From (2022) is one of the most underrated shows on TV right now. The horror-mystery series focuses on the small band of people who have been mysteriously trapped in a small town and have to spend every night hiding from the smiling monsters that are waiting to rip them to pieces. The scary turns and monstrous mythology at the heart of the show make it a good contender for the best horror currently on TV, even when stacked against other modern hits like It: Welcome to Derry (2025) and Stranger Things (2016).

A big part of what makes the show so good is that it follows a lot of the same storytelling impulses as Lost (2004). That makes sense, given the number of creatives that the two shows share, as well as a starring role for Harold Perrineau. More than just sharing a love for a complex mystery narrative, the blending of compelling character arcs with genre touches makes From a perfect show for anyone who loves Lost.

'From' Has A Lot Of On-Camera (And Behind The Scenes) Connections To 'Lost'

Julie in From

From has a lot of underlying connections to Lost, explaining why fans of one will likely fall in love with the other. Harold Perrineau is a key figure in both shows. While Michael may not have been a main focus for most of Lost, his role as a complex and tragic character matches the tenor of From, and his performance as Boyd highlights just how good the actor is when he gets to headline a show.

Jack Bender, an executive producer and director on Lost, is also crucial to From. The same applies to Jeff Pinkner, who was a writer/producer on Lost and is an executive producer on From. These creative connections are a big part of From's DNA, which has always balanced a mix of mysteries, genre impulses, and character-driven flashbacks.

If you also enjoy shows like Yellowjackets (2021) and The Leftovers (2014) that took cues from the smash-hit ABC show, then the tone, style, and format of From will have a lot of appeal for you.

'From' Is Just As Much A Character-Driven Mystery As A Genre-Piece

The cast of From

On the surface, From is very much a horror show. From the opening scene of the series, which features the introduction of the creatures at the heart of the show, as well as the death of a child, the gruesome stakes at play set the groundwork for a frightening story. Similar to how Lost leaned into the survivalist thriller and mysterious sci-fi touches to draw the audience into a very character-driven story, From's surface-level horror gives way to a lot of in-depth character work.

The stories of Boyd, Tabitha, Jade, and the rest of the town all contain fantastical elements, including questions of reincarnation and their efforts to endure in a world of murderous monsters. However, the real draw of the show comes from the character interactions and tension. The relationships between the characters are steadily revealed in tragic flashbacks, such as the fate of Boyd's wife or the real reason people keep being drawn to the mysterious town.

Similar to Lost, From uses plenty of illuminating flashbacks to delve into the character drama, hopping into different time periods and settings to illustrate the full scope of the characters and contrast with who they have had to become to survive in the town. That character focus is always what elevated Lost beyond the imitators that followed in the years after. The focus From pays to that element is central to what makes it so effective.

'From' Is Basically Stephen King's 'Lost'

The Man in Yellow in From

One of the most exciting parts about being a Lost fan was getting to dive headfirst into an ambitious genre piece that never lost sight of the humanity at the core of the story. Every absurd twist or bizarre turn was setting up a major revelation or a deeper mystery. It all came together to produce a vast world that felt larger than anything seen in the show, even as the show kept a focus on the enduring power of love and the importance of forgiveness.

In a similar vein, From delves into underlying themes of hope, destiny, and family. Both shows embrace a long-winding mythology that never loses sight of the humanity at the core of the narrative. With From heading into a fifth and final season (and with a hell of a cliffhanger to boot), any Lost fans who have been curious about the show should venture into the woods before the series comes to a vicious end, especially if you dig the small-town horror vibes of Stephen King.
