Obsession (2026) has earned its place as the biggest horror movie of the year so far, and the word-of-mouth success tied to a man wishing that his crush loved him more than anything has been incredible. However, as scary as the movie is, people don’t really dissect the scariest scenes tied to Nikki’s interactions with Bear.

We all think back to Nikki’s unsettling breakdown in a dark corner or her creepy walking scenes because they are shocking, unsettling, and often downright terrifying to many. But the one emotion that isn’t felt and should be is sadness, as these frightening scenes mean so much more than a way to make audiences shriek.

'Obsession's Creepy Nikki Moments Are A Fight For Control

While there are many creepy moments in Obsession, there are a few iconic scenes, in particular, that represent a major fight for control. The first is when Bear wakes up to Nikki in the corner, crying about how Bear doesn’t seem to care about her and the lack of mutual feelings. In a moment, she rushes off and comes back with a flower, acting strangely throughout and moving like a possessed person.

In reality, Nikki was fighting for control of her body, and it wouldn’t be a shock to think that her running off was her getting control back and trying to leave the apartment. Second was the moment she stabbed herself in the face with a bottle after regaining control. It’s scary but also sad because it’s Nikki resorting to self-harm to fight for her autonomy.

Finally, the iconic moment when Nikki walks backward eerily and then rushes at Bear after saying she wouldn’t hurt him. It seems like the wish is fracturing, but in reality, Nikki is backing away from his “love” and is prepared to attack him to gain her freedom. Everything Nikki does is a fight, but to us, it’s utterly terrifying.

The One Wish Willow's Rules Make Nikki's Scenes More Upsetting

One Wish Willow from Obsession

Director Curry Barker established that Obsession’s One Wish Willow isn’t a cursed object, and there are no catches. If you wish for two bottles of water, you will get two bottles of water. Bear’s problem is that his wish, at its core, was dark and shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Nikki fought hard to escape and fight back before she resorted to begging to die, and the worst part is that we see this in the scariest scenes. It’s heartbreaking to see someone caged in their own body fighting to get out, but it also shows just how strong a person Nikki is. That’s why there’s a tragedy to the film that’s more evident upon rewatch. We catch the moments she’s fighting for control on the first viewing, but the second viewing reveals even more and makes us realize the twisting of themes in the movie that make moments we should root for Nikki, moments we want to hide from her.

'Obsession' Plays On Mirroring Ideas To Sell Its Horror

Bear talking on the phone in Obsession

Obsession works so well on a thematic level because it takes ideas we are familiar with and turns them on their head. With love, we are used to movies about the quiet guy getting the girl of his dreams through being himself, and this film uses those tropes to show that some nice guys aren’t that at all.

Midway through the movie, it’s nearly impossible to find out who is a truly good person, as we don’t even know if Sarah’s words about Nikki were true or just a way to get closer to Bear or if Nikki actually cared about Bear in the first place. Everything is messy and confusing because real love is. The only constant is that you can’t force someone to love you.

This mirroring of ideas continues to be prevalent throughout Nikki’s fight for her body because, in her mind, she’s doing everything clearly and fighting heroically so we can root for her. But in the real world, she’s utterly terrifying to see because we don’t know who is in control or what will happen. Obsession twists our basic ideas of romance and horror to show a messy truth that makes Nikki’s fight utterly heartbreaking because even as we see it happen, all we can do is scream.
