fights To Survive

The Punisher: One Last Kill is a 44-minute fight for survival, but before the bullets start flying, it’s a story about Frank Castle trying to end his life but never being able to. He’s gotten his revenge, and he doesn’t know what’s worth fighting for because he wants to be with his family more than anything. The kickstart to the ending of the special is predicated on this.

On his way back from his family’s grave, where he nearly took his life, Ma Gnucci is waiting for him and expresses that for taking her family from her, she has put a bounty on his head. Thus, a mad dash to survive goes from mental to physical and gives fans one of the best Punisher fights in the character’s live-action history.

The Punisher Takes On Hordes Of Enemies To Reach His Target

Frank Castle spends most of The Punisher: One Last Kill staying away from killing random criminals; however, once his contract is live, he has to fight to save those caught in the crossfire. What results is one of the best ongoing fight scenes in the MCU.

Frank takes the fight from apartments to rooftops and into the streets of Little Sicily as he uses his military tactics to decimate the criminals trying to kill him. Using guns, melee weapons and his fists, it’s the most brutal we’ve seen the character and puts his time in his Netflix series to shame.

Frank Castle Makes A Choice That Changes Everything

As Frank Castle fights his way through the streets, taking hits and stabs along the way, he sees Ma Gnucci and is brutally focused on taking her out. However, he’s torn between killing her or protecting those who don’t deserve it. His choice to focus on the latter changes the course of his life forever and sets him up perfectly for his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).

By saving the family, a little girl, he is reminded of his own daughter, and even though he brutally kills people to save them, he sees that people still look at him as a protector and puts him on a path beyond revenge that, as a comic fan, I was so happy to see.

The Punisher Is Back And Becomes A True Anti-Hero

A close-up of Frank Castlel in The Punisher: One Last Kill

Following the chaos started by Ma Gnucci, Frank realizes that he has to be the Punisher, not because he wants revenge but because people need him to do what he does. This is proven when the series ends with the Punisher appearing in a new outfit, confronting a criminal who beat up a homeless man and killed his dog at the start of The Punisher: One Last Kill.

At first, he lets him go until the homeless man asks, in not so many words, for him to be punished for the death of his dog. With his nod of approval, Frank kills him in the streets. It’s brutal and traumatizing to the average person, but it matches the anti-hero tone Frank Castle always had and needed in the MCU. I love that Frank is finally the anti-hero he needs to be in this franchise, and it’ll be exciting to see his further growth when he meets Spider-Man.

As Frank Castle searches for meaning beyond revenge, an unexpected force pulls him back into the fight.
