Netflix's New Serial Killer Thriller: 'The Whisper Man's Ending, Explained
Netflix's 2026 crime thriller, The Whisper Man, puts a new spin on the familiar serial killer story. Frank Carter (Michael Keaton), better known as the Whisper Man, has been behind bars for years, but a new murder that looks exactly like one of his old crimes suggests that someone is carrying on his work. That becomes a much bigger problem for Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott) when his son Jake is kidnapped.
Tom turns to his estranged father, retired detective Pete Willis (Robert De Niro), who was the man responsible for catching Frank many years ago. As Tom and Pete investigate, they discover that the new killer has a personal connection to Frank. By the time they figure out who it is, Jake (Acston Luca Porto) is already in danger.
Who Is The New Whisper Man?
The movie spends a good amount of time making crime enthusiast Norman Collins (Hamish Linklater) look guilty since he's obsessed with serial killers. He also has a house filled with murder memorabilia and is caught inside Tom's basement. But Norman isn't the one who took Jake. Tom and Pete eventually find the remains of Frank's former accomplice, whom Norman admits to killing.
Before Norman dies by suicide, he reveals that he paid Frank by connecting him with someone else on the outside. That person turns out to be Francis Carter Jr. (Owen Teague), Frank's son, who has spent most of his life trying to understand his father. He eventually starts copying Frank's crimes as the new Whisper Man to prove himself to the man who never gave him the attention he wanted.
While trying to figure out Frank's motive for killing random children, Pete eventually realizes that Frank, who was a victim of sexual abuse as a child, actually wanted to kill his own son. But since murdering Francis was too close to home, Frank covered his victims' faces so that he could imagine strangling his own child without actually doing it.
When Francis finally meets Frank at the end of The Whisper Man, his father initially says he would like to bond with him. But that turns out to be a ruse as Frank strangles his son in the same manner he killed all his other victims. While the film doesn't explicitly explain why he killed Francis J., the implication is that he saw his own weakness and vulnerabilities in him and wanted to destroy them.
Who Is Jake's Imaginary Friend In The Blue Sweater?
The Whisper Man leaves its strangest reveal until the very end. After everything is over, Tom looks through some of Jake's favorite things and finds a photograph of his late wife, Rebecca, as a child. In that picture, Rebecca is wearing the same blue sweater as the mysterious girl Jake's been seeing throughout the movie. That strongly suggests that the girl is Jake's mother.
But The Whisper Man doesn't give a definitive explanation for what she actually is. She could be Rebecca's spirit watching over her son. She could also be an imaginary version of her that Jake created while trying to process his mother's death. The film leaves room for both possibilities to be true since Jake was visibly struggling with the loss before he was kidnapped.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the film's director, James Ashcroft, explained why he wanted to keep the reveal vague. "We wanted to keep it intentionally ambiguous," he said. "I believe in the natural and the supernatural world. Even though the main question and the theme of the film is about fathers and sons, it's very important to have that guiding presence of the mother always being there."
The reveal also gives Jake's story a hopeful ending. In the final moments of The Whisper Man, the story suggests that the girl (whether supernatural or mental construct) was there when he needed her most. But Jake is now starting to move forward on his own. After surviving so much trauma, he finally seems ready to live with his grief rather than remain trapped in it.
