'House Of The Dragon's Team Black Vs Team Green: How Many Dragons On Each Side?
House of the Dragon (2022) Season 3 has officially wrapped. As expected, it brought casualties of the human and dragon variety alike. That said, remembering just how many dragons each side of the Targaryen Civil War has to their name can get confusing, especially considering the big betrayal that happened during the First Battle of Tumbleton.
Season 2 ended with Team Black having more dragons, thanks to Rhaenyra's (Emma D'Arcy) plan to match dragons with Dragonseeds. However, her numbers dwindled throughout House of the Dragon Season 3. Here's the number of dragons left standing on Team Green and Team Black, as well as what that could mean for Season 4.
Team Black Has 5 "Big" Dragons Left (But 7 Total)
As mentioned, Rhaenyra and Team Black had more dragons going into Season 3 than they do coming out of it. House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 1, concluded with the tragic death of Jacaerys (Harry Collett) and his dragon, Vermax. Likewise, Rhaena Targaryen's dragon (Phoebe Campbell), the untamed Sheepstealer, who inadvertently killed Jace, seems largely out of the picture—although even counting him as one of Team Black's dragons is probably a stretch anyway.
To make matters worse, Ulf the White (Tom Bennett) betrays Rhaenyra after Ormund (James Norton) sways him to Team Green. However, in the ultimate form of irony, Ulf betrays Ormund, too, and he turns his dragon, Silverwing, on anyone unfortunate to cross his path during the Battle of Tumbleton.

Team Green Has 4 Dragons Left
When it comes to dragons, Team Green has been at a disadvantage numbers-wise. However, Aemond's (Ewan Mitchell) dragon, Vhagar, makes up for it in size. As the older, largest, and most intimidating dragon currently inhabiting Westeros, Team Black doesn't underestimate Vhagar and locating both the dragon and Aemond has been Rhaenyra and Co.'s top priority for much of Season 3.
While Team Green didn't lose any dragons this season (Sunfyre made a nice, if not zombie-like, recovery), it did lose Helaena Targaryen, which means her dragon, Dreamfyre, is riderless. That said, Helaena refused to use Dreamfyre in battle, and if George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood is anything to go by, then Dreamfyre won't ever see battle. Still, she is an active dragon, so she makes the list, even if she isn't exactly battle-ready.

With Ulf the White betraying both Team Green and Team Black, he currently doesn't have allegiance to either of them. House of the Dragon treated this event a bit differently than depicted in Fire & Blood, so it's possible further changes could follow. Just like House of the Dragon has yet to reveal its second major betrayer.
The other unaccounted dragon is Sheepstealer. While badly injured during his standoff with Caraxes, Sunfyre, and Seasmoke, Sheepstealer is left badly injured, but possibly still alive. House of the Dragon has gone largely off-script with the dragon already by coupling him with Rhaena instead of the character Nettles. However, the result seems to be largely the same. [BOOK SPOILER!] Sheepstealer disappears into the mountains, never to be seen again.
What Team Black & Team Green's Dragon Numbers Mean For 'HOTD' S4?
Anyone who's read Fire & Blood knows there will be plenty more dragon and human deaths going forward. However, if we ignore the source material and just look at House of the Dragon from a numbers perspective, Team Black still has the advantage... technically.
However, Vhagar is undoubtedly the biggest threat on Team Green. Her size alone gives Vhagar the power of two or three smaller dragons together. That said, Team Black has enough dragons to battle her. Not to mention that Daemon and his dragon, Caraxes, both have a lot of combat experience.
Some of us might know where this is going, but House of the Dragon has been known to throw curveballs, so really, we might have some surprises to look forward to in HOTD Season 4.
