Based on the late and inimitable Dame Jilly Cooper's novel of the same name, Rivals (2024) is the second book in her Rutshire Chronicles series, but like many anthology romances available on TV today, the second season doesn't follow a different book. We're still deep in the nuances of the first book in Rivals Season 2. Whether it'll conclude the story at the end of the year or if it'll adapt elements from the other books, only time will tell.

A large part of the appeal in Cooper's narrative worldbuilding is her indescribable means of pacing and delivering subtle, thought-provoking narratives for her ensemble cast. As an adaptation, the Hulu series not only understands it, but it utilizes sex, history, and tension to ensure character agency is of the utmost concern and to deliver complexities that make the romp a blast to dissect.

Season 2 is right around the corner, and here's everything fans need to remember before venturing back to the Cotswolds.

What Is 'Rivals' Season 2 About?

When we last left Rutshire, David Tennant's Tony Baddingham was bleeding out from a head wound inflicted by Nafessa Williams' Cameron Cook, and chaos had ensued everywhere with the rivalry involving Corinium and Venturer that also involved Declan O'Hara and Rupert Campbell-Black teaming up against Tony. But as Tennant cheekily reveals in the Rivals Season 2trailer, he's sorry he was late as "he had a terrible headache." Bold, wild, deliciously colorful, and brimming with longing, the trailer is a feast for the eyes that reminds us this fictional television war is far from over. It's only just begun, and with more episodes this season, we can be sure that the romp we fell in love with will be amplified.

As the official synopsis notes, "As rivalries push everyone to the brink, loyalties are tested, and hearts are broken in the pursuit of victory. But what is the true cost of war?" The most enriching stories about hard-fought battles, no matter how big or small, have always been about the people in the trenches and those standing beside them off the field. The way that Rivals has already touched on this idea within its first season is no small feat. The deeper we go, the more intense the testing of these relationships will be, and the character journeys they'll each go on will surely be the most rewarding part.

As someone who's seen the first five episodes, viewers are in for a wildly remarkable treat. The series knows that its appeal is the chaos and fire outpouring in every scene, and that much is the same in Rivals Season 2. It closely follows a portion of the book, drawing out various arcs to ensure that we get plenty of character development for each of the main players. The layers and nuance this decision adds ensure that there's no sophomore slump, and the tension crackles boldly in every moment.

Whatever details fans fell in love with in the first place are all present in the second season, even if some angles might be upsetting when we have to pace ourselves with weekly releases. There's enormous care placed in the screenplay to ensure that Cooper's stories are brought to life with the lush depth they deserve, and more than anything, that's what matters.

Who Is Returning In 'Rivals' Season 2?

The entire original cast will be returning alongside Tennant and Williams, meaning we'll be reuniting with Alex Hassell as Rupert Campbell Black, Bella Maclean as Taggie O'Hara, Aidan Turner as Declan O'Hara, Emily Atack as Sarah Stratton, Danny Dyer as Freddie Jones, Katherine Parkinson as Lizzie Vereker, Victoria Smurfit as Maud O'Hara, Luke Pasqualino as Bas Baddingham, Claire Rushbrook as Lady Monica Baddingham, Lisa McGrillis as Valerie Jones, Oliver Chris as James Vereker, and more.

In addition, Anastasia Griffith won't be returning as Rupert's ex-wife, Helen Gordon, and instead we'll have Hayley Atwell taking the role for Season 2. We'll also be meeting his children, Tabitha and Marcus. The series has also added Rupert Everett as Malise Gordon, Maxim Ays as Sebbie Carlisle, and Bobby Lockwood as Dommie Carlisle.
