Not only is VisionQuest (2016) the final entry in a trilogy that began with WandaVision (2021), but it also continues the story of the Maximoff twins as it left off in Agatha All Along (2024). However, one of the larger things that most people forget is that there are even Maximoff twins to begin with.

One of the many things that made WandaVision so great was seeing her come into her power and embrace her ability to rewrite reality in any way she wanted. This also led to her bringing back Vision after he died and making two sons, but how are they still alive?

How Did Wanda Erase Billy and Tommy Maximoff?

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Wanda Maximoff had to identify the body of Vision, who was dissected on multiple tables. Unable to bring his body home, she went to what was supposed to be their home in Westview, where she had a nervous breakdown and unleashed a hex that resurrected Vision and enslaved everyone in town.

Wanda eventually got pregnant in WandaVision and gave birth to two boys, Billy and Tommy. They grew up fast and showed they had powers: Tommy with super speed and Billy with magic. But when Agatha Harkness revealed herself, she also revealed that Wanda tied Vision and her kids to the Hex, and the minute Wanda dropped it, they would go away too.

At the end of her battle with Agatha, Wanda decided to do what was right by freeing those in Westview and dropping the Hex. With a tearful thank you to her sons, she allowed them to go to bed one last time before they were erased alongside the rest of the Hex and Vision. But with Wanda being as strong as she is, parts of her sons weren't entirely gone, leading to a major revelation in Agatha All Along.

What Kept the Twins From Dying After 'WandaVision'?

Billy Maximoff

When a young boy dubbed "Teen" meets with Agatha and puts them on the Witch's Road, we, as viewers, are none the wiser until "Teen" reveals he not only has power, but also a crown similar to Wanda Maximoff's. From there, we learn that the teenager, William Kaplan, died in a car accident at the same time Wanda's Hex fell. In that split second, Billy's spirit entered the teen, reviving him in a body he never knew, with memories he couldn't trust.

Billy only wants to find his brother, Tommy, who isn't technically alive yet. As a result, Agatha aids him in finding a body that is close to death, and as the person drowns, Billy helps Tommy's spirit find the body. It's a dark moment where Billy asks if he's killing someone to save his brother, and we never get a clear answer.

In essence, it was Billy's latest advancement in magic, tied to his mother's power, that gave him the strength to survive and find a new body, and it was also Billy who gave his brother a new body. It teases just how powerful the young boy is, but also how unique both kids are.

Could the Twins' Survival Also Tease Wanda's Survival in the MCU?

Wanda as Scarlet Witch in Wandavision

The fact that the twins survived so much thanks to Billy's magic speaks volumes about his power as the son of the Scarlet Witch. Yet, another issue that has plagued the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the fate of Wanda Maximoff, who seemingly died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).

If her son can be strong enough to push his spirit into another body, it makes less sense that his much stronger mother, strengthened by the Darkhold, can't have even a latent failsafe to avoid death. If Billy can survive erasure from existence, then Wanda has an even greater chance at living.

The answer to what happened to Wanda could come in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) with Doctor Doom's Latverian Witches, but even if she's there, it doesn't excuse how long we've been without such a powerful character in the MCU. As her sons come into their own gifts and Vision is reborn, it would only make sense that Wanda also gets her own glow-up and grand return just in time for the end of the Multiverse as we know it.
