Doctor Doom is the main villain of Avengers: Doomsday (2026), with the latest trailer for the film highlighting his power and motivations. The trailer is largely focused on Doom, with Invisible Woman laying out his backstory to the assembled heroes. This sets up Doctor Doom as a brilliant former friend who has been reshaped by tragedy, but there’s a problem.

It’s not a bad idea for the big bad of the current multiverse phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially given how many of the main heroes have been largely codified by their families. However, it’s also a far cry from the more destructive and dangerous Doctor Doom of the comics. If Marvel wants to appease fans, it may need to find a way to let this Doom play his role before introducing a more comics-accurate take down the line.

'Avengers: Doomsday' Makes Doctor Doom A Tragic Villain

Avengers: Doomsday is making Doctor Doom into a much more sympathetic character than in most portrayals of the villain, which might be a good pick for the MCU but fails to capture what makes the comic character great. The Avengers: Doomsday trailer from D23 2026 gave audiences an extended look at the MCU version of Doctor Doom. Seemingly hailing from the same timeline depicted in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), Doom is suggested to have been a fellow genius and even an ally of the heroic team, until an event years before the present day killed his wife and son.

This gives Doom an inherently tragic backstory and understandable motivation for his eventual plans. It positions him as a man grieving and lost to the internal darkness this unleashes onto the world. It all goes a long way toward giving audiences a reason to understand Doom’s mission and why he’s doing it, similar to how Avengers: Infinity War (2018) did a lot of heavy lifting in making audiences at least understand Thanos and where he was coming from.

Doctor Doom Seems Like An Ideal MCU Big Bad

In fact, this approach to Doctor Doom is quietly perfect for the modern MCU. As the Doomsday trailer reinforces, many of the MCU’s remaining major heroes like Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man, and Mister Fantastic are fathers themselves. They can understand the pain he’s in over losing his loved ones, while still being contrasted in their own limits and lengths. Doom has the magical and technological abilities to hold his own against everyone, effectively a Thanos-like figure whose emotional motivations are key to his character.

Even beyond Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU for the character, there’s a certain poetry to this version of Doom being the big bad of likely the final era for what remains of the original Avengers. He’s a grim reflection of what the heroes could do if their commitment to doing the impossible were warped by loss and pain. Especially as a threat to the grander multiverse and the MCU in particular, this Doom seems like a good villain.

Comic Fans Aren't Going To Like This Doom

Doctor Doom from Marvel Comics

The thing is, this version of the character isn’t anything like the Victor Von Doom of the original comics and most other adaptations. In the source material, a big part of Doctor Doom’s appeal is his lack of any real sympathetic motivation. He’s a simple man at the end of the day, with a petty arrogance and a driven jealousy that makes him a perfectly adaptable villain. Doctor Doom is a genuine supervillain, with all that entails.

That’s the version of the character fans have been waiting to see properly on screen, especially after Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four (2015) missed the mark on their own takes on the character. Doom is one of those grandiose villains who is almost poetic and mythic in his presentation, even as it’s presented with painfully human causes. Genuinely trying to make him sympathetic instead of just adding layers to the villainy, like in the comics or adaptations like The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (2010), misses the mark in a key way.

Doctor Doom is the best Marvel villain because he can be any kind of threat. Similar to the expansive adaptability of a character like Batman, Doctor Doom is capable of anything and easily compelling in every kind of superhero story. Since this is seemingly a Doom from another timeline, there’s a chance that the MCU could get their own version that’s closer to the comics. That might be ideal for the future of the franchise, especially if the association to this Doom gives the future one a stronger starting point with audiences. Hopefully, the MCU will eventually get to the comically petty, brilliantly inventive master sorcerer and let this very specific version of Doom play his role and then leave the franchise.

Heroes from three different worlds must unite when they're thrust together to confront a catastrophic danger that could destroy everything they know.
