There are obviously plenty of advantages to growing up as the daughter of one of the most famous rock stars on earth, but in her career as an actress, Eve Hewson has been beating the nepo baby allegations with each passing role.

The Irish actress adds another substantial one to that list this summer with her dazzling turn in Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day — a UFO-focused sci-fi movie in which she plays a Christian-curious young woman who experiences a crisis of faith after learning that we might not be alone in the universe after all.

If you’ve just experienced the movie and are keen to check out more of Hewson’s work, I’ve rounded up six essential roles to get you started — a list that runs the gamut from bingeable crime dramas and buzzy thrillers to indie gems and prestige supporting roles.

Read on to learn a little more about each one and use the guide below to find out where to stream them on services like AppleTV, Netflix, Prime Video and elsewhere.

Enough Said

2013

Hewson's movie career began in earnest with brief appearances in the crime drama Blood Ties (alongside Clive Owen) and in Paolo Sorrentino’s This Must Be the Place (with Sean Penn), but her first substantial bit of screen time came in the bittersweet 2013 rom-com Enough Said.

Directed by Nicole Holofcener, the movie stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) as a masseuse who accidentally starts a relationship with a friend’s ex-husband, played by James Gandolfini (The Sopranos). As Tess, the daughter of Gandolfini’s character, Hewson got to share a few funny and tender scenes with two legends of American television and more than held her own.

Hewson followed that early success by landing a part in The Knick, an early streaming gem (starring, yet again, Clive Owen) that focussed on the sometimes grizzly inner-workings of a New York hospital in the early days of the 20th century.

The show ran for only two seasons and 20 episodes, but all of them were shot, edited and directed by the great Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Out of Sight). In the show, Hewson featured as Lucy Elkins: an initially green around-the-gills nurse who gets perhaps the most compelling arc of any character in the series.

After collaborating with Holofcener and Soderbergh, Hewson had her first experience working with Spielberg when she played the daughter of Tom Hanks’ lawyer in Bridge of Spies. She also played Maid Marian in an unfortunately misjudged action reimagining of Robin Hood in 2018, but it wasn’t long before she landed her next solid role in Tesla, a biopic about the legendary inventor (who was famously played by David Bowie in The Prestige) directed by and starring Ethan Hawke.

For this one, Hewson played the real life figure Anne Morgan, the wealthy daughter of the banker J.P. Morgan, and got to share some key scenes with both Hawke (in the title role) and Kyle MacLachlan (as Thomas Edison).

By 2021, Hewson had racked up enough credits with established directors to convince the doubters, but her performance in the 2021 Netflix thriller Behind Her Eyes confirmed her as an actress to watch.

For this gripping six-episode miniseries, Hewson played Adele, the elusive wife of a psychiatrist (Tom Bateman) who starts to have an affair with the show’s protagonist (Simona Brown). It would be sacrilege to give too much away, but we can say that some of the show’s best sequences arrive during Adele's flashbacks to her time spent in rehab with a man named Rob.

That role is played by Robert Aramayo, and if you appreciated his recent Bafta-winning turn in I Swear or the great work he’s been doing in Rings of Power, I can't recommend going back to see him and Hewson together in this one highly enough.

Bad Sisters

2022

For many, Hewson really "arrived" as an actress with Bad Sisters in 2022 — an Irish dark comedy in which she played Becka, the youngest of the central siblings and the sister to Sharon Horgan’s Eva and Anne-Marie Duff’s Grace.

The story plays out over two timelines, one set before Grace’s abusive husband, John Paul, dies, and the other in the months that follow — at which point the sisters are under investigation for his murder. As crime setups go, it’s a bit of a doozy, but the show is also a great showcase for Horgan’s abilities as a comedy writer — which you might already be familiar with thanks to her previous show, Catastrophe.

Also, if you're a fan of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, make sure to keep an eye out for Peter Claffey’s breakout turn in Season 2 — in which he plays Becka’s potential new squeeze.

If you’ve ever seen a John Carney movie (think Once, Sing Street or Begin Again) you will know exactly what to expect from Flora and Son. You will also probably end up agreeing that knowing what's in store in his movies is no bad thing at all.

In this one, Hewson is probably guilty of a little cultural appropriation for agreeing to play a working class single mom who uses music to connect with her teenage son, but the performance packs enough charm to win you over.

The Carney approach — in which a character’s real world problems are soothed by the writing and performing of music — can be predictable and cheesy, but it also delivers something as warm and comforting as an old sweater, and Flora and Son is no different.
