This 'Obsession' Reflection Theory Will Have You Rewatching The Movie ASAP
Obsession (2026) is a genuinely frightening film about a guy who wishes his crush loved him more than anyone else in the world. It’s the simplicity of the wish that makes the movie so scary, because we try to find a tangible reason for why and how it works. Hence, the rise of fan theories.
One new theory has led to amazing ideas as to who or what was controlling Nikki. In fact, it changes the lore so much that you’ll have to rewatch Obsession to see if it actually holds up, considering it shines a new light on the lore that much.
Nikki’s True Self Comes Out In Reflections
The One Wish Willow’s rules are deceptively simple in Obsession. In the case of Bear’s wish, it meant that for Nikki, who didn’t like Bear like he wanted at that time, she would be a passenger in her body. Everything she did when it came to “loving” Bear had nothing to do with her true feelings. Instead, her true self only came out in seemingly random moments that may actually have a logical explanation.
According to one TikTok theory, the effects of the One Wish Willow wear off when Nikki sees a reflection of herself. This could be a mirror, TV screen, or even a small rearview mirror, but the idea is that she’s only able to take back control when she faces herself. Thematically, it makes perfect sense since the only one seeing who she really is, between her and Bear, is Nikki. Therefore, since she is the only one willing to confront her out-of-character behavior, she tries to stop herself with violence whenever she regains control.
Many Scenes In ’Obsession’ Prove This Theory
The theory itself is simple enough to make sense, but Obsession, whether on purpose or not, proves that reflections break the curse for a moment. One of the best and most consistent examples is in Bear's bedroom. From the moment the wish happens, whenever Nikki sees his closet door mirrors, she snaps out of her spell. Then, when she’s acting strange in the corner, it’s implied that the “Freaky Nikki” persona is avoiding the mirrors and the TV, hence why she takes a plant and puts it in front of her to avoid them.
The only time Nikki sounds like herself is when she’s asleep, facing the mirror, and she uses the chance to beg Bear to take her life and end her torment. But the bedroom is only one example, as this was first teased when the wish takes hold, and she sees herself in Bear’s rearview mirror and snaps to reality for a moment.
Even at the party, when Nikki uses a bottle to stab her face, it spawned when she looked at the TV reflection, at least in reference to the camera position. Needless to say, reflections appear as an enemy, whether it’s intentional or not.
’Obsession’ Doesn’t Explain The Truth Of The One Wish Willow
Ultimately, when Curry Barker explains the deeper lore of the One Wish Willow, he reveals the deceptive simplicity of it. The stick is just a means that grants wishes, and what comes from it is exactly what the person asks for. Nikki isn’t possessed. She’s just a dark version of herself, manifested by Bear and constantly at war with Nikki to take back control.
To that effect, Obsession only confirms that another wish could establish a whole new set of rules if it wanted to. It’s not the stick that’s the mystery; it’s how the wish is maintained, as if magic tries to make sense of the vagueness of a wish in a dark way.
We can’t know if reflections bring out the real Nikki just long enough to call for help. But seeing as the wish wasn’t always dark at the start, it’s clear that Nikki was fighting more, and it caused problems. Therefore, reflections could be a sign of weakness, of the dark force taking control, and Nikki not giving up. It’s hard to say what the reality is, but in a world of wild Obsession theories, this one is the most compelling yet.
