Avatar: Seven Havens (2026) may have already revealed its big bad. The show, set in a post-apocalyptic version of the world established previously in Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005) and The Legend of Korra (2012), has been left in ruins by Korra’s actions, with the legacy of the Avatar ruined in turn. However, it’s been heavily implied that Korra was corrupted in the process, raising questions over how she was transformed.

Episode 2 of Seven Havens lays the groundwork for a major threat from The Legend of Korra being the central danger. It also lays the foundation for Korra’s corruption, all while giving Korra’s narrative a much more tragic ending.

'Avatar: Seven Havens' Teases Its Big Magical Enemy

The entity in Avatar Seven Havens

Seven Havens introduces a version of the Avatar world that is still reeling from a disaster that occurred centuries prior, which left the legacy of the Avatar in dire straits. However, the real threat seems to be a mystical force introduced in Episode 2. Deep red and crackling with energy, the entity seems to travel through the massive storm that hits the city. While the entity doesn’t kill anyone, it has the power to break people’s minds (as evidenced by the bending force captain who is driven mad by his encounter with the entity).

This crimson creature is notably the only spiritual entity in Seven Havens so far, hinting that it has a far greater scale of power than the benders it encounters. The quick connection and flashes of memory it exhibits when it finds Pavi and Nisha suggest an innate connection to the Avatar as well, further confirming its magical potential and capabilities. The lack of other spirits and the falling bender population underscores the disconnect that now exists between the real world and the spirit realm. All of these clues point toward the entity being Vaatu, a powerful spirit who shares the same general look as the entity.

Vaatu's 'Avatar' History, Explained

Vaatu from The Legend of Korra

Formally introduced in the two-part origin story “Beginnings” from The Legend of Korra’s second season, Vaatu is one of the fundamental spiritual forces in the Avatar world. Locked in an eternal battle with its opposite, Raava, Vaatu represents chaos and destruction on a global scale. An unwitting firebender named Wan split the spirits apart, giving Vaatu a chance to corrupt the world.

A repentant Wan worked with Raava to stop it, eventually fusing to make Wan the first Avatar. Vaatu was sealed away for centuries but briefly freed during the Season 2 conflict between Korra and her villainous uncle Unalaq, who sought to bond with Vaatu to become a Dark Avatar. That battle ended with Vaatu defeated but not destroyed, setting up a new instance of their endless battle.

This left the window open for the entity to return down the line, albeit in new forms and potentially once again as a dark Avatar. Vaatu is an overarching threat to the world, which would give the power of the entity a reasonable connection to the established character.

What Vaatu's Return Means for 'Avatar's Future

The red entity in Avatar Seven Havens

Vaatu’s seeming return could be a major deal for the world at large, given the power it possesses. Its intentions to bring chaos to the world would also be consistent with what we’ve seen of the massive storms and ruined landscapes that make up Seven Havens. Vaatu could also be the explanation behind why Korra became unstable and destroyed society.

The show hasn’t offered any insight into how Korra might have been corrupted, what happened to the rest of her allies, and if Vaatu really was the entity that took her over. However, the clues we’re given in the first three episodes of Seven Havens imply that something grim happened to Korra that turned her into someone the present day sees almost as a mythical monster.

A corrupted Korra would be a force powerful enough to ruin the world. It would also be a genuinely tragic fate for the character, given her efforts to keep Vaatu’s influence at bay during the events of The Legend of Korra. Vaatu turning out to be the central threat of Seven Havens would give the show a direct connection to the underlying lore and would be a great way to give the new series a connection to the past.
