'Ahsoka' Season 2's New Lightsaber Has A Strange Origin
Star Wars has only recently found its way back to the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026). Before that, the franchise had been kept alive with TV shows that scour different eras in the galaxy, like Ahsoka (2023). Season 1 of the series also served as a sequel to Star Wars Rebels (2014-2018); we see what happened to Ahsoka and Phoenix Squadron following the fall of the Empire.
Ahsoka Season 2 revealed a brand-new trailer setting up its January 20, 2027, release on Disney+, which adds more stories of Ahsoka's past under Anakin Skywalker's tutelage and even adds a new lightsaber type. But for as mysterious as this new blade is, it has an origin you would never suspect.
'Ahsoka's Season 2 Trailer Introduces A New Lightsaber Type In Live-Action
Ahsoka's Season 2 trailer had a lot to set up after the exciting Season 1 finale, which saw Grand Admiral Thrawn taking a new fleet from another galaxy back to his own. His goal is to restart the Empire and unleash all-out war. We also saw flashbacks of Anakin and Ahsoka's time during the Clone Wars, leaning into Ahsoka's potential return to the Jedi practices.
But during this trailer, there's also a snowy forest battle where Anakin and Ahsoka meet an enemy wielding a cyan-colored double-bladed lightsaber with another emitter connecting the center. This three-blade combination isn't something we've seen before in movies or TV, but it's just as threatening as a traditional double-bladed lightsaber.
In Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020), the last unique blades were Asajj Ventress' curved double-blade design, which could come apart, and Pong Krell's double-blade design, which hinged in the center. It proved that lightsabers always had to innovate, and there's no design that seems too outrageous when seen in action.
The New Lightsaber First Appeared In A 'Star Wars' Magazine
While this is a new saber seen in live-action Star Wars, it's far from unfamiliar and has a secret history in the canon. The design was first introduced in Legends canon following a "Design an Alien" competition in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine. In Issue #7, a War Dragon Rider by artist Mark Rekoph was one of the winners, and it was canonized in Legends.
The image showed him riding a Ubese Thorn-Back War Dragon with a lightsaber that had two handles and three red blades, two on either end and a short one in the middle. It wouldn't be seen again in the main canon until the Star Wars: Kanan comic series, where a lone Jedi Temple Guard used it in the temple.
This mysterious lightsaber variant still doesn't have an official name. Still, it's exciting to see it used in live-action because, even though it seems impractical, the design is deceptively smart. When it comes to double-bladed hilts, skilled duelists can easily cut the blade in half. But if you're good enough to wield one, the center blade eliminates that threat and makes you three times as deadly. Now, the hope is that we can see the blade in action long enough to see Anakin and Ahsoka struggle.
Cyan Lightsabers And New Styles Keep The Fun Of 'Star Wars' Alive
Cyan lightsabers are ones we don't see often in Star Wars canon. The most famous user in recent years has been Cal Kestis in the Star Wars Jedi game series. Even Luke Skywalker had a light blue blade rather than a cyan one in his first appearance. Ahsoka is bringing back deep cuts from the lore that are sure to make longtime fans happy.
Not only does this triple-bladed lightsaber tie to a unique part of the Star Wars canon, but it also uses a color that is long overdue for an appearance. With shows like Star Wars: The Acolyte (2024) introducing lightsaber whips, it's a new era for exciting lightsaber variants, and this example is no exception.
Great characters, cool ships, exciting battles, and lightsabers encapsulate some of the best parts of Star Wars, and Ahsoka is a show that understands this better than most. Considering how skilled Anakin and Ahsoka are as lightsaber duelists, it'll be fun to see them contend with a lightsaber duelist they've never seen before, using a saber that is rarely shown in canon.
