Part of the fun of any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie or show is discovering the new villains it introduces. With a show like VisionQuest (2026), knowing that Ultron is in it takes away the question of who the big bad could be fairly easily. However, what's easily forgotten is that oftentimes stories feature multiple villains.

In this case, we are introduced to Paladin, a hitman with a very specific code that marks him as an incredibly dangerous threat to anyone who’s in his crosshairs. A C-list antagonist in the comics, Paladin proves to be a formidable threat in the series, and is someone that everyone should know more about.

Who Is Paladin in ‘VisionQuest’?

Paladin in VisionQuest

Paladin is introduced when he kills Vision's friend in the pub in Edinburgh where he works. This moment alerts the hero that he's being hunted, and Paladin is the weapon tasked with bringing him in. However, there's more to him than meets the eye, as he represents much more than just a name and a job.

As Vision and the other A.I.s learn more about their enemy, we discover that Paladin is a title rather than an identity, and the one Vision is facing is only the latest in a long line of killers. Being part of this society also comes with a specific code. This includes not believing in collateral damage; so if anyone in Paladin’s outfit kills an innocent, he’s killed too. That said, if anyone opposes him, they die too.

Paladin is also a highly skilled killer who is a master of various deadly arts, including hand-to-hand combat and all types of weapons, and taking on a synthezoid like Vision is his greatest challenge yet. He also has an associate who keeps him in the loop through hacking and serves as a liaison between him and his mysterious client.

In a world filled with trained killers, Paladin is the only one with a strict code and lineage. As a result, he also has a strict belief system that makes him a threat, because the only thing that can stop him is death.

How Was Paladin Different in the Comics?

Paladin Marvel Comics

Aside from being a skilled killer, the comics version of Paladin couldn't be more different from the one in VisionQuest. For starters, the comics version has powers that the MCU version doesn't; he has enhanced strength, speed, and stamina, just to name a few. These skills have allowed him to keep up against street-level threats like Daredevil in the Marvel Universe.

The biggest difference, though, is that the comic-book version of Paladin is an individual with no ties to a larger lineage or society. Paladin is a regular mercenary who takes contracts and uses his skills to disrupt the status quo for a large payday. This has allowed him to have a heavy presence in the Marvel Universe as well.

For as much of a threat as he is for the heroes, he would often join forces with them and help civilians on occasion when needed. He's just as complex as his MCU counterpart, but his comic-book lore never got the chance to breathe and grow into something more unique.

Paladin Is a Perfect Choice For an Enemy in ‘VisionQuest’

VisionQuest is one of the weirdest projects in the MCU after WandaVision (2021), and it would make sense that the show's enemy would also be just as strange. Someone who used to be a low-tier enemy has quickly become more interesting than ever as a hitman who believes himself to be noble, when he’s anything but. Compared to what he was known for in the comics, this version of Paladin is a massive jump in quality that was much needed for him to stand against a character like Vision.

While there are only a couple of episodes to explore his character, we still don't know what his ultimate fate or motivation could be. Without him, Vision would never have known about Tommy Shepherd or set the trap that would bring them together. We also wouldn't know that Paladin weaponized adamantium to kill Vision, bringing us one step closer to the Weapon Plus program and Wolverine's debut.

Like all things in the MCU, the most unsuspecting moments and characters can lead to big revelations, and Paladin is a great example of that. Through him, we will learn a lot more about this continuously growing universe and where its heroes stand in it, but all the while we are getting an amazing villain out of it.
