5 Reasons Jean Grey Is The Most Powerful X-Men Character (And It's Not Even Close)

2026 has been the year of Jean Grey. Between her return in X-Men ‘97 (2024) and her MCU debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), plenty of people are just now coming to terms with who she is and how strong she really is. Casual fans may be more familiar with Wolverine, Deadpool, and even Cyclops, but real fans know that Jean Grey can beat them all without much effort. In fact, she’s probably the strongest X-Men character out there. 

Jean Grey has been designated an Omega-level mutant in the comics, which means that her telepathic powers are so strong that they can’t be measured. Jean isn’t the only Omega-level mutant—Storm and Iceman were both also classified as Omega-level mutants early—but there has been plenty of evidence that she’s leagues stronger than them or any other Omega mutant. All you have to do is pick up some comics or go see some of the X-Men movies on Disney+, and you’ll see firsthand why she’s such a powerhouse. Here are five of her most notable feats across all fiction.

1) Professor X Had to Restrict Her Powers

The Dark Phoenix Saga is usually considered to be the definitive Jean Grey story. While there’s plenty to be said about her connection with the Phoenix Force, which we will definitely get into later, one tidbit that often gets overlooked by fans is that the story reveals that Professor X had to restrict her powers for most of her life to control her. 

Jean was always a powerful telepath, and even as a child she could use that telepathy for some truly incredible feats, like experiencing the sensation of death when her close friend died and lifting an entire neighborhood of cars without any effort. After meeting Professor X, one of the first things he did was put up psychic blockers that restricted Jean’s access to her powers. Depending on who’s writing Charles, or who’s playing him in the movies, he either put those blockers in place out of an abundance of caution for her telepathic abilities, or afraid of what she’s capable of if left unregulated. If Charles Xavier, one of the premier telepaths of the Marvel universe, is afraid of a child, that speaks miles to how strong she was, even at a young age.

2) Overpowered Both Magneto and Professor X

Professor X had every right to be afraid of Jean, as when her powers matured, she was able to not only overwhelm Professor X’s psionic abilities, but break through Magneto’s telepathic blockers that even Professor X has difficulty breaching.

In the comics and films, Jean has frequently been shown to overpower Professor X’s telepathy. Whether it’s forcing him to walk in Dark Phoenix (2019) against his will, breaking his own psychic blockers and delving into his mind, or atomizing him in X-Men: The Last Stand (2019), not even the strongest telepath on Earth can stop her mental capabilities. As for Magneto, one of the reasons Professor X hasn’t been able to stop his old ally is because his helmet was designed to prevent psionic attacks, preventing Professor X from manipulating him for decades. As for Jean, there have been a handful of times where she was able to break past its defenses. Considering how Magneto is also an Omega-level mutant, if she can overwhelm him, few can stand up to her telepathy.

3) Stopped Cyclops From Using His Concussive Blasts

Cyclops is an interesting mutant. He’s powerful, and his powers don’t really turn off. They’re restricted via his visors, but the second he takes them off, he can unleash concussive blasts that can stop characters like the Juggernaut and even the Hulk in their tracks.

This interdimensional power is incredibly impressive in its own right, but Jean’s ability to stop it is equally impressive. In X-Men: The Last Stand, as Jean and Cyclops are having a tender moment, she takes off his glasses and looks him in the eyes, using her telepathy to restrict his abilities. What makes this even more noteworthy is that she doesn’t even look like she’s exerting herself during the scene. Her focus is entirely on him, and this is only a few seconds after her coming back to life. Jean killing Cyclops immediately after that is somewhat irrelevant, because by that point, his powers have been rendered completely inert and unable to resist her. Taking a blast from Cyclops is one thing, but shutting him down with no effort is another thing entirely. 

4) Her Telepathy Can Reach Anyone on Earth

Spider-Man: Brand New Day really emphasized Jean Grey’s telepathic abilities in a way that the films rarely explore. As a telepath, she can control others from a distance—specifically 33 feet in the film—as well as speak through them, but that’s only a fraction of what she’s actually capable of. 

In Brand New Day, after she was experimented on by Damage Control, her powers enabled her to paralyze a large portion of New York City and potentially millions of people in an act that’s reminiscent of the Void’s rampage in Thunderbolts* (2025). Spider-Man should be considered lucky, though, since in the comics, she can telepathically reach every person on planet Earth. She can communicate through people, read their minds, and even appear in front of people via astral projection. Sure, Professor X also has the potential to scan anyone on Earth, but he needs his powers boosted by Cerebro, a device made primarily for Professor X to enhance his powers; but Jean has a much greater range without extra tools.

5) She Houses The Phoenix Force

We’ve been dancing around this point the whole time, but the thing that makes Jean Grey so absurdly powerful is her connection to the Phoenix Force. Jean is strong without it, but with it she’s unstoppable. 

The Phoenix Force is a cosmic entity that’s on the same scale as other powerful Marvel cosmic figures like the Beyonder, Galactus, and Eternity, the living embodiment of the universe. It can wipe out all life in the universe and rewrite reality itself, and while its strength is dependent on who it’s bonded to, it’s fully compatible with Jean. You know the Phoenix Force is powerful when destroying stars is seen as one of its low-tier abilities. Even if you do somehow manage to kill Jean Grey while she has the Phoenix Force, she’s effectively immortal and can be revived by the Phoenix. X-Men: The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix both only scratched the surface of how dangerous the Phoenix Force is. X-Men (1992) does a better job. Still, even then, the Phoenix Force is an incalculably strong power that enhances Jean’s already strong abilities, making her not only the strongest X-Man, but one of the strongest characters in all of Marvel.
