Doctor Doom's Stormbreaker Scene May Already Be Setting Up 'Secret Wars'
One of the biggest talking points from the first Avengers: Doomsday (2026) trailer comes at the 1:35 mark. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) launches himself straight at Doctor Doom with Stormbreaker in hand, ready to hit the villain with the same weapon that almost killed Thanos in 2019's Avengers: Infinity War. But instead of moving out of the way or meeting the attack with another weapon, Doom raises one hand and stops Stormbreaker in mid-air.
Thor's momentum comes to a complete halt, and Doom barely looks like he tried. It's an incredible visual, which has left plenty of Marvel fans asking the same question: How can Doctor Doom catch Stormbreaker so easily? The short answer is that Stormbreaker doesn't work like Mjolnir. When Odin the All-Father enchanted Thor's original hammer, he made it so that only someone deemed worthy could lift it.
Stormbreaker was never given that same enchantment. So in theory, anyone can pick it up. In practice, though, it isn't that simple. Thor explains why in Infinity War. When Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) points at Stormbreaker and asks, "Don't you think that we should all have a weapon like that?" Thor replies, "No. You simply lack the strength to wield them. Your bodies would crumble as your minds collapsed into madness."
Stormbreaker is not a typical weapon. It was forged from Uru in Nidavellir, the same magical metal used to create Mjolnir. Although it's not enchanted, the axe channels massive amounts of cosmic energy (including the power to summon the Bifrost). An ordinary person would fail to wield it because their body wouldn't survive the weapon's power. That means Doctor Doom stopping Stormbreaker is basically a demonstration of his power, and it has big implications for Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
Doctor Doom Has Always Been More Than A Man In A Suit
For people who haven't followed Marvel Comics, Doctor Doom might just look like another armored villain. However, Victor von Doom has spent decades as one of Marvel's most dangerous characters. And not because he's physically stronger than everyone else. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962, Doom is the ruler of the fictional nation of Latveria and the Fantastic Four's greatest enemy.
He's a scientific genius who rivals Reed Richards. But that's only half of what makes him so dangerous. Doom also mastered the mystic arts, combining advanced technology with powerful magic in a way very few Marvel characters have ever managed. His armor gives him incredible strength and the ability to fly, while housing an arsenal of weapons.
At the same time, his knowledge of sorcery allows him to cast spells. He can also manipulate energy and has challenged some of Marvel's most powerful magic users (like Doctor Strange). That combination has always made Doom difficult to beat. With all of that in mind, that Thor/Doom trailer moment suddenly makes a lot more sense.
Doom doesn't stop Stormbreaker with strength alone. He uses a combination of magic, advanced technology, or something else to thwart the God of Thunder. More importantly, Marvel chose to show him doing it without the slightest hint of effort on his part. That feels like a very deliberate creative choice that probably holds major clues about which version of Doctor Doom we're going to see.
The 'Avengers: Doomsday' Trailer Could Be Marvel's First Hint At God Emperor Doom
The Doomsday trailer becomes even more interesting if you look at one of Doctor Doom's biggest comic book stories. In 2015's Secret Wars, after the Beyonders (the architects of the multiverse) begin destroying the multiverse through a series of incursions just because they're bored, Doom steals their power with the help of Doctor Strange and Molecule Man.
Doctor Strange and Molecule Man only helped him because they were desperate to save the multiverse. With the Beyonders' power, Doom rebuilds what remains of reality into Battleworld and rules it as a god. From that point on, readers know him as God Emperor Doom. While Marvel hasn't confirmed if that's the version of Doom Robert Downey Jr. will be playing, the pieces are certainly there.
The biggest giveaway lies in the premise of Avengers: Doomsday, which brings together heroes from multiple universes, including Earth-616, the Fantastic Four's reality, and the X-Men's universe, to face Doom. Seen in that context, Doom catching Stormbreaker starts to feel a lot like Marvel's first major hint at 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.
By introducing the classic Fantastic Four villain as someone who can easily overpower a Stormbreaker-wielding Thor (arguably the strongest combination currently in the MCU), Marvel may already be telling audiences that the version of Doctor Doom they are about to meet is strong enough to rival the power of the gods.
