'VisionQuest' Teases A 15-Year-Old MCU Easter Egg You Probably Missed
D23 2026 offered up some big surprises for both the Disney theme parks and the many movies and shows it has in the works. This also included multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe projects like VisionQuest (2026), which hits Disney+ on October 14th.
The series caps off a trilogy that started with WandaVision (2021) and Agatha All Along (2024) and explores what happened to Vision when he left Westview after being freed from S.W.O.R.D.'s control. But D23 also teased another character tied to Vision's history who appeared in a Phase 1 MCU movie as an Easter egg that everyone has forgotten about.
How Did D23 Tease the Original Human Torch?
Before the VisionQuest trailer was released, there was a location in D23 that looked like the Vision's home, which was housed in his mind. It was similar to the quaint home he had with Wanda in WandaVision, but it also had shades of tech that suggested it wasn't real.
In the center of the set, there was also a painting of a man standing unharmed, surrounded by flames. In the world of the MCU, it's hard to ignore a return of the Human Torch, a character who is as old as Namor and Marvel Comics as a whole.
The tease was clever because it never took away from the series being about the Vision and wasn't teased in the trailer either. It raised many questions among fans as well and offered a chance to explore and explain who the character is and why this tease could be a huge deal for longtime fans who have been watching the MCU since Iron Man (2008) hit theaters.
The Human Torch Appeared Briefly in the MCU and Has a Rich Comic History
The Human Torch was first introduced in Marvel Comics #1 by Carl Burgos and told the story of Professor Phineas T. Horton, who made the first sythezoid human. But when he was exposed to oxygen, he was engulfed in flames. He was buried and hidden when people were frightened, but the Torch eventually escaped.
As a hero, he fought all manner of enemies before becoming an Invader alongside Namor and Captain America, and took on a sidekick with similar powers named Toro. The Human Torch was the earliest example in Marvel of artificial intelligence and was a leap in science even back then for the comic community.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) teased the Human Torch during the Stark Expo scene as Steve and Bucky were entering with their dates. He's in a red outfit and in a tube, but that's all we ever see of the character.
Nevertheless, it was a tease of Marvel's rich history that could finally pay off in VisionQuest. However, since he didn't appear during World War II and there were no records of his creation, it raises the question of how the Human Torch could make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
How Could the Human Torch Appear in 'VisionQuest'?
Unfortunately, a painting is the only lead we have on whether the Human Torch will actually appear in VisionQuest. Still, if there's one thing that justifies his appearance, it's that this series is focused on artificial intelligences. Vision, Ultron, F.R.I.D.A.Y., J.A.R.V.I.S., and others all make an appearance on the show, chronicling a history of these creations in the MCU.
Therefore, if we are exploring the past, it makes sense to go further back and explore Jim Hammond's story and history as the first Human Torch. That history could also be enough to justify an appearance beyond a passing mention. With Vision and the Torch both being synthezoids, their history is more similar than others as well.
Captain America: The First Avenger did a great job highlighting the many nooks and crannies of Marvel Comics in the early '40s, but the Human Torch Easter egg was one stone left unturned for far too long.
Making him part of the Vision's mind is a great way to introduce him and help him understand that humanity is achievable even if he isn't human, as well as to help him understand himself. As for fans, it's a chance to finally be introduced to one of Marvel's oldest heroes.
