‘VisionQuest’ Confirmed That Vision Kept A World-Ending Secret To Himself For Years
VisionQuest (2026) is completing a Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy that started with WandaVision and finally gives the Vision a story focused entirely on him. It also explores the various AIs of the MCU, including J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and Ultron.
In a recent interview, Ultron actor James Spader mentioned that while his character died in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), he was actually alive in the Vision's mind the entire time, stating: "He's had access to the internet, television, history, and he's just been consuming, and he's been painting." But with the villain alive, it also confirms the Vision held a dark secret for years.
Fans Never Believed Ultron Was Dead in the MCU
Part of the nature of a character like Ultron is that he can't be completely killed. Being an AI, it took him being shut out of the web while also getting all of his drones killed to ensure his defeat in Age of Ultron. But even when he was beaten, there was a lingering doubt that this wasn’t the end of the villain.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) was one of the many teases in the MCU regarding Ultron's presence, as Peter, while in a Damage Control semi, found an Ultron drone head with the lights still glowing red. There was still something in that machine, even if we never got it answered.
Even Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2023) would continue to tease the threat of AI taking over with passing comments, alluding to a possible return of Ultron. Being that he was never truly killed in the comics either, the stage was set for his return even if the MCU hadn't planned for it.

In reality, fans were right to think Ultron was around but not in the way any of us could've thought. Realistically, it should've been a no-brainer, but because Vision was made in Ultron's image and was meant to be his vessel, Ultron was part of the code that made up his brainwaves. As a result, when Vision enters his mind, we see Ultron there, contained in Vision's code with no way of escape.
While this is an obvious realization, it is also a fun surprise; it also proves that Vision was capable of keeping this secret to himself for years. While working with the Avengers, he never told anyone that if there's a part of Ultron that's alive, it's in him. It's easily the most questionable thing he ever did, and yet, it also proves that he didn't need help to stop Ultron.
Plus, when Shuri was trying ot get the Mind Stone out of Vision, she never noticed any malicious Ultron code either. There are a lot of reasons Vision should've said something, and just as many more that justify why he never had to. It also confirms how strong the Vision always was.

Knowing that Ultron has been in his mind this whole time and held at bay by the Vision without anyone knowing shows just how crafty and strong Vision is, as he has fought a constant battle against his father for years. When it comes to powers, Vision has always been a threat, as he can phase through walls and also has incredible strength and density when needed. But it was never enough to see him ranked with some other powerhouses.
