'Obsession's Car Scene Was Originally Much Worse (And We Could Still See It)
Curry Barker’s Obsession (2026) took the cinematic world by storm, thanks to its ability to take a simple premise and make it utterly terrifying. When a young man, Bear, wishes for his crush, Nikki, to love him more than anyone, things seem fine until she begins to act more and more volatilly.
One of the most shocking moments was when Nikki killed her friend, Sarah, because she was talking to Bear in a car alone at night. The scene itself was wildly violent, but it was explained by Sarah’s actor, Megan Lawless, that it was actually much worse, and we might get to see it in a director’s cut.
’Obsession’ Delivered a Death Scene Too Violent to Show in Theaters
Following Obsession’s shocking party scene, Bear gets a text from his friend, Sarah, to talk to him in private. When he sneaks off to see her, the two share a deeply personal moment where Sarah tries to confess her feelings, but also gets her final letter to a college she applied to.
As the two start to get closer, Nikki headbutts the window and bashes Sarah’s face in with a brick. After that, she goes to Bear in the passenger seat and tells him everything will be okay and not to worry. The scene was already shocking, but actress Megan Lawless explains how much worse the cut version was.
In an interview with the Sam Roberts Show, she mentions that the TIFF version was longer, and so wasn’t the bashing. She also stated: “Curry had me do ADR of me making gurgling noises…” thus implying that as Nikki coddled Bear, Sarah was still alive and choking on her blood. The reason the scene was cut was so that when Obsession hit theaters, it wouldn’t get an NC-17 rating.
’Obsession’ Joins a Group of Horror Films That Had to Tone the Violence Down
Obsession’s dialed-down murder scene isn’t the first time that we’ve seen horror movies that have to cut back on what was originally shown to ensure a wider release. In fact, Obsession now sits with a collection of other iconic horror films that have done the same and still become legendary.
One iconic example is from Wes Craven’s Scream (1996). The opening scene featured an extended look at Casey’s boyfriend being killed on screen, which was dialed back heavily. But that has nothing on the scenes dialed back in The Evil Dead (1981), specifically the dismemberment scenes. Sam Raimi’s movie was already banned, but the fact that its violence against deadites was toned down proves just how wild the movie could’ve been.
John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) also had much more gore from the creature tied to the kennel scene and more grotesque transformations that were toned down. Event Horizon (1997) also cut a version of the Hell sequence that involved mutilation and bodies melting to avoid an NC-17 rating.
A Director’s Cut of ’Obsession’ is Exactly What 2026’s Biggest Horror Film Needs
Megan Lawless’ explanation of how much more graphic her death scene was also confirmed that Obsession would be getting a director’s cut. That’s not something a movie as short and sweet as this one would be expected to get. But these extended and added scenes will be a chance for people to experience the exact vision Barker had that he showed during TIFF.
Director’s cuts aren’t always needed, and some can completely change the film. But in the case of Obsession, a longer cut can add even more personality or provide context to elements that weren’t as evident in the theatrical release. This could even include what happens to Nikki following the end of the film.
With Barker now taking on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, seeing the range he has with gore and the limits he will go might even ease some wary minds. There’s no denying that Obsession was a huge moment for cinema, and to see it again in a way that feels like the first time is exciting. When a complete film has to remove elements, it can be shocking, and now Obsession will have a director’s cut that will finally let fans see Curry Barker’s film the way it was meant to be seen.
