The future of the James Bond franchise has been in flux for a while now. Following No Time to Die (2021), which served as the finale for Daniel Craig’s iteration of the character, the globe-trotting super spy has been in a state of limbo. In the last year, though, there has been real momentum for the franchise. Amazon MGM Studios has taken full creative control of the series and has brought in Dune: Part Three (2026) director Denis Villeneuve to helm the project with Peaky Blinders (2013) creator Steven Knight writing the script.

Still, there’s been no concrete news on who will play the next James Bond. Although it’s been reported by outlets such as Variety that the casting process has begun, there’s been little in the way of a formal announcement. In the meantime, fans are debating the merits of at least a dozen potential actors who could take the role, each with their own strengths and drawbacks for the part. Unfortunately, a recent rumor seems to have been picking up momentum about the kind of actor they’re looking for, and it would eliminate perennial fan cast favorite Idris Elba from the running.

Idris Elba Has Been A Fan-Favorite Bond Casting Choice For A Reason

For years, Idris Elba has been bandied about as a potential pick for James Bond. The British actor has charm and swagger for days, explaining why people can imagine him as the British agent. However, the actor’s other talents also make him a natural pick for the part. Elba has plenty of experience playing characters with murkier morality, whether it be the street-level crime boss Stringer Bell in The Wire (2002) or a gritty detective in Luther (2010). The actor has always had a talent for playing compromised characters who never lose their trademark cool or their understated humanity.

Elba also has plenty of experience in action, with movies like The Losers (2010) and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (2019) highlighting how easily he can slip into the genre. Pulling all that together, it makes sense why Elba seems like an easy pick for the James Bond part. On paper, he has everything that you could want from a character. Elba initially even seemed into the idea himself, with Deadline confirming that he had discussions with executive producer Barbara Broccoli about the prospects. Ultimately, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, the increasing focus on his race from some corners of the internet “soured” him on the prospect.

Amazon’s Direction For The New Bond Seems To Rule Out Idris Elba

Even if Elba was still excited about the James Bond role, it seems like Amazon and MGM are envisioning a different direction for the character’s future. According to Variety, the search is officially on for the next James Bond, with Game of Thrones (2011) casting director Nina Gold tasked by Amazon with finding the right Bond for the modern day. The rumor mill has been moving for a while now, with actors like Henry Cavill, Harris Dickinson, Tom Holland, Theo James, James Norton, Regé-Jean Page, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner often suggested to be front-runners.

Things have gotten trickier in those recent reports, too. GQ reports that while race isn’t as much of a factor in their search for the right actor, it’s been suggested that Denis Villeneuve is looking for someone younger to play the part. For MGM and Villeneuve, the actor would ideally be under 30, meaning they could remain in the role for an extended time. That would eliminate many of the potential contenders for the role, including Elba.

It would also make sense for a franchise like James Bond, which is likely looking to find a new Daniel Craig or Pierce Brosnan instead of relying on an established star, who would also come with a higher pay rate and more expectations about creative input. As good as Elba might have been in the part, it seems like the window has closed for him to become Bond.

Even If Idris Elba Isn’t Bond, He Could Still Be In Prime Video’s Bond Franchise

Although Elba doesn’t seem to be in the running for James Bond anymore, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t factor into the new take on the franchise. Elba could easily play a supporting character in the series, either allied with Bond or facing off against him. If the franchise wanted to use Elba’s age as an advantage, they could incorporate him as the new version of M. His dry wit would make him a natural pick for that part, as well as Bond’s tech expert, Q. Elba could also easily appear as another agent in the world, potentially even taking on the role of Bond’s American counterpart, Felix Leiter.

There’s also the very real possibility that Elba would make for a solid new villain in the franchise. Elba’s played the big bad in movies before, delivering villainous monologues and enacting dangerous schemes, all while proving he can be viable and hold his own against other major stars. Elba being in any of those roles would be a fun way to incorporate the actor into the franchise and even include a sly nod to the popularity of his fan-casting in the part. While it’s a shame we’ll never get to see Idris Elba as James Bond, that doesn’t mean he’ll necessarily be absent from the franchise.

Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.
