5 Tantalising Theories We Can't Stop Thinking About After The Avengers: Doomsday Trailer
Since the Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropped, fans have been pulling apart pretty much every frame of the two-minute-long clip. The House of Mouse delivered us some delicious little crumbs, and the internet has been hard at work dissecting them to an even more granular level.
The trailer set the scene for the MCU's biggest fight yet, with the menacing Doctor Doom making his presence known. On the frontlines are heroes from all corners of the MCU and beyond, including the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and the New Avengers — which is probably just as well given that the OG Avengers aren’t exactly the tight-knit team they used to be.
But, with a multiversal threat, these heroes will have no choice but to club together, and as the first part of the finale of the Multiverse Saga, there are a lot of loose ends to tie up. Avengers: Doomsday can really go several ways, but based on the trailer, there are a few fan theories you might want to keep in mind…
1. Will The Real Steve Rogers Please Stand Up?
In the Doomsday trailer, Thor is facing off against Doctor Doom, but things aren’t going so well… He declares that he needs a “miracle,” and in that moment, his prayers appear to be answered as Steve Rogers shows up, seemingly proving himself to be the real deal by taking Mjolnir. However, some fans are convinced that the Steve we’re seeing in this trailer is actually Hydra Cap. There's just something a little off about this Steve; from his slightly different hairstyle, to the way he carries himself, and it's clear that Thor is unsure about the man stood before him, too.
In the comics, Hydra Cap is an alternate version of Steve Rogers who was brought up in a different timeline made by Kobik, and became a Hydra follower. While some might argue that wielding Mjolnir proves this is the real Steve, it’s worth noting that, in the comics, Hydra Cap was able to wield a modified version of the weapon. It’s also feasible that Doom could use his magic to make him ‘lift’ the hammer. So, it could be that Hydra is working with Doom and using Hydra Cap to infiltrate the Avengers.
2. Marvel Are Hiding Someone In The Trailer
In the past, Marvel has edited out certain characters from its movie trailers in order to preserve the element of surprise. One of the most notable examples of this is Spider-Man: No Way Home, where an epic fight scene was edited in order to conceal Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men in the film. And in my opinion, Marvel is doing this again in Avengers: Doomsday.
At one point in the trailer, several Marvel heroes (including Thor, Ant-Man, and the Fantastic Four) can be seen standing in a room together, but if you ask me, that large gap between Sue and Johnny STorm looks awfully suspicious… In terms of who it could be, it feels like anything goes in this movie. Nobody is off the table. It would be fun to throw in some alternate Reeds like Miles Teller and John Krasinski, but the likelihood is, it’s probably a character we’ve seen before. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming out soon, I have a feeling it’s someone whose appearance in the Doomsday trailer may well spoil the movie. So, I’m thinking it’ll be someone like Daredevil.
3. Is Wanda Maximoff Returning?
As mentioned before, Thor said in the trailer that, to beat Doctor Doom, what we really need is a "miracle". While we’ve all assumed that he meant Steve, Marvel might have a different character in mind…
Wanda Maximoff has been presumed dead since the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it’s worth noting that she is linked very closely to the world “miracle.” She was described as one in Avengers: Age of Ultron, while Hydra’s project to give her powers in the first place was also codenamed “miracle". Coincidence? Perhaps, but given her long-running connection with mutants and the events of Agatha All Along, it would definitely be a good time for her to come back.
4. Mystique Has Beef With… Everyone
Mystique is back! In the trailer, she’s already engaged in fisticuffs with Yelena, using her shapeshifting abilities to essentially become a doppelganger of her. So, it’s pretty obvious that they aren’t the best of friends, but one thing others may not have noticed is that she seems to have gotten on the wrong side of Sam Wilson, too.
In the trailer, just before her and Yelena start fighting, we can see Reed Richards holding Sam back. The fact that the usually calm and collected Sam can even get that mad to the point of being held back suggests that whatever she said or did, it was pretty serious. Either way, it seems like Mystique isn’t exactly going out of her way to make new friends and allies, even when her world is imploding.
5. Loki And Steve
Again, the trailer ends with Steve (or someone who looks a lot like him) making a triumphant return right when the heroes need him the most, which in itself is an interesting parallel to everyone joining him in Avengers: Endgame.
In the trailer, it is unclear whether the person we’re seeing is actually the real Steve. But what we do know is that Loki ends up visiting the real Steve in the home he appears to share with Peggy in Endgame. So, even if we don’t see Steve right away, at least we know that he’s eventually coming to save the day, and it's all thanks to the God of Mischief, who has now turned into a hero in his own right after the events of Loki.
