'Obsession's Director Confirmed What Happens To Nikki - But One Thing Could Change It

The 2026 psychological horror film Obsession is still making a ton of money at the global box office. And the people who've already seen it have been wondering what might happen to Nikki Freeman (Inde Navarrette) after the credits roll. According to the film's director, Curry Barker, the character is doomed to suffer even further.

Speaking to CinemaBlend about Obsession, which sees Baron "Bear" Bailey (Michael Johnston) use an occult toy called the One Wish Willow to force Nikki to love him, Curry explained that although she survived the ordeal, Nikki would likely end up spending the rest of her life behind bars. "She's probably going to prison for a very long time," he said.

Curry went on to offer reasons for Nikki's incarceration. "There's also like a billion dollars in Ian's house, and Ian's dead on the floor. So she's connected to that money in some way," he said. "Who knows what the cops are gonna kind of put together as the story. But she's not going to have a very good life, I don't think. It's very sad."

For some context, in case you haven't seen the movie yet, Bear's warped attempt at romance turns Nikki into an increasingly erratic and violent person, who has little respite from the influence of the wish. By the end of the movie, Bear is dead, and his friend Ian, who used another One Wish Willow to give himself a billion dollars, is dead too.

A Victim Still Treated Like A Villain

Nikki, who is no longer under the influence of Bear's wish, is left standing in the wreckage. It's a bleak place to leave a character who spent most of the story stripped of agency. What bothers me most about Curry's confirmation of Nikki's fate is the tone behind it. There is a sense of detachment, even mild amusement, in how Nikki's future is reduced to a logistical problem.

That framing is hard to reconcile with what she actually went through in the context of the film. Nikki was never a willing participant in the violence that defines the second half of Obsession. She is someone whose autonomy is removed entirely, whose behavior is dictated by an external force, and who briefly regains clarity only long enough to beg for release.

Treating her outcome as an inevitability rather than a tragedy flattens that reality. It shifts the focus away from the fact that she is a victim of abuse and places it instead on the consequences she will face for surviving it. Horrifically, that perspective does not exist in a vacuum. It echoes a broader real-world pattern where women who experience domestic abuse are met with skepticism.

Saying Nikki would be jailed because of a story that was "put together" instead of getting a chance to explain what happened is horrific. If Bear's car was stolen, would he immediately be a suspect? But Nikki is left to carry the consequences of what was done to her, and even outside the film, the expectation is that no one would listen.

The Case That Could Set Nikki Free

For all the certainty around Nikki's fate, Obsession actually does leave room for a different outcome. The existence of the One Wish Willow is not presented as a secret known only to a select few. Ian (Cooper Tomlinson) is able to use it, and there is a general sense that its legitimacy is understood, at least in certain circles. That alone introduces a path that the story does not fully explore.

In court, Nikki's defense wouldn't only need to rely on her (limited) recollection of events. The mechanics of the Willow can be demonstrated. Paid volunteers could be brought in to make controlled wishes in court, replicating the cause-and-effect relationship that defines the object. That kind of evidence, combined with witness testimonies, would allow a pattern of influence to be established.

Once that influence is acknowledged, with the help of camera footage from the restaurant, which captured her erratic behavior, Nikki would have a pretty solid defense. At the very least, every tangible piece of evidence would be enough to create reasonable doubt so that a jury would immediately jump to a conclusion like, "She must have done it for the money."

Sadly, even if Nikki were exonerated, it would never undo what she went through, and it does not address the psychological damage left behind, which is far more significant than any legal outcome. But it does open the possibility that she would not be held criminally responsible for something that was never within her control in the first place.
