When you hear “dead by dawn,” you know a Deadite isn’t too far away, but the titular monsters of the Evil Dead franchise aren’t your typical monsters. Deadites are entities that possess a person and completely override their body and soul, accessing their memories and forcing the host to become violent and homicidal maniacs that take a whole lot of effort to put down. They’re not invincible, though. When it comes to Deadites, there are rules that the franchise has been following for the past 45 years as to how the Deadites operate, what they can and can’t do, and most importantly, how they can be killed. Evil Dead Burn (2026) changes that.

It’s not uncommon for a new Evil Dead movie to add some additional rules as to how or what makes a Deadite tick. Still, the new powers introduced in Evil Dead Burn range from cool new abilities to game-changing feats that will make surviving until the sun comes up even more difficult. Deadites have never been an easy threat to defeat, but the game’s changed now. Four new powers were introduced in Evil Dead Burn, so let’s rank them by how broken they are.

4. Boiling Water

A Deadite stands ominously on a dock overlooking a lake

Evil Dead movies in recent years have started to have self-contained cold opens, and the same is true for Evil Dead Burn. While this intro doesn’t compare to the stunningly dark sequence in Evil Dead (2013), it does give us a new Deadite ability that’s pretty fun to watch: boiling water.

That may not be all that impressive by itself, but it most certainly is cool watching Deadite Jessica scald a fisherman she threw into a lake. Watching the steam rise, the fish die from the heat, and eventually, the fisherman’s flesh just melts off his body. It’s a great first impression, and as far as new Deadite abilities go, it’s one that you can argue early Deadites had but never had any reason to use. You could count on one hand the number of times Deadites had access to a large body of water, and even then, there were more creative ways to torture and maim people than just to boil them alive. Still, it’s a solid new method of execution for Deadites and even gives them boiled fish to munch on after!

3. Turning Into A Deadite Via Saliva

Polly from Evil Dead Burn turning into a Deadite

Deadites are like an infection. All it takes is a single scratch, bite, or injury for a Deadite to enter your system and transform you, much like a zombie bite from The Walking Dead (2010). That process got even easier in Evil Dead Burn since now saliva has the power to turn people into Deadites. It makes sense given the infection/disease metaphor, but it’s still one that most likely took fans by surprise. Twice in the film, people become Deadites through swapping spit.

First, Grandma Polly had her dentures licked and tongued by Deadite Thya before gently placing them in her mouth, which apparently was enough to turn her into a Deadite. Later, Susan makes out with Deadite Edgar, which turns her into a Deadite. The latter makes sense, given how emotionally and psychologically drained Susan was, making her more susceptible to possession, but Polly’s denture shenanigans were extra surprising.

The scene wasn’t even played as anything terrifying or violent, just Thya taunting a helpless old woman, which was probably intended to get a few good laughs. When the next scene confirmed that she had become a Deadite, it only meant one thing: ingesting Deadite saliva is a no-no.

2. The Deadites Are A Hive Mind

There are few things quite as dangerous as fighting a hive mind. All you have to do is watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) to see just how terrifying it can be. What can make a hive mind even deadlier? Let the Deadites have one.

This is one that, again, you could argue Deadites have had previously. The Deadites in Evil Dead II (1987) were constantly communicating with each other to torment Ash, but the Deadites in Evil Dead Burn are different. They’re actively strategizing with each other to manipulate the Price family best. Why else would Edgar be outside the window waiting for Polly to let him in to turn Susan on Alice and Joseph?

It also explains how Edgar could manipulate the family dog, whom he turned into a Deadite, whistling his commands, and the dog would instantly understand what to do. This is different from a Deadite like the Marauder from Evil Dead Rise (2023), which was a fusion of the Bixler family. These are separate, sentient entities acting independently and able to communicate with each other without words. Alice barely survived a handful of Deadites, but imagine a horde of them telepathically communicating with each other. Terrifying stuff.

1. Fire Immunity

Deadite Will stands in the doorway of a burning house looking out

But the most terrifying addition to the Deadites’ arsenal is Deadite Will’s immunity to fire. In the original series, fire was the go-to method to kill a Deadite. Granted, the Deadites in The Evil Dead (1981) only died when the Necronomicon was set on fire, but it’s literally said in the film that one of the easiest ways to kill a Deadite is ‘purification by fire.”

If Deadite Will is anything to go by, that’s no longer the case. Deadite Will walks out of the burning Price household, no worse for wear, and seems unfazed by the heat. This may also tie into how Will was immolated in the car crash at the beginning of the movie, but it doesn’t change the fact that Deadite Will can’t be killed with fire.

One of the sure-fire ways to kill Deadites is completely invalidated! Now, the only way that seems to be a guaranteed kill is to dismember and destroy them, which is easier said than done, given how hyper-aggressive Deadites are. Deadite Will’s fire immunity is most likely a one-off deal, but if not, then it’ll make future Deadites all the harder to kill

After her husband's abrupt death, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws. As they transform into Deadites one by one, she comes to discover that the vows she took in life survive even in death.
