Does ‘The Mandalorian And Grogu’ Set Up A Part 2? The Future Of The Star Wars Duo, Explained
The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) grants Star Wars' iconic duo, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, a big-screen adventure. Djarin and Grogu first gained prominence over three seasons of The Mandalorian (2019), and while fans initially anticipated a fourth season, Disney and Lucasfilm chose to continue their story in a movie.
Djarin and Grogu are now among the very few Star Wars characters to boast their own solo series and feature film. With Season 4 of The Mandalorian still a possibility, and a successful transition to the big screen under their belts, everyone wants to know what’s next for the duo. Use our guide to find out what The Mandalorian and Grogu means for Djarin and Grogu’s future.
Does ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Set Up a Sequel?

The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t explicitly set up a sequel or Part 2 for Djarin and Grogu. There is no post-credits scene, and the story doesn’t massively shake up the pair’s status in the Star Wars universe. The film picks up where the series left off, with Grogu still thriving as Djarin’s apprentice, while the pair work as independent contractors for the New Republic, eliminating Imperial remnants.
Djarin and Grogu make some new friends and enemies along the way, but largely remain in the same place, still working for the New Republic as a team. However, even though it doesn’t end with obvious loose threads that could lead into Part 2, it does set the stage in more subtle ways for their story to continue.
What ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Means for the Duo’s Future

The Mandalorian and Grogu is a fairly self-contained story, but there are a few elements that could impact the duo’s future. For one, the film sees Djarin strengthen his relationship with the New Republic. Although he still considers himself an independent contractor, it’s clear that the New Republic's Adelphi Rangers leader, Ward (Sigourney Weaver), sees him as part of her team.
The team proves itself to be quite capable, even carrying out an extraction mission to get Djarin off Nal Hutta. Their presence in the movie and growing relationship with Djarin make it feel like there’s more in store for them. They seem almost certain to play a role in a potential showdown with Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), and where they go, Djarin and Grogu will most likely also go.
Meanwhile, another interesting development in The Mandalorian and Grogu is Grogu’s growing independence. In the latter half of the film, Grogu takes care of Djarin while he recovers from poisoning. He builds them a shelter, finds food and water, meditates, and eventually befriends someone who has a cure for Djarin. His Force powers are also growing, as feats like levitating a Hutt or mending a wound don’t appear to deplete his energy as they once did.
By the end of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Djarin even decides it's time to teach Grogu to fly their ship. All of this is setting up Grogu to be a major player in the New Republic and beyond. Although the movie reminds us of Djarin’s mortality, it also reminds us that Grogu has many, many more years in the universe and may even be capable of carrying his own show or movie someday.
What’s Next for Mando and Grogu?
Ultimately, the future remains flexible for Djarin and Grogu. Although The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t explicitly set up another adventure, its success will likely determine whether a Part 2 or sequel happens. Even if the film doesn’t reach the box office success to warrant a sequel, Djarin and Grogu always have the small screen to fall back on.
Jon Favreau revealed he had already written The Mandalorian Season 4 before shifting his attention to and starting a separate story for The Mandalorian and Grogu, meaning his Season 4 plans could still come to fruition. Part of the reason the movie is so self-contained may be precisely because of those Season 4 plans.
Even if another solo project isn’t in the works for the duo, there are other avenues for potential future appearances. The pair could have a small part in the upcoming Season 2 of Ahsoka (2023). Additionally, Dave Filoni is planning a crossover film that will tie up the Mandoverse shows, including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett (2021). If the untitled film comes to fruition, Djarin and Grogu are certain to play major roles. Whether it’s on the big screen or small screen, we likely haven’t seen the last of Djarin and Grogu yet.
