Doctor Doom Vs. Stormbreaker In 'Avengers: Doomsday' - How His Magic Works

Avengers: Doomsday (2026) is our first official look at Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., and just how powerful he is. From his opening lines in the trailer, it's apparent that he's not only smart, but he's also already aware of the film's major plot points and a looming danger on the horizon.

But when it comes to action, as Thor brings down Stormbreaker, Doctor Doom holds him back with only two fingers and very little effort. But it raises the question of how he can do that and proves that the only logical answer is tied to his roots in magic.

How Can Doctor Doom Stop Stormbreaker?

Stormbreaker is a powerful weapon forged with Uru metal and the heart of a dying star, just like Mjolnir. But rather than being worthy or unworthy to carry it, it takes a strong mind, as any random person could be driven mad by its power. In short, it's a formidable weapon designed to kill Thanos.

Now, as Thor goes for the head, Doom stops it with two fingers and leaves us wondering how? In short, the answer may lie in magic and the possibility that he's harnessed immense cosmic power. When focusing on magic, though, it makes sense as his armor is covered in runes. In ways, the armor not only protects him from physical attacks but also spiritual ones.

To go up against a god as a mortal person, it would take a formidable mind, and Doctor Doom is exactly that person. He's already done the amazing in the comics, and garnering the means to stop a weapon made for gods would be child's play for him. But it also proves just how dangerous he is even compared ot Thanos.

Magic Is A Huge Part Of Doctor Doom's Character

No character has grown as much in his formative years as Doctor Doom. While he's become a ruler and scientific genius, he's also had a close familial connection with magic that pushed him. His mother was a Romani witch who taught him some magic as a child, but he also learned from Tibetan monks.

Doom later learned from powerful and ancient magic users like Morgan La Fey and became a master of the dark arts. More recently, he held the title of Sorcerer Supreme and nearly ended the Earth in the process, enslaving his people in Latveria to gain more power.

While Doom has always been portrayed as a character who leans into science, magic is his strongest suit, and the intersection between both institutions is where he thrives. It's because of this that the idea of stopping a weapon like Stormbreaker seems like a warm-up for his mind rather than a real problem. 

But this also proves how little we know of his power and how this could prove why he will eventually create Battleworld. Whether he has cosmic power already or not is unknown, but what's known is that he has the latent magical and physical potential to end reality and make his own for Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).

We Are Long Overdue For A Comic-Accurate Doctor Doom On The Big Screen

Doctor Doom is a character who has had a bad rap on the big screen. In Fantastic Four (2005), he was a vain businessman with metal skin and electrical powers. For a character who is above fisticuffs, this version was fighting in the streets against the FF. 

Meanwhile, Fantastic Four (2015) turned him into a twisted advocate for eliminating humanity to save the planet. He didn't look or act like the character we knew either. And for just over a decade, this was all we had on an official level.

Now, Doctor Doom can finally be portrayed in a way that feels accurate and makes him the threat we all knew he was. He's strong mentally and physically, and he can stop Stormbreaker with ease. We've only heard him say one line, and he's already as threatening as Thanos; if not more.

Doctor Doom has to be comic accurate to deliver a great cinematic performance, and thanks to Avengers: Doomsday, we have that. Now, audiences will see why he's the greatest villain in all of comics and, worse than that, they will see how devastating his power can be.
