The Complete 'Insidious' Timeline, Explained
When Insidious hit cinemas in 2011, it looked like a fairly contained horror story. Josh and Renai Lambert (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) move into a new house, their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) falls into a coma, and before long the family discovers that something much stranger is happening. They eventually turn to psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) for help.
Elise immediately understands what's happening to Dalton because she's spent years dealing with things most people would rather not think about. Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) continued Josh and Dalton's story. But 2015's Insidious: Chapter 3 went backward and made Elise the lead. Insidious: The Last Key (2018) went back even further by explaining where her abilities came from.
That makes the Insidious timeline more complicated than it initially appears. The movies were released in one order, but the stories don't happen in that order. There are also flashbacks inside the films, which means even the chronological order can become a little complex. Now that 2026's Insidious: Out of the Further has been released, there are six movies to put together.
But once you separate the main events from the flashbacks, the timeline is actually pretty easy to follow.
When Each 'Insidious' Movie Takes Place
The easiest way to understand the Insidious timeline is to follow the main story of each movie, rather than deciding that a movie belongs at the beginning just because it contains a few flashbacks. That rule is especially important with The Last Key, which goes all the way back to Elise's childhood in 1953, while its main story takes place in 2010.
Putting the entire movie in 1953 would obviously make no sense, because that's not where most of the story happens. The same rule applies to Chapter 2, which contains material from Josh's childhood but is primarily a continuation of the first movie. So if you want to arrange the films by their main events, this is where everything falls.
Chapter 3 comes first. The movie takes place in 2007, several years before Josh and Renai Lambert ever become involved with Elise. The story follows teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) who attempts to contact her dead mother and accidentally attracts something much worse. Although Elise has stopped working as a psychic, Quinn's situation eventually brings her back.
This is where her partnership with Specs (Leigh Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson) officially begins. The main story in The Last Key takes place in 2010, when Elise is called back to the house where she grew up. That gives the movie an excuse to dig into her childhood. The important thing for the timeline is the ending, which leads Elise to the Lambert family and the events of the flagship movie.
From The Lamberts To 'Out Of The Further'
Insidious, the movie that started it all, sees Josh and Renai trying to understand what happened to Dalton. When Elise arrives, she explains that their son's consciousness is trapped in the Further and his ability to travel there is connected to Josh's own history. Chapter 2 follows directly after that. Luckily, there's no need for much timeline gymnastics with this movie since it directly follows the first one.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023) jumps forward to the Lambert family years later. Dalton is now an adult, and Josh is still dealing with the consequences of what happened to them. Elise is only shown briefly. The newest movie, Out of the Further, moves away from the Lambert family and introduces Gemma Hall (Amelia Eve), whose connection to the Further puts her and her daughter in danger.
Although the franchise moves on to another family in the new film, it still keeps Elise in the story as the main link to everything that came before. So the chronological order based on when the main stories take place is Chapter 3 → The Last Key → Insidious → Chapter 2 → The Red Door → Out of the Further. However, it's not necessarily the best order for a first-time viewer.
I would still recommend watching Insidious in release order if you have never seen the movies before. But if you've already seen them and want to shake things up, chronological order gives you a different way of looking at the whole franchise. And once you realize that Elise is the character to follow, the timeline starts making a lot more sense.
