Is The New Anthony Bourdain Biopic Realistic Or Just Another ‘Wiki Bio’ Film?
Tony (2026) is the retelling of a young Anthony Bourdain’s first real restaurant job, laying the groundwork for the impudent college student to become the caustic but empathetic world-famous chef. In some potential versions of the movie, the story would be a broad retelling of his life that played the hits before ending on a final message that summed up his life. However, that’s not what Tony does.
Instead, the movie is more of a self-contained coming-of-age story that uses Bourdain’s memoir and personality to help flesh out a more timeless story. It’s a specific tale that cuts or changes aspects of the true story, all in the name of reflecting the spirit of the subject matter without becoming too cloying in its depiction of his growth. It’s the kind of movie that eschews the typical tropes of the more standard “Wiki Bio” film, and it’s all the better for it.
How Realistic Is ‘Tony’?
Tony is inspired by true events instead of trying to painstakingly recreate them, giving the time-period biopic a more focused emotional core than a lot of the more traditional “Wiki Bio” films that have come out over the years. During an interview with Indie Wire, Tony Matt Johnson discussed his focus on the film. While Tony was directly inspired by some of the stories featured in Bourdain's memoir, Kitchen Confidential, the movie largely uses this as a springboard for an original story.
While the book mentions a girl that Tony followed to Cape Cod for a summer, the film expands her into the character of Nancy. While Tony did work at a few different restaurants in the seaside town, they were all combined into a single restaurant dubbed The Flagship. Even Chef, Tony's mentor, isn't necessarily real. Instead, he's an amalgamation of other figures from Bourdain's life. Although Tony isn’t 100% factually accurate, it’s focused on capturing the spirit of Anthony Bourdain and using it as the initial draw of a more universal and timeless coming-of-age story.
Tony Works as More Than Just a Biopic
Many biopics are focused on the achievements or mistakes of their focus characters. By contrast, Tony works less as a traditional real-life reimagining and more as a specific teen dramedy. Taking more cues from the likes of The Graduate (1967) and Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Tony and those films aren’t afraid to mine the teenage experience for laughs, love, and heartbreak, but also existential dread and the realization that growing up can be tough. Tony spends most of the film as an aggressive and selfish figure, dictating his interactions with others and dismissing those around him.
He’s the kind of guy who thinks he can rewrite the rules of literature and demand the respect of the college literary board, even when he hasn’t really written anything of note. He may hail from a very specific place and time, but Tony will feel familiar to anyone who went to a liberal arts college and saw someone with an ego that the real world had yet to invalidate. Tony is functionally a very familiar story of a cocky young man who realizes how much he still needs to grow up. It’s the underlying heart and craft in the execution that makes the movie compelling, not that it ends with the confirmation that Tony will grow up to be a famous chef.
“Wiki Bios” Aren't Nearly as Compelling as Slice of Life Films
Biopics are a tricky beast for filmmakers, especially because of how successful they can be. However, some of that success often comes at the expense of creative identity. Movies like Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) and Michael (2026) play the hits and recount the notable moments of their subject matter’s lives, without ever really taking the time to delve deeper into their personalities or characters. Maybe it’s because they are so firmly based on real-life people and rely on the input of the survivors of those stories, but there’s nothing that feels challenging or prickly or even real about those sanitized versions of the story. There’s probably a great version of Michael that gives Jaafar Jackson’s impression an actual arc to explore.
However, Michael was content to play the hits and give audiences the simple feel-good version of his story. The result was a critical flop that exceeded expectations financially to become a blockbuster hit for Lionsgate. By contrast, Tony doesn’t show a great impression of Anthony Bourdain while an actor recounts his most notable moments from documentaries and books. Instead, Tony is a more focused and emotionally rich movie because of the focus it affords its main character. A “Wiki Bio” is a movie that may appeal to fans who want to relive the highlights, but more cutting slice-of-life movies like Tony are far more compelling and memorable.
