The MCU X-Men Will Finally Deliver On A Sinister Promise From 10 Years Ago
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) marks the beginning of the end of this current iteration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Jake Schreier's upcoming X-Men (2028) film marks the dawn of a new age. 2026's D23 gave us a peek at some of the main cast of the upcoming film, and the biggest surprise was Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
While this marks the first time we are seeing him in live-action, Mister Sinister has been a dark shadow over the Fox X-Men universe for years. But with the MCU finally giving us a payoff, of sorts, what will Driver need to bring to make the role shine?

Early Fox X-Men movies always put a heavy focus on Magneto, with some names like William Stryker or Sebastian Shaw taking the spotlight, albeit briefly, from the Master of Magnetism. But Mister Sinister has always been an amazing villain in the mythos who never got the chance to shine on the big screen. Nevertheless, following the defeat of Apocalypse, the teasing about his appearance began.
X-Men: Apocalypse saw the Essex Corporation take Wolverine's DNA after his escape, and Logan's Alkali-Transigen was tied to Essex Corp behind the scenes, which led to the creation of X-23. Deadpool 2 continued this trend with Essex House using the villain's human last name, Nathaniel Essex, for locations. In this case, it was to abuse young mutants through torture.
The New Mutants was the last connection to Mister Sinister, as the main cast stayed in Milbury Hospital, another name Sinister used, and Dr. Reyes was working for Sinister without the children knowing. In the end, it was clear that plans were in place to make Sinister a threat, but ultimately it never panned out.
What Can Adam Driver Bring To The X-Men Villain?
Adam Driver is best known for his more stoic roles from his time in the Star Wars franchise, starting with Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), and for his more dramatic roles, like Marriage Story (2019). However, he's also proven that he can be much more comedic and deadpan, often spewing fantastic lines of dialogue with hilarious delivery in movies like The Dead Don't Die (2019) or shows like Girls (2012-2017).
Driver is more than capable of exploring a range of characters across many walks of life, and it's perfect because Mister Sinister has lived for decades under various aliases and personalities. To nail a character like Sinister, all it takes is a mixture of these ideas into something unsettling but still fun.
Sinister is more than a name, as his character is evil through and through. He's well-spoken and proper even if he looks like something out of Hellraiser (1987), but he's also wildly manipulative. As his character evolved, he proved always to be one step ahead, intelligent, completely unhinged, and sarcastic; if anyone could nail this and bring something new to the role, it's Driver.
Mister Sinister Is Ready For A Live-Action Debut
X-Men '97 (2024) picked up where the animated series left off, and that included a narrative that tied heavily into Mister Sinister's story. In Season 1, we see him take Nathaniel Summers and give him a techno-organic virus after awakening Madalyne Pryor, who becomes the Goblin Queen. While his arc with Bastion ends in Season 1, it gives the character more personality than we've seen in a while.
This alone has primed Mister Sinister to return in another capacity, such as live-action, because audiences now know who he is and how twisted he can be. While the Fox films tried to play the long game by introducing the character, they ultimately failed to deliver on a promise set up a decade ago.
Now, things are finally in place for Mister Sinister to have his time to shine and for the masses to see that there are other scary X-Men villains besides Sentinels and Magneto. With Adam Driver in the role, the character can become even more compelling as he lays the groundwork for big plans we probably won't see pay off for years, as these characters grow and fit into his sinister plan.
