‘Elle’ Trailer Breakdown: Cast, Release Date & Plot, Explained
As a Legally Blonde (2001) superfan, I’ve been impatiently awaiting any and all news about Elle (2026) since it was announced at Prime Video’s Upfronts in May 2024. Reese Witherspoon, who brought Elle to life in that first film and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), made it so easy to look forward to whatever the show had in store. She said, “Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!”
Of course, the announcement of Elle made some fans (myself included) wonder if Legally Blonde 3 was in the works. As of a Bustle interview earlier this year, Witherspoon is still interested in continuing Elle Woods’s story, and this prequel show is a part of that. Prime Video seems confident in Elle, which is produced by Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios, because it’s including the show as part of its Obsession Is In Session initiative. Plus, Elle is meant to be featured at Obsessed Fest on Saturday, June 27. Needless to say, there is plenty of excitement in the air about this Elle Woods prequel series ahead of its premiere this summer.
Meet the Cast of ‘Elle’

Going back to high school with an iconic character like Elle Woods means that casting is paramount. I still remember the Instagram video from February 2025 of Reese Witherspoon telling Lexi Minetree that she got the part. It’s so sweet to see how excited she is to take on the role. After the first real look at Elle—and Minetree as Elle—with the teaser trailer in May, it’s so easy to see why she got the part. It’s also instantly nostalgic that the first footage of the show is set to Hoku’s “Perfect Day,” a song now synonymous with Legally Blonde.
Minetree will be joined by June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother, Eva, and Tom Everett Scott as her father Wyatt, alongside Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, and Amy Pietz. There are glimpses of some of their characters in the show’s trailer. Elle’s first season includes the recurring cast of Brad Harder, Chloe Wepper, Danielle Chand, David Burtka, James Van Der Beek, Jessica Belkin, Kayla Maisonet, Lisa Yamada, Logan Shroyer, Matt Oberg, and Sharon Taylor.
As for the show’s creative team, Laura Kittrell created Elle. She is the co-showrunner and executive producer along with Caroline Dries. Witherspoon, who starred in the movies, executive produces Elle alongside Lauren Neustadter, Amanda Brown, Marc Platt, and Brad Van Arragon. Executive producer Jason Moore directed the first two episodes of Elle Season 1. Julia Brownell and Eli Wilson Pelton are co-executive producers. Josie Craven and Jen Regan are supervising producers, and Bryan J. Raber and Asmita Paranjape are producers of Elle.
What Is ‘Elle’ About?

Elle Season 1 goes back to 1995, a time before Elle Woods took the world by storm at Harvard. This show follows the titular character in high school and all the highs and lows that it entails. Prime Video’s synopsis teases “tricky friendships, forbidden romance, and questionable fashion choices” as Elle must leave Los Angeles behind for Seattle. “Through it all, Elle uses her family as a touchstone, and forms an even tighter bond to her mother, proving that they can get through anything life throws their way as long as they have each other,” per the synopsis.
It’ll be fascinating to see how much Elle plays into the existing lore of the character. There’s so much about Elle in those first two movies that really define her—her arc and growth are so clear in them. This show has the chance to meet Elle where she’s at as a teenager without stepping on the movies’ toes. After all, it would be a bit strange if Elle hits the same beats as Legally Blonde, just with Elle as a high school student rather than a college one. The good news is that all will be revealed sooner rather than later, and Elle’s synopsis promises that “with each challenge she faces, Elle grows closer to the Elle Woods we know and love today.”
The extra glittery good news is that fans can go into Elle with the confidence that this is only the beginning. Prime Video has already renewed the show for a second season. “I think our series’ themes of kindness, authenticity, and believing in yourself will resonate deeply with fans of the original films and new audiences alike,” Reese Witherspoon shared about the announcement. “Working with our incredible Hello Sunshine team, Amazon and our visionary writers and directors to bring Elle's high school journey to life has been a tremendous joy. I can’t wait to share Season One with the world and start rolling cameras on Season Two!”
‘Elle’ Trailer Breakdown and Release Date

The full-length Elle trailer swaps “Perfect Day” for the edgier soundtrack of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl,” complementing Elle’s move from Los Angeles to Seattle. It reveals that she gets the news shortly after her very big, very pink birthday party in 1995’s Bel-Air. It’s so fun to see Elle as this bright, pink spot in the show’s gray-scale Seattle. She tries her best to be her bubbly self and make friends. She introduces herself to another student by saying, “I like iced coffee, the month of July, and when people dress kinda tennis-y, even if they don’t play tennis.”
Sadly, no one seems to be interested in Elle or her interests, so she takes some advice from friends back home and gets “fluent in Seattle.” Even that backfires, with Elle believing that she may be “the vapid L.A. girl they all think I am.” It seems like she may prove to her classmates—and potential new friends—that that’s not the case when she helps them uncover some corruption at their school. It’s also incredibly exciting yet entirely predictable that Elle will also be a prequel series for Bruiser, Elle’s lovable and memorable chihuahua from the movies.
Thankfully, Prime Video hasn’t kept us guessing about when Elle Season 1 would premiere. The streamer announced in January that the eight-episode season would drop on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, which is fitting as both Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde released in July. More specifically, Elle will be premiering 23 years to the day of the sequel. Elle Woods once said, “I’ll show you how valuable Elle Woods can be,” and this new show signifies that. She’s so valuable that even 25 years later, she will be back on our screens with a new story.
