VisionQuest (2026) is not only the end of a trilogy that started with WandaVision (2021), but it also marks the return of a character we haven't seen since Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015): Ultron. That latter part is the biggest lure of this series, as he's a villain that people connected with due to James Spader's magnetic performance.

Now, with Ultron back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the main question is how he even returned in the first place. With a story that seemingly ended so definitively, it's fascinating that such a dangerous villain was kept alive. Yet, with his return confirmed, it opens the door to wondering what comes next.

How Did Ultron Survive ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’?

Avengers: Age of Ultron saw Tony Stark and Bruce Banner creating the blueprint for Ultron AI, but it was the Mind Stone that gave him sentience to the point that he went rogue with his goal of saving humanity by destroying it. This led to a rash of attacks, as the Avengers had to think faster than a cosmic supercomputer.

This conflict culminated in the creation of Vision, an antithesis to Ultron, and the Battle of Sokovia, where Ultron lifted an entire country with the goal of dropping it on Earth like an asteroid. Though his plan failed, Sokovia was destroyed. In the end, Vision closed out Ultron from escaping into the internet, while the Avengers destroyed all of his drones.

It was Vision who delivered the kill shot on the final drone but, as revealed in VisionQuest, Vision saved a copy of Ultron's data and kept it locked away in his mind. While Ultron never got out, he was still there waiting in the shadows, and now that this new Vision is here, we are finally seeing what he has been up to—which was reading and learning more about the world while in isolation. But a character like Ultron will never be a hero, so it's a matter of wondering what he's planning with his newfound privileges.

Ultron’s Presence Has Always Existed In The MCU

While Ultron was never dead in the MCU, he couldn’t get out of Vision's mind, and that was by his design. Trapping him in the mind of a hero was a genius move and very in line with how the characters act. But even though Ultron couldn't get out, that didn't mean his presence wasn't felt in the MCU.

For example, in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), we saw Spider-Man snooping in a Damage Control truck where he pulled out an Ultron drone head. With the eyes still glowing red, it felt like a wink to the idea that Ultron was still out there in the data, waiting for his time to strike. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) even had Queen Ramonda comment on how AI could take over due to how advanced Griot was. Of course, this was only a passing joke, and yet not out of the realm of possibility in this canon.

What If…? (2021-2014) had many episodes that alluded to Ultron and his influence, but the most famous one saw him succeeding in making Vision his new body. Combined with his vibranium armor, Ultron harnessed the Infinity Stones and became Infinity Ultron. He even helped the Exiles in the series finale, showing that no matter the universe, Ultron is always around.

Ultron’s Return Opens Many Doors For the Iconic Avengers Villain

Ultron in VisionQuest

Ultron finding a way to come back is a huge choice on many levels, both for Marvel villains and for Ultron himself. Over the decades, Marvel has always had a knack for killing its antagonists at the end of the film. As a result, it's rare for the good guys to ever have a history with their villains, and that's why it was such a shock when a villain like Zemo was able to return down the line.

With Ultron coming back, it shows that not all villain deaths are permanent, which feels perfectly in line with the comics. If any villain can return, it should be Ultron, since he's an AI, and as long as the internet is a thing, his return would make absolute sense. Now he's back and is more dangerous than ever!

We may not know what's next for Ultron or if VisionQuest could end with his death again, but if not, it means that Ultron has a chance to die and return time and again, and with fewer heroes aware of his capabilities, the harder it would be to stop him. Ultron coming back was only one surprise; now the question is what the MCU will do with him.
