Firefly is coming back! The cult classic space Western has remained on the minds of fans since its debut in 2002. Even when it was canceled, fans rallied, leading to a film, comics, and novelizations. Now in 2026, the love for the world created by Joss Whedon continues as the cast has announced that an animated series is in development.
But where do you start if you’ve never watched Firefly? Or maybe you’re looking to board the Serenity again after years away. Either way, we’ve got a full run-down to prepare you for the Firefly reboot in five days. And yes, the movie and comics will come into play as we dive into the proper order and not the one the studios wanted that destroyed the series in the first place.
What Is ‘Firefly’ About And Why Was It Canceled?
Firefly only ran for one season in 2002. Created by Joss Whedon, it is set in the year 2157, after humans had traveled the stars and discovered new galaxies. It focuses on the crew of the Serenity, which is a Firefly-class transport vessel. This crew lives on the outskirts of society and is all running from something.
The series consists of 14 episodes, with only 11 airing during its run. And it was doomed from the start because of the mismanagement of the series. Executives weren’t convinced that Whedon’s “Serenity” episode should be the Pilot. So, “The Train Job” became the pilot episode and “Serenity” became the 11th episode. As if things couldn’t get worse, three other episodes aired out of order, leading to an inconsistent storyline and dooming the series.
The eventual DVD release of Firefly Season 1 gave the series new life and a dedicated fanbase. In 2005, Whedon and Universal Pictures premiered Serenity, a movie continuation of the series.
What Do We Know About The ‘Firefly’ Revival?
During an appearance at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., Firefly star Nathan Fillion revealed that an animated series based on the beloved series is in advanced development. This revelation happened during a live taping of his podcast Once We Were Spacemen alongside co-stars Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau. All of them are expected to reprise their roles, including Adam Baldwin, who wasn’t present.
The animated series is set between the TV series and the movie, and it’s being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 with 20th Television Animation. As for the showrunner, Whedon isn’t returning for the animated series. Instead, he’s given his blessing for married writing-producing team Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters to serve as showrunners.
Deadline shared a first look at the animated versions of the cast, which feature Zoë, Inara, Mal, Jayne, and River. The early concept art is in development with the Oscar and Emmy-award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine.
The Correct ‘Firefly’ Watch Order, Explained
When it comes to the correct order to watch Firefly, Joss Whedon made sure to present it in the correct order for the DVD release. As for the comics and books that followed, it’s important to remember that there are nine original novels and comics from Boom! Studios and Dark Horse Comics. For this post, I’m going to go through the comics that most help bridge the gap between the series and the movie.
Here’s the correct order to watch the TV series Firefly and the movie Serenity.
“Serenity”
“The Train Job”
“Bushwhacked”
“Shindig”
“Safe”
“Our Mrs. Reynolds”
“Jaynestown”
“Out of Gas”
“Ariel”
“War Stories”
“Trash”
“The Message”
“Heart of Gold”
“Objects in Space”
Serenity (the movie)
In respect to the comics, start with Serenity: Those Left Behind, which helps bridge the show’s ending and the movie, with the Serenity crew trying to earn money to disappear for a little bit. Things go from bad to worse when they find out that the mission they take on was orchestrated by an old enemy.
Then there’s Serenity: Better Days. It follows Those Left Behind and sees one of the Serenity’s own being kidnapped and tortured. The crew has to set everything aside, even the money they were supposed to make, to save them.
Finally, we have Serenity: Leaves on the Wind. Set after the movie Serenity, our beloved crew has been in hiding ever since. When they’re forced to come out of hiding, more secrets come to light, and they face the Alliance. Again.
The Best Way To Watch ‘Firefly’ 5 Days
To best understand Firefly, you don’t have to binge-watch it. In fact, consuming it in this order, with a little space in between each batch, will allow you time to take things in a little better. This show is about more than a ragtag group of outsiders on a ship; it’s about the fight against order that oppresses, laws that strip away rights, and those who do what they have to survive.
Day 1
“Serenity”
“The Train Job”
“Bushwhacked”
With the pilot episode of Firefly basically being the same length as the movie, we’re starting strong with “Serenity.” Here we’re introduced to our crew. But more importantly, we’re introduced to the actual world that they live in. “The Train Job” is great and all, but it doesn’t set the stage for the world they live in. “Serenity” tells us about the Unification War, the Battle at Serenity Valley, the Alliance, the Reavers, and gives us a clear understanding of who these people are at their core.
Day 2
“Shindig”
“Safe”
“Our Mrs. Reynolds”
“Jaynestown”
Now that the setup is out of the way, Firefly starts to have a little more fun in these episodes. But we also get to explore the gentler side of these crew members, because they have hopes and dreams, even when they’re on the outskirts of society. These episodes also bring in some big guest stars that you might recognize from Mad Men (2007) and Supernatural (2005).
Day 3
“Out of Gas”
“Ariel”
“War Stories”
Halfway through your Firefly watch, these three episodes are considered some of the best in the series. It’s not just because of the flashbacks, either. These episodes see the crew tested in ways that prove they belong on this ship and that Mal is their captain for a reason.
Day 4
“Trash”
“The Message”
“Heart of Gold”
“Objects in Space”
These last four episodes mark the tail end of the singular season in preparation for the movie. But “Trash,” “The Message,” and “Heart of Gold” are the episodes that didn’t air during their original TV run. Considering these episodes featured returning characters and more background story for Inara, they’re essential to the overall story.
Day 5
Serenity (movie)
There’s a reason why Serenity is relegated to its own day on this watch breakdown for Firefly. Even though it has all of our favorite characters, the tone is a little darker. That’s not to say the show hasn’t dealt with dark and complex issues during its run. It did. But the movie doesn’t hold back in a way where no one is safe. That includes our crew.
